I know alot of you play different games and will be joining in different events at GenCon.

I myself used to play alot of RPGs when I was younger but haven't played in years but really would like to. (Maybe I can tag along with someone to watch another game in action)

Lets use this thread to discuss those Non-Heroscape things that either you plan on doing or that you have played before. Talk about vendors and pretty much anything else about GenCon itself outside of Heroscapers.

For example...

You can meet some of our community members at different booths at GenCon.

At Booth 2334 you can meet our very own IMax and check out his ultra cool dice towers, adventure bags and dice in person. VIXENTOR GAMES

At Booth 321 you can meet our very own messy eater wytefang and check out the cool products of Fantasy Flight Games

At booth 704 our Custom Terrain making guru Grishnakh will be at the Dark City Games booth and running some games for them.

At booth 125 you can meet Lord_Paul and his dad at the SFR, Inc booth.

sorry...hit the wrong button...but since I double posted I might as well use this for something...

For those that have been there before...

What do you carry around with you at the Con?

I am contemplating bringing my tactical vest so I can carry what I need for the scape tournaments and still have my hands free. Do you think people will think I am a terrorist?

Carry a can of bear mace and they'll think you're security. That might prove to be advantageous when you mace people in line, and cut in line as the person(s) run(s) away into a wall. I got a 32 ounce can of bear mace if you want to borrow it. It sprays like 30 feet so you can hose a whole line down before you even get to it. It'll be a time saver......

I am thinking that Febreeze will come in more handy than bear mace at genCOn...gamer funk is the enemy

Here's a fun Non-Heroscape everyone can play. It's free and can be played in anywhere from 5-15 minutes.

Stand at one of the dealer hall entrances facing the doors. Count how many people show you their badge. It's pretty funny to watch how many con goers assume you are the guy. Plus, the hilarity of it actually grows each time you get to tell the story to your friends.

Jim, I like the way you think my friend. :D

I personally will spend a little time playing D&D Miniatures, the most important event for me will be the Community Draft, probably the most fun and enjoyable DDM event there is. I may look into playing a simple board game like Zombies! or get into some Inn-Fighting too. I invite anyone who has time to kill to play Inn-Fighting with me, it is easy to learn and fun. Last year I played in a Champions Superhero RPG game that was fun but I am guessing I won't be able to find an open spot in such things this time.

Jim - God Bless you , I want to hang with you is all I got to say.

Robb- never heard of Inn-Fighting, but It sounds fun just from the name. How long is a game? I would love to play a game of Inn-Fighting with you. I am there for HS first, the Vendors hall second, open gaming next, the auction, and then checking out speakers or I am not even sure since I have not been to GC for 27 years, I guess it will be a little different.

I saw a thread where someone wanted to play Descent, I would be up for this one, it is long I know, but I own it and have not played yet, so If I play with someone who knows the game I may actually play it here.

LNOE I think will be a fun one to play with other hard core gamers too.

Yeah, I'm the Descent guy. I've got a thread in the board games forum going. I'd like to get a game together at some point with heroscapers. We are driving, so I'd be happy to bring my copy of the game (it's BIG) I'm also signed up to play a variety of things. The new Monsterpocalyps game from privateer press has me intrigued, I'll probably buy a few bosters and play that. I'm also doing True Dungeon, and a live action zombie survival LARP that should be great (silly) fun! I signed up to play a game of 4th edition D&D as well, to try out the new rules. Wednesday night Im playing a superhero RPG... The majority of my days will be spent on the dealer floor or playing heroscape though.

Inn-Fighting is a card and dice game that can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour usually. Each player (3-6 players) plays an adventurer in a bar fight with bystanders that help them and action cards that allow them to do strange things like make special attacks or steal victory points, etc. You gain victory points by knocking out adventurers or bystanders, the first player to 20 victory points wins and it can happen either very quick or very slow, usually somewhere in-between. I also have some other quick and easy games like Unexploded Cow and Bang!, both fun card games as well.

Yes, I own Inn Fighting... and I might try to play it at the WoTC Scheduled Inn Fighting events... really just to learn the rules. The rulebook is written horribly, but I think it might be a fun beer-n-pretzels type of game none the less. Who doesnt love a good ole D&D bar fight! LoL Not to mention, one of the characters you can get is a Beholder barfly LOL

I bought a bunch of general tickets for $2. Does anybody know how these work? If an event costs $8 to join to I need 4 tickets for it? or just one ticket to get in anything last minute? I know a newbie questions, but that is me, I am guessing 4 tickets for a $8 event?

Just curious.

Also how hard is it to get more General tickets, is it better to buy a bunch and have them verses having to find the place to buy them and then waiting in line?

OK, how long are the lines to get in , in the morning? Is is a madhouse? When do the doors open, and how much early is it worth being there?

Thanks in advance

Yes 4 $2 generic tickets would be needed for an $8 event.

It is better have the tickets in advance. If you show up to an event 10 -15 min. early and decide you need some tickets, you will still be in line when the event starts.

The convention center will be open when you get there. The dealer hall opens at 10am (I believe) and there will be a line/crowd at the door.

Also, you can only use the generic tickets if said event has an "open spot" for you...meaning people who regestered get a seat for sure... but if someone doesnt show, or they didnt fill up then your good to go.

Man I get so giddy when I think of gencon! I live downtown Indy So its like having the coolest convention ever in my backyard!

Since my favorite game Anachronism made its last death rattle, I'm gonna have to play more scape this year! I'm also excited about finding some new games like the Warcraft mini game (if its horrible we can always use the figs for conversions) and the new Mutant Chronicles Mini's game.

Its kinda sad though, since I starting going to gencon when it came to indy I think I have spent more time in the anime rooms and pacing the dealers floor than actual gaming. Any one else find themselves spending more time doing other activites than actual gaming?

Hey Mr. W - That is so cool, in your backyard, a very lucky man I would say. I am all about the gameing, and will hopefully spend a lot of time in the open gaming area. I am sure to spend time in the vendors section also.

Open Gaming Area question?

-- is it easy to get in a game with strangers?

-- if I bring a few games is it easy to find others to play with?

I would love to play some Illuminati with a bigger group and LNOE with some experienced players. Heck any ol' board game sounds great to me.

Should we create a list of non-heroscape exclusives that are expected to be there at Gencon 2008? Should that be its own thread?

Jean-Paul Valley replaced Batman in the Knightfall storyline, and eventually became Azrael. The DC HeroClix: Knightfall Batman will be offered at WizKids attended conventions in 2008 with the purchase of $50 in DC HeroClix product.

Additionally an exclusive DC HeroClix: Sinestro Corps Anti-Monitor “Guardian of Fear” variant will be offered at San Diego Comic Con, GenCon, and select shows in Europe. This variant features an all-new dial "with enough new powers to make the entire Green Lantern Corps shudder with fear!"

Battletech has an exclusive sculpt available (http://www.battletechuniverse.org/hpguplink/viewtopic.php?t=13794).

World of Warcraft CMG will be hosting exclusive playable demos (http://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/2008/06/12/15084) (maybe get to keep the figs?)

For us Gencon n00bs... I hear there are dice every year?

I got the dice last year in my goodies bag when I got there.

Mostly Heroscape for me. Five events in total. I'm also signed up for an Axis and Allies minis event. My son has signed up for several World of Warcraft TCG events in addition to one Heroscape event.

Depending on interest, I and a friend may be setting up some Lord of the Rings TMG play in an open play area Saturday night. PM me if you are interested.

OK. Near-death experience report. Prepare for a long story. Sit back, get some chips and settle in.

Black Industries was releasing the new 4th Edition Talisman at GenCon 07, and they only were able to get tjeir advance order of 200 copies, which they would be selling exactly 50 of per day.

I arrived at GenCon late Thursday morning, and I wandered the dealer's room to get a feel for it. This was, after all, my first time here. I located the B.I. booth and asked them how long it took them to sell the 50 copies that morning. "About 30 minutes" was their response. "Great!" I thought. Plenty of time. Now to go off and enjoy everything.

Friday morning I arrive ouside the doors at 9:30 and wait with the ever growing crowd for the doors to open at 10:00. In the process, I somehow wound up being about 10 rows of people farther back from the doors than when I started. Anyway, 10:00 comes, the doors open, and I quickly walk across the hall to the B.I. booth, where I find a line of people roughly a mile long, give or take. There's got to be 200 or more people in line, and it's only 10:03. Apparentlyon Thursday it took them a half hour to actually process the 50 sales for the people that had been lined up for that whole time.

OK, so that plan didn't work. Time to scope things out better. It turns out I was waiting at the doors that were, quite possibly, the farthest doors from the booth that any doors could be. I hadn't made my way outside the dealer's room much the previous day, so I found the closest doors to the booth, which were right in front of the WizKids booth. I explored where they went. I saw where to go to get to the outside area of those doors and filed that away for tomorrow's mission. Spent the rest of the day doing whatever.

Saturday morning comes around. I get an earlier start and camp out at the door at 9:15. I should probably say that the biggest reason I'm trying to get the game here, at GenCon (where it will cost full retail price) is that with the purchase of the game here, they give you a free exclusive promo card. I should probably also mention that I am a sucker for free exclusive promo things. So, the hallway fills up and the doors open at 10:00. The GenCon "security" people are saying things like "Walk!" and "Don't run!" and other synonyms. Being the good law-abiding guy that I am, I quickly walk to the booth. People are running past me on all sides, heading for whatever booth they need to be at. I cut through the hallway towards the booth only to find the line is already blocking the other end. I sneak through and now have to backtrack to get to the end of the line. I make it there, and after what seems like way too long, they start counting people in the line. I am number 78. Not looking good, unless everyone in line is with a non-buying partner. Not the case. Looks like everyone in line actually has another person with them to buy their extra Ebay copy.

So taking notes of what went wrong with this plan, I devise my new operation for Sunday, the last day to get this. (And if you're still with me reading this, I applaud your determination, unless you're only skimming to get to the near-death part to satisfy your desire for reading about bad things happening to other people. :D)

Sunday. I have my messenger bag on full of stuff (Food, water, the game I made that I will show to publishers, Scape stuff, several heavy hard-cover books, etc...). 9:00. I am sitting on the floor in the hall with a few other people. I am right next to the door. I am also not the biggest guy around. (This will matter shortly. You'll see.) Just before 10:00, with the hallway now full of people, the GC Security give their speech. "Walk." "No running." "Blah blah." The doors open. I step through and then begin running, with everybody else. (Here comes the near death experience part!) Some large guy runs past me on my left and grazes me, which causes a slight veer to the right. I straighten out and move forward. Momentum being what it is though, my messenger bag (full of stuff) continued to veer right for just an instant. Another (very) large guy runs past me on my right in that instant and seriously clips my bag, which now has a momentum of its own and begins to move forward, taking me with it. I am now running at what feels like a 45 degree forward angle. I can't slow down or stop, because my top half would continue onward and downward. I can't turn, because that's pretty much impossible. And my bag is pulling the top of me forward faster than my legs are running. The thought "Yeah, this is why you're not supposed to run!" runs through my head.

I'm still not entirely clear what happened next. My best guess is that my bag, which had swung forward with great force, now obeyed the laws of physics and began to swing back, which in turn pulled me back to an upright and stable, yet still running, position. OK. What just seemed like about a minute and a half was only about three seconds. And I lived. OK. I see the end of the line and make it there. Much closer than I was yesterday. Breathe. In and out. Talk with the cute girl in front of me in line. Good. After a while they count off the people in line. I'm number 53. Fifty...Three. I wait it out, because surely someone will not be buying a copy this time. No dice. (Actually, there were plenty of dice. Free dice with the Talisman logo instead of the "1," which I got some of. But that's not important right now.) I ask the person there at the booth, who I believe is an upper-up in the ranks of Black Industries, if there is any way to get a copy of the promo card that I just risked my life for. He said to come back at the end of the day and maybe he'll be in a good mood. I did just that. He gave me one. Then I went home and pre-ordered the game from Thought Hammer for a nice discount. Though the plane ride home is another story for another time.

So what about after hours gaming? Since I will not be able to participate in any Heroscape during the day I'd like the chance to play at least a few games. (I haven't even looked but are there any night tournaments after the dealers hall is closed?) I know about Heroscape at the Ram. Is that sort of a first come first serve type of thing? What about pick up games in the Heroscape area after hours? Or in one of the hotel lobbies? Anyway, looking forward to meeting as many of you guys and gals as possible this time around!
