View Full Version : Sir Hawthorne. A bit of a Dilemma

Buddy Lee
August 21st, 2006, 11:10 AM
Okay, here's the deal. I have an extra Sir Hawthorne that I was going to send my nephew for Christmas. Well, talking to him over the phone it seems that he is not as into HeroScape as he used to be (Who the heck can figure out 11 year olds anyway?). So my question is:

Do I give the SH to him as I originally intended? I know he would appreciate it, but not like he might have a year ago.

or

Give it away at Dragon*Con as some sort of prize, etc? I know I can find a good home for it there.

Any insight would be appreciated, and BTW Bannister and Rodriquez you are both banned from voting. :) :D :neener:

buddy, If you're nephew will not go  over it like the folks here would, then I'd say send it to someone here. I appreciate looking out for your nephew, but you must ask yourself: Who you will make happiest with it? Perhaps you could have a contest for overseas posters only? I know of one other person who's taking care of an overseas poster. Maybe this would be a good way to extend the love past the US.

It was between the family member and someone here for me. If you think one of your friends/ family members will enjoy it, I would give it to them, if not then probably sending one though here will be fine, Im sure someone will enjoy it.

Hmmm. This idea has merit. I will give it all due consideration.

NOTE: I reserve the right to do with the figure whatever the hell I want without any recriminations or hard feelings from anyone. If I choose to melt it in the flaming furnaces of oblivion then I will do so. :) Those who choose to attack my course of action will face the unrivaled disparagements of my wry wit and friendly banterlike insults. So just be forwarned.

Wow...what a dilemma! Maybe hold onto it for a bit and see if his interest resurges for the game...Christmas is coming and what a cool present that would be! If he seems to continue to lose interest (or not be as excited about the game in the future) then you can always use it as a prize for future events or as a gift to someone here. I don't think the interest in Sir GB will wane. :D Just my .02 and I'm sure you will do what your conscience dictates.

Buddy - definitely give it to someone who will leap for joy over it, someone who every time they pull it out will smile smugly and tell their friends YET AGAIN the story of how they got a Sir Hawthorne for free even though they're now selling for $80 on ebay, someone who will be so excited they'll name their next cat Buddy Lee because of your generosity . . . . . That's the kind of recipient you want.

If that's your nephew, then definitely give it to him.

If not, my second choice would be to give it to someone you know who would be NUTS over the figure, and just buy your nephew an expansion pack of some sort. I got two Neraks at last year's TRU giveaway, and I gave one to my best buddy who's a die-hard HSer. It was great to see how much he loved getting his very own Nerak.

And if you don't have a friend who lives nearby who'd go crazy, then yeah, I'd say pick some sorry slob on this site. Or even trade it for something unique. I'd be happy to send you a live New England lobster via the mail!

Sir Hawthorne is too cool of fig right now to be given to someone who won't appreciate the gift . . . . . my $.02.

Now that I'm feeling a little more impartial, I say give it to someone who will really cheerish it. I can afford paying to much for plastic, but I know there's people out there who something that simple would mean the world too. I still can't find my Nerak :(

Thank you for the nom, but I already have a Sir Hawthorne, and even managed to sob story one from GB to give to my boyfriend who is stuck in Indonesia and couldn't come with me to GenCon.

Nope, no one who went to Gencon gets to be the lucky recipient of a Sir Hawthorne, they had their chance ;)

I did vote to give it to someone from these boards. How Buddy decides to choose is his battle to fight.

Agent Minivann

My take:

Give it to someone here. I would have to say Parduz if he hasn't received one yet for solidscape. If he's already got one, I'd have to say the cool thing to do would be to hook one of our other fellow scapers from across the pond. Perhaps Zzzzz for virtualscape. Selfish side of me says give it to Agent Minivann, but I realize I may only be a random scaper you don't really recognize.

Giving it to the nephew is kind of a catch 22. If he ends up really digging Heroscape, he might hold it against you down the road. If he ends up not caring that you gave it to him, the community might hold it against you. So I have to say if you give it to him, tell us that he LOVES it, and the game, even if you are lying through your keyboard. That way everyone will be cool with it. I'm sure there will still be grumbling, but if everyone thinks the nephew is jazzed, you're home free.

Editted for easier understanding. Stupid filter, the "d" word is in the Bible.

I think that you should hold on to the fellow and see if your nephew redevelops his interest as most boys of that age have the attention span of a gnat on a weekend bender. Failing his interest, Sir Hawthorne should go to that most worthy of crowd, the heroscape fanatic among us who cannot afford his price and could not attend Gen Con. Otherwise I think this post is a great idea! Sir Derrick must die!

Give it to your nephew. Then show him this thread. He'll be able to get some sense of how valuable it is, and he can decide to:

1) Keep it and maybe get a renewed interest in the game.
2) Sell it on e-bay, make some $$ and get it back into circulation.
3) Become a heroscapers.com LEGEND by coming up with some sort of giveaway contest of his own.

Very intersting question to throw at us, your online heroscape community. What to do, that is a great question, I am not voting because I am torn between 2 decisons really.
1). yea give it to your nephew, he is blood, but more importantly it is an exclusive you can have in the gaming group you will hopefully be gaming with for life. Sure he isn't into it right now, but who knows in antoehr year or 5, and how cool if you are playing a game over christmas 10 year from now and he has Sir Hath., which is now selling for $300 on e-bay -- and the kicker you gave it too him.
Now with this one, you now your family, is he lickely to sell it on e-bay now or in a few years when he figures out he can get $50 bucks for it.

2). Have some kind of contest on heroscapers and give it to really good home where it will be loved and cherished. This of course is cause then Ihave a chance to get at it, but more make it where it is regular posted who couldn't make it to Gencon, and do a trade for there best custom contest or something where they write a story, or jump threw hoops so many times. This just also sounds like a lot of fun if down right.

I did not read any of the the posts, so if I repeated someone elses views, sorry.

Part of my family I would not give it too, half I would, so that doesn't help much, but that would be how I would be looking at it.

I disagree. I think Necromancing an old thread is fine IF they add something to the thread. If they're just going to add, "Yes I agree too," then they should have left the thread alone.

This thread is a prime example of someone NOT reading enough. All they needed to do is read the date of the first post.

After reading through the thread - I too, am curious. It's funny that this thread came back from the dead twice.

Though clearly accidental, I don't think this is a pointless necromancy at all. There's an ending to the story somewhere that could still be interesting.
