Bring at least 2 premade 520 point armies per player.
for food i suggest we have pizza delivered at around 1:30 and everyone chip in about $7. i can supply drinks and a few snacks. but if you have a favorite snack then you might want to bring it yourself.

Count me in. I will be there for sure. Let me know if you need me to brig anything, or if you need help building maps and/or scenarios.
GaryLASQ
August 10th, 2006, 01:08 PM
good deal. once we get a better head count we can start thinking about maps. let me know about other people (players or non-players) that may be coming with anyone.
i'll be bringing my son again and possibly two others.

Arrghhhgh!
Sundays aren't going to work for me anymore.
Gary, are you going to go down a day early again?
GaryLASQ
August 13th, 2006, 11:23 PM
yes. i'll be there sometime on Sat. and that could work out perfect since josh-n-papa is able to make Sunday. one of those HMG castles sets is earmarked for him, so hopefully you'll have it by then.
and if you have some time, we could do a quick 1-on-1. i want a rematch! :)

Sandra posted somewhere last night about getting Thora this weekend, Castles next. :?
We'll see.
Just got off the phone w/nwo, he said he'd set up a big map with his winnings when they arrive. So keep that in mind.

GaryLASQ
August 18th, 2006, 08:09 PM
i'm willing to go south an hour or two if someone down there wants to host...
i'm sure everyone will have castles by then thou.
I'm not so sure about that now.*sigh* HMG's not getting any Hasbro love on castles for a couple more weeks it seems. i am still on the hunt for 3 more sets than what's on my combo order with you Joah. and the local Walmart has an empty shelf spot for 'em just a waitin' to be filled...wait, wait, wait. *groan*

Are you all good with map tiles for Sunday Gary? Do you need my help with anything?
GaryLASQ
August 18th, 2006, 11:25 PM
based on the current head count i should be ok. i'll probably take the map i made for the last time we met but work in some Tundra this time.
i need to PM a couple others that showed interest on the N.IL/S.WI thread to see if we can get a larger group. if so, then we'll probably need to break into two groups again and i will need you to bring terrain.
anyone attending score a castle set or two?
i might have some soon. a Walmart near me has the spot on the shelf marked for the new stuff but hasn't stocked them yet. hopefully this weekend they will have it.
i'm also on the call waiting list with Gamer's Paradise.

August 19th, 2006, 12:24 AM
I got one so far that I got from Teamski in trade.
I'm really starting to look forward to this game.Josh is still making changes to his army, but I got mine.
I am kind of a robot nut, so I was pretty elated when the blastatrons appeared. Finally! soulborgs that have a chance of kicking butt!
So,yeah! I'm coming with 2 blastarons,2 gladiatrons,DW9000(maybe),and a squad of marro hounds! I don't care if saying this gives you guys the chance to counterdraft(it's not like losing would be a NEW experience for me  )
GaryLASQ

crap. Joah played the 2 Gladiatrons and 2 Blastatrons against me at GC. i learned the hard way how much damage they can do. :)

Hey Gary
How many points were going to this time 520? or 560?
GaryLASQ
August 19th, 2006, 01:17 PM
i went with 520 again (first post) but if you want to bring a few extra figures that's fine in case others bring extras and agree to a larger army. just be prepared for 520.
langfordrocks is also planning to attend. if nwojedi and my brother can make it that means we will have the same size crowd (or more) we had last time.
so djsmith, bring some terrain again please. it will probably be the same setup as last time. one map on the pingpong table downstairs and one on the dining room table upstairs.
i'll try to have my map/scenario finished by Tue night (Walmart put out those castle sets this weekend )
the 3 house rules i like to use are:
1) initiative determined by highest to lowest d20 roll, rather than highest goes first and play passes to the left.
2) X order marker is a wildcard, instead of a bluff. still a 3 turn round where X can be substituted for 1, 2 or 3 at the appropriate time. Dund's Crippling Gaze removes the X no matter what Army Card it is on.
3) doublespaced figures can be flipped (180 degree turn on same two spaces if it fits) freely during movement and/or attack phase. i like to treat flipping of doublespaced figures as if the figure is being "adjusted", rather than moved (see rulebook about adjusting your figures during your turn).

I will bring my stuff, I have a great idea for a multi-player game I want to build. What is the size of the ping-pong table again?
Is it possible for us to draw names to decide who plays on what table first? Just a thought.
josh-n-papa
August 20th, 2006, 12:56 AM
Does anyone who is going to be there sunday need some custom bases?
I still have a ziplock bag of bases from when I was testing the base molds. There are about a dozen large two space bases and a dozen or so of the large and small single space bases.Totally free, you just have to do some light sanding, then paint them and put on one of Malechi's base stickers.

Good to see your coming, yes mixture is allowed, bring multiple pre-made armys so you can pick what army you playing for the board you see, that way you won't have to carry all you armys unless you want to. :D also Gary & djsmith are good at posting what the maps will look like when they get them ready in the next few days.

Well I sure hope you can make it Joah.
I am looking forward to playing with everyone on Sunday. My wife said she is coming too, but you know how women change their minds a lot!
I just wanted to ask again: Since we will have more than one table set-up, how does everyone feel about drawing names to see who plays at which table?
I think would mix things up nicely.
GaryLASQ
August 21st, 2006, 02:26 AM
randomly assigning who plays on which map sounds good. although as Joah pointed out, if he can make it and gets there early he'll play on the first map that is ready.
i plan to get there the night before again so the map on the dining room table should be ready way ahead of time. but still we could wait until both maps are ready and then start playing all at once.
should we do team play again? if so, certain players may want to be on the same team and pick their premade armies accordingly. (josh-n-papa, jdtenor and i plan to bring other players who could be potential teamates.)
and if not team play i'll need to rethink startzones for whatever map i put together...

I've had to re-think my earlier army post.Josh and I did a game tonight and he took out my Gladiatrons fairly quickly.
They did hold up pretty well as a defensive line against his Deathstalkers but they went down pretty quickly against his Guilty Mccreach and 4th Mass.
In my own defense I was charging uphill,so that did not help my chances any.
AWWW! Shucks! I might as well face it...I suck at this game.So if anybody coming to this game is looking for a challenge you will be better off playing against the 8 year olds(not sure how old Spencer is).If you are looking to win...you can beat up on me,I'm used to it.
Although sometimes I wonder if I am really that bad or he is really that good?I noticed that at the last big game we went to,it seems to me Josh and Spencer were pretty much the last ones standing in that big team game we had.It wasn't like either one held back and hid out till the end either.Spencer was fighting for control of the bridge and Josh was giving Val(sniper lady) a run for her money.Me, I was in the middle getting massacred by Gary's vipers.
By the way, whatever happened to Sydecomeback?I have not seen him post in quite awhile. It would be a shame if he did not even know Hasbro is going to release official standard-bearers.

I am cool with whatever is decided as far as teams go. If my wife actually goes, then I would team up with her obviously, but it doesnt matter to me as far as teams go. I know how people love to have a team strategy going, so why mess that up.
I will be there by 10:30, and will have jdtenor's help to set-up (Thank you jdtenor) so we should be ready to go by noon or before.
As far a the maps go. I finished building and mapping 1/2 of my 2-map portal battlefield, and will finish the other half tonight. Hopefully, I should have the maps up for everyones review by tomorrow night.

It looks like you need to use some of my strategy, take Spencer as your teamate with his rolling you won't lose.

Everyone should be able to keep the teams they want. Maybe have each "team" draw for which map and who they play against?
GaryLASQ

What is the size of the ping-pong table again?5'x9'
By the way, whatever happened to Sydecomeback? I have not seen him post in quite awhile. It would be a shame if he did not even know Hasbro is going to release official standard-bearers.that's a darn good question. i see him on AIM from time to time but with BRB on. i have seen him logged into this forum briefly once or twice since GC so i think he knows about the guys carrying the flags. i know he's got the big move to PA coming up. i forget exactly when that's happening...
Everyone should be able to keep the teams they want. Maybe have each "team" draw for which map and who they play against?i'm hoping to have my map and scenario done for display tomorrow night. i'm thinking about letting the scenario bend the rules regarding "figures you control" to equal "friendly figures" on most SPs. and also list possible themes for each side of the map. that way you don't get two teams both with just Orcs going at each other. although an Orc civil war might be interesting...:)
so if players know what map/scenario/side they will play on they will bring certain figures that they may not want to play on random terrain. all this of course hinges on my scenario being done in time. it won't be complicated at all but will take a little bit of time to think through and type up.
plus i'm working in Tundra. at this point i think it's too late for me to work in Castle peices even if i do score some today or tomorrow. i'm a bit of a perfectionist with making maps/scenarios and don't like to slap them together at the last second...
----------
i'll edit the first post soon with a better list of players since some of us are bringing others that don't post here and aren't on the "registration" list of this event thread.

I do not have a preference regarding how we split up. I currently have 7 very different 520 pt armies pre-set and I could quickly put together an army that would compliment a teammates pre-chosen one. I am just looking forward for the oppurtunity to play.
GaryLASQ
August 21st, 2006, 11:14 PM
which is a good idea. in fact the last time we got together i think i asked everyone to bring two different 520 point armies. some brought more than that.
checked some stores today. no castles yet but did pick up some wave 5 commons to compliment the full set still coming in the mail.
i'll PM everyone with directions to the location in a couple of days.

August 22nd, 2006, 09:10 AM
I just wanted to touch base with everyone regarding the maps I will be posting for this weekend. Something important came up last night, so I will be delayed 1 day in getting the 2 maps up on here for viewing. In the meantime, I wanted to give everyone the basic scenario I have planned. Any comments for tweaking are always appreciated.
This is my first attempt at a "portals" scenario:
sets used: 7 master sets, 2 lava, 1 tundra (plus custom snow), 3 RTTFF's, many expansion tiles..
Each team will start on seperate maps, starting zones are clearly designated.
Map 1: Lava and rock ruin area, 3 elevated areas (10th. level or higher)
Map 2: Snow, grass lands, rivers, lake, lots of trees, mostly flat, some elevation.
There are 2 portals on each map. Each portal will randomly take whoever is adjacent to the portal to another RANDOM portal. (4 total) Most likely on a roll of the D20. (1-5 goes to portal one; 6-10 goes to portal 2, etc..)
The goal is the basic capture the enemy artifact near their home base and return to your lands and your own hom base.
Other details that may arise have not been ironed out yet, but will be by game day.
Last note: With the exception of the castle sets, everything is here so a versatile army will be critical for this scenario. I hope that helps! Please let me know if you guys have any thoughts.
Oh yeah, I forgot, My wife designed one map and I did the other so if your going to rip any maps apart after you see them, rip mine apart or she will never help me again. :D just kidding

Well I haven't spoken to Gary on this really yet, so I can't say.
With M's new schedule, I didn't think I was going to be able to make it at all.
Then, I saw when everyone was planning on getting to Rockton.
A gaming window opened. A little bit anyway.
So if you guys are going to be there that early I'll plan on showing up then too. Help set up/ play, whatever.

no reason in particular. honest. i just like 520. 400, 500 or 600 are boring. :)
i was 100% RL today. so tomorrow i'll post the map i'll be building on the dining room table.
still no freaking castle :frustrated: the Walmart near me thinks it will arrive Friday. they've had a spot on the shelves for it for 2 weeks now. if i do get a set or two just before the event i may not be able to resist starting from scatch at the last second.
speaking of portals, ever since Pilgrim did that massive game with Heroscape Throw Down rules i've been thinking how cool it would be to have several small maps scattered about the house where players can jump between maps using portals and his rules, but separate maps rather than using one giant connected map like he did. maybe next time.
it will be fun to try out your portal idea DJ. hopefully most players will have time to play more than one game...

i've update the first post with the list of players. a few are tentative so i'm estimating between 8 and 12 players.
PMing the driving directions to everyone in a few minutes.
as for my map, just follow this link for pics i took last time we got together and imagine what it will look like with Tundra on the end opposite of the Lava end.
http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?p=17747#20042
and as for a scenario, i'm still undecided.
if we only get 8 players and decide to all play on djsmith's setup then that's cool. we can use mine as the "overflow" map.
as for teams it sounds like we should just pair up. some of us are bringing another player with us. if there is synergy between the two players' armies then good, if not oh well.
edit: here's the ZIP of the PDF and SOL for viewing in SolidScape if you want a closer look - minus the Tundra.

looks like i'll be there for sure...are we drafting or bring premade stuff?
GaryLASQ
August 24th, 2006, 02:15 PM
excellent Nwojedi !
some real competition...
i'd like to stick with premade 520 point armies. (btw, did you know that Gladiatrons x3, Blastatrons x3 and Major X17 is exactly 520 points? ;) )
if you want to bring 2 or 3 different 520 point armies that's fine. in fact i recommend bringing at least 2 520p armies. (edited first post). then as a game takes shape the players can decide if they want to bump up the point amount (and let some borrow from others if needed).
drafting will add more time and would require 3 or so players to bring their whole collection and share. (haven't decided if i'm brining my whole collection - i don't live at this location.) i'm hoping everyone (except maybe Joah) can squeeze in 2 games and have a chance to play against different players in a second game.
games start at noon-ish. it looks like we will have no problem getting 6 players into two different games going on at the same time. 6 players is about the max anyhow otherwise there is too much downtime for each player.

for food i suggest we have pizza delivered at around 1:30 and everyone chip in about $7. i can supply drinks and a few snacks. but if you have a favorite snack then you might want to bring it yourself.
give me some pop/beer suggestions please...
there's a local pizza place down the road called Sam's and a Pizza Hut not far away. does that sound ok ?

i knew it. i knew it. i knew i would find castle sets the day before game day. three sets!! snatched 'em up. (Joah, we need to talk...)
so guys, here's the question...should i build a hefty 3-castle-set map before y'all arrive? (do i have to ask? ;) )
this will make everyone who plays on this map rethink their premade armies. djsmith's map has lots of elevation so armies selected for playing on this map should be fairly compatible for a castle map.
you guys ok with a big honking neutral castle in the middle of a map? nobody will have a startzone in it naturally since we are all doing the same point value army.
i'm bringing my Hounds so i can Plague that door! :)

All I have to say is "If you build it, they will come."good one. :)
so instead of a ball park, i should build the Colosseum?
seriously though i have some concerns. one is time. i love building battlefields. it's my favorite part of HS. but i'll be the first to admit i stink under pressure. i could easily spend 8 hours or more working on a large map for six players with all the bells and whistles. and i prefer maps that have been tested and adjusted a few times not somthing that's been slapped together.
most everyone is driving over and hour and i don't want a bad experience over a map that hasn't been tried yet. the map i was going to use has been played on 3 times by 4 players (2 teams of 2) and adjusted a bit as a result. and the starting zones and glyphs are well thought out. adding 1 set of Tundra would have been "mostly harmless".
welp, the van is packed. bringing the whole collection. time to bag the laptop (that didn't come out sounding right) and go dark for a couple of hours. see you on the other side...

Hey everyone, I spoke, with Gary. He IS planning on incorpporating a couple Castle sets into his map.
So, if you need to rethink your armies, you've got a little time.
Sounds like there will be a couple other Castles around too, as I'm sure most of us are going to want to try them out. I've had two since Wednesday, and have yet to get one built.

ok, on site. just getting started putting tiles together. i will build the map i had planned. (links to the pics and downloads for it are on page 6 of this thread.) i'll try to incorporate at least one Tundra set and one Castle set; maybe two of each at most but i don't want the map to get too crowded. i want to make sure there is enough elbow room for good sized armies of cannon fodder for six players.

It was really nice to meet everyone in person.
Thanks for hosting, Gary.
Great fun. I had a blast[atron].
Here are some pics I took near the beginning of the upstairs game (3 v 3),
with some commentary on highlights.
Left third of the board. Sorry the top of the castle got cut off in the pic.
http://math.lfc.edu/~yuen/heroscape/image/img004.jpg
Middle third of the board. You can see that Gary and I both decided to play Vydar Soulbourg armies. Homing devices galore. You can also see Nilfheim coming in. Nilfheim put the big hurt on our team early. Well, Nilfheim summoned our Q9 and the 4th mass killed it in two turns before Q9 got a shot off. And a heavily wounded Nilfheim was summoned back to safety and healed.
http://math.lfc.edu/~yuen/heroscape/image/img005.jpg
The right third of the board. The rats ended up controlling the bottom right two glyphs til near the end of the game. You can see another Q9 at the top right.
http://math.lfc.edu/~yuen/heroscape/image/img006.jpg
Another highlight was when a lowly rat killed the EOV that had DW9K engaged, freeing DW9K to explosion attack a group of 3 blastatrons and 1 gladiatron, killing them all with one shot.
A pivotal point in the game came when Nilfheim and Q9 were both killed by Blastatrons in the same activation. (Someone rolled 4 skulls out of 4, twice. And Q9 rolled zero shields. Ouch.)

just a note thou. there were 3 rats on the EOV. the first two whiffed and the 3rd hit, with his big 1 die. Boo yea. Take that spence!! :) Show you to kill my AE.
