I looked on Virtualscape on day, and saw a 'play' pull down menu. In it was the option to Create, Join, or Watch a game.

Has anyone tried this? Does it work?

In short, no it doesn't.

In long, Zzzzz tried to get a response from Hasbro concerning the potential legal issues of developing an online game, and couldn't get a response, so he discontinued development of the online game feature.

I don't think there would be any legal issues. Look at the example of Apprentice for playing Magic the Gathering online.

I've been playing that since it was first developed and haven't seen/heard of any legal issues brought up by Wizards of the Coast

But, if you were putting every free moment you had into a project, you probably would want to make sure that the copyright police weren't going to show up at your door. The folks that made that probably got WotC's blessing first.

Thanks TOG to give my answer. I couldn't said it better. You said exactly what I think. I will remove the menu item for game in next release.
I'm sorry to don't implement this feature.
Happy new year to everyone.

Makes sense, I never really thought of it that way I guess...

I know that D&D Miniatures gets a lot of play on Vassal and Wizards of the Coast which is a Hasbro company doesn't have problems with it. I doubt there would be much difference in this case. I think that as long as it doesn't take money away from the company they wouldn't mind. In fact it could help promote the game allowing people to find others to play online.

I'm agree with you and this is why I don't understand why Hasbro doesn't give me authorisation.

The issue may be that Hasbro doesn't want to give you permission or authorization, because then you or others might feel its "Official Hasbro". It might just be a technicality. If they say "Yes, you can!" Then it's almost an endorsement, but if they say "No!" it makes them look bad. They may just be taking the looking-the-other-way approach. Not endorsing or condemning it. As long as you make it very clear that it's a Hasbro product, and you just programmed it in, you shouldn't have a problem. Just don't sell it.

I could be wrong, but pretty sure you could even if they were to say no as long as no money is being made on it. They may not have answered simply because they don't have enough information. If they thought you were asking if you could make a product to sell, they the answer may be no, whereas if it is a free thing offered out of the goodness of your heart, then its all good.

Games Workshop (yeah, I know, its Games Workshop) sent cease and desist letters to folk who were using Vassal for LOTR TMG and other games to which they own the rights. I'd say caution here is justified.

Also, Hasbro and Mattel went after Scrabulous, a Scrabble-like game on Facebook, and asked it to be removed. Online games are definitely a place to tread lightly.

It's quite likely that Hasbro didn't respond because anything they agreed to now would only be relevent for a couple of months.

With the news that the game is being taken over by WoC in the next couple of months, and they already allow online versions of D&D & Magic, the time is right to pursue the idea again.
