Hey Fyre! There was a tournament in Austin, MN in March. Jormi is on here, I think. He ran the tournament. I think there are quite a few people over there. I got second there because of win/loss, but first by far points-wise. :D

I think there will be another tournament in Austin is a few weeks ( June ? ). I think Jormi has most of the details work out. Last March there were 16 people at the tourney

I assume Jormi will post a thread for that soon? The last tournament went really well, IMO. I never got to play you, though.

Where do you guys normaly play? Im in Fremont, NE and have a few friends that play about once a week. If you guys are up to it, maybe we can get something going sometime? If driving isnt your thing...like me...maybe we can find someplace in the middle to meet up.
Let me know

I just checked out how far it is from Fremont to Atlantic, Ia and from Ames to Atlantic and it's about 1 hr. 50 min. for each of us. I don't know about driving that far for just a game but if we could find more people in the area I would be willing for a tournament.

I actualy started a thread/topic about a "regional" tournament. I would love to get a ton of people to meet in a 'midpoint city' to play a tourney. If people are willing to drive a couple of hours, up to 3 would be alright for me; we could get one hell of a tournament going.

Oh yeah, I'm still here. My biggest problem is that I have only 1 friend who plays and I doubt that he would be willing to road trip for a game. He wasn't even interested in going to the Austin, Mn tourney last Sat. but then again, he's kind of a drunk.
I did take my traveling master set to the local comic/game store for boardgame night and talked to one of the guys from the I.S.U. wargaming association and I will be attending one of their meetings for rercruiting purposes. So, hopefully soon I will have many more people that may be interested!
Also, I know Jormi_Boced and Codeman are going to be having another tourney in Forest City in Sept./Oct. or something and if you would like to meet me somewhere, you could ride up with me.
Let me know what you are thinking about and we'll try to work something out.

Damn, F.C. is still about 5 hours away...If we were able to make to your place...I think it was only about 2 hours away, that would be do-able for sure. But the F.C. might be a bit too far...but who knows...its a couple months away. And we could do the car-pool thing. I got a Grand Caravan that can seat my friends and a couple of yours if we choose that route.

I was a litttle wrong on my guess of 2 hours. Im 3 hours. Doesnt really seem like much, but we'll see. If it is pretty big, then a 3-4 hour trip would be worth it.

As far as that goes, are we able to get an approx. head count? This way if we need more sets/maps, I could bring my stuff to make a multiple map tournament. This would prevent us from hitting a "I didnt get to play, and I've got to go already" type of night.

Codeman
July 4th, 2006, 09:26 AM
Deliverymanxas the format is multiple maps so you and everyone at the tournement plays every round. There would not be a need to bring your terrain as the maps are hopefully set up by the time you get here. All you will need is your dice, turn & wound markers and then whatever army & cards you will be playing for the day. Even if we have an odd number show up we have some people that know how to play and will fill in so there isn’t a bye. So far each round has had a time limit of one hour. I would expect that to remain the same or go a little lower ( 50 minutes?) At this point we’ve played armies between 400, 450, 500 points. 400 is a little short for one-hour play. 500 is about the limit on the high side, I think we will be playing something in the 475 point range next time.

Jormi_Boced does an excellent job of running these torments. Every round the undefeated play each other until there is one undefeated left ( in tournaments of 14-18 people it has taken 4 or 5 rounds ). Everyone else is paired with similar records and they also do battle to get a somewhat true first thru last place standing, and prizes are distributed in that manner first to last. This coming tourney as well as the second one we had... everyone got a HS tourney t-shirt ( Worth the $5 entry fee right there) The best part I believe everyone has fun.

I would expect this torment to be at least 18 strong however I do feel good that the numbers will get a little bigger as people like you come and see what it is all about. I am looking at getting a good size room at a local pizza place. It can easily handle 12 maps (24 entrants) with lots of table space and room left over. Anyway if you have any questions feel free to ask and I’m sure SuperGeek wouldn’t mind answering any questions either, as he is a veteran of a three tournaments we have had.

I don't know what the deal is but it's a buyers market for sure. My brother lives in Nevada and has been trying to sell his house for a year.
Edit: Last night I realized that the students are gone and many of those signs could have been for rent.
Drumline3469, are you from Nevada? Feel free to PM me the next time you are in the neighborhood if you feel like a game, you wouldn't need to bring a thing.

My gma lives there and my other lives in Ames so I'm there often I'm there in August maybe helping my gma move out. But yeah houses don't sell worth **** in Nevada. People only want the ones that are brand new and being built on the outskirts. I'll PM you when I know for sure about my next visit. I'm from Wichita, KS along with Roxas.

Do you guys have an exact date and time planned yet? This way I can start planning with my friends and most important, my wife. I think somebody said sometime in Sept./Oct.?

What is the entry going to be? Prizes? Are the games going to be 1 on 1, or teams?

Some of these may have already been answered, if so I apologize.

Check out the seventh entery on page 2 .....I answered most of these the best I could as details aren't completed yet.

I'm sure it will be October, I was going to poll everyone on which 3 Saturdays would work.

-Entry fee will stay at $5

-1 on 1 although Jormi_Boced said he may do a team event in Austin

- Prizes I was hoping to find some at Gen-Con, haven't contacted any sponsers yet. I am planing on T-shirts for all entrants.

Watch the " Event Tread " for details - I'll probably post under " Tree Town Classic - Iowa/Minnesota

But Ill keep my eyes open in this thread and in the events thread.

I may have more questions as time progresses though. Hopefully, since this is my first attempt at getting to a tourney, you are patient with me.

Thanks

Deliverymanxas, No problem … ask any questions you may have. My only issue was everything is in flux right now and I don’t have any definitive answers for some of the questions. I appolige if I came across as abrupt, I do have patients (unless my children haven’t used it all up)

Most likely we would target 9:30 – 9:45 for the group to assemble and sign in, pairings would get announced and then the first round could start at 10am. A couple rounds could get played then we could take a break for lunch and trade battlefield stories. Then we would most likely start the 3rd round after lunch and play another round or two after that. Of course the bigger the turnout the more rounds we play. When we get down to one undefeated warrior the score sheets are tallied. First criteria is won/loss record and then tiebreakers are done using total point diferenental accumulated between all your matches. Then everyone goes to the award table in the order of finish and picks out a prize... of course the winner will get to choose from everything. At this point I planing on everyone getting a HS tourney t-shirt.

None of this really matters as we all have a good time just getting together to play HS.

Hope you can make it (when we figure out when it is)

Honestly, I think you can slate us in. I have been telling my wife that there is a tourney coming up. She has been really anxious for me, since this is something that I have been kinda bugging around about lately. She seemed a little...little...wierded about the 5+ hour drive just to play, but then she dismissed it. Kinda cool. That's why I love her...always supportive.

I'd definitely be interested in a tournament or maybe a match or two as my only regular opponents are my two nephews and we've only played twice since I've gotten into the game in late March (though to look at my collection you'd think I played in tournaments every weekend...).

 Year to date? No one.

Madster, we are a little more spread out than you AzHOLEs guys. Most of the guys that have posted here have not played each other at all ( or not very often ). Example I've played deliverymanxas one time ( at a tourney ) and he is from Nebraska not Iowa. gibberish_47 I've played twice and he is from Minnesota and both games were at tournaments. Joah I've played once and that was at Gen-Con and he is from Wisconsin.
I've only played Super Geek ( from Iowa! )only a few times ( mostly at tournys again ). So I we don't have the ranking page like you put up, since we don't see or play each other regularly.

You asked about Spider_Posion the 2006 Gen Con Champ as well as the Mindshakle champ ( He also won-a-wave, but who is counting ) - he just won the Team tournament in Iowa City with his girlfriend or placed second - They were in the championship game against his older and younger brother.... I don't remember who won but it was one or two of those darn Knappers.

Sorry If you want to keep tabs on us you will most likely have to find it in the event site... the next tournament I know is Gen-Con and then Tree Town III in October.

Wow, arent we just the popular group these days...I use 'we' losely...
I would recommend, if you want to know how good we are or how we rank, that you venture up our way one of these days and participate in a tournament.

AND I STILL DO NOT COUNT THAT GAME AGAINST CODEMAN!!!
j/k CM, it was pretty well balanced since you didnt roll for your drop...*sigh*...oh well, next time!!

And now that things are beginning to get back on track, I will start posting and becoming a 'regular' again at tourneys. And YES, I still am in the works for a NE tourney.

A bit farther than I'm looking to drive, but thanks. I'm looking for something more regular (monthly) in the CR area.

I've played Heroscape one time in the past year, at a March tourney in Minnesota. Every time I look over at my giant pile of Heroscape bins, I cringe at the CPP (Cost Per Play) factor.

I, myself, live a little bit farther from you than others. But if you ever feel up to it...our wives could always sit around and do the wife stuff while us geeks sit around and do geek stuff.
I know the drive is a bit farther than Supergeek and spider, but I know that SG comes out on a semi-regular basis, and I used to head out there about the same. This area has a very friendly playgroup that exceeds easily 20 players. Getting us together on a regular gamenight, however, would be close to impossible. Tourneys are about the only way for our group to keep up with each other.

Glad to see another member has joined the Midwest Group, and hope to toss dice with ya in the future.

Thanks for the tips. You yourself are probably pretty close to my parents, who live in NW Iowa (Cherokee, to be specific).

Hey Jpat!
You're in I.C.? Cool. I'm in Wisconsin, but originally from Marion/C.R..

My parents still live in Marion and I have friends in Iowa City I often visit. Maybe during one of my trips back we could get together and play?

Also, shameless plug for the Iowa City Zombie March, which I organize, will be Sept. 18th, 2008. Check out ZombieMarch.org for more details.

All Iowans are welcome to the Topeka Heroscape Tournament, and especially the Lee's Summit, MO tournaments (keep an eye out for them, or check www.kcheroscapers.com)

Osage Tourney on June 21st, if a place can be found. Originally had the library, but they only support 'organizations.' Bowling Alley is the only other place big enough, and they 'remembered' they have a party that weekend for some 5 year old. Lucky me.

Welcome to the site.

If any North Iowans are up for it, I'm gonna be hanging out at the library this weekend, if anyone wants to come play some 'Scape, drop me a PM. Only 1 or 2 people can come though.

So this thread doesn't look very active lately, but it looks like I'm going to be moving to Iowa City this summer for graduate school. Just wondering if there's anybody in or around there who would be up for some 'Scape sometime.

Dangit.
I think ISU would be a better place for graduate school.

Actually ISU is a better school than IU for chemistry, but I didn't get accepted there...so IU it is. But IU pays more, which means more heroscape for me :)

I'd just like to say that he's a very fun and capable Scaping companion. It's also worth mentioning that his collection is vast and includes everything ever produced with multiples of most sets. For some it might be worth traveling from other areas of the state for. Anyways he will be missed here, and if you Iowans don't appreciate him some of us will be upset.

(By the way we need to get some more games in before you go, perhaps after Wave D1 comes out?)

Why don't you come with him, that way he has more friends? ;)

So I can do better in the Wisonsin tournaments when he's gone. Although since he's one of our prominent organizers there might be less tournaments to do better in. Double-edged sword there.

Thanks ElvenEnvy! I don't know if I'd call myself a prominent organizer though...anywho Elffy and Supergeek, I'm sure I'll be seeing you around at tournaments in the area.
