Warriors of Ashra -- Elves? REALLY?

I found my wave 5 figures yesterday. I just don't see the Warriors of Ashra as very elvish. Furthermore, look at the illustration on the cover of the Warriors' package. She has very human-looking ears to me.

The Ashrans sure look like amazons to me. So why weren't they amazons? Copyright issues? Did they make a last minute decision to fill out an elf team?

Beside the pasty flesh color and the terrible paint jobs I saw in EVERY package (MacDirk Warriors anyone??) the Ashrans are a pretty good unit.

I've got two sets of them and want to draft them and be able to get them in close to a big gun and whack away, hoping to roll one shield often. Hopefully better luck than with the Sentinels, though this time I'd be drafting Raelin as well :wink: 2 WOA and Raelin is only 180pts. Get some ranged guys to keep the bad guys's range off them and it should be fun. Heck maybe pick a couple squads of Deathreavers to charge/harrass the opponents' ranged guys. We'll see, but with me it doesn't always work as planned. :(

That said....the unit is awesome. They may be the best 50 points you can spend in the game. I predict that they will be in many tourney armies in the future.

That's not really a fair comparison. Try matching them with other units in the same price range and you'll get a more fair assessment. For example, look at how this unit's 50 points compare to the Marro Warriors or the Tarn Vikings.

I actually like most of the wave 5 sculpts. The Deathstalkers and Blastatrons look pretty good imo, and the Deathreavers actually look really cool. It's just the Nakita Agents and these Ashra Warriors really REALLY bring the whole wave down in terms on looks. The Agents look tacky and cheap in their all white suits and their hair styles from 30 years ago. The Warriors of Ashra look nothing like elves and look really silly with their huge headresses. The only WoA that looks decent from the squad is the one without a headress/poofy hair. It's a shame too because they look so cool. I dunno which is worse, a good unit that looks like crap (WoA, Nakita Agents), or a unit that looks great but plays kind of crappy (Gorillinators).

As long as the unit is balanced, i dont care how it looks.

I completely disagree with you. I think the WoA are the best looking figures of wave 5.

The Nikita Agents, on the other hand, do indeed look like total crap.

I picked up some Ashra/Reavers tonight. Looking at the Warriors, I thought one of them looked like a minature in my Cleric collection. Take a look.
I know the figures are not identical, but I thought the overall poses of the bodies were similar.

There was a great thread on HQ with similarities in figures from other games/sources and if the sculptors might be the same.
I was never fond of the lead figure. Her arms are way too short for her body.

Btw, this is my favorite elven amazon. Love the headdress and feather cape. She reminds me a bit of Jack Kirby's Big Barda. And I always liked Big Barda!

Here's Big Barda with her weapon the Mega-Rod which in turn reminds me of Morsbane's Rod of Negation and....well, a device a lonely woman might use. :shock:

Nice catch on the figure comparison. There was a figure from the old Ral Partha line called the Angel of Death...low and behold it shows up as a figure in the MK Dungeons line called Thanatos Reaper. :D
