Not sure what that was a reference to, Eclipse? Heath Ledger's unfortunate passing?

No. Go read Astonishing X-Men #24, which was just released today.

Ah, OK, I think I understand now. You really threw me for a loop there.

What? Is Kitty dead? I'm such an off and on comic reader.

***SPOILERS****

That's sort of the expectation at the moment. Kitty hasn't been in a single comic since Messiah Complex started. The current Astonishing X-Men story (which is chronologically finished according to the Marvel timeline, it occurs right before MC starts) has the X-Men in space trying to stop an alien missile from destroying the earth. In the latest issue, Kitty phased into the missile to try and stop it from firing, only to find it's not a missile at all, but a giant hollow point bullet. Too late to stop it, the issue ends with the bullet firing with Kitty still inside.

I'd put down a pretty hefty wager that, all things considering, she phases the entire bullet through the earth and ends up getting shot out into space forever.
