Of all the new movies coming soon, Iron Man, Wall-E, Forbidden Kingdom, the one that I am most excited to see has to be Speed Racer! I watched the cartoon as a kid and enjoyed it, but it's the visuals in the trailers that really have me motivated. Honestly, I'd just about shell out eight bucks to watch all the trailers on the big screen - I sit at my computer at night and play 'em in HD just enjoying the timing and visuals. Pathetic? Mebbe. But this is a must see for me.

I understand where you are coming from, but am in complete fear that this is an extreme exercise in graphic effects and no story and/or entertainment.

The trailer, kind of reminds me of Val Kilmer Batman (I didn't like those Bat movies).
The actor playing Speed Racer is as badly casted for the role as the dude who played Agent 47 was.

I agree with this list except for Starship Troopers. ST cracked me up with the over-the-top statements on fascism. Plus it was a lot of fun to watch I thought. "We're in it for the species boys and girls." :)

I don't know, this movie looks like it might stink worse than a big bag of poop.
I don't think I'll ever know for sure, because I have zero interest in seeing it.
Those Wachowski (spelled wrong?) brothers lost me after Matrix 2. I died a little inside after seeing that movie. They really were good writers at one point. I guess its true, mo' money, mo' problems.
I can't wait until 30 years from now, to be able to see ground up remakes of Star Wars episodes I-III and the Matrix trilogy. That should be proper.

But It's a nostalgia-need.
Grew up on Racer, bought the VHS tapes, sold them and eventually bought the 4 or 5 DVD releases.

I'm going to see this movie in the theater with my two oldest children. It'll be my daughter's first time going to a theater.
I could care less if the movie is terrible, I'm really excited to share a childhood pastime with my children - regardless how mutated it is from he original source or variations of the Mach 5 there may be!
It should be fun for us.

I never watched Speed Racer as a kid, so I don't have that hook. The trailers don't do anything for me. I'm not going to say I won't watch it, but I'll probably wait for the video release. If people I know come back from it and say it is really good I'll give it a shot in the theaters.

I'll be 41 this year. It is hard to explain to the younger folks around here just why Speed Racer holds a special place in our memories. You have to understand that before Speed, cartoons were just cartoons, not animated adventures. Speed had a style that was captivating and had never been done. Sure, if you look at it today it looks dated, but at the time it was so new and fresh we were just in awe. I was YOUNG when it popped on to TV in the quiet way it did (they put it on the air but never really advertised nor marketed it). Later, when I was about 17-18 I discovered Robotech, and had the same feeling as when I watched Speed.... Totally captivated! I hope this movie can deliver that experience to this old jaded movie goer. I want to love this movie like I did The Matrix and Sin City!

I missed Speed Racer the first go around, but I know exactly what you're talking about. I had the same feeling about Battle of the Planets and Star Blazers when they had their first runs in the US. Robotech was great. My all time favorite has to go to Thundarr, the Barbarian for having balls enough to go post apocalyptic on Saturday Morning Cartoons.

Flash Gordon was also quite good. Battle of the Planets/G-Force, Starblazers!!! All great and captivating as well.. But Speed was the first and Robotech pushed the genre to places it had never gone. These series transformed cartoons into a whole new level of validity. Shows like Johny Quest and Thundercats would never have been created without these influential predecessors.

Thinking of it that way, I probably would have loved it. I didn't care for the American cartoon fare when I was growing up. I loved Robotech and Voltron. Speed just wasn't on TV that I was aware of, but I don't really remember watching that much TV until I was about 10 (early-mid eighties)

As a trivial aside, Speed Racer only existed in the form of occasional comic books for years in this country, due to censorship laws. It was only allowed to air on cable television, which hadn't turned to the adult late-night animation market yet, and so it was nowhere to be found. The reason- it is too violent.
If anyone has one of those Battle of the Planets DVDs that also has the same Science Ninja Team Gatachaman episodes on it, compare and contrast the footage. So much was removed from the show that 7 Zark 7, a robot mascot, had to be inserted in an even more jarring manner than Raymond Burr in Godzilla to compensate. Robotech remastered even reveals nudity in the source material. Yet the crime and teen pregnancy rate in Japan is low low low. Go figure. (hint: education)

I remember watching Speed Racer when I was in kindergarten or around that age (they must have been reruns because I'm only 17), and I loved that show! I particularly remember an episode in which Speed was knocked into a canyon and drove up the canyon wall to get out! I just hope they keep all the Mach 5's gadgets in the movie.

I always liked Speed Racer, though Chim-Chim can get out of hand. I am a little worried about the cast they picked- some young guys that probably don't have the perspective to understand their roles, and some old people that probably are just doing it for career reasons other than a love of Speed Racer.
I'll probably see it eventually, but I would rather have seen an Incredibles-style version of the film with no live action. For that matter, a redo of the whole series with that style of animation would have been extraordinary.
I shudder to think of how I would feel if this was Robotech instead of Speed Racer. Yeah, with that in mind, I am definitely scared of how this movie will turn out.

Props HEH ! I may do the same with my girls. They've been to the theater before, but not for a while and there hasn't been crap at the show lately for 5 year-olds, this may be one to take them to. Besides, they love cars, as well as anything Justice League and enjoy Marvel Alliance (yeah, daddy's influence shows). I used to love Speed Racer as a kid and like you said, it doesn't have to be a great movie for me, but as long as it's fun for the kids, then I'll dig it and the fond memories of my childhood favorite show will be a bonus.

I'm cool with Batman but I didn't like the Val Kilmer-Clooney Batman (which all I watched in theaters). Michael Keaton isn't Bruce Wayney enough, but Batman 1 and 2 sure kicks ass (thanks to Burton). Batman Begins was great but the aftershock of Spider-Man 2 made me love it less than I should but I'm sure anticipating the upcoming one.
Back to Speed. Wow, before GB's post, I never thought Speed Racer was that iconic. I grew up (ages 5-8 ) with Daimus, Speed Racer (Macross was too complex for me then), and Bioman. My mom would rent betamax (later VHS) tapes every weekend and life was great. Mach 5 was my dream car till I was in high school.
The movie. I'm not optimistic about it but I will watch it even if it would suck. I have no kids so i don't have to act like I'm not at all interested when I go to the theater :D. I hope they'll plug the original soundtrack even for just 3 seconds in the movie.

Wow, what a trip down menory lane for me. I'm now listening to the Space Battleship Yamato soundtrack by Hiroshi Miyagawa. What a blast- orchestrations, beats AND disco guitars! Gotta love the seventies!
And yes, the theme is here, but it was purely instrumental in the original version. If you really want me to, I could burn you a copy. These CDs are out of print, and would likely cost $40 or more.
Man, when I first got this soundtrack in the summer of 1990, probably from Nikaku Animart in San Jose, I listened to nothing but it and Sin Disease by Scaterd Few, a hardcore Christian punk/reggae/skater band, over and over and over. I was addicted, and I think the contrast between the discs really reflected the post-highschool angst induced schizotypal personality I had back then!
I am envious of those of you all who were able to see the other US series made based off of the works of Leiji Matsumoto Captain Harlock and the Queen of 1,000 Years. I think that was the last anime show Harmony Gold ever did before living off the cash cow that Robotech eventaully became. It never aired in my market.

Am I the only one who went out and saw this movie? Did the critics manage to scare everybody else away?
Well, if you haven't gone to see Speed Racer, get off your rear ends and go. This movie mops the floor with Iron Man, and I thought Iron Man was one of the best super-hero movies ever.
As if I needed any more indication that I should never trust film critics, those brain-dead schmucks totally missed the boat on this one.
I never watched Speed Racer as a kid, not quite sure how I missed it. But the kitschy flavor of the show has seeped into my brain through pop culture references and snippets, so I knew going into it that it ought to be over the top, goofy, melodramatic and so on, and I knew that there was going to be a mysterious Racer X, and a number of other elements.
SPOILERS!!!
What I didn't know was that the Wachowski brothers could tell us the life story of an entire family through nonstop action sequences in the space of about the first fifteen or twenty minutes. We get to see Speed as a kid, we get to see him grow up, we get to see the excitement and tragedy and mystery of his older brother's entire racing career, we get to see how Speed met Trixie ... and good lord I don't know how much else, and all of it is intercut with the most amazing race imagery I've ever seen.
//END SPOILERS
I spent the whole of the first fifteen minutes thinking, "Oh my god, this is the most amazing film I've ever seen. What on earth could go wrong in the next two hours that could make anyone walk out of this theater without loving it?" (I had seen the dismal 35% rating on Rottentomatoes.com's tomatometer, so I knew the critics had hated it.)
The answer? Nothing at all goes wrong. The movie just gets better and better.
Is it ridiculous? Yes. Is it predictable? Yes. Is it campy and totally unbelievable? Absolutely.
It's also about the most exciting film I've ever seen, start-to-finish. It's got phenomenal performances by a brilliant cast. It's got an eye-popping visual style and the cinematic storytelling is mind-boggling. And it's got more heart than any s.f./super-hero/cartoon genre movie I've seen in ages.
The Spider-Man movies have largely been filmed as traditional dramas, and these same critics ate them up. Now the Wachowski brothers come along and do something utterly original while also totally true to the feel of the source material (at least, the way the source material has percolated into the popular culture and thereby into my head), and the critics complain that it's "bewildering" and "headache-inducing."
Everybody, prove them wrong and go see this movie.
It's awesome.

I must say that I totally disagree with you completely! The movie looked amazing, but the fact of the horrendous writing, and bad acting complied with the fact that is is only for die hard fans of the series, and kids with long attention spans!
The whole storyline is a mess and it is simply a battle between good and evil. I don't want to give anything away,so I will keep my mouth relatively shut, but they seemed to have aimed the whole movie toward kids, instead of the people that really matter, unlike Iron Man did, bring the old suit back and telling some back story.None of the plot seems to matter, and that is a total drawback in my eyes. I just don't think that you are in the right by calling the movie awesome!
Now to anyone that thinks I'm don't know what I'm talking about,or plan to argue with me you should know this,I plan on becoming a movie critic, and see a movie once a week. I can tell what a good movie is,and I must say if you want to argue, I will for days about how horrible the movie was.
Only diehard fans should like it in the least bit, which leads me to believe that you were a diehard fan of the cartoon!

Okay, Shades, I respect the fact that you want to be a movie critic, and I suppose that if you want to be a movie critic, you sort of have to believe that your opinion is the "right" one and others are simply underinformed about the appropriate way to watch a movie.
BUT
Please don't call me a liar. My post very clearly stated that I never watched the cartoon, and that's the simple truth. At most, I may have seen a scene here or there in documentaries or TV specials about cartoons.
I loved Iron Man too -- but I had to turn a part of my brain off to watch it, because it's dumb, unbelievable super-hero nonsense. It was great that they kept Iron Man's basic origin, with the ridiculous, impossible notion of this guy having shrapnel imbedded in his heart that was kept from killing him by an electromagnet. But come on -- the whole notion is laughable on its face.
Iron Man succeeded as a film despite being based on a silly comic book. Speed Racer succeeds as a film because it is a silly cartoon.
The reason Speed Racer is awesome is not because it has awesome movie dialogue, but because it has awesome cartoon dialogue. It doesn't have awesome dramatic film performances, but it does have awesome cartoon performances. This wasn't like the Star Wars prequels where the actors got flimsy direction and delivered inconsistent performances. These are top-notch actors who were using every bit of their talent and training to turn a cartoon reality into something approximating our reality.
I can see why, if you went in expecting some kind of traditional dramatic film storytelling with traditional dramatic film acting, you might think this wasn't a great movie. In that case, though, you also should not ever go to see a musical, or an opera, or a ballet.
This is a cartoon, and if you don't like cartoons, then no, you're probably not going to like this either.
One final word - if you're really too cynical to want to believe in a world where good versus evil is all that matters, then I guess being a movie critic is probably the right thing for you to aspire to.

I really respect your opinions because of how you write your post, props to that. I really wasn't calling you a liar,it was just I thought the fact that you thought the movie was great was what I'm confused about. I had people walking out of the theater in the last 30 minutes, because the movie was so slow ,but almost none of that was characterization build up! If your sitting in a movie for 2 hours, I think you should at least get to know the characters more than little tidbits of info here and there. I think this falls into the bad catagory for me. I respect that others don't think my opinion is right, I just think the movie was just bad.

Thanks, Shades. One of the things that you probably want to look at, if you're really interested in being a movie critic, is keeping your criticisms closely focused on the movie itself. Any judgment about the viewers should be positive or very generalized. It's valuable to readers if you say, "Die-hard fans of the cartoon may eat this up, but most others will find it indigestible." (As opposed to saying, "Only die-hard fans of the cartoon could possibly like this movie.") This leaves some wiggle room for readers who are not die-hard fans of the cartoon but who did like the movie. If you make a statement that they know to be factually untrue (I loved the movie, and I'm not a die-hard fan), then it undercuts their confidence in your opinion, and as a critic your opinion is what you've got to sell.
I'm interested to see what some of your specific complaints are, once a larger number of posters have had a chance to see the flick.

As far as Robotech goes, well, the only good way to do it justice in live action it to do it as a mini series on Sci-fi with the BG writers.

The pickiest person I know told me he enjoyed Speed Racer more than he enjoyed Iron Man (and he thought IM was really good). I liked Iron Man a lot, but Speed Racer is far more daring and inventive.
Unless you're really budget-strapped, you should absolutely go see this in the theater. If you end up liking it, you'll kick yourself if you missed the big-screen version. If you end up not liking it much, at least on the big screen you'll get the raw sensory explosion that the movie provides, whereas on the small screen you won't even get that. (Unless you've got some really kick-butt home theater system.)
Bad advance word and critics without a clue have hamstrung this movie's success. But if you let those keep you away, you'll be enabling a real crime: the box office destruction of a great piece of filmmaking by the small minds of those in the media.

Let me put this another way. Which of the following possibilities is worse?
1) Spending 7 bucks on a matinee showing of Speed Racer, expecting it to be bad, and finding out you're right, OR
2) Spending 4 bucks on renting the DVD and finding out it's terrific and you'll never have another chance to see it on the big screen?
Next, which of the following possibilities is better?
1) Spending 4 bucks on renting the DVD and finding out that you wasted your 4 bucks, OR
2) Spending 7 bucks to go to the theater and finding out that it was more than worth it?
Maybe I just make too darn much money, since I think there's not that much difference between 4 bucks and 7 bucks. But I'd pick the second possibility as my answer to both questions.

That was FREAKING AWESOME! What an exhilirating ride. It was so comic perfect that I am dumbfounded by the critics ratings. Did they expect to see Spidey? Bats? Tony? There was no deep, dark belly-button pondering here, nor should there have been. Speed Racer is an absolutely wild ride that thoroughly explores what can be done in a live-action comic movie.
I was by turns laughing uproariously and pumping my fist in glory at some of the tremendous Car Wars style driving. The villains were superb, the setting stupendous, the storytelling sublime.
Go, go, go to see this in the theater! If you let this movie capture your imagination it will carry you in a rush to it's well-deserved climax, leaving you feeling like you just got off a roller coaster.

My pleasure, Aldin. I'm hoping that positive word of mouth will actually boost this movie's second weekend take higher than the first, though I doubt that's a realistic hope. It sure would be nice to see it flummox all the critics and beat out "Prince Caspian." (I found the first "Chronicles of Narnia" pretty annoying.)

^ What this guy said.
I just got back with my family - what an excellent movie!
LOOOOVED this film the whole way through.
I was almost emotional seeing my childhood favorite on the big screen in scrumptious colors and CGI and having my wife and two oldest children with me.
When it began, my son was going crazy pumping his fists with excitement. He's grown up watching dad's Racer DVDs. He and his school-aged buddies have worked themselves into a frenzy with all their talk. Truly a fun sight to see him going nutso for Speed.
Yes, people need to see this in theater. I'm glad I didn't wait for the DVD release.

My speculation about the ending and the hints that if the movie had performed better, it might've had a possible sequel:
At the end, the old guy and young girl who present Speed with the winning trophy are dead ringers for two characters from the cartoon. The character names are lost to me, but I'll look them up when I have a chance.
I'm sure the old man was a villain and his daughter aided Speed in some way.
It was just too odd to see some old guy presenting a trophy in that scene. Definitely had some inkling of a sequal, IMO

I went to IMDB to see how people were rating SR. It had a 6.6 out of 10 stars. But when I started scrolling through the reviews, I was surprised how many 8, 9, and 10 ratings there were. It didn't quite look right to me, mathematically.
So I put the 169 reviews (at that time) into a spreadsheet and found something interesting.
If you give a review, but don't select a rating, IMDB counts you as giving the movie zero stars. There were nine reviews that said they really liked the film but had no star rating, and one review that said it was okay with no star rating. When these reviews were put in the spreadsheet as 0, the average came out to 6.6. When they were left off entirely, the average was 7.0.
And since I had all the numbers entered, I also checked out the median rating. (That's the rating at which exactly half the reviewers were at or above and half at or below.)
That came out to an 8.
Ordinary people apparently really like this movie, except for a small number (on the order of 15 to 20%) who absolutely hate it. The average person who liked the movie (6+ stars) gave in 8.4 stars, while the average person who disliked it (5- stars) gave it 2.6.
So go see this movie!!!

I will say one negative about seeing this with my kids:
The torture sequence in Crusher Block's mobile fortress was unnecessary.
My two children were horrified seeing blood and the piece of bloody meat unwrapped and offered to the piranha.
Felt I had failed to provide my children with a sense of safety and comfort in allowing them to witness that scene. :-|

I wouldn't say the average imdb user who writes a review for a movie would qualify as ordinary people. It's just too small a sample. I would venture to guess that the ones who posted there are the target demographic more so than the average moviegoer. The numbers are really interesting. It looks like the distribution is pretty even on the didn't like side, but the distribution is leaning to the high end on the liked it side. I'll have to see it and see where I fit in. It doesn't really excite me, so I wouldn't be the drooling fanboy, but I wouldn't be the jaded skeptic either. I can see it being like Pirates of the Caribbean. The trailers did absolutely nothing for me, but I loved it when I went after hearing enough people I trust that liked it.

Ok, so I got an exceedingly rare free pass from the boss to go watch this last night by myself since she had no interest at all and Top Chef was on. So I get to the theater 5 minutes late at 9:45 and plop on my seat. There was a family of three stiing nehind me and an off-duty employee sitting near them. I sat almost all the way to the front since they were showing it on a smaller screen. I rarely do this since it gets me dizzy, but I really wanted to absorb the film in all its grandious glory. Otherwise I might as well wait for it to come out on DVD and watch it on my pj.
Anyway, so I'm sitting down thinking I was lucky the film hadn't started yet. So, I put on my mp3 player and start listening to some tunes. I kind of lost track of time and by the time I looked at my watch 30 minutes had gone by and no movie. So I stand up go to the manager since no one else seemed to notice. He says he'll check, comes back 5 minutes later saying there's a problem with the projector and asks us if we want to move over to watch Iron Man instead with a comped meal (it's a restaurant cinema). Of course we all say no and he leaves once again. Comes back and begins to tell us that there had been a mistake and they were supposed to be showing Indiana Jones on their big screen and Iron Man where we were seated, which is totally bogus since Indy comes out today. So, I tell him screw it I'm leaving, gimme a refund and comp me a drink. So I got a free frozen drink and an extra dollar back, though a free pass for another time would have been better.
So, there, I went to see it, blew a free pass from the boss and all I got was a frozen drink and a dollar.

Peter Travers of Rolling Stone called this a film for "stoners" and suggested it would be best watched while high. This reminded me of Mike Medved's comments that most movie critics are users. Even as I read his review, I was unable to take stock in it for this very reason; it was a fact he reminded me of within the review itself. That he was writing this in a magazine called "Rolling Stone" was a fact for which the irony was only magnified.
Still, I've been afraid of this movie since the first reviews came out. Not because I weigh the critics' opinions so heavily, but because the things they singled out were all things I HATE in movies: thin characters, thin plot, excessive action and excessive use of visual effects.
I liked the pod race in Star Wars episode 1, but would I have if it had been 2 hours long? No. In fact, I wouldn't even like watching the original Speed Racer anime for 2 + hours. So...I'm on the fence.

To just about anyone who understands the difference between a cartoon character and a serious dramatic character, the people onscreen in Speed Racer are fantastic characters.

Hey, that's my pic thing!
I saw this movie a while back, and I loved it. It's the best movie I've seen so far this year (except maybe no country for old men, but that was on DVD)! I'm only 16, and I loved it, but then again I watched it growing up too, probably the same way all of you guys' kids do. My mom and her brother both liked it as kids. My mom bought me some of the vhs when i was little, and just for my 14'th or 15'th birtday, my uncle bought me the first two seasons on DVD. I really really liked the show growing up. I would probably just say if you liked the cartoon go see it, if not, meh... you may or may not like it. BUT, one thing, I went into the theatre with very low expectations, I thought it would be goofy (which it was), but try to be serious (which it really didn't. They had a few "serious" scens, but they were done well) I hate when movies do that, like Tranformers, it was all to serious for me, I hated that movie. Speed Racer enbraced its inner goofiness, which made it excelent.
Hey, maybe just go in with low expecations! That always works for me :D

HOw can anyone think this was the worst of the year is beyond my understanding. I can accept not liking it, not being your cup of tea or whatever...but saying it's the worst? C'mon!
ON the other hand, Time ranked it 9th in their best films list. Now there's a smart critic.

I would put this movie on my 10 ten worse movies that I saw list, but I didn't see very many movies. :)
If I was a movie critic that saw every movie I am sure I could find 10 others* that I disliked more.
*Didn't they release like 10 Saw movies this year? I am sure those would make my list.

I'm with Hahma....it wasn't a "great" film, but it was a good, light, eyepopping experience with just enough goofiness to make it a little more fun. I rented it, I didn't buy it, but if I had bought it, it would likely become an audio/video demo disk.
I liked Iron Man, but I don't see all the fawning over it. Iron Man's not one of my favorite characters to begin with, so that might have something to do with it.

He's not my favorite either, but I loved the movie. I seem to like super hero movies when the hero isn't bitten or falls into a vat of toxic waste. Iron Man was made. Thats why I liked Iron Man, and Batman.

That's a good point...Iron Man and Batman both made a conscious decision to become a force for good, whereas many others sort of "luck" into it. That can make a good movie as well (how does someone handle this power thrust upon them), but there's definitely a different tone between the types of origins.
