Well folks the time has come. We’ve out grown our little shared server hosting account. The traffic increased 5 times, what it was running on average, over the week of GenCon, and has continued to maintain at a rate more than double average. We managed to crash our shared server during GenCon and the hosting company lost a client in the process. We have to move onto a dedicated server or the hosting company will simply turn off our account for “abusing good neighbor rules”. So I’ve worked up as good a deal as I could get by calling upon a friend, but the hosting costs are still going to more than double what they have been. So I ask you, folks who use this site almost daily, to pledge to chip in somewhere between $1-$5 a month into the paypal donation account. If we can get enough of us hitting the thing every month with a small pledge then we will keep ourselves covered from month to month. Please pledge by responding to this post with your pledge amount. Then hit the paypal button with your first pledge. Every month about a week before your pledge is due I’ll send you a reminder PM. We are looking for $70 a month in pledges to keep the bills paid. Of course if we do more than that, that is great too, the extra money will go towards other things like tourney support or other site improvements. We are currently going to be pre-paid for 5 months on the new server thanks to donations already received. But I figure if we start pledging now we can stay ahead of ourselves and not come up short if some peeps are unable to make their pledges. So what do you say? Is a couple of bucks a month too much to ask to keep your favorite site afloat? :) Also note that you should save a copy of any pictures or files you upload as you might see recent stuff disappear upon rolling over. Basically they have to make an exact copy of the current site unto the new server and then flip a switch to put us up on the new server. Everything that happens between the time they flip the switch and I redirect to the new server will disappear. So we will lose a few posts but nothing major. :) I know you’ve had reason before not to trust such statements. But we are dealing with a large professional hosting company with plenty of trained techies. :)

Well, as you can tell the little paypal button at the top of the forums dissapeared because I was screwing around. I'm thinking of doing a small little three google ad links up ther to help us along. But you can still donate using the paypal donate button on the right hand side of the front page. It's in white and blue.

Hey Truth here's the deal, I will help out as much as I can but, well how do I say this......My wife is not as big a fan of this site as I am to say it mildly. If you PM me your address I will just try to send you cash in the mail as often as I can and what I can at the time. This way I can keep it on the downlow without it poppin up on a statement every month. If you do not like this option let me know and I will see what else I can do. I will not be pledging every month but instead wil just make bigger contributions when I can.

I think you ought to set up a thing where, as long as your pledges are up to date, you can cuss. A lot.
OK, so I know why that won't happen! But I'll do $5 a month anyway. That's chump change. And please send the PMs, on account of I'll forget.

Here is another thought as well that we had discussed in a previous thread. I know this is iffy but is it possible to do an auction thread? I would happily donate customs, terrain, repaints, and whatever. These items could be sent to you, put up on a thread and then auctioned for a few days. Probably could make some decent cash for the site. Or even possibly link into ebay using your Paypal and we do the auction and shipping. I do not know if that can be done really. I know there are probably some legal issues with this idea

Yeah, that's my story too!
If I use paypal she'll see it on the next credit card bill...
not good!
I will send something by mail too,
if you can pm me with an address, you can put me down for $5/month.
I'll send in a few months worth at once.
And thank you once again for putting time and effort into this site.

Truth you know I like you guys a lot so I am in.
The only problem is I am a very broke monkey. So what I will do is make some terrain and auction it off and give you the cash for it (minus the shipping). This way you get a little from me as well. What you are asking is not that much so I will figure it out.
In fact what I could do is post the auction here in the forums and let folks "bid" on it that are here so they know that it is for the site. Then they get something out of the donation (minus the shippiing).
So count me in, I just have to get the time to make stuff. (which I normally just do in the winter).
Hopefully that will work for you.

bad_calvin, that is exactly what I was going to suggest to skyknight. If you're selling one custom per month on eBay, at $5 that would cover the cost of your donation to this site.
I'm not trying to spend your money for you, I was just making a suggestion to keep your wife and you both happy.

As I expected I have no doubt whatsoever that this site will never be in finacial lack. We have a community that cares about the site. Even with the high cost of the switch we will be like half a year pre-paid out of the gate. All we will have to do is have those of us who are on here all the time and are large parts of the community toss a couple of bucks each at it every month and it will never be an issue.
If we continue to grow and I get sponsers knocking on my door then they just may pay the bill. If the little google ad links (nothing big and ugly), I plan on adding, end up doing the trick or at least a portion of it then I'll let you guys know the load has been lightened. I just wanted to ensure before making the move that I had the community's backing, cause I don't have $70 a month alone to put into the site if it came to that.

Interesting, and too bad, that the server was adequate for the normal traffic and members here - it was the horde of leechers that come for info @ Gencon that caused it to peg the server and cause this situation.
Certainly not unexpected, but I think it's worth noting.
What I'm glad is that truth apparently has an immediate solution for transfer, and a plan that is sustainable and doesn;t cost an undue amount or place too large of financial burden on the community. That's a good job.

I'm curious about something for those that "don't want the wife to get upset" Is $15 or $20 bucks a year too much to justify? Perhaps I've missed something on the finances level of many households, but it seems like someone would have to be a right royal ***** to say no to something that is cheaper than a subscription to Better Homes and Gardens. Bunjee here is a question, would you let your fiancee give money to the weeble wobble corporation for really no reason? That is how my wife feels about this site. to her it is nothing more than a tied up phone line. Believe it or not my wife is not overly impressed with my spending hundreds on a game system meant for kids, and even less likely to be thrilled with my giving money to what she says could be a bunch of stalkers and petaphiles. I think thats how you spell it. Anyways as i have said before this is the first time I have ever belonged to an online community, I enjoy it here very much here and have made many friends. If someone had of told me a few months ago that they had done this I would have given them a very pathetic look. But then again six months ago if my wife had of wanted to give money to the Barbie collectible foundation I would have probably given her a big WTF. If you want to give, but don't use paypal send me a PM and I'll send you my address. You can send checks or money orders to me and I'll deposit them and transfer them over to the paypal account. I would appreciate it if you would also email me at: screamingtruth @ gmail.com to let me know that you've sent money for record keeping sake.
Done!
Do you want an email every time I mail a payment?

wow - of all things to get hate for, me pointing out that it's too bad that uncontributing leechers who give nothing to the community and cause us to spend more money on the server would be the last one that I would think would be hate-worthy.
Heck, that's a common opinion that's been expressed by no less than 20 prominent members thru the years....
IIRC, hero and truth both have asked lurkers who suck up the bandwidth and give nothing back would at least just pop in with a polite "Hey - thanks for the info!" Or "Nice card, man."
In fact, didn't hero prominently cuss out people who contributed nothing but drain to the site back on .net? I don't know.....
But in general, the hypocricy is getting a tad too deep in here lately.
And in an amazingly self-embarrassing example, hero proved to everyone that he can ignore all the compliments and "good jobs" in my post, and concentrate on the negative.
What did he say again?
"reaper could be given chocolate pie and call it ****?"
Well, the only thing he proved is that Hero sure can be given a generous pat on the back, yet only focus on the negative and attack me for it. :headshake:

And now that I've moved into "defend your view" mode.
Allskulls, I would certainly hope that people who share finances, such as married couples, would discuss their spending. Then again, I would see a strong merit to "personal spending allowance" to cover things that are not shared. I know many women who spend $15 on a bottle of shampoo every 2 months. I wasn't attempting to attack, and I know there are always variables in life that impact finances. If we can get 100 people on this site to donate an average of $15 a year, we almost double what we need to run the joint. Currently we have over 130 users that have more than 100 posts, seems likely that we should be able to make our pledge goal.
I'd still be up for some of those little text only targeted google links like .net had. The HQ ones sucked trash, not only did they have graphics and occasionally try to dump activeX stuff on peoples systems, they were all over the board for content. I ended up buying one of the games I have from one of the sites on .net, and I think it is how I first heard of both Cardhaus and Housemouse.
I would rather that the links be at the bottom of the page than the top. Oh, and Truth still needs to get an amazon affiliate link up so we can purchase things like dog and cat flea treatment and get him the coin from that. There are tons of way to have unobtrusive affiliate links. Shoot, make a separate affiliate page with the links and see how that works out. Really, I need to drop about $90 on flea treatment this month, and Christmas is just around the corner.
I'm fulla ideas!

I am in no way comparing HS to that but that is what my wife sees is a 33 year old man suddenly playing with toys again. Shes cool about it but let's not push it

Sounds to me like you married the wrong person. ;D
Seriously though, I can't stand people who look down on those who enjoy the simple pleasures in life. HeroScape is no less immature than football or baseball for having dragons and robots instead of quarterbacks or pitchers.
And internet paranoia outright disgusts me. What the heck went wrong in our society that women are mentally conditioned to assume that every man they met on the internet is a rapist or something? It's just sick. For God's sakes, just carry a taser or pepper spray and stop living in constant fear of the opposite sex. It's rather insulting to the other side of the gender pool.
The absence of both of these traits is something I'd personally consider as a minimum standard for anyone I dated, and I can't understand why anyone here wouldn't have the same standards. Why hook up with someone who doesn't enjoy the same basic things in life that you do?

Yeah, "personal spending allowance" is there but in our present state it's not that simple. It's not really about the money (I just spent $15 on lunch at Sizzler today) it's more about priorities. Spending money on food or a haircut is valid but in belt tightening times anything liesure is scrutinized. My wife and I both see the need for entertainment but when it comes to individual desires we must consider the other's. Right now her concern is the house and our baby to be.
Don't worry, I did not take what you said as an attack. But do understand, the dynamics of every relationship varies and what may seem clear and simple to some is not quite that way with those that are are intimate with their circumstances.

Dude, my wife is behind my HS 110%. Heroscape lead me to .net, which lead me to a little cardboard dice tower design, which lead me to foamcore towers, which lead me to wood towers, which lead me to quitting my day job because I think I can supplement my freelance with wooden dice towers. Since the game has cost me very little (I have traded for nearly everything) and dice towers have made my family a good bit of change, my wife is totally cool with the game as a whole. Plus she loves it when my kids play with me, or when I take my son to tourneys and game days.
So Heroscape is a big winner in the House of Max.

I'm in the same camp as GB's and Doc's wives - my wife is totally supportive of my Heroscape hobby. I can tell how interested she gets in my hobby when new waves are released and she sees my excitement or a tell her about each game session. She was really interested in the game and the community when I had my HS/BBQ day here at the house.
She also LOVES when I play Heroscape with my son. And she doesn't mind my spending (thank you  ).
And she has ZERO interest in playing the game. Damn shame. I could get in tons more quality time with her if she'd just try a Frenzying army :?

Here's the reason Kark is that I did not have these traits six months ago. I have not gamed in nearly 16 years. I enjoy getting back into it but I have kinda dove into it headfirst. My wife has never been around this stuff. As far as being supportive she lets me drop around a hundred bucks a month on toys, I would say that is cool of her. You have to understand though that I have done a 180 not her. Up to a couple of years ago I was the living fire breathing friggin dragon and now I play with them.

I'm hoping a little pocket change from google will help with the server switch without having to sell our soul to advertisers with giant flashing banners etc. What do you guys think of them?
On another note you guys, as usual, have been mega generous. When the server rolls over I'll be able to pre-pay by like 8 months! O.O

what with the not puking my guts out and being able to walk upright.
Having come off of two and a half years of chemotherapy (and facing my next month beginning in the middle of September) I can appreciate the joys of a day without vomiting.
Although my chemo costs $7k a shot (four shots in a monthly series...one month on, five months off, but they're a bargain, since the "shots" take six hours to infuse) and my insurance pays 80% of that, which does drain my pastor's pay of $26k a year, I do believe (do you believe!?) in pulling my share of the load. So put me down for $5 a month.
My wife, by the way, thinks this place and HeroScape are good for my health because I laugh so much while reading and playing. I agree with her. (Come Sept. 5, I'll have been agreeing with her for thirty-five years, in fact.)

We're really going to need to look at that targetting. Page content keywords make it a little icky at times.
I did notice that the individual pages don't have many meta tags, that might help. Also, I think that Hero's cute little footers that mentioned a lot of different game names tended to pull the target links towards gaming things.

But hey....
Only the young really know how to rock. But as long as that Wheel in the Sky keeps on turning, there will be those who can't Escape the pull of Journey. If that is what you are into then Don't stop Believin', keep following them Faithfully.
I don't really understand why guys like Journey though? I get that a Girl Can't help it, but a guy? I mean, if you can have your music Anyway you want it, then why not Be Good to yourself? Why put yourself in the Line of Fire?

I am pledging, and have already sent fifty dollars, and with robaulas help, I shall be attempting to auction off an unopened Master set with Elite Onyx Vipers, on Ebay, with all proceeds going to the site.
As a person who has zero steady income, but gets $.$$ in dribs and drabs ( whatever that means ) I will not be able to make a monthly donation, yet I will find a way, no matter what, to make periodic "lump sum" donations. This is a good "investment," I believe, because I get so much in return.
There are so many of you wonderful people that I would like to personally thank, but in lieu of that I will just single out one in particular, and I think that I speak for all of us when I say, Thank you Truth.

Did not read whole thread, its 14+ pages... but I am curious what you guys pay to host this page? How many GB/month does it use? And what you get for the cost? It is still crapping out now and then... so its likely getting maxed out again.
http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=6497633
This is who I use... they tend to be way lower cost than anything, especialy since I have been using them free for the last 3 years (it was their beta test when they went from hosting just corporate pages to allowing public/little guy pages)...
And yes by clickign the link above I get a few bucks toward my acount, helps pay for the urls and space I am paying for... I would guess you could possibly host this site for $20 a month through them, with their 2500 gb/mo offer. (If you need more they can offer more).
I just thought that since I cannot afford to donate, I could find a cheaper alternative... and possibly save you $50 a month. For me has been 100% reliable the last 3-4 years... although my sites are far from high traffic... but they do specialize in corporate sized pages. yet they still do little pages (like mine) for $2 a month.
Ketch
December 5th, 2006, 10:34 AM
For the price they pay 1and1's cheap hosting packages will not do.
I am with them as well (but leaving them soon). Not to mention 1and1 gives you a DB that's not on their servers, and exceptionally slow and unreliable it seems to me.
Its not the bandwidth for the site, it was the bandwidth for the DB that got capped yesterday.
It is really hard to scale DBs. You have to pay exponentially for a linear return on performance when it comes to DBs. That being said, adding a second DB server will give good returns, but after the third, and 4th, and 5th, you're not getting much but paying huge money for it.

Its weird though, I grew up after DOS, so I got squat when it comes to older AIX, and DOS stuff haha.
The reason you can't get a linear return when you add another database is because you add overhead to keep them synchronized. When you add a third, you double the overhead every time, and so the overhead becomes so large, that the return from adding another DBs can actuall hurt instead of help.
Anyway, keeping on topic, I will start donating after Christmas.
I will have to see what I can afford seeing as I am still in Post Secondary and Working at the same time.

(I just got done, yesterday, with my first of four chemo treatments (in my fifth series) that cost $7,000 each...so far I've racked up $150,000 in treatments and am happy that my insurance pays 80% of it. Great news. Thanks, Tiberius and chezious, I had another wonderful six hours of chemotherapy today and feel like crud, but am on my way out to teach a Bible Study tonight, a funeral tomorrow, and then headed toward Dallas for the weekend tournament (have a substitute preacher), so even though I feel awful, I'm still moving, smiling, and even laughing once in a while.

Yes, everyone who donates becomes a site supporter. We've also got much more exciting stuff coming up for those who have cared enough about the community to support it.
Awesome to hear that! :D I'm happy to help however I can, but if there's cool extras to boot so much the better. 8)
Rev we'll try to go easy on you at the tourney this weekend. ;) Glad you're still making it out.

Thanks, markwars, although I know you shouldn't tell fibs, and I know for a fact that no one is really going to go easy (as in, say, playing with a 400 point army against my 540 one) on me this weekend. <wry smile>

Heya!
I just dropped $5 into the offering plate. I don't know if I'll be able to contribute monthly but I will do what I can as I love this site. I'm looking forward to those extra features as well.
Just glad to help!

Just the monthly reminder to the $5 a month group...it's April (no foolin'), and time to ante up if you can. I did and I feel less foolish already.

Add my mundane monthly pittance, but over the months, I haven't missed; so that counts for something.

Yeah, I find it easier to pay in lumps as opposed to monthly payments. But my HSers $$ is being used on my car right now, :(

Oh, ouch! CA. Just try to remember to think of repair dollars in terms of new car payments; it makes them seem so much smaller.

Finally got around to sending a $5 donation. I don't know how often I'll be able to do this, but I'll try and do it every month.

That might help if I had ever made a car payment, The way it looks I'll have to pull $$ out of my savings for this, or I could just sell the car.

Yay! bunjee...I've missed seeing you post! (I've probably been spending too much time in the wrong sections.)Nah, things have been super crazy for me lately so I've only been on the boards sporadically. Heck, it took me this long to get my party goods on. Where is the champagne? Don't donors get free booze?

Who the hell are you? I don't ever recall seeing you around? :P
You better be posting from some cheap hotel in the middle of No Where, ID. I expect to see you at Hero-Quest II this weekend. So get in the car and keep on driving!

Another happy month on HeroScapers.com is almost finished, so I put my contribution for June into the PayPal pot and bumped this tread up so, maybe, some of the new folks will see it and be moved to give a bit themselves to the cause.

Oh, yes, and for those of you doing other shopping that want to drop a dime or 2 in the coffers...
Here is the Heroscaper's amazon link. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2F&tag=heroscapers-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325)
A percentage of your purchase goes to scapers when you use that link and it costs you nothing you weren't already going to spend!
Perhaps you need a new storage bin for your Marvel/SOTM/Wave 7 purchase, hmmm?

I'm pledging $5, just sent payment for June.
I've been lurking for a couple weeks, since I started playing/got addicted to this game. I've been absorbing all this heroscape goodness in large quantities...I'm glad to see there's a way to give back to this excellent community.

Bunjee, if that was supposed to show Heroscape merchandise, it didn't. I just got a redirect page with general merchandise on it.
