View Full Version : Cleaning up Scapers! Or "I Don't Curse That Much!!"
truth
August 18th, 2006, 04:14 PM
Hey everybody, I'm implementing some plans to see 'scapers cleaned up of foul and otherwise offensive language. I want the site to become something that Mama 'scaper has no issues with letting wee-little 'scaper read. I'm making the decision to turn on language filters. If you have any posts that are offensive for reasons other than foul language, that the filter won't pick up, I'd appreciate your support in this by your going back and editing your own posts. No one will be exempt from this new forum rule. Those trying to get around the language filters or posting in an offensive manner will be warned, and then if it does not cease, banned for an undetermined length of time. Lets make this site someplace where our kids can come and enjoy too. There are plenty of forums out there where you can get your swear on if that's what your into. ;)
I want to make it clear that I'm not trying to be a dictator and ruin any fun. At GenCon we encouraged 'scapers of all ages to come and hang out at the site. And I'd like to make it a place that all of us can enjoy.
Thanks everyone for all of your support in everything we are trying to do here at 'scapers. I hope to see the same support thrown behind this! :)

OK,
So,
Get ready for the big fat "what?" but in thinking this over, talking it over, and otherwise grumbling, I actually agree that this is the right decision. And the fact that I was somehow thought to be exempt from a policy is pretty ridiculous in its own right. So I'll be quieting down now.
If this community is to grow, Truth is on the money here. When I started .net, I thought maybe 30 other folks out there would discover the game and maybe wanna swap some maps. Because of that, I kind of set an example that was, shall we say, not stellar when it comes to language-you-wouldn't-use-with-your-pastor, and I brought that here as a member of Truth's incarnation of HS greatness.
But it's pretty clear, as Truth moves on to bigger servers, having to run ads, and certainly the insane showing at Gen Con, that this little game isn't going away in 12 months, as I feared upon it's launch. And the HS community is no longer a little fish, it's a whale.
There are plenty of other outlets for myself (and others) to throw down about the random, um, stuff, that's not at all related to the game, so we can head there.
Peace.
Hero.

I applaud your stance.
Recently the adults have been scaring me! I was trying to find out what a real GenCon experience is like, but then I find out things about someone's wife that I'd rather not know!
Seriously, I feel that you are making a wise decision. A few arguments have cropped up recently regarding language. Someone in authority needed to step in and state what you just did.
Bravo!

WOW.
I gotta admit, this is a ballsy decision, truth (can we say "ballsy?)
Considering it couldn't be popular with your hard-core inner circle (most obviously, hero and IMax), this couldn't have been easy.
I notice hero posted right after you, which makes sense that you ran it by him before implementing it.
I agree with the decision, even if it means a slightly less-efficient or accurate communication between people, for the same benefits that you've already mentioned.
The main thing to keep in mind when making decisions about this game (I feel) should be:
This is a game for kids and kids-at-heart.
Whatever best supports that kind of approach is probably the right decision to make.

Profanity filters can be lots of fun, too! While some of the nominations so far are fun, I'd recommend that we have our OWN substitutes, related to Heroscape. I nominate TAELORD as one possibility, for example. :)

I think this is a good decision. It will make this site friendlier, & that can only be a good thing.
Apart from using a language filter, "creative editing" by moderators can also be great fun. You know, replace belligerent posts with stuff like:
"I don't play well with others. I'm a meanie. Would you like to play My Little Pony with me? I also write my name on the back of my underwear - yup, old habits die hard."
Stuff like that.

OK, I'm not opposed to filtering the big curses, like **** and ****, but I think this is starting to go overboard. Obviously you can't have us saying ****, but damn? Or damned? That's silly. Ass, hell, damn and crap should still be legal. Any kid over 10 hears that every day. Mine hear it from me.
So cull out the girl dogs, woman parts, toilet-droppings, carnal knowledges, and possibly fellatio-givers, but leave me my petty curses. For God's sake, man, give me SOMETHING interesting to say.

I was also curious to what wouldn't get through and if you add another word to some of the filtered words such as bag to the end of the sandwhich replacement or nugget to the frack replacement and they appear to be fine. I guess the filters can't be too smart.

Jason why don't you come down to the "Tree Town Open" in October? Joah is from Wisconsin and I think he may make the trip. This tourney should test your World Championship Status. We will have 3 of Gen-Con's final 8 at our tournament including the current Champion (Spider Posion) for you to test your play. We also have several other good players who were not at Gen-Con so it will not be a cake walk. Nice try to change the subject, but since I take 20 MS, 20 RttFFs, 6 VW, 4 TT, 4-8 of each small booster, and 1 of each large hero pack w/me about once every 2 months for large game days, your feat is beyond unimpressive.

What fantastic logic. I guess that makes me the US champion, because I've never been defeated there. The fact that I've never been to the US, and the fact that I can lose with an alarming degree of consistency to 10-year olds at demo games here in the UK, clearly does nothing to undermine my claim.

(I can't load the very last page of this thread for some reason, so pardon me if I'm repeating anything.)
Okay, so in general I'm fine with this change. I won't go so far as to say I support it or applaud it as some of the previous posts did ("cursing is the lowest form of communication"? nope, that wasn't offensive in the least)--censorship is censorship, and censorship for a good cause is, well, still censorship--BUT I do support the reasoning behind the decision, so it's fine. It isn't going to hurt my feelings one whit that I won't see "****" on the forums any more. (Although I do find it interesting that I never used the word myself until the filters were implemented.)
However ... tuckus? TUCKUS?? Come on people! The word in question can be found in G-rated movies, on the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, even on billboards. There's really no reason for trying to censor it out. Plus, it isn't removing anything offensive anyway; it's just making otherwise clear text very confusing. Monks are not badtuckuses. No one is going to open up any cans of whooptuckus. No one here is a dumbtuckus (not even Jason!). It's just silly.
You know, the "slippery slope" argument gets a lot of ... whatever the proper redaction these days is. I even give it a lot of that myself when I hear it. But I think that here we may actually have an example that proves that the argument has some validity ...

Well, okay, fair enough.
But my point being, whether I'm philosophically opposed to the idea of censorship isn't keeping me from being practical about it. And, practically, having "****" replaced with "frack" in the few posts that I've ever seen it in is not going to change my enjoyment of the forum one little bit. So I got no beef with that.
But this type of thing:
My arguement is they are Shaolin and are so badd tuckus they can leap or drop 12 from their starting position.
which I've already seen several times since the filters got put up, is just weird and vaguely annoying.
So I'm voting that have that one word removed from the filters. Nothing more.
(Interesting point the second: There has been more "cursing" in this thread announcing no more cursing than there has been in the rest of the history of the board put together. :))

not sure if this is possible of not. while on a conceptual level, i am against censorship in general. i also, would not let my children read these boards, based on the occasional content. but i also enjoy throwing comments / remarks out that i look over my shoulder and make sure they are not looking before i post, etc.
What i was thinking, is there a way to put in a Community (I think that is what they are called), that requires user logon. throw in Date of Birth in the profile, and if you are over 18, then bam, it magically appears only for registered members over 18. yes i know, there is no stop gap for age verification, etc. but something like that would be a nice deterent, and give us a place to explore, discuss topics, without worrying (overmuch) about younger / delicate eyes viewing the topics.
Just something i thought about.

If you want the current version I have, send me a PM.
Some considerations:
You need to use Firefox and have the Greasemonkey extension installed. I might eventually turn this into its own Firefox extension, if there is enough interest...
It replaces words only in the Span tags with classes of "postbody" and "postdetails" and td's using the class "quote". If there are another places a swear is used, it won't get replaced.
If the person actually uses the replacement words, they will be replaced with the swear equivalent... so, I likely won't include any of the replacements that use normal, everyday words (like how the Elderscrolls forums (used?) to replace ass with a "a spotted owl" or some such).
Right now, it's case insensitive, so it will find all variants of capitalization, but what it returns will not match the case (it will replace it with the lower case equivalent), I'll try to see if I can fix that at some point :P Edit: Well, since I just noticed the base filter doesn't do this either... I guess it really doesn't matter, does it?
You can customize the list as well by adding the words and replacements to the appropriate arrays at the top of the script. I'm sure someone will find some use for that
All in all, I'd say it's not bad for a v0.1 :P
As a disclaimer: This does NOT in ANYWAY make any changes to the heroscapers.com site itself, it mearly edits the HTML code as it is recieved by anyone that has the script installed and enabled.

Meh, I can uncensor it myself using a Greasemonkey (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/748/) script :P
Now that is the most useful post in this thread by far.
Do you already have such a script? If so, care to share? :)
Edit: I got it working, so far it only does "feldercarb" and "frack"... but I don't know anymore of the replacements... if someone can be kind enough to email me a list of the words and their replacement to thehandofzarquon@gmail.com, I'd be grateful, as would others, I'm sure :)
If the person actually uses the replacement words, they will be replaced with the swear equivalent... so, I likely won't include any of the replacements that use normal, everyday words (like how the Elderscrolls forums (used?) to replace *** with a "a spotted owl" or some such).

Of course, now I see that damn is replaced by stars, which may screw up the GreaseMonkey script.
And can I just say again ... damn? Really, now. Also commonly heard in G-rated movies, on the Disney Channel, etc. Can we just adopt a policy that any word they allow on the Disney Channel should be allowed on the forum? That doesn't seem unreasonable.
Also, I'm still in favor of allowing paying members to see the uncensored text. Hell, I'll write the code for you if I have to.
(PS--I can say "hell" but I can't say "damn"?? :bang: )

While **** may be replaced by ****, page 15 still has a few good ones that apparently aren't considered that bad.

I once saw a movie that I was fairly familiar with on the Disney Channel. The original movie had the word "dingaling" in it (yes referring to a "pickle") and the edit had the word "bamboo". I can't decide which is worse, a made up word, or a word for a plant that grows fast and is somewhat phallic.

Yes, that was one of my points. Efforts like this to "curtail" the "cursing" inevitably only make it worse.
The other reason that efforts like these are problematic (although well-intentioned, certainly: I freely admitted that) is that they (also inevitably) get out of hand. For instance ...
The word A_S_S_U_M_E is now redacted, presumably because it contains "ass". I think we've officially gone too far at this point.
Is there some effort going on to standardize this stuff? What can I do to help? Seriously, I'm not just out here bitching; I'm perfectly willing to pitch in and do what it takes to keep the forum from degenerating into an illegible morass of stars and cutesy-but-obscure terms for things that weren't even meant in the first place.
Please let me know how I can help.
(In a twist of irony that I honestly could not have planned if I'd tried, the last batch of stars up there is the word M_O_R_A_S_S. I trust I needn't say anything further on this point.)

Has anyone else noticed that the 4th M a s s now shows up as 4th Mass? Is there a way to scale back the filter in some situations?
P a s s shows up as pass as well.
I happen to think that the 4th Mass kicks ass.

Yeah, that has definitely been the case. But I think that is only because it is new. Once the filter gets settled, this will get old & I think people will return to normal.
That, or instead of using a filter, just "do stuff" to people's account everytime you see them using bad language. Ninthdoc cussing? BAM! Give him an "I luv Jason" avatar. Stuff like that. :screwy:

An "I love xyz" avatar (with whoever is acting up at the moment) would be a definite disincentive.

That's better.
But I still say that "the 3 letter a word" is not particularly offensive, and, even if some people think it is, it's everywhere. There's no need for us to try to protect children (or whomsoever) from things that they're exposed to every day already.
What do the preachers have to say on the topic?

Words such as "damn" or "hell" aren't inherently cuss words, but they can be used as cuss words. The same can be said of "Jesus Christ." That certainly isn't a cuss word, but many people use it as one. I don't think these words should be filtered.
I would include the 3 letter word as a cuss word. It is used in the KJV, but I would guess it didn't have the same connotation it has today. Language & words change over time. You don't have to read very far into a KJV to realize that the English language has changed a lot in the past few centuries (and believe it or not, the KJVs readily available in the bookstores today have had their English updated a lot since the original printing). I don't know of too many people who use the non-vulgar meaning of that word anymore.
Also bear in mind that what might be a cuss word in England might be a perfectly innocent word in America, & so on. So ultimately, no language filter would be perfect. But just because perfection isn't practical, that doesn't mean it isn't worthwhile to strive for it.
I don't think just because kids have heard cuss words means we shouldn't bother to restrain its use. The more you hear something, the more likely you are to pick it up. So I think every little bit helps. As I see it - in regards to profanity - you are either part of the problem, or part of the solution. After all, every kid that uses certain words had to learn them from someone. I have decided that they will not learn it from me, nor will I reinforce someone's bad habit.
As far as what the Bible teaches on the subject - Ephesians 5:3-5, Luke 6:43-45, & James 3:6-12.
