For those of us who have never been to gencon, I thought I would start a thread that could turn into a FAQ of sorts.
Before asking questions, do the following:
1) Visit Gencon.com, and spend at least 3 minutes looking for your answer.
2) Listen to this podcast:
http://www.heroscapers.com/podcasts/...GenConPrep.mp3 (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/../podcasts/episodes/HahnTalksGenConPrep.mp3)
http://www.heroscapers.com/community...ead.php?t=4276 (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=4276)
Also of interest, a listing of events that won't make your head hurt:

I am new to Gen Con this year (what does Gen Con stand for?) and I am wondering how many events should I pre-register for. I have registered for 3 HS events; Championship (Fri,Sat), Classic Draft (Sat), and Unique Hero (Sun).
I'm not sure yet if I will be able to get there for Thursday (or if I'll still be there Sunday) since I have to work around some other obligations so I don't want to book anything on Thursday.
Is this enough? Will I be able to find other things to keep me busy throughout the Con. I am going alone and I hope to find some folks to hang out with and I'd like to move out of the HS area as well.
Any suggestions for a newb?
Thanks.

This will be my first year as well. From what I here, there is plenty to do even if you don't register for a bunch of events.
Personally I am going down Wed night and returning Sunday. I might join the Damnation Alley event for heroscape at some point as it is, from what I understand, almost perpetually running.
I am volunteering at the Heroscape area/events for some of the day Friday, but other than that I plan to work the exhibition hall.
Having been to a number of trade shows, cons, and the like, if you spent 5 minutes at each booth you might not have time in 4 days to cover it. IF you want to talk to the staff, demo the games, look for freebies, etc. You could probably spend your whole four days in the dealer's hall.
Hahn mentioned the loaner library too in the podcast...

Thanks Cav, I was curious.
Thanks also RA. That was my feeling too. I didn't want to book all my time with HS as tempting as that is so I think I have a few good HS event to get into, was thinking I could drop in on a Damnation Alley event without pre-registering (?) and I'm sure to find a lot of other things to keep me more than happy. I look forward to seeing many of you there. I'll meet you at the Scape tables!

It wasn't just roleplaying games, it was mostly war games. Giving that Geneva Convention title the fun double meaning.

I'm not a n00b for GenCon in general (like locations, where-abouts, events, first time, etc.) since I've been there before (07') but I'm a n00b when it comes to Heat Of The Battle. My other 6 events that I'm registered for, for Heroscape, I understand and are easy (except for Jumpstart but I understand that one). I'm currently playtesting and coming up with armies, learning strategies, and practicing tactics in different senarios and on different maps (now that they are up). But I'm having trouble designing an army and strategies for Heat Of The Battle (I'm just gonna call it HotB). Last year I played all events but HotB and that Marvel/Swarm event, so I'm fimilar with similar events to the ones I played last year. Since this is one of the more bigger events, I need to try my best rather than throw an army together and hope for the best (like I did in Slugfest last year :p). So, can some one please explain this event more in depths, or just answer my questions (thanks in advance :))?
Heat Of The Battle questions:
1.) How is the order of placing each players' units determined? (I'm guessing roll the D20 and the highest roller places one Hero/squad, then the other places one, then the highest places another, and so on)
2.) In what order do you do things - place order markers, place glyphs, place units, roll initiative, reveal glyphs?
3.) I've noticed in the summary it says "players bring a 450pt. pre-drafted army", and in the championship (and many other similar events) it states "pre-made army". So is this a small mistake and we just bring our armies like normal or is it some type of draft?
I'll post any more questios later if I really need to. I apologize if I'm asking a little too much, and thanks in advance again. :)

Just as an aside for those going, a couple extra blocks walk makes all the difference when it comes to crowding, etc. I love the Ram as much as anyone, but I don't always have 2 hours to wait for a table.
I recommend Acapulco Joe's. It is a hole in the wall mexican place up Illinois about 5 blocks. We went there last year for dinner, and they had no wait (I understand 5 blocks is 3 miles in gamer walking distance). I haven't had it myself, but I've been told their biscuits and gravy are to die for during breakfast hours.

OK in years past they have they had very little for sale. They sold out very quickly each day. (They have a set amount of what they sell each day) Last year they had both master sets and Wave 7. They sold 75 SotM each day. They were MSRP since they are loss leaders. The small expansions were less than MSRP.
Who knows about this year. I know for a fact Hasbro will only have a 1 person booth each day. I don't know how many folks Wot-See is planning on bringing.

As a kind of general FYI, my gaming group (from Ohio) is planning on setting up a rather large Heroscape game (games) in a common area at GenCon and playing all day to stir up interest in Heroscape. Likely Friday or Saturday. I dont know if we'll have one large map or a combination of games going, but we are planning on inviting interested passers-by to learn the rules and play.
We played on a large map for about 4 hours during the day at the Origins Game Con in Columbus and were really surprised by how many gamers came up and asked up about the game. We even got a few HS virgins to join in for an epic battle. We were really given the impression that a lot of serious gamers are still unaware of Heroscape and some have a general idea that it exists, but dont quite know what it is. We are taking up the cause of spreading HS love throughout the gaming community :cheer:
So, if anyone sees a group of forty-something guys sitting at a table arguing about line of sight, come up and say hi! :D
For my tastes, the Ram is fun for some drinks, but this aging gamer cant always take the heavy bar-type menu, and yes, it will be packed.

When you say common area are you referring to the 500 Ball Room? If so you will need generic tickets for all players for each game played.

"A" common area, not in the ballroom. There are tons of tables around and even setup in the other hotels for play.

Not trying to come across as preachy but in :gencon: talk common area refers to the open common area aka Ballroom 500. Right across from the game library. They have LOTS of tables but it costs a generic. (we learned that lesson back in '05)
Now the hotels very. Embassy tables are available after the 5-7PM happy hour.
Let me know where you are staying/planning a game and I will stop by for a pick up game. Sounds like fun.

Hahn is obviously a shifty looking dude and prolly deserved to be tossed...I kid!!! I kid!!!!
But seriously, last year there were some tables just to the left of the skywalk coming from the parking lots and the mall. We used this space to play a couple of new things we bought. This was a pretty high traffic area and it didn't look like it was being used at any time for scheduled events.
Not sure if you will find any space like that this year but you never can tell with these things.

I will be on the road traveling right around GenCon weekend and I was thinking about stopping in on one day as I will be passing through Ohio on my travels. If I stop by on the some-what spur of the moment, will I be able to pick up a GenCon exclusive figure or two? What other free stuff can I expect to come across while I am there? I am trying to figure out if it will be worth the time and price of admission to take a one day detour to GenCon, or if I should just wait to go until next year when I can plan on spending the whole weekend there.

That's somewhat subjective. Some of my friends love the "Swag", two even found a way to get multiple badges to get more of the "free swag-bag" GenCon gives out directly. Others of us just gave our stuff away.
Some love to prowl the vendors looking for stuff, while Id rather spend my time gaming. In terms of dollar value from re-sell, Im not sure it would be worth your time, but Im as big of a re-seller as some of my buddies are.

Thats cool...I think most people wouldn't mind. I want to actually make color scans of each of my armies and laminate them as one sheet so I do not have to worry about taking the cards or at least bring a set of Raud's trading card size ones that I can put in a baseball card holder.

RE: Swag, one of the coolest ways is to bring the family - kids under 7 get free badges if they are accompanied by an adult.
Back several years ago my wife and I went to Wizard World east and got 2 free badges for the kids, so as a bonus we got 4x of the swag that required badge punches.

I'm not understand your use of "ticket" here, so I have two different answers for you, depending on what you're talking about.
1.) If you're talking about event tickets, then you hand them to the Gamemaster in charge of the event you are going to when you arrive to the event.
2.) If you're talking about your Convention Badge, then, yes, you have to display it at all times. (around the neck, clipped onto a shirt, etc.)

You could, but you are provided a free plastic holder for your badge when you pick up your badge.
The holder works basically like a trading card sleeve, and you can easily attach it to a neckstrap, piece of string, etc. when wearing it around your neck.

Some people Superglue their badges to their foreheads. This makes it really uncomfortable when their badges have to have a hole punched in them (such as for the HeroScape promotional figure), but, on the other hand, they rarely lose track of them.

So I guess tattooing it on my chest isn't a good idea either than huh?I'm neither a physician nor an attorney, so on medical and legal grounds, I would not venture an opinion on the matter. However, as a clergyman, I would say that such an extreme commitment to a four day event in 2008 is probably not conducive to spiritual, mental, or physical health; and it will be very difficult to explain what it all means to the fellow prisoners in the penitentiary, should you ever end up there.

No, wait, that would mean that we would have to see Onacara's chest. Scratch that.
Jim
I'm not scratching Onoacra's chest.
See what you did Jim...now Rev can't even spell!!!!!
Yep, the very thought got my fingers all uncoordinated.

Can anyone give me more details on how the generic ticket system works? Do I use at the start of the event or do I use them to sort of pre register for the event if there are enough openings? The only real reason I am going is for Scape and want to make sure that I get into as many events as possible.

Generic Tix: You can walk up to any event right before the start time. IF there is room left they person running the event will take them and you can play.
You can stand in LONG lines on site to try an register for the event. Might eat up a lot of time but you are confirmed to have a seat.

This LONG line you speak of. At the end of it can I register for multiple events at the end of it or is it one line for each event? Sorry for the noob questions but this the gencon noob thread!:D

Once you clear the line, you can sign up for all the events you wish, plus buy some generic tickets if you want.
I forget, do they sell event tickets Wednesday night, or is that just for picking up badges, etc?

Mrs. Onion Knight and I are coming in on Friday morning. We already have our badges and tickets for the Championship. How early should we plan on getting there? Will it be easy to find the Championship tournament area?

I'm not going to be able to come up until Sat. Morning. Any parking advice?
Also, how hard will it be to pick up a few generic tickets once I'm there? Will it be a time-consuming process or will it be easy to pick up a few generics?
Finally, will everyone at the championship event like wear a name badge with their Heroscapers Handle on it or something? I'm pretty sure I can recognize Rev, but I'll be disappointed if Hahn isn't some really big muscular guy with blonde hair! I'll also expect to see a small red square-looking guy with horns named Grungebob!

Well Hall F is easy enough to find....finding Scape amongst EVERY OTHER mini game in the hall....that might take you 5 minutes

There are booths that sell the generic tixs, and they will have the ATM style machines they had last year for Generix Tixs sales.
Hate to burst your bubble....shaved head, van dyke, and a big ol' silver ear ring. Muscular? tall and lean brother.

This is one of the better sites SWN:

BTW, if you see someone walking around in a t-shirt with my Avatar on it, come up and say hi. That will be me. :)
