Great work. I have both issues of Codex printed and in a 3 ring binder. The Drones and Vipers watercolor is my favorite. I know there was a heroscape comic already but you should do a one or two page comic for the Codex in that watercolor style. That would be awesome to see.
Keep creating!

I've done a lot of art for Codex 3. It's not as 'illuminated' as the pieces above. Lot's of shadows, dirt, and grime (orcs with flies over their heads). I like slopping the india ink around. A lot.
and I made a point to do more margin drawings. Just 1 figure pictures.

J-N-P, Karkadinn has an online non-HS comic fully realized and has enlisted me to draw. I'm gonna try my little heart out to do it this summer.
DS, I've been avoiding drawing dragons, But I should give it a try. Especially with Braxas. She's the coolest. Braxas's pose is real nice too. If you hold her by the mid-section she's curling back like a snake or salammander would in real life.

I was home today watching the kids and was revising a Krug picture when I had some free time. Well as things went along I thought of Krug taking on Jotun. But then I thought Jotun fighting Minions would be more cool.
So I sketched a few things and went with this:
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/5_15_2006jotunminions001.jpg
I liked it. I had to alter the hanging Minon's head to show he was more incapacitated. So I repositioned his head and added another minion
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/detail.jpg
and set to inking the piece. I'm glad I took a picture before starting.
Here is as far as I got with the inking.
I lost it. I wanted the dangling Minion to stand out more from Jotun, but he and the giant get too tangled up in the inking.
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/5_15_2006jotunminions007.jpg
Here it is scanned. i was hoping the scanner might work some kind of magic on it. LOL.

I did find the sudema pic a little odd though, I had always pictured her as a some sort of mummy siren, but your pic is more HHH (Horrendous Horror Hag). What happened to the sexy slinky exotic undead queen of my dreams???

I dunno, it just doesn't spark with me:
1) Jotun seemed bigger in the sketch
2) Jotun and the dangling minion are not so defined from one another.
3) not too exciting.

Hex, the mechanics of the Jotun picture are very solid. The drawing is very nice. But you're right, it lacks emphasis and definition, which is a defining characteristic in a lot of your art.
If you were to redo this drawing, I would move the angle up and to the right, so that we're looking down on Jotun, and the minion is held away from his body. Just a camera change would make it more dynamic, and it would allow you to separate Jotun from the minion. The other minion could still be coming up from behind.
You might do what I do - grab a pad of scratch paper and fiddle around with poses until you find one that makes you say, 'aha! Now that's interesting!' It takes me, on average, four or five practice sketches before I can ever find the pose, angle and detail for any particular drawing.
I still think it is a nice drawing. It's just not as awesome as some of your others; Tornak and the arrows is a fantastic example, or the zettians vs monks. Even your single poses are very dramatic - I love the Microcorp.

I agree with you and Imax, Hex. I love the original sketch but the ink took something away. For one, I thought Jotun was scowling in the sketch. In the final version he has a little grin as he admires his ragdoll.
You could do the pose as Imax recommended but have him turning his head to grin at the oncoming minion. Like, "Jotun like play wif silly red bats."

Don't change the pose, not the problem.
The problem is in the inking. Varing the line wieght will go a long way improving this piece. What are you inking with? The background line are to heavy to have the foregoround figure pop out. To correct this ink the background in thinner lighter stokes and go heavy on the figure dangling. The shaded areas on the background need to hatched or washed instead of blacked out. Hatch the areas in the under the minions wings will allow you the create the illusion of depth and roundness in the figure form of Jotun's legs and toro tunic.
Sorry to be so critical but I thought this might help you and others.
It's a nice job that need a little TLC inking.

Thanks guys. Oogie, I wanted to post this mistake cuz I thought it would be fun to show something in progress and get some feedback and suggestions. And I got both. Thanks again to everybody who chimed in with suggestions or comments.
I will definitely try different poses and alter the inking for Jotun. I was in a hurry as I had 3 kids with me and luckily one was sleeping. So I wasn't as focused as I like to be with the thinking of the inking.
Imax, I do try several poses, but in this instance I went with the 4th sketch that was starting to click. Again, time was a factor with my babysitting duties.
It's funny, at some point, I knew I had lost the definition between Jotun and the Minion. But I went on and the composition never gave me that overall good feeling.
It's times like these that I wish I drew and inked a lot more than I do. I spent the last 4-6 years drawing virtually nothing for my own pleasure. I'd be much more confident and flexible in my abilities.
I like the comic book style as you all can see. If you asked me to draw from real life, it'd come out, just okay.
But I don't mind. I like cartooning style. A lot.
I have a scanner/copier/printer combination, so next time I may copy the pencils and try several inking processes.
Thanks again for all the comments. I'm so eager to accept the challenge and get back to you all. It gives me the incentive, you know?

I gotta admit, CupidsArt PMed me the other day for some artwork he could color. I sent it to him yesterday. I'm hoping to see what comes of that piece too.
Guys, if Rune's color assist is any example, you can punch my work up so much better than how I have it.
I was kinda lamenting that all I had to offer was B&W stuff to the Codex. Dont' get me wrong, I think the Codex needs b&W stuff, but as an online affair, it should have the coloring techniques CA, Rune, and Others (IMax included) can implement as often as possible too.
I'm glad there's an avenue for that type of presentation.
I can color, but oh man, that's a whole 'nuther hour of work, thinking and whatnot - and I'd rather just wanna draw and throw the ink around!

Yeah there's the misconception that would arise from this picture. Jotun isn't throwing a flying figure. He's just holding a defeated minion. That's why I don't think this should be a cover. It appears as a misread on an ability!

Dodge and Burn? - I just used the dodge and burn tools on Photoshop to make the dark areas darker and the light areas lighter.

The picture of Jotun reminds me of when I was a kid and our half-wit cat would sit in the kitchen proudly displaying a lizard or mouse he had caught. "Uhhhhh . . . Mr. General Ullar sir, looky what I got fer ya!" (I'm imagining the voice of the abominable snowman from Bugs Bunny "I will call him George.....")
Great artwork Hex. Really impressive.

It was pretty simple, really. I just printed them onto some tan-ish paper, cut them out, crumpled them up (a lot! Doesn't matter if there are a few little rips, it adds character, just don't rip the whole thing in half), then stuck them in a book and set a big box of acrilic paint on top of the book and left them in for about 20 hours. I'm sure it would have worked with less time, though.

you can get the same effect with either Photoshop, Fireworks or Corel Draw in much more controlled envioronment. Plus corner rolls, edge tears and aging effects can be added.
HEH what are you inking your drawing with it appears the large areas are done with magic marker. If it would be to your advanage to change to india ink and brush. When marker is printed the black area are not going to be solids. The pen strock are going to show through.

Thanks for the compliments, Atmos!
Just pure India ink - no markers for me :x .
Where are you seeing a problem? I've sent copies to Newbie with solid black intact.
Gibby's look fine, too!
Controlled environment? Who always wants control in art-making? I think Gibby did a swell job. And if one was to hold the parchment in their hand or in a frame, the interaction of 'realness' versus affect is beyond compare.

It's all about the texture of the paper. It actually feels like a cross between an animal skin and cloth. Sure, you can get the idea of the look in photoshop, but you're not going to get the texture of the paper.

Hex has always been the man with the artistic hand. I've always thought his drawings and artwork were awesome. Both he and I would always be drawing in one form or another and I could never keep up. Maybe thats why I went more computer then hand drawn. Trust me, I've known Hex the better part of my life and he has always been awesome. I look forward to seeing his work on the cover of or inside the codex.

I'm scraping the barrel now.
I haven't had a chance to draw anything new, but here are some sketches and studies for some of the figures.
Romans and Greeks.
IMax was the one who got me on the Roman subject matter for the Codex. He wanted them marching into battle to accompany Bad_Calvin's article . I tried and tried on that request, but I just wanted to go with them in battle. Here was my attempt at his request, but I just didn't like where it was going.

Alright HEH, I ve got it. Do you take requests :) I am a bit of an artist as well but no where near your caliber. If I see an image I can reproduce it but I can not generally go from brain to paper like you do. Anyways your art style inspired this thought so technically it is your idea so now you have to paint it since it is your thought to begin with
Here we go, I want to see Theracus comin right at me, wings out in a dive, beak open to rip my face off. Slightly tilted forward to represent a drop in alltitude. On his back is Sir Denrick, sheild off to the side a bit, and sword cocked back to take off whatever Theracus leaves behind. I see intensity in his eyes and his face almost curled up into a war cry. I have a vision of this being the last thing I ever see, it should be intense.
Alright not to put you on the spot, but if you get time I would love to see this scene. If it does not strike you as it does me, cool, just a thought. I have this image burned into my brain and it wants out any way it can :D

Oh the above picture was completed recently. I showed it privately to some folks and one member thought MajorX17 was humping the hound (I think). Some one else thought the Wulsinu in the pit were dead. Well one is going to RIP thanks to the female Krav, but the rest are alive and trying to plague.

Tonight I remembered doing an assignment for art class in high school. We could draw whatever we wanted. Mine was a poster for
a television series - Warriors of a lost time! The premise was, of course, about warriors plucked from different times/realms to fight together against villainous forces!
Silverstoner was in many of the same art classes in high school. He may remember this picture.
Anyway, I spent 10 minutes looking for the picture. Here it is. Tell me Ultradoug didn't travel back in time and tell me the future would be Heroscape?!?
There's Drake (or an AE), Deadeye, Izumi, Microcorp, amazon warrior (wave 5), and possibly Jotun or a gladiator! LOL

I like the DW9000 and Samuri's/Raelin and the Romans. Both really seemed to impress upon the special abilities if the hero involved. Raelin's aura and Marcus' leadership/inspiration.

Wow. Thanks for the comments, Hahma!
As you can tell from the pictures, I've allied characters that are not necessarily aligned with each other in the Valhalla universe: Samurai w/Raelin, Romans against Utgar's forces, etc. (I still don't know what to make of Vydar's allegiances!). But that's okay. I'm approaching it from a fun gameplay perspective.
The DW9K was split into a spread over two pages in Codex 3. Not sure if you saw it there. I don't like the way it looked. I'm not one to complain - especially to Atmospro and all the work he puts forth - but I'm glad I can share the composition here in its intirety. I need to put a bigger scan up. Same with my all-time favorite - Marcus & Co. vs. Wolves.

You're entirely welcome HEH :)
Sadly, I haven't read a comic of any kind in ages. I collected them for a while when I was in the Marines in the 80's and still have a box full of old X-Men, Wolverine, Ghost Knight, The Avengers etc. I'm sure comics have changed since then.
I have dabbled in writing fantasy for off and on and off off off for the past 15 years. So for me, strong character development is important in writing. With your drawings, I just got a feeling (especially with Marcus) of the characters in your work. I thought it was really cool.
I'd be the wrong person to talk to about top notch comics, as like I said I haven't picked one up in ages. As it is, I'm just trying to find time to read The Clash Of Kings by George R.R. Martin. l have too many interests and not enough time. I suppose I could cut my 6 hours of sleep a night down to 4 hours.
Take care and keep up the good work.

here is the b&w artwork for the Codex 4 I submitted. I don't think the Marrden Hound/Major conflict made it nor the Krug Ashra picture. Maybe next time?
Here's the cover sketch and inked version. I'll a larger colored version when I can.
Runehardt's color really pushed the cover! I think the image and his colors made for a great autumn issue. Runehardt's colors evoke those crisp, fall days I really love.
I envisioned the inked picture taking place at night, but Runehardt evokes a better atmosphere around dawn or dusk. I just love his coloring. Great work Runehardt!!!

Inspired by a sketch Atmos posted in the fun art thread, I wanted to share this sketch of Syvarris that's been driving me crazy. I'm obsessed with getting this piece done.
Outta nowhere, I did this quick sketch during a tech committee meeting for my school district. I liked this because of the viewpoint and tilted angle, slanted bow and lift foot of syvarris. He's deadly but not very masculine (IMO), so that lifted foot sealed it for me.
Btw, the head in the middle was done before the archer picture. oops.
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/syv1.jpg
Then today I had some down time after school and did a quick sketch with a crayola marker on the back of some worthless memo or something.
this sketch grabbed me with Syvarris's shark like helmet and the falling targets ( I had Marro Warriors in mind). I was trying to do those Arthur Rackham, big-footed figures for fun and I think I captured some good poses in the process. So I decided to keep the sketch for reference:
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/syv2.jpg
Tonight I started what will hopefully be the final drawing. Syvarris came out decent and I didn't even use the lifted foot. I'm going to make the falling targets Roman Archers, I think. I'm frightened to ink chain mail on Syvarris's skirt. How do I do that?!? individual cirucular links? Dots? Gonna have to reference that when it's time.

This is very (I mean this with much love) Herb Trimpe-ish. Very cool.
Also, your Ashra drawing... I do think that there is a lot of detail behind and surrounding the figure that does obscure her a bit. It took a moment to see that she had beheaded the hound. I think that to bring her out more either do it with color, or soften the surrounding images.
Cool stuff and getting better and better......

Excellent. The list of uploaded files is linked from the Upload tool. Edit the Art and Photos page to see how to make a gallery.

I will create subpages as we get more stuff up there. I need to also tweak the skins a bit. I should be have the white background gone tonight.

I like the one with the Marro vs. the Vipers quite a bit. It looks better than you think. It reminds me of the comic art you would see from the 20's and 30's.

I really like your work, it reminds me of some things I use to find on an old board about a webcomic. Believe me, you far surpass that.
(My only problem is that people with slow internet... this thread is murder for them. You might want to switch to the wonders of deviantart links. Or Imageshack, photobucket, anything really. It'll also stop the annoying page stretch when tring to read the comments/compliments.)

Wow man, thanks for the kind words. Sorry for the many images. I do have these images up at photobucket, so I'll provide a link soon.
OH, you can browse a selected few at the HeroscapeWiki site, HERE (http://www.heroscape.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page)
Speaking of slow, the glory of having three children and both parents working has caught up to me. Lordy, I don't have much time for anything anymore. I still make time for Heroscapin' though. The only recreational thing that matters to me nowadays!
Thanks for looking and the comments, HS ~ KNT!

I don't get into this section much, but those pics are awesome. I really think you captured the action of the characters perfectly. My favorite is with X-17 grappling with the Hounds. Wicked pics man.

Thanks Uprising! I really like the X-17/Wulsinu picture too. I've always wanted to make my best Heroscape piece be the Marrden Hounds - they're one of my all-time favorite units in the entire game and you gotta admit - the sculpts look so darned cool.
I like certain parts of that picture and others? Eh. But the dogs and Dund came out pretty good.
Thanks for stopping in and looking. It's a fun forum. I kind of wish there was more artwork here from more members!
I wonder if there's some way I could persuade the 'officials' to let us see some more concept sketches. I should look into contacting someone.
Thanks again!

This deserves a few more looks.
If you havn't seen the work of our own Hex_Enduction_Hour, then may I suggest you check out page one. My favorite is the Microcorp Agent leaning in the corner, the lighting is so cool! 8)

Here is a drawing I did for 'Scaper Jim for a work in progress. I did two ink sketches for him and went from there:
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Heroscape%20Artwork/jimart.jpg
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Heroscape%20Artwork/12_10_06artworkforJIm002.jpg
And here is the first page to a Heroscape comic I was working on titled, From the North. The wordless tale involves the lone, female Ninja of the Northern Wind attempting to retreive her katana from the crumpled heap of a defeated Gladiatron.
In the process, she encounters a slew of Vydar units - Q9, Nakitas/G-nators, Braxas, more Gladiatrons, and yes....Dund.
Don't have to time to really go full throttle and attempt a comic, I have a lot of the story mapped out in little sketches.
The first page shows the point of view zooming in on the destroyed Gladiatron with the sword in his back.
The Cyber Claw echoes the arch of the ruin and it is within this structure that the female ninja plans her next move. I realized while drawing the second and third panel that the Claw juxtaposed against the archway is symbolizing the danger the ninja still faces and thought that was a neat little feature.
Another symbol I'm trying to implement is the wind sweeping throughout the story. The first panel's subject is supposed to be obscured by the dust and wind and as the 'camera' zooms in, the destroyed Gladiatron is revealed in the second and third panels.
Anyway:

Thanks Annerios. Someday I'd like to get around and complete the inking on that.
I think the next HS drawing I'll do is Kiova with the Imperium. My thoughts keep coming back to those units.
Any Giyo yet?

Going to try to save time and go without inking my artwork. Give me a chance to tighten my pencils and practice with the old graphite for a while.
Here's Kiova (take note how big the actual figure's sword is! I'm striving for that length here!) with a squad of Imperium.
Annerios, think this'll 'fly' with the Heroscape Guide?

"Holy flurking schnitt!"
Of course! That is great. I love the detail on the "dreads".
I already saved it. Since you are drawing, I'll have to send you a PM later with some ideas you may want to kick around for the Guide.
Did you notice how they simplified Thormun's Journal and made the images so they would fit perfectly as little snapshots in the Guide? That was nice of them.

WOW, that is an awsome picture HEH. I like how you made them in mid-flight as opposed to just fighting someone on the ground level.

Thanks Up. I'm still learning to do decent feather wings. I may go back and define that last Imperium just a bit more too.
Hopefully more to come!

You should be teaching! (I know, you're already a teacher.)
Another fantastic look into your mind's eye.
