View Full Version : The Great Sir Hawthorne Giveaway!!

Grungebob
August 16th, 2006, 12:47 PM
Last year we had a popularity contest and gave away a few Neraks. There was some whining about that method so this year we made a list and are giving away our extra Sir Hawthornes. We are of course giving most of them to folks who have directly helped our site or our events. There were some who were on this list but have been very vocal in a negative way about exclusives. Those individuals were removed from the list. The following individuals need to contact me with their addresses asap: If any of you on this list already have a Sir Hawthorne then please announce it here so that we may give it away to someone else.

:D

Good list! It's easy to run down the list and attribute positive reasons as to why these members were chosen to receive the fig.

And I agree with Finrod in offering congratulations to those above, as well as offering a word of thanks for what they do for the game here on 'Scapers.com, and outside of the site, as well.

CONGRATS AND THANKS TO ALL!

I agree with you guys that they're deserving of it when they've constantly made contributions for the community here and of the now defunct HQ.

Lucky bastards... I'll have to wait until the giveaway is done and see if there is anyone that might have an extra they're willing to trade something for...

I bought an expansion pack for a Nerak before... Many might think I was crazy for spending $13 for a Nerak, but I saw it as, I get what I want and the trader gets what he wants... Both parties are left happy.

The list was actually alot easier to make this year. As so MANY peeps who would deserve one were at the Con! :)

And yes we decided to take a couple names off the list. We thought: Dang if they hate exclusives so much then these might as well go to someone who dosn't despise them. Little Hawthorne needs a good home.

I don't understand this line of thinking. Unless the fact is that they LOVE the exclusives and just hate not having them. And if that is the case then that's what they should be saying.

Congrats to those on the list. What is the big deal about exclusives? If you want one go to Gencon where they will most likely give you one. As in my case I was unable to go to Gencon so I bought mine for $30.00 off of e-bay. I could not have went to gencon for $30.00 so I am happy. I really don't see the problem with exclusives.

Would it worsen my public standing any if I called 'bull' on that line in red in the first post? I mean, you can object to exclusives for any number of reasons, and many of those reasons would be very legitimate, but it goes without saying that everyone wants Sir H. even if they don't like him being exclusive. And philosophically objecting to exclusives removing you from the list only seems like it'd make people more bitter, and that's not what we want, is it? Seems like using physical prizes to discourage freedom of expression: Like exclusives or you don't get one! Me no likie.
In fact, while I'm babbling, I'd like to say that I really don't like these oh-so-public give-aways/contests for exclusives at all. It's like dogs fighting over bones. Since obviously everyone wants one, why not just privately give them out to those you see fit as being worthy? What's the advantage of putting a spotlight on it and making people compete?
I know y'all're just trying to be generous and all, and I do approve in theory, I just think y'all're going about it in the wrong way.

I know what you mean, but let's face it: they aren't elminating those people from the list because they seriously think they don't want one. They are eliminating them because they don't like their attitudes. You can agree or disagree with that reasoning, but it's still their perrogative. I can give a sir hawthorne to someone just because I like their avatar or because of the color of their socks. This is simply a way they have selected to choose which lucky people shall recieve said prizes.

Well, yes, it's their prerogative, but it's not very conducive to a healthy community to be airing the division so blatantly in public. And it's most certainly very different from something random like sock color. It's over a relevant issue with actual emotions and intelligent thoughts tied up into it. Is this really what we want to do? Make it publicly known that we're punishing people for disagreeing with our school of thought?
I disagree with the basic principle of it entirely and wholeheartedly. I refuse to support anything that would make people hesitant to freely air their opinions on a hotly-debated subject.

This below sums it up. We assumed these people who were so vocal about how much they hate exclusives would not appreciate them as much as some others. It is a simple fact, and not a punishment at all. Air your thoughts freely. Be as negative as you want.

Well said. If they wanted to exclude certain people for airing an opinion that is their right, a little childish, but it is their right. The mistake was publically stating that people were eliminated for such reasons.

The people on the list have all done something respectivly for the community, and there are more that have done stuff for the community that are not on the list. those are just the folks that got the luck of the draw.

I agree there are other people that may deserve one as well, but those that got it by no means did not deserve it.

That may be true, but I still think the public shot at the complainers was uncalled for by the board administration and will not serve to strengthen the community.

That is my only complaint. If they had not taken that shot then I really can't see anyone criticizing this move. They people on the list were well deserving IMO.

I understand that you appear to feel that this is not right to "tell" people that they are being dis-included, but I feel that there is some merit to publicly posting whom will be getting one. It makes others think, "why did that guy get one?" Then they can read the lucky one's posts, contibutions, and conduct and see what merited them receiving a cool freebie.

To further comment on why I do support the statement that certain folks have been dis-included, I'd have to say that bashing the aspects of the game when it was very possible that there would be an exclusive based upon last year's giveaway is not positive or productive to Heroscape, Hasbro, this site, or this community.

I managed to get an extra one that I'm sending to a deserving person. I could have very easily sold it on eBay, but that's not what this community is about.

My final words about the dislike of the notification that people were dis-included would be that the admins put in the charter that they have final authority over the content and conduct on this site. Love it or leave it, but please don't go, seriously, so just love it, 'kay?

Man, that's rich. It reminds me of how, every time we release a Codex, about a quarter of our feedback is complaining - from people who did precisely jack squat. Nothing makes me want to throw up my hands and walk away like people bitching about other people doing good things.

You guys want those others to get Hawthornes so bad, throw 'em some money. Buy one on eBay and send it to them. Or start a campaign to get those people back on the list. Write letters to Grungebob and Truth about why Dude X deserves a Hawthorne, and tell them you would be pleased to pay the postage to mail it.

Because when you're doing nothing, nothing at all, with absolutely nothing to contribute, complaining about how other people are actually doing things is a load of crap. When you contribute, you earn the right to *****. Ironically, when you contribute, you get a sense of how much work it is to do something useful, and you end up bitching less.

This below sums it up. We assumed these people who were so vocal about how much they hate exclusives would not appreciate them as much as some others. It is a simple fact, and not a punishment at all. Air your thoughts freely. Be as negative as you want.

And yes we decided to take a couple names off the list. We thought: Dang if they hate exclusives so much then these might as well go to someone who dosn't despise them. Little Hawthorne needs a good home.

You are not being very honest I think. Do you really think that the people that don't like exclusives don't like the figs? They love the figs, they just hate the fact that they are not widely available, IMO.So you think that with our limited supply we should have given these folks an exclusive? Even after we read their complaints? It is funny that you support complaining and yet do not support reasoning.

I don't really care who you give them to. I am just saying that I think your reasoning is flawed. I don't believe that those that hate exclusives hate the figs and cards. They hate the fact that they are not widely available.

Btw, I don't mind the complaining about exclusives. I personally don't really care that much, but it other want to complain then have at it.

Let's just calm down everyone.

Once again, I think it was very nice of BG and Truth do give a SH to people they thought have contributed to the community.

I just wish that they had stopped at that and not took an unnecessary shot at the exclusives complainers. It tainted their good deed IMO.

I agree that critizing good deeds is uncalled for, however in this case the good deed is not being criticized. The criticism is about the public shot they took at exclusives complainers.

Uh, Imax, did it ever occur to you that some of us are perhaps too dirt ****ing poor to be able to afford to buy Hawthornes off of Ebay? For the past few weeks the ol' bank account has had exactly ninety-seven cents in it. Don't tell me to spend money I don't have. (The internet connection is free for me, in case you're wondering.)
Secondly, I like to think I've contributed enough to the community overall to be able to complain every once in a long while. It's not like I make a semi-regular event of complaining about decisions from the higher ups. (I'm surprised that this was actually Truth's decision too, but whatever. No one ever said I'd always agree with him... apparently just 99.99% of the time.) If you don't think I've earned that right yet, then I can only ask what else is it that I need to do. I like being useful, so if anyone really thinks I could or should be doing more, go ahead and tell me. I live to serve. :P

Okay so the shot at complainers may have been unnecessary. Just so you know where to direct your animosity. It was my call. I was being tongue in cheek about them not wanting one, but in all reality there a few peeps over at Hasbro who bust tail to give the extra effort to make a great game AND to appeal to the gamer fans that you guys claim are overlooked at every turn. FACT is that a Con exclusive draws more GAMERS into the game. Whether you like the fact that its available to you or not, its helping push our part of the game's market. So yeah I get a little peeved that there seems to be complaining about every possible thing at every possible corner.

Kark, you're right. You've had contributions in every Codex, long stories and short that have made it a better magazine. Plus you've done other stuff, too, like the Halls and stuff. Plus you're a sport, and a decent guy.

So I bundled frustrations and missed the mark on my critique. I certainly don't expect you to pay money you don't have. Broke is a pain in the ass. Sorry to offend, Kark.

It just bothers me to see guys like Truth and GB really making an effort, putting out their own cash to mail stuff, schmoozing for freebies from Hasbro that they won't even keep, and have to take crap. It's bull, is what it is - these two guys bust more ass for the fans of this game than nearly anyone outside the guys at Hasbro. When a dude busts his own nuts as much as these guys do, he ought to be entitled to a whole damned lot of leeway. Truth and GB deserve more credit than anyone I can think of. We let Hero cuss, insult and otherwise break all the rules, but at this point, GB and Truth deserve more carte blanche than even the godfather.

So cool it with the complaints, whether you've earned the right to whine or not (and that's not directed at Kark, that's a global 'shut up'). These cats have earned the right to not have to take your crap.

I don't believe in "free passes" because of former good (and anticipated future) good deeds. However, I am not trying to crucify them either.

Truth is a stand-up guy and admitted his mistake. That's cool and no grudges will be held. My complaint of his action is over.

Thanks guys. I just don't want anyone to feel that they are neglected or seperate from the community over a statement.

Everyone here has there place (purpose, use, ect) that'e why we call this a community. From the quarky antics of our goofy lovable members that make us laugh and bring smiles to us everyday. To the members that bring us resources that Hasbro hasn't provided us with, that help us show other members all of the ideas and inventive thoughts that we have.

This site is intended for the shared Knowledge, Experience, Creativity and Information that IS Heroscape. I'm not saying that HS is "My Life" nor am I saying that I don't care about it. The anger/saddness of one member spreads throughotu the site like wildfire.

If one person holds anger, and it shows in their posts, those reading could become enflamed. This site unlike HQ set down rules QUICK! Trying to avoid those spiffs and spatts that caused some members to leave.

When a member packs their bags over something like that it makes me sad. We've lost their thoughts, their ideas, GONE, No More! If someone decides to leave over a loss of love for the game, then it was good having them and it's still sad to say goodbye but it was a good...Goodbye.

Let's keep things inside the Hex's people, you leave the map, your outa' the game!

And yes we decided to take a couple names off the list. We thought: Dang if they hate exclusives so much then these might as well go to someone who dosn't despise them. Little Hawthorne needs a good home.

It is generous, but I don't think it would help either, CA. You'd have more the same issues if you gave your figure away publicly.

I'm honored to get my Hawthorne from the big guys here. Last year I never begged for a Nerak online and figured I'd have to buy mine on eBay or get it at the TRU event. It was at my local TRU that I secured my one figure (arrgh! I tried to get multiples for other folks, but the lady would have none of that. I suppose that is the 'right' way of distributing them).
This year I didn't beg for a Hawthorne and just assumed I'd have to go the way of eBay or another hopeful TRU event.

I'm honored to get this Hawthorne from the big guys. I knew I'd get my Hawthorne one way or another ($$$), but I'm keeping this one because it came straight from GB directly to me. That's an honor I'm not going to give up.

I'll be happy to sniff around my local TRU if the event arises this year and snag some for 'Scapers who have yet to secure a Hawthorne, but uh-uh, no one's touching the exclusive I got from this thread.

I'm proud to receive it from the big wigs!!!!

Cupid,

The argument was NEVER about those who got rewarded for their participation on this board. Each and every name on that list were richly deserving of the recognition.

The bad vibes came from that single comment that affected those of us who very repectively complained about about exclusives in previous threads. It gave out the "we're ok, you are not ok" statement that creates a bit of a rift. It's all about non-attribution towards people who might not agree with the establishment. If that exclusion statement wasn't included, there would of been 10 less pages to this thread. That's as best as I can describe it.

This whole issue is nothing new. Nerak brought up the same sort of frustration last year as SH did this year. We just have to agree that there will never be a consensus on this subject and be happy with that.

I think most of you know me by now. I don't usually get that worked up about things, except that of exclusives. We all have sticking points.

Thanks for being mature about the shot at the complainers, Truth. I personally agreed with Kark and failed to see the rationale behind the removal of complainers from the list. If anything many of the complainers are probably the ones who want Sir Hawthorne the most and just cannot afford him on Ebay. I think I would fall into that group of complaining have-nots! =P

Also I complain because as a have-not I feel bad for all the other people who cannot get their hands on an exclusive.

Anyway thanks again for your mature response to our comments. Also props to whomever came up with the giveaway itself. Giving something back to members who have contributed to the HS community over the year is great :P

See, and I am still behaving myself. I wanted to include a comment about how I wasn't sure that Sir Hawthorne was that good of a figure anyway to see if it would spark debate, but I didn't. 'Cause I'm a good boy.

I refuse to support anything that would make people hesitant to freely air their opinions on a hotly-debated subject.

what i hear is a double standard. you say that people are getting "punished" for expressing their opinion, and not being on the "list". yet isn't the list a way of expressing an opinion? you state that it isn't conductive to a healthy community? how can that possiblly be? you have multiple sides to a "healthy" community. you have one part that expresses like / dislike for some concept (exclusive figures), you have one part, or participant (in any capacity) saying that they are giving "freebies" to select people (as they see fit), which is a form of self expression. just like people can debate some topics, and others can be an example (to get credit for an act, to shower praise on others, to discount others, the list goes on and on), but the bottom line is, that this thread is simply self expression, just as the debate of exclusives is self expression as well.

i know this post is problably irrevent at this point, just started reading this thread this morning, so sorry if i am spouting off.

what i hear is a double standard. you say that people are getting "punished" for expressing their opinion, and not being on the "list". yet isn't the list a way of expressing an opinion? you state that it isn't conductive to a healthy community? how can that possiblly be? you have multiple sides to a "healthy" community. you have one part that expresses like / dislike for some concept (exclusive figures), you have one part, or participant (in any capacity) saying that they are giving "freebies" to select people (as they see fit), which is a form of self expression. just like people can debate some topics, and others can be an example (to get credit for an act, to shower praise on others, to discount others, the list goes on and on), but the bottom line is, that this thread is simply self expression, just as the debate of exclusives is self expression as well.

i know this post is problably irrevent at this point, just started reading this thread this morning, so sorry if i am spouting off.

Hail. I'm a completely new member. Though, I have browsed the forums now and then the last few weeks. Anyway, I just had to comment on all of this.

One object can be many different things. Hawthorne's exclusivity is hardly his only quality and not nearly his most important. Hawthorne as an exclusive is not the same thing as Hawthorne as a playable figure in all aspects of the game as a game. There is a difference between criticizing exclusives (simply the status of "being an exclusive") and criticizing a playable figure.

It seems analogous to being unwilling to befriend someone of a different religion you don't believe in. I have plenty of friends of so many faiths (or lack of for so many reasons) because of college and the inner-city. Those people are not their religions just as Hawthorne isn't his exclusivity.

And anyway, it's just common sense that stating this publicly is totally unnecessary. It is obviously only going to cause harm or resentment. Unless you really thought everyone was going to be that damn curious.

Please, don't take offense. I just feel very strongly about these concerns, the people concerned, and everyone being worried about arguing over this.

Here's a little advice: get Bawls. You'll learn a lot more if you suck it up and discuss things even when it makes you uncomfortable. Even the people you believe to be the least intelligent have something worth hearing now and then. Don't miss out just because it's easier to not listen.

Opening up my package today was a great way to end the week! I just can't say thank you enough times to the folks responsible for this! But I'll try anyway.

Thanks guys! I'll use him in my game on Sunday, and hopefully he won't betray me too badly. Thanks for helping others get their hands on the good stuff. It's worth pointing out that these guys (GBob, Truth, etc.) could have sold off these Sir Hawthornes to help fund their GenCon trip. But they're giving lads (and lasses too?) and I feel lucky and honored to be on the recieving end of their generosity. Thanks folks.

Our Saturday evening casual worship is beginning in about 18 minutes. I checked the mail box before that and what do you know! Sir Hawthrone was there. Thanks, Grungebob. Thanks, truth. I promise I won't try to convert the little black knight <grin>.
edit: So, rushed home with Sir H. The first game, my opponent chose him and on the second turn with him BACKSTAB! This is rich, even if it never happens again.

Ha! Back-stabbing his way across the battlefield? I went into my garage and there he was! He'd already crossed the field, climbed the ladders, taken the castle flag down and stomped it in a blind rage!

thanks again to anyone who had a part in getting a sir hawthorne to me.

by the way, i really like him a lot. he is cheap and strong and can bond excellently with the macdirk warriors (with his life of 6!) and with the werewolf darklord (he makes a good protector for him). plus, just put an extra werewolf on the lucky 20 sider glyph and forget about a backstab.

thanks guys, good to know that i wasnt completely wasting my time in film school (except that i still need to get these last two shorts editted and in some festivals or something).

after i posted the original photograph a few hours ago i did a little self-indulgent experiment...

so here's what HEROSCAPE:the movie would look like if i were directing it...

"IN A WORLD..."

http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/5574/thxuz7.jpg

if i were more motivated i'd bring my "green-screen" out of storage and put it in the background of the photos (not to mention using proper lighting) so i could add sky the right way... (not just cutting the background out in photoshop!)

anyway, thanks...
