I might be a little OCD, but here is how I store all my HS stuff.

I built one wood boxes from 1x12 and one wood box from 1x10. They are made to look 'rustic' no exposed fasteners on the outside (could not hide hinges on inside). I pack all the HUGE charaters in one side of one box on a groved 1x9 that holds the bases perfectly so they don't move while stored or transported. I pack all the rest of the characters in plano cases (37XX series). All the terrain and other stuff goes in the other box all stacked nice and neat. I have 3 MS, 4 RTTFF, 2 VW, 1 TT, Atleast 1 of all expansions and 2 of some of the commons I like best. (I have 2 castle sets on order).

Are any of the rest of you as organixed as this? or am I alone in my quest to arrange neatly?

Any way here are pics I just made as I packed it all up (took about 30 minutes.

First all my stuff on a table

I just weighted all this stuff in the boxes. The small box is 22 lb empty and 38 lb full. The large box is ~25 lb empty and 45 lbs full. That (not including the table I built) is ~83 lbs of HS stuff.....is that too much?

If my Heroscape stuff ever got put away, I'm sure it would be organized. :D

Luckily, everyone who plays just comes to my place for 'Scape, so I don't have to worry about transportation.

I find the best way to store my rapidly growing collection is to just leave it out until my wife makes me put it away :D

I like the way you are storing the squads I think I'll have to grab a few of those.

The figures are in are Plano 37XX series cases. Walmart sells them in the fishing department. Most sporting goods stores have a better selection than walmart.

The trees are in a Plano StowAway. I don't know the number off hand. I will post again tonight.

I also uses several 3503 (spinner bait boxes) for storing the cards, Major Q, all of the road tiles, and all the snow tiles.

Nice storage set up, MartinDWhite! Can you post a close up picture of the grooved base that you use to store the larger figures please? I'm interested on how you made it.

Thanks,
Newb.

Please excuse the fuzzy picture. If you need I can take a clearer one tonight when I get home.

I took a 1x12 and used a router with a dovetail bit to cut the grooves in the base. I then cut its width down to fit the layout of two figures across each grove that I planned to use.

I used a pair of rails to guide the outside of the router to get straight and even grooves that are the same size. Be aware there are two sizes of double bases if you try and make one of these. Also be very careful with the width of the grove; in less than 1/32 width change the grove goes from too tight to get in to too loose to hold the figure.

Ah I see. The bases slide in to the grooves. Cool. Thanks for the explanation and the picture!

If you don't want to go to the work of routing out the undercuts, or don't have the tools, what you can do is get some thin cork sheet and use a mat cutter to slice it at a 45° angle, and then glue that in strips to your backing board, with a sheet of basswood or other thin sheet wood glued on top for rigidity and strength. If you didn't want to cut the cork strips yourself, you could use model railroad cork roadbed, which would already have the bevels cut, and use that.

How to build a box like these:

Materials
1"x12"x12'
1"x8"x6'

1) cut 1x12 into three 24" long pieces, two 18" pieces, and one 25.625" pieces
The 24" pieces are the front, back, and part of the bottom
The 18" pieces are the sides with handle cutouts
The 25.625" piece is part of the top

2) cut the 1x8 into one 24" piece and one 25.5" long piece
The 24" piece is part of the bottom
The 25.625" piece is part of the top

3) cut a 1.5"x6" cutout centered about 1.5" from the top of each 18" piece to for the handles

4) rip the 1x8x24 to about 5.5" so that it plus the 1x12x24 can be useded together as the box bottom.

5) biscut (screw, or glue, or dowel) the pieces together like this (with the 18" side pieces the only piece seen from the ends.

------24--------

18 18

------24--------

With the bottom inside the sides and front and back.

6) glue the to 25.625" pieces together to form a wide board for the top.

7) rip top to 18" wide. This should totally cover the top

8) Attach top to box with 110* hidden hinges (or any hinge you like)

NOTE: One of my boxes used a 1x10 rather than a 1x12 to make a slightly shorter box. All other dimensions were kept the same.

I also put felt pads on the bottom of my boxes so I can slide them around on my hardwood floors.

If you have any questions (or need more pictures) please let me know.

Thanks man!!!!

I'll be building one of these (maybe two) for my newly created and growing collection..

But I got a quick question.. :) The 3 cuts you have on the 1x12x10 come up to a 1x12x12 board.. :)

maybe my math is wrong

83 lbs of HS stuff.....is that too much?

 You can never have to much heroscape stuff.

My brother uses Ziplock bags for each army. He also uses different bags for the castle and each terrain. He stores it all in a BIG oversized bag so he can carry it around.

I am about to buy a small Plastic Cabinet to keep everything in. They have them at WalMart and you can keep up to 15 MS, and the cabinet only weighs about 6 lbs !
