View Full Version : I Need Help Making a Map (not really)
Dr. Weirdscaper
January 5th, 2008, 12:58 PM
I need help finding a map that uses
15 ROTV, 15 SOTM, 30 RTTFF, 30 VW,
22 FOTA, 21 TT, 06 MARV, 110 extra
double hexed snow tiles, tiles from 01
of each unique packs from waves 1-4,
and 05 of each common from waves
1-4 exept for monks & guards (I only
have 03 of those packs). I recently got
hit in the head and lost all ability to come
up with map designs of my own, as well
as the ability to search for them, or even
click on anything. I'm not going to ask
nicely, after all, why should I? And I'm
expecting to see these maps in 20 minutes,
because people come to maps & senarios
not to look at cool maps, but to fulfill random
map requests.
(edit) list updated.

Well good luck finding anyone who owns that much let alone has a map that uses all that. I've been itching to build a monster in VS though. So I might build you a map using those requirements. Hows that sound?

Sounds good.
When I started this thread, I was thinking about adding "AND NO VS!!!",
to complete the joke, but part of me is curious to see what people come
up with.

I lost the mental ability to click on anything.
On a serious note, that is a cool battlefield.
Of course, it only uses 05 of each expansion
and I don't have 40 ROTV, I 'only' have 15.

If it's ever built, I want to see an epic manuver like a Venoc Viper boosted by Mittens and Arcolarh diving off the top level into the ocean and racing over to a Hive for the killing stroke.
BTW: Highest point is currently Level 69, 78 if you count the tops of the Warehouse Ruins.
[EDIT]As of the last verify, the tile count is 2503. I will admit that I did cheat a bit. I can't really expand the Lava section much more than it already is, so I filled the unused portions of the tower with the majority of the leftover Lava tiles. I'm probably going to use them and a lot of the leftover snow as filler in various parts.

This is a work in progress... but let me know if it piques your interest. Right now it's about 100 levels tall, and structurally very solid.
I intend to make it much taller. I also intend to flare the top more to make more of a playing surface on top.

Oh, I'm interested.
Gotta love a map that will eventually look like The Genesis Device.
Just as long as you give me less 'animated' instructions.
I will be building these maps in a location that has no computers,
and will be using printed out pics. for instructions.
Having said that, keep up the animation, it looks cool.
Eckels
January 29th, 2008, 12:26 PM
SLOWER ANIMATION!? ARE YOU KIDDING??!
BUILD FASTER!!!!! GO!!!
Yeah that animation was just to show where I've made it to so far... You can print your own instructions after It's finished.
(Yeah I guess it does kinda look like the genesis device. Didn't think of that one.)
The structure does contain some interesting balancing, but it should all be locked together by the structure and it's own weight. I'd love to see it built when it's done. It's also intended to be fully playable - not just a pretty map. (So far the only unplayable area is the very top, with the lava, but it looks cool, so meh)
Hopefully you'll be as impressed when it's all done.
So then yeah, I'll keep working on it.

As a sort of a rule for this 'experiment', I have been keeping myself from
giving any advice for these maps, (the idea being, if YOU had my collection,
and if you wanted to build a map that uses all the terrain, what would you build),
but if you still want to keep the upper level the way it is, I might suggest using a few Glyphs of Brandar, or some Marvel Glyphs as portals.

heh, yeah it won't take more than 999 battlements, and he has well over that...
I finished my map today. I could have kept going, but the size of the map, and the fact that I'm running VirtualScape in an emulated windows environment on a mac, makes it run like CRAP. So I have to stop. It takes far too long to simply place a tile, or delete a tile.
I didn't get a chance to place battlements, ladders, walls, trees, or flags, but the structure is all there, and it solid as a rock. I've been very careful to structure it in an effective architectural pattern. I DID use all the volcano, most of the castle set, most of the base sets, some of the snow sets, most of the marro sets, and lots of road.
The tower is just over 3 feet wide and about 6.25 feet tall.
I am very confident in the structure of the tower, and that it can be built, and will be very sturdy. many of the internal structures are are kinda pretty.
This design would also could show some custom lighting really well, if you were interested in that sort of thing.

You don´t have to load all tiles into the collection, i believe that you have an almost unlimited amount of tiles in vs. The collection is just needed to give you a warning if you exceed that amount of tiles - but you can continue building. to check how many sets you are using click on tools > verify battlefield.

Ch1cano0: Wow, thanks a lot for making those renders.... absolutely beautiful.
As far as gravity - It WILL stand strong when built. It's been designed very carefully to distribute weight to the structural areas, and use it's own weight to keep it together. Gravity is our friend ;)
Now that I've seen how truly beautiful it looks rendered, I'm almost tempted to keep working on it.... :) Sadly this computer can't really handle it. Maybe someday!

Those are amazing, Eckels and Technomagus. I'd love to give this challenge a shot but I am sloooooow in VS.

I've uploaded the VS file into the downloads section, though it still needs to be approved. It'll probably take me another week or so to finish the map, hopefully. I'm almost through the terrain. I still have to lay down roads, but I'm almost entirely through the RotV terrain and Marvel terrain. Lava and snow are a bit further behind. I've still got a ton of glaciers left to place, but I'm brainstorming plans for them. I've used around 2/3 of the castle walls, all of the 7- and 9-hex tiles, and ~half the wall walks, ladders, and flags. Only 6 doors currently, though. I'll have to fix that...
And it's up! You can get the vs file here (http://www.heroscapers.com/download/index.php?dlid=1267).

Looking good, Technomagus.
Think carefully about the glaciers...
There will be a lot of them to deal with.

Make a giant Pit, The whole map is one giant pit with lava in the center. Wish I would do it but I don't have enough sets...... :(

I actually thought about making big pit map halfway through building the tower - the only problem I forsee, is that the pit that I would build (with weirdscapers collection) would quickly become too big to reach your arms down into the middle to move figures around. You'd need a stick or something.

Got a new update for you. I managed to find a spot for some of the Glaciers. Got almost half of 'em down now.

Just a small update (no pics today, I'm afraid...)
If VS counts tiles the way i think it does...
Current status: 3596/7916 tiles placed. ~45.42% of total
The total (7916) includes the 196 base tiles that I cannot effectively use because of stacking Walls, while the placed count does not.
It should be more akin to 3596/7720 tiles placed. ~46.58% of total.
Finally found a place for a 7th door. 15 more to go...
And the first Glyph, the Glyph of Thorian, has been placed in a well hidden, well protected, and very dangerous spot.

I bet you guys thought I forgot about this? No such luck, I'm afraid. I've just been busy with life et all, especially since I just got a new job recently.
I've got another update for you guys, though!

Two glyphs have now been placed. As I place them, each Glyph will require quite some effort and risk to obtain, depending on how valuable it is.

Heh. That actually works to my benefit. I need to expand the base of the Megahex, but I didn't want to rework the entire bottom layer. Now I can just do some rearranging here and there, and I might even be able to get rid of some of the remaining 27 7-Hex Swamp tiles from before!

It's a win/win situation. :D
If it helps your build to know what's ahead for my collection:
I will not be getting anymore ROTV, or SOTM mastersets. (15 each was my goal)
I will not be getting anymore VW, or RTTFF sets. (30 each was my goal)
Unless I see it in stores, I will probably not be getting TT, or FOTA for a while.
I WILL, however, be focusing on getting more MARVEL sets. Eventually,
I hope to have 15 of those. I will be getting a little at a time over the next
few months.
