Halloween 2. I was only young and the empty hospital hallways and the music freaked me out.

As an adult, I found The Ring to be rather unsettling.

Blair Witch - scariest movie I ever saw.

July 12th, 2008, 05:51 PM
I've got to go with Alien here. Aliens is a way better movie, but I don't consider it horror. It's more of an action movie.

If you want to go with actual scare factor, The Grudge and The Ring were kind of creepy. I have to go with Silent Hill as my all time actually scary scary movie.

I agree with Blair Witch, though. I, quite literally, got a tingling chill up my spine, at the end of the movie when the camcorder pans into the corner - and the guy's standing there facing the corner.

The Shining.

Blair Witch and Exorcist are up there, but I simply can't shake the scary feeling each time I see The Shining. Everything is great in that Kubrick movie.

Another creepfest is Xtro. Was thinking of this freakfest the other day.
Creepy sci-fi horror. Truly frightening imagery.

Since Halloween is around the corner I thought I'd bring this thread back from the dead! Scary, huh?

I've got to go with the Exorcist as being the scariest, but some of my other favorties...uh...I mean favorites are:

Dawn of the Dead (Zack Snyder's version)
Night of the Living Dead (The original)
The Shining
Halloween (The original)
The Thing (Carpenter's version)
30 Days of Night

Sure. Why not? Good horror doesn't have to make you jump out of your seat with fright but offer you a premise that is, itself, terrifying.

Besides, the topic isn't movies that scared you. It's favourite horror movies.

Jaws will always be my number one for long term horror. I saw it when I was like 10 and that was it, I was done swimming. I'm 30 now and I still don't like the water.

But back then you couldn't even convince me there wasn't a 25-foot shark at the bottom of the civic center pool much less a lake or the ocean. Yes, I knew the water was clorinated and yes I knew there were lifeguards and I could see the bottom for God's sake. It didn't matter, I wasn't getting in. I kept thinking I'd jump off the diving board and he would rise up and meet me in the air like when great whites hit the seals on national geographic.

Other favorites:
Aliens: My favorite movie of all time. It was going to be high no matter what but the queen took the cake. All sci-fi soldiers since relate to the marines in some way.

The Ring and the Excorcist: Just great films that scared the hell out of me the first time. I still have a total fear of small girls in horror films.

The Abandoned, hands down the best of the Afterdark Horrorfest films. This thing gets going right away and never stops.

Silent Hill: A lot of people blast this movie but I love it. My brother does as well. He owns it on four different platforms (BlueRay, HD, DVD and PSP).

Kubrick's the Shinning: I like it better than King's book. There, I said it. Sorry Steve, there's nothing scary about a Roque Mallet and the elevator of blood is genius. Again, fear of little dead girls.

Nightmare on Elm Street 1: Just a great film.

Army of Darkness: Not scary in the slightest but one of the best movies ever for cheesy one-liners. "Give me some sugar baby!"

I like the late '70s and early '80s slasher films. Not really scary nowadays but they scared me a lot when I was younger. Some of the lesser known but still really good are:

He Knows You're Alone (Tom Hanks first appearance)
The Prowler
The Burning (with a very young Jason Alexander and Fisher Stevens)
The ones that still bother me to this day are the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Ring (part 1), The Grudge (part 1), and for some reason, Return of the Living Dead.

How about Pitch Black, From the Chronicles of Riddick? It's not really "horror" but it is a really great movie. Watched at my friends house in the Countryside, at night, I was up all night.
Other than that, I would say "To Serve Man", the classic twilight zone version. That was the most chilling 20 minutes of my life, and left me thinking.

Paranormal Activity was frustratingly stupid. That boyfriend was dumber than a bag of hammers, and that girl must have had no self esteem at all to stay with him. It reminded me of Saw - it stretched my credibility so far that I wondered if the writer had deliberately written stupid characters.

The first Terminator definitely qualifies as horror. If Jaws is horror, Terminator certainly is. The second one and third movies obviously were not, and the fourth is not even pretending to be horror, but the first was a robot-based horror flick. Just because the monster wasn't supernatural doesn't mean it wasn't horror.

My favorite horror movie is still Blair Witch.

Paranormal Activity was a "sucsess" the film got more money than produktion cost and so 100% more movies will use that money milk maschiene.

blair witch projekt was a bomb the movie was greatand only cloverfield the next big hit, then the rip off Paranormal Activity the movie was so old.

but today real horror films are rae , most have sex , gore.

i have seen the new french horror movies , inside, frontiers, and matyr they are extrem and some kind of good. but the most schocking movie in my childhood was a dracula with christofer lee i was 6 or 7 , and then came the dead luchy back hell that was scary.

in bram stolkers dracula i though, mmh a sex *****, so the feeling change.

Haven't seen a whole lot of horror films, but 28 Days Later is a great one, especially when you consider that a disease is potentially plausible.

The Exorcist was great, too. Saw it when I was younger, and it didn't really creep me out much at all...until the crab-walking backwards down the stairs seen. You could hear it before you could see it, and that scene alone would probably still creep the hell out of me.

What the heck is a horror movie anyway?

I love movies like Alien, Terminator, Resident Evil and Cube. I love tense murder mysteries as well (was And Then There Were None (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061075/) a horror flick?). Yet anything that deals with the occult or seems predominantly preoccupied with the grotesque completely loses my interest. When does a mystery or a morality tale become a horror film?

A horror film is anything film you find scary. However, a horror film is usually classified with the exerocist, the shining, The Thing, etc. Slasher films (Friday the 13th, Halloween) are SOOOO different from horror films. They are far gorier and are often really, really stupid.

I guess that a horror film is classified as a movie who's intention is to frighten the viewer or keep them in an ever-paranoid suspense. Not saying that the intention always follows through, but thats probably about the best summary that I can write in short time.

I agree, I hate it when the gore piles on, or when children get killed. It makes me really sad how a lot of the new horror movies (saw) have such graphic stuff, and just merciless killing with no point (by no point, I mean the villian is not caught, the heroes don't get away).

I've actually seen the first five Saw movies, and while I admit that the later installments grew stupid, the first couple were actually great movies in my opinion. Thats when they actually had intelligent, comprehensible twists.
