Here is the rundown of the final championship match between The Juggernaut and Joe.
Forsaken waters map
He has
3 sets of arrow orcs
3 swog riders
Raylin
Krug
I have (which this team was 10-2 by the end of the weekend)
3 4th mass
raylin
AE
SO it starts off. AE drop on the first roll. I roll initiative as well. (Which I need to do)
His entire army is jam packed in his starting zone.
So i land up high in the middle of the board, and one by the attack glyph.
Take the glyph and shoot raylin. Take her out in two shots. BOOYEA!. Final shot misses krug
At this point I figured I had it in the bag. that was a huge upset for him.
He brings a swog to the base of the center area and engages one of my AE. Brings 3 arrows along for the ride. 1 AE goes down in the skirmish.
SO far, i'm looking pretty good. I have 12 4th mass alive and well waiting to kill off the orcs and swogs.
Next turn.
I had a choice to keep my high ground and peg off guys from a distance or jump down and go for the granade. Raylin was out of the picture, and he had orcs clustered by his swogs, by me and in his home area.
This is what cost me the game:
I chose to run down and do the granade. I throw 3 granades. and roll 1 skull for each and botch one other. Nothing died. all arrow gruts survived due to swog assistance.
He gains high ground and kills off two more AE.
I start moving 4th mass in. but only get 2 dice cuz I no longer have the attack glyph. High ground and swog assistance....AG are rolling 3 defense. I take on down.
Now he has the center of the board. Control of the attack glyph.
it goes back and forth. I peg off an arrow grut, he takes out some ae. I'm starting to roll like ass at this point. Krug starts working his way around the board to my area.
Unfortunately, this was a flat board, so krug moved pretty fast. I was taking pot shots at him, so he had about 4 damage by the time he got to me. Unfortunatly. I started to realize by this point, i was running out of 4th mass. I had 6 left. So I started to pull back. I was botching attacks and couldn't kill anymore orcs. Krug was able to double engage a couple of my figures, due to stupidity on my part.
killed off raylin with krug, and also shot up my final 4th mass.
he had krug with 3 health left
2 arrow gruts
3 swogs left.
If I would have kept the AE up on top and snipped off the swogs, I would have had him. I can't blame dice rolling on this one. I tried a risky manuver, and failed which left me in a really bad position.
But hey!! I had to let other people win something :P I already stomped a mudhole pretty much all weekend.
So there it is folks.

I hope so. It would be nice to see some real competition around there :P The only one who really held his own with me was RY. Not only was he the only one to defeat me (besides then unknown champion), but we've been matched up against each other nearly ever day of tournies. One match we had (For win a wave) was pretty much equal. I even had him, but he won due to time running out and points. But it was a hell of a battle. I used different armies for Win a wave than the General and championship ones.
For win a wave, I was dabbling in experimentation like most that entered.

So you lost in the championship, good job, better luck next time, Ry was ranked 1st wasnt he? Who knocked him out? you?

there were two main tourneys.
General war tourney - which I won
and the championship- which I placed 2nd
and yes, I was the one that knocked Ry out.

:-P I think I want yours as I have still never beat you!
I got some posting to do I guess, but I wanted to start with NWOjedi right here.
NWO is officially my nemesis. ;-) We matched up more than any other players in the events. I enjoyed all 19 games I played at Gencon, but pitching dice with NWO was by far the highlight for me; All 4 games were a blast!
Even at the end of the last game when he was eliminating me from the champ tourney, I was smiling and laughing. Great times and great games.
NWO, thank you!! Congrats on your 1st and 2nd place finishes.
And Above all else Congrats to spider_poison (joe/unknown guy) for taking 1st in the championship and first in the Shackle Tourney

LOL. and get some ass to release some of that tension. :) I have to say. If there was a 2 person Team tourney. Ry would be my first choice as partner. Just cuz we are so evenly matched.

Why did you go for Raelin over the Swogs, I would have targetted the Swog riders 1st since they boost attack as well as defense + have bonding
Nwojedi

because, it would hard to kill swogs with 5 defense dice. Plus, even if I killed off the swogs, he still had krug to bond with. I should have stayed up high and killed the swogs off on the next turn, but didn't find them much of a threat. If the granades would have hit, it would have been devestating.

If you had glyph + height wouldn't that have been 5 attack vs 5 defense, I am assuming height since you said you landed high...
Nwojedi
August 14th, 2006, 11:36 PM
yea, 3 of them and one on the glyph which was ground level. But Raelin would have caused a lot of problems in the future, so I had to take her out first. I took her out in 2 shots. Which was key. It was every turn after that, that I botched.

Personally I only use the grenade attack against venoc vipers. 2 dice are too easily defensed. The only other units I'd use it on the the Wave 5 ones that don't get the boost against special attacks

you do this every time a tourney is posted...you second guess the top finishers and their armies and it is damned annoying.

I was just asking a question. You clearly did well and was different than how I would have done it so I was curious why you chose that option. Listening to other people's atrategies and thought processes can only strengthen my play

plus you have to take in account. that I was running on 4 hours of sleep per day. When your working games all day long from 9-8 and then having to get up at 7:30 and not getting to sleep till 2 or 3 am. it plays a toll on you on the 4th day. Judgements are off. Your not as strong pychologically as you are on the first and second days. So sitting back and analyzing the situation now....when you have the rest and comfort of your own home. It makes it rational and easy. I'm sure if hitler would have been able to sit on war desisions for a couple of days and review and do over a battle that was already done. he probably would have won the war. :P
Remember. I was rolling granade attacks against arrow orcs. arrow Orcs with 1 defense die. 2 if they were next to a swog. If even one of my granades would have rolled 2 skulls. He would have lost an entire squad and a swog. It was a coin flip. Looking back. yea I should have held my high ground and took out all who came near me. personally, after taking out raylin. I kinda eased off and went for risky moves, cuz i thought i had it in the bag. I underestimated the arrow gruts.

WTF? Why are you guys even addressing his posts? Did you forget that Krug isn't the only Troll on the Heroscape board?

Isn't Krug an Ogre? A troll with regeneration would be a cool figure though

i'm just answering his questions. I don't think he's trolling at this point. and I have been reveiwing the battle in my head about 100 times since that day. and realize exactly what moves I did wrong and when. I just got too overconfident and cocky during that match. I know...i know. it's hard to believe, but it's true. :P

I did the same thing against you in the semifinal match...Every other game I advanced Raelin with the marros and MBS, but not that one. It was like I put the fish in the barrel for you and than handed you the loaded rifle. I may have been a little cocky from beating you the previous day.
hind site is always 20/20. The move where spider put that swog in the water in front of the hill...I thought it was brilliant.
