View Full Version : GenCon Cost Dilution

Wind Lane
May 15th, 2008, 03:43 PM
This thread is to help people going to GenCon find people they can share a hotel room, car ride, or any other shared expense.

If you've got a room and have extra space, post it in here.
If you've got a car and are willing to take on passengers, post it here.
If you need any of the above, post it here.
If you're looking for more people for a gathering, post it here.

Let's all share our experiences and cut our costs in the process.

EDIT: Please, no people under 18 posting in here. It is important that we keep things appropriate and safe, especially in this day and age.

If you need a car ride from Little Rock to Indianapolis (probably stopping over night in Mount Vernon, Illinois (negotiable), leaving on Tuesday and arriving at GenCon before noon on Wednesday (again, negotiable), PM me.

I think spending several hours in a car with you would be almost like a Vision Quest (and I don't mean the movie)

Happyjosiah and I are driving there, although I am sure we will not have any room. But even when we arrive to our destination (his wife's parent's house) it would be a 2 hour drive to Gencon every morning which would not be fun. We are at least looking for information on a good hotel or someplace closer that could be more helpful for 1 of the nights. Thanks!

Ok so I have a room that I need to share with some folks right near the convention center. Wytefang originally booked it and I was going to stay with him but now that he is working for FFG they are putting him up in their rooms.

If you are looking for a place to stay let me know via PM.

I am so far planning on Friday and Saturday... but I might do all 4 days if I can share a room... so I may need a room to share, if I can get the guts to share a room with someone I do not know...

If I still have access to the Ford 500 I can offer a car ride from Detroit area down... other wise I will be driving in a super-gas guzzler lol... Ford Lightning and will not have much space in the truck cab, but might still be able to take one person with a lite cargo load. (space behind seats for stuff, unless you want to brave putting it in the back of the pickup truck)

Last year my sons and I brought PB&J to the hotel room. Each morning we made sanwiches. Those plus snacks and water in our backpacks meant not having to take a break for lunch each day (MORE GAMING!) plus it meant saving some money over the VERY high con food prices.

I did the same thing. I also grabbed a couple of pieces of fruit from the hotel every day too. The water is a MUST!!! Do not pay for drinks at the Con!

Kids,

O'Malias is the closet grocery downtown. If you can't bring it with you it's worth the "speed shopping". Take a cab hit the basics and then get back to your hotel.

Our local Dollar Store has really nice Bumblebee Tuna and Chicken Salad things with crackers that I lived off of during the days last year. They were 3/$1 (at the regular grocery, they're about a $1.50 each). I'm doing the same this year, except that I learned I like the chicken salad a lot better than the tuna. (I also sinned a bought a bunch of dollar boxes of Slim Jims...bad for the body, good for the soul.)

I'm trying to remember...I think it was The Three D's (but it might have been a different letter). It's right next door to the Motel 6.

Michigan Scapers:

June 28 is my point of no return - need to have concrete commitments before then.

More Specific Update:
I have pending lodging for my son and myself. I would prefer to drive as I need to get around Indy and don't want to have to rely on public transportation.

I *may* be interested in sharing a room if the combined cost is cheap enough or if my friend falls through. I also *may*be interested in riding down with someone else.

I can comfortably sit 2 adults in my car, and your gear. I'm actually part way between Grand Rapids and Lansing, so if you are in that area I can give you a ride, or if you can get to some point around the route (Battle Creek, for instance) we can pick you up. We can discuss cost via PM.

Looking to attend the whole conference, or at least the first few days.

As I said above, you'd be on your own for lodging but hey, at least Onacara is available for a roommate. Although, if my lodging falls through my son and I will be looking, and having traded with Onacara several times I will admit I am willing to room with him.

I can contribute food more readily than money (though I can contribute money) if we need to share a room or if someone else drives.

UPDATE: Roomate found. I'll remove this notice if anything changes. Thanks!

Kahrma, Paradox22, and Darkmantle are looking for another Gen-Con attendee to split travel and room expenses. Accomodations will be 1st class at the Westin Indianapolis (http://www.starwoodhotels.com/westin/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=1033&EM=aa_Google_westin_indianapolis_122705), connected by skywalk (hamster tunnel) to the convention hall! No need for a gamer to ever step outside! If you can meet us in KC, you're welcome to join the ride to Indy as well.

Cost would be:

Room - $200 - covers Wed., Thurs., Fri., and Sat. nights (Just $50 a night!)
Gen-Con badge (http://www.gencon.com/2008/indy/attendees/registration.aspx) - $65 covers all 4 days. PRE REGISTRATION ENDS 6/28.
Travel - We'll be splitting up fuel expenses if you'd like to ride along.
Food - You'll be on your own for this, go as cheap/extravagant as you like for 4 days.
Gaming - this will depend on how many events you participate in, and on your self control in the dealer's hall ;)

There are still spots left in many HS events (http://gencon.highprogrammer.com/gencon-indy-2008.cgi/search/?action=s&avail=0&start=0&end=0&game=HEROSCAPE&title=&gm=&group=&minage=&maxage=&minexp=&maxexp=&t=SPA&t=KID&t=SEM&t=ANI&t=LRP&t=TCG&t=BGM&t=MHE&t=TRD&t=ENT&t=CGM&t=TDA&t=GEN&t=NMN&t=UNK&t=HMN&t=RPG&t=WKS&t=ZED&t=RPGA&.submit=Search+for+events&.cgifields=t), but there may not be for long!

PM or post up if you're interested in joining us for 96+ hours of gaming NIRVANA

My schedule is set now; I am coming down from Grand Rapids/ Lansing area in Michigan Wednesday night. There is space for one car to be parked at my place while we are gone.

I have 2 open seats, $50 should cover your round-trip share of gas. you will need to find other lodging and travel arrangements within Indy.

I plan to leave the con Sunday afternoon.

You want to know how to dilute costs? Have 5 guys and 4 girls share a 2-bed hotel room (just don't tell the hotel manager...). Last year at Origins we had a girl sleeping in the closet, but we had 11 last year. 9 should be a bit more comfortable - we may not even have to use the window ledge! Fortunately for me, I would be getting 3-4 hours of sleep a night if I had a king-size bed to myself so I don't mind sleeping on the floor - I have way too much 'Scape to play!

Haha. No. This is an excuse for his wife to see her family while happyjosiah and I are at gencon. Unfortuantely her family is in Bengal territory in Ohio, so that means an annoying drive for jo and me every day unless we find a place. We don't want to stay at Gencon every night, but 1-2 would be nice.
