Utgar leaned over the Wellspring, gazing into the past. He could not focus, his mind kept flashing the swarms of his Marro warriors destroyed by the Alliance. Utgar had seen the group of Wizards summoned by Ullar, he smelt change on the wind, he realized that if he did not change his strategy he would lose the war. He placed his hands over the runes of the ancient Wellspring and stared into its waters. He searched through the past for a powerful mage, one powerful and terrible, dreadful to behold. As he searched through the histories of Earth, at last he found his choice and summoned them through the Wellspring…

At first Lord Voldemort was weakened. He arrived at the feet of Utgar destroyed, only a fraction of a soul left in his body. He was bent and crippled. His tattered cloak hung slack against his skeleton body and his skin shone pale and waxy in the moonlight. “Rise”, commanded Utgar. Voldemort lay pitiful and still on the grass before the Wellspring. “Useless”, growled Utgar under his breath as he stepped around Voldemort’s body and back to the Wellspring. The last thing Utgar ever heard was a cold and high voice cry, “Avada Kedavra!”… Voldemort floated over the corpse of Utgar and plunged himself into the waters of the ancient Wellspring. He imbibed its cold waters and felt his soul reforming and growing inside him. The waters began to boil and a pale green light shone from it’s depths as Lord Voldemort emerged from its surface…

All of the generals, one by one, fell before Lord Voldemort’s wand. The Archkyrie’s have hidden deep within the mountains and in their castles in the skies. Voldemort took command of Utgar’s forces. He learned the dark secrets of the magic of Valhalla. Voldemort can now summon from the Wellsprings at will. The new Valhallan war is waged by Wizards and Witches in place of the generals. The lands have been divided and the armies of the generals have been forced to join new sides. Two leaders, the powerful Wizard Lord of the East and the beautiful Witch Queen of the West, are the only ones who will rise against Lord Voldemort. They search the Wellsprings, summoning Wizards and Witches to Valhalla, trying to meet the growing horde of Voldemort’s forces. It is to these two that all of Valhalla looks to destroy Lord Voldemort forever…

Official Rules (Summary Only)

Disclaimer: Here is a brief summary of the rules for Deathly Hallows ‘Scape. It should be understood that this is NOT a game for ‘Scape newbies, a firm understanding of the advanced rules and game mechanics is paramount before learning the Campaign Scenario rules for DH’Scape. This scenario utilizes all of the advanced rules from Classic Heroscape with some new additions. The only modification to the classic rules is regarding glyphs. A GM is required to play this version, though you could easily adapt a game to be played without.

3 Players: Players 1 and 2 act as the Witch Queen and the Wizard Lord. Each brings a pre-made army of 600 points. (100 point limit on squads). At the start of the game there is a truce between players 1 and 2. At any time after one Deathly Hallow Glyph has been discovered the truce may be broken by either player. Player 3 is the GM and acts as Lord Voldemort (Ormus). Player 3 brings a pre-made army of 1200 points including the Lord Voldemort army card. Lord Voldemort does not start on the map, he is immediately summoned once either: Round 7 is reached or 2 Deathly hallows have been discovered. He is automatically placed in the castle. Player 3/GM does not roll for initiative, they always go last. Player 3 may not search for glyphs but may pick up, carry, etc. once they are dropped. Lord Voldemort may not pick up or carry the Deathly Hallows.

Victory Conditions: Players 1 or 2 automatically win once either: 1 figure becomes the “Master of Death" by having all 3 Deathly Hallow Glyphs OR Lord Voldemort is destroyed. Player 3 wins once all of Players 1 and 2 figures have been destroyed.

Pre-game: Before the game starts players 1 and 2 must spend 100 gold on the following things:
Bribe the Thieves Guild.
Shop at the Animal Emporium
Donate to the Temple of Brandar
Potions Shop
Once players have written their wagers on a piece of paper they are given to the GM.

MORE DETAILS FOR THIS SECTION ARE COMING!

Glyphs: All glyphs are items. They can be picked up, carried, dropped, passed or even destroyed under the right circumstances. Only Unique Heroes may control glyphs. I will not give the specifics regarding this as there are many “equipment” glyph rules out there and Ormus’ differ little. Most of the rules regarding glyph control are common sense based and self explanatory.

The most noteworthy difference is that the glyphs do not start on the map, they are hidden and must be discovered. Glyphs are hidden inside the MK Dungeon Artifacts you can see in the photos. In Campaign Part 1 I evenly placed 7 of the MK Artifacts across the map. There are 7 glyphs that are then placed in an empty Valkyrie Dice Bag. When a player stands adjacent to a MK Artifact they may declare “Search” if unengaged and instead of attacking. That player may then randomly choose one of the 7 glyphs from the bag. Each MK Artifact may only be searched once.

What? What did naruto ever do to you? That was a bit obsessive-compulsive of you, NecroBlade. I respect you, but that was a little much. Tell me what's so bad about anime and I'll shut my pie hole.

I'm also tired of everyone pissing and moaning just because I'm a "wimp." Let me say that I really don't enjoy stupid fun that Taelord was giving me. All I wanted was a virgin pina colada. Is that too much?

Attn thezandcshow: There will be no Naruto customs from Ormus. I don't see how you even thought of that seeing as it has absolutely nothing to do with Harry Potter. So take your Naruto rant, make your own thread about it, and stop taking up space in mine.

Great work Ormus, I just have a few things to say:

1. I love the way you set up the map, it looks like one I made a while back for a game night, fun design to play on.

2. Where did you find the Voldamort mini, its just awesome.

3. Great use for extra order markers, I might have to go make some now :D .

4. I love the Runa statue, from the time I first saw her, I thought she had the right posture for a statue.

Again, great work. I'll be watching this one for updates, thats for sure :D

I am a huge fan of anime. (Refer to avatar)

But... Naruto is a horrible, and preppy anime. Everyone only likes it because everyone thinks that everyone else likes it.

There is nothing bad with anime... The only bad thing is that "Cute" and "Wimpy" little animes like Naruto are giving anime fans a bad name, and are an insult to the art.

So I agree with NecroBlade here... DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS MAN.

Thanks to everyone for all the encouraging words.

To everyone who has questions: I promise they will be answered in time.

As far as the development of new Potter related customs... In the next part of the campaign Dumbledore will be making his appearance, Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin will be next and probably Snape after that(if I can find a mini that works). Hagrid will be coming if I can find a mini for him. As far as the kids, Harry, Ron, Hemione, Weasely Twins, etc. will be down the line. I have a Ron and Harry mini, but honestly I am making them in order of coolness(by Ormus standards), so obviously the Dark Lord had to be first.

Of course the true landmark of this custom Scenario Campaign (to me) is the glyphs. Yes they are supposed to be Uber-Powerful. There will be more and more equipment (Artifact and Potion) with each Campaign addition. In the Campaign part 2 there will be a potions shop where players can purchase potions and magical items.

As promised a full set of rules is coming next. This game of mine cannot be fully understood without knowing how the rules work.

More pics and the full rules set coming soon!!!

I'd like to see Sirius, Bellatrix LeStrange, the Basilisk, Snape, Dumbledore, Buckbeak (Theracus' long lost cousin?), Lupin, and almost anything from the Goblet of Fire. What are those weird underwater creatures in the 2nd challenge called?

Also make a Goblet of Fire.

Those are the mermaids of the Black lake. Know your Potter. :)
The squidy-things were grindylows (is that how it's spelled?) Know your Potter 8)

I didn't know which ones he was talking about. :?

Great work Ormus, I just have a few things to say:

1. I love the way you set up the map, it looks like one I made a while back for a game night, fun design to play on.

2. Where did you find the Voldamort mini, its just awesome.

3. Great use for extra order markers, I might have to go make some now :D .

4. I love the Runa statue, from the time I first saw her, I thought she had the right posture for a statue.

Again, great work. I'll be watching this one for updates, thats for sure :D

Hey Ormus? Where are you finding these minis at?

Several people have been asking me this. It is made by Gentle Giant. And yes, I have serious plans for that Riddle Grave. A warning though, the paint job on all included, especially Voldemort, is terrible. I repainted, washed, and dry-brushed mine.

This is amazing! I can't wait until its 100% playable!

It is 100% playable right now. I played this scenario last weekend. My wife(Witch Queen) trounced me(GM/Voldemort) and my buddy(Wizard Lord). All you need to play yourself is some creativity and supplementation. I will admit that there is alot involved with this expansion of mine that I have not yet included. Unfortunately I am not being as nice as CA with his Halo'Scape and giving you "everything you need". If there were enough requests for it, I could work on something of that nature?

First let me say thanks to all for your encouraging words. Second I must ask...is any one on this site a fan of the books? Or have you read the seventh book? It seems like the biggest supporters of "Quest for the Deathly Hallows" are not fans or they watch the movies exclusively. Just Curious?

Good eye! That is intended to be the Master Sword. It is a mega-bloks sword repainted. It already had a very mastersword-like look, so I just complimented it w/ the paint job. The entire map is a bit of an ode to Zelda maps, w/ the regions and all...

I am in love with that map...it simply amazing!!! I think my favorite part about it was the desert/oasis bit. I always wanted a desert terrain set of some kinda, if not to at lest give me more sand pieces. Wow...first page! Thank you so much to whomever made that happen!...

I feel that since this map has gotten some recognition I should give credit where it is due... This map has been an opus of sorts for me, I have played w/ the idea in my mind for a very long time...All of the map construction and customs were designed and engineered by Ormus, but many contributing members here gave me the inspiring muses that were needed for such creations...

One of the very first maps I ever saw of Heroscape was this one: by Caravaggio:

http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/7349/p10005979tt.jpg

This map and all the others in the thread were a catalyst for me several years ago...I have always showed a necessity to build caverns into any map I build, and the mountain/waterfall featured above by Caravaggio, along w/ his unique design of underground hex design has always lingered in my map building soul....

Also I must mention CupidsArt...I am sure many long time scapers remember his castle door custom(circa late '05 or so)... I've always put some kind of Grail reference into my customs and it has been a long wanting of mine to put those dreamblade maidens on and spray them gold....

And Thanks to Morgost, who was a muse of this miniature land....for there is a tale to be seen amongst the stacks of plastic, a song that is eternally sung, sometimes its in hexes....

And thank you to Allen Ginsberg.... funnymarx got it....

I'm glad you asked this good sir. This map contained every 7, 3, 2 and single hex from 15 Rotv, 4 Sotm, 2 TT, 9 RttFF, 2 Marvel, all the road hexes from 6 Fota and countless expansions. I did have a stack of twenty or so 24 hexers left over though. My 9 sets of VW went mostly unused as well as most of the TJ. There will never be a VS of this. I just don't work that way, I'm sorry.

Some notes on Slamdance Cosmopolis:

This map started as an ode to the concept of "world-building". I endeavored to weave a realm-fabric of different landscapes together in a style akin to that of Shigeru Miyamoto. With focus on classic fantasy tropes and motifs.

There was an original thought that encompassed the tone and theme that was behind this map:

I saw a forgotten vale shrowded in the nightfall of a starless night. As I pictured this place, I saw its history unfold...

Centuries ago, a great and proud castle rested on the mountain side, the lively musings of the townspeople could be heard at the foothills of the mountain, and a temple to the goddess stood high on the hill. Everything a vision of peace and oneness with the world. And then the grains of sand fall slowly through the hour glass, centuries pass....

Now. on this moonless night, I see the once great castle has fallen into a haunted cavern beneath the mountain...the village before bustling with life is now an old graveyard on the hill...and the acropolis is a ruin, a desecrated shrine of necromancy....

And then I built the map....

Some notes on map making techniques:

The challenge with building huge and epic maps is always: Playability. This of course has been expanded upon by many of the members here, and accessibility is usually the main arguement against large maps.

Always, it is my endeavor to make a large volume map, yet tailor it to remain accessible and playable. I love height. Another mapmakers version of the heroscape mountain is Ormus' heroscape hill. This kind of map aggrandizing will usually lead to something that is wholy aesthetic in nature and non-reachable by non-flying figures. Also just as a side note, most of the games I conduct on these huge maps are Hero (not squad) based, there is always a limitation on ranged squads especially, the gameplay just won't work otherwise. These maps aren't made for kill-em-all-type of scenarios. Melee just makes for a more even playing ground when the literal playing ground isn't very even(As in 60 height hexes).

Refer to the below pictures of the stripped down acropolis area of my latest map....Note the solid climb of road tiles both up the front and down the back side of the hill.

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/100_0760.jpg

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/100_0759.jpg

Also refer to these pics of the interior of the mountain. Notice the solid run of climbing road tiles throughout the ascent...

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/100_0737.jpg

Even from the multiple entrances in the dungeon, the road tiles stretch unabated to the top...

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/100_0745.jpg

Also you will note that in all of my ascents there is never more than a 2 hex height climb and even that is rare, most all height climbs are no more than 1 hex high. This does take some special attention to detail when designing the map, but a carefully placed road can be the key to making a playable epic map.....

On a side note, I'm writing a mapmaking guide of sorts called Designing Valhalla: Do's, Dont's, and Why's of Custom Mapmaking, and one of my Big 5 (five general topics that any other mapmaking question can be filed under) is Playability--Would you mind if I used some of what you have posted in that section? Due credit would be given, of course.

It's not a spoiler at all. The Big 5 are (in order of importance to me, in my mapmaking ventures):

1. Originality
2. Functionality
3. Aesthetics
4. Believability
5. Buildability

These are just the general categories that I've been able to stick everything in. They all mesh at different points, are difficult to rank in order of importance, and many things can be inserted under multiple categories--but to me, those are the fivegeneral categories that make the most sense.

For instance, I would mainly put what I borrow from you here in the Functionality category (because that's what you're explaining--how to make the map functional; I'm sure that comes as a shock ;)). However, it could be argued tht this also fits into Aesthetics (due to the way you keep roads running throughout the map) and Believability (due to how you try to remain consistent with the one-level-at-a-time stairways. Makes more sense than many two, three, or even four-level jumps, unless you're making, say, a map named Jotun's Summer Cottage.

I'd say that it could also be argued that this map violates general Buildability procedures--because frankly, not many of us can build it. However, under Buildability would fall categories such as the way one chooses to create different sturctures, their tile usage, and overall tile conservation (like not wasting tiles which would, when removed, make a hole that is easily covered by a 7- or 24-hexer). In these respects, your map would greatly excell, no doubt.

So they're not going to be the end-all, be-all, "Make Your Maps Like This, So Sayeth The Valhallan Lord" kind of guide--it'll just be a general overview of mapmaking, and how one can begin making quality maps, get better at making quality maps, or (in the case of experienced mapmakers) it serves as a little pat on the back or a little confidence booster that hopefully they can still gain something out of.

The Big 5 are only the fist venture into Designing Valhalla, but I'm hoping to have these out soon. I will continue adding onto it, getting into more specifics under each category (such as going in-depth into tile usage, etc.), as the Big 5 will just be an overall picture (although I have enough general information to go into as it is). Hopefully, after a while, it ecomes a good resource for all mapmakers, of any experience level.

Thats the plan, anyway. Hope you like the spoiler. ;)

Interesting. Thanks for the preview of ideas. I like your approach to this and I agree w/ your theories. I'll look out for your thread.

Yep, I would say that I get an F in Buildability. One reason I dont use VS is because I don't build layer by layer... For example the Mountain pictured above started as a skeleton of 24 and 7 hex tiles stacked to full height....I then went back and laboriously fleshed it out w/ the 3, 2 and single hexes, to add aesthetics and make it playable. So many hex mountains on this site are just stacked 24s, it has a sub-optimal aesthetic value and that just wont do for me. I don't want any part of the map to appear like a stack of 24 or 7 hexes. It should have an even flow in the appearance. It's not a very effecient way to build a map and is a weird technique...but its the only way I can do it.

But you get an A+ in Aesthetics! Plus some major extra credit--and +rep because I don't remember if I gave it or not!

It's not a very effecient way to build a map and is a weird technique...but its the only way I can do it.

I actually understand. I don't have nearly as much terrain as you do (i'd probably lapse into some sort of Heroscaping coma if I did), I understand the urge to break away from the "easy" way of designing things. Lately I've been doing a lot of BoV-sized maps, and the large maps I have posted are largely ones I made with friends for fun)\, so I don't have a whole lot of room to get around conventional ways of doing things (especially when I'm dealing with BoV limitations). However, I do adopt the stratgy of building a main structure first and then working out (and occasionally down) from there. Ecdinox Pass is a map that I built the basic structure for, how I wanted the bridges to look, before I even got to Virtualscape or my terrain to build it. Catholl Cavern and Ponsike Mounatin are both interesting takes on White Noise's side-cave idea. I took it a step farther with Quenthas Valley, which I created while toying around with diving rules with rouby44 and White Noise. I really like how unconventional these maps are, but then again, they're not exactly to the scale that yours are. I would jump at the chance to design with your resources... ;D

However, I can best relate to what you're meaning with my map Gransoth Falls I have substantially more terrain now than I did when I built it (mainly because since I've gotten back into 'Scape these past few months I've dropped at least 300 bucks into the WOTC Relief Fund), but when I made this, I created the waterfall before I did anything else. Then when I realized the top of the mounatain was going to be 17 levels high, and I had 2 RotV sets (with most of a third) to work with, I had to come up with clever ways of getting around that barrier. Although my computer failed and I lost the build files for that map, along with many others, I remember how difficult it was to design around something like that, while trying to stay realistic looking and staying rather unconventional. Probably 90% of the inside of tha large mountain is hollow-- that was one where clever placement of walls and support beams (that kinda shaped into large Y's by spreading things out towad the top of the column) came into play. And the last thing I wanted to do was just stack 24-hexers. It just doesn't look as good that way.

So, in a really round-about way of saying it, I don't think it's that weird at all. It's the natural for me as well.

EDIT: I realized that you have absolutely no idea what maps I'm talking about, whereas we all know what one you are referring to ;). Here (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=26778)'s the link to my thread, if you haven't been there before.

On the contrary. I know exactly which maps you refer too. I lurk about the map threads and I try to stay current w/ all the good maps. Even smaller maps give me the fuel I need to create my own new ideas. I think that every artist should be knowledgable of their contemporaries. So many great artists from history were contemporary w/ each other and pooled their ideas...it's the same cooperative idea sharing that creates art 'movements'....

With that said, I can honestly say, Proto that your maps are some of my favorite of the current maps around the site...

Especially, Ponsike Mtn. and Gransoth Falls. So I understand what you mean. Also I am currentlly experimenting w/ your concept of the side map representing the interior of an overworld structure. The idea of corresponding overworld and underworld maps is something I have thought about for a while, but your maps have given me some new concept's to try. Thanks....

Well I can't take credit for the idea, it was White Noise who came up with it. I just went to town with it... Still planning on a map that has multiple small lakes connected by underwater tunnels (on the side-map), with a main area covered in jungle brush (like a kelp forest).

Funny that you would link this of all things. As you can see from all my maps, but especially the most recent, that I have a serious trend toward Zelda tropes. You can even see the likeness of the master sword in lost woods(LttP), secret passage under graveyard(LoZ), and the kings tomb(LoZIItAoL)) references in the pics. They are subtle yes, identifyable by only the most keen observer. But yes the ideal of over and underworlds is a concept close to my heart, embued no doubt by the likes of Shigeru Miyamoto...

I have been working on another beast of a map, but unfortunately it can't be finished until after January 5th or so....

I never post any of my normal sized skirmish maps... Usually I take 15 to 30 min to build one from scratch...we play a 500 point army each and then the map comes right down...But recently I took a few snapshots of some of these smaller map games in play...

The picture/map quality isn't up to my normal par. These were quick setups to play a quick challenge game or 2, and the photos were really for my own benefit, for the purposes of recreating/virtualscaping possibilities in the future. But I wanted to show some of these smaller'n ones for the community...Enjoy..

These are just some quick snaps of a recent map... I am working on something huge w/ this set, but this is just my stab at a cohesive 2v1 dungeon for now...

This is made w/ 4 MSIII's. Plus what can be seen... No brown tiles were used on this setup...

Mostly this was intended to be a test map to run a 2vs1 Dungeon type of scenario... The armies shown are as we played them, though the start zones were adjusted a bit after the photo, and the commons did not all start on the board...

Object: Player 1 and 2 (220pnts each) to exit the dungeon w/ the Brandar chest in tow... They chest symbolizes a treasure guarded over by Othkurik(starts off the map)...whenever the chest is pulled, Othkurik 'wakes up' and can then be activated by player 3...Also threw in Hawthorne, he just had to be the one guarding that chest...Hawthorne starts as shown in the pic below, positioned in front of the Brandar glyph...The trap for the scenario is that Hawthorne starts the game as a statue guardian, unableto be to activated, when the trap is sprung, player 3 immediately takes a turn w/ Hawthorne and can activate him normally from then...
Glyphs used were: 2 Healing Potion, 1 Herioc Rune, 1 Talisman Defense all symbol side up. 1 Brandar power side up.

My buddy picked Erevan and also drafted the Obsidian's as a joke...Fire summoned-minions-of-a-fire-wizard...he was rping the whole 'dungeon crawl' concept....and we jokingly referred to the term 'pet-tanking' throughout the game...

This dungeon consists of 3 joined rooms. I will picture them each seperate so you get the idea. The ultimate goal was to retrieve the Brandar glyph from the high spot in room 2 and eventually place it on the altar custom in room 3. I ran the DM on this and was squished terribly by the adventuring party. Jotun was the 'boss fight' in the final room. Most pics below are in game. Alas I did not get anypics of the in game from room 1 at all and very little from room 2. Room 2 went fast w/ Dupuis killing Wo-Sa-Ga in 2 turns. Also I used the same mechanic for the Tglyphs as in found in the official RoB scenario...Great mechanic guys!!
