View Full Version : Map Building in VS

I was watching Hero-X build a map the other day and the thing that struck me odd about his map building, is that in VS, he builds a large portion of his map from top to bottom. (Starting at the highest point and working down.) I can't do that... If I have to put pieces under another one, I totally just get lost.
So, I was curious if anyone else out there build like that? (If this has been a question before, then I apologize.)

I'm kind of another option not offered: either I build the perimeter and then fill in, or I work from the middle out.
Kind of explains why I tend towards maps that are either round or that have a very clear middle line. (Well, it'd be clear to the rest of you if I showed more of what I've made.)

I work bottom to top as I make it, because I'm used to building other people's maps from instructions. I usually have a grand scheme of what I want to do too. (I want rock starting zones, no grass showing anywhere, level 2 to be dominated by a road, level 3 to be lava, etc... for something like my latest map.)

I build bottom to top of course. :)

A little bit of all of the above?
I tend to put marker hexes in gernal areas were I want things... they usually get removed though. See the loose hexes below.
This is a good example of why we need a mountain wall set...

I have habit of building the larger pieces up top on the ground level, then placing the ground level over them, remove the upper level pieces (like bridges and such) and then building up from there, to make sure they all fit.

I voted for little of both.
Sometimes it starts with an idea for something in the middle or a specific land feature though. After that comes many revisions.

A mostly bit of bottom to top but I had maps that I made mostly top to bottom (eg. Lapaz Bridge).
Many times I select all same level tiles and Shift+PageUp to their designated height then I repeat process for the next level and Shift+PageUp till it's beneath the 1st one.

I usually do bottom to top but if I want to do complicated graded structures (like a realistic-ish mountain) or tunnels I need to go top to bottom.
