CHAPTER 1: A NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE
He trudged slowly through the snow, wind slashing at his cheeks, his black hair blowing in whisps as he searched. He brushed it out of his eyes and pulled down his goggles, hoping that the frost was now off of the lenses. He pressed a button, activating the thermal imagery. He had to find her.
He glanced out over the lake, the vast, frozen over lake.
And then he saw her.
Her small body came out as a bright orange and red over the vast purple that was the lake. He turned off the thermal imagery and cautiously approached the lake.
She hadn't come home yet. And it was only going to get colder.
The chilled winds of this planet, Anarcitor, blew harder and harder as the day progressed, making it colder. He had to get his sister home. Otherwise he, and she, would die out here. And, most unfortunately, they were miles from home.
He took one step, and then another. Something in the corner of his eye blared, and he heard an explosion. He slipped, and scrambled as his body weight smacked into the ice. Several hairline cracks emerged from beneath him. He crawled carefully away, and then stepped to his feet.
"What was that?" he said out loud. He shrugged and moved farther out onto the ice, moving cautiously.
Soon he could see her in detail.
"Aren, come on! It's getting late! It'll be too cold to live soon!"
She didn't say anything.
"Aren, come on!"
She screamed, high pitched, blood curdling scream, finger pointed outward and past him.
He spun around, and he froze in place.
A huge, white cat with long sharp fangs stood three feet away, and atop the beast was a blue creature with a dome like head, and a sharp sword. His mouth was curled in a snarl.
And then the white cat pounced, and he ran, the creature smacking behind him. Once again he froze.
"Victor!" cried his sister. He turned around. Cracks as thick as his fists were flying under his feet, surrounding his sister.
The entire lake was breaking apart.
He ran as fast as he could to his sister, grabbing her and leaping just as the ice that had been beneath her shattered and sank beneath the water.
He picked her up and stepped carefully from glacier to glacier, balancing.
And then the white cat had leapt yet again, smacking into them.
Victor felt the icy cold of the water smacking into him, and then he could hardly breathe. Sharp blades of pain stabbed at him all over his body, and he could hear Aren's muffled screaming.
Victor's head was hurting terribly... he was going to black out.
And then he could see the white cat and the blue man and a white light above him... and an angel reached out for him just as his eyes closed, and the world went dark.
