The map with the ruins in the center island and tree island in the back, and the map with the orcs on one side and omnicron snipers on the other with all the green hexes and trees in the middle are my favorites. These maps look like they would be a lot of fun to play on as well. Do you know how many sets you used on each of those? Thanks for sharing all the great photos and designs.
And of course, you have to start out with your high tower! Hilarious!

You terrain specialists just blow me away.
Teamski, were you the original 'tower' guy? I remember seeing the 'long road to hell' or something like that in the early days.
And the island with the glaciers in the middle looks spectacular. It looks like the last receding bits of a huge glacier meltdown. The last forming wellspring will be found at that center point when the glaciers have all melted away. The coloring on the Tundras sets look real good.
Truly admirable work.

Hex,
I built up the tower and took that photo back in Nov 2004. Another member created a Landscape tower of 42 levels and dared somebody on the .net forum to build it. As you remember, back then, there was just the master set out, and most everybody only had 1 or 2 sets. Anyways, I built it, took the picture and the rest is history. It's been on BGG forever!
Thanks all for your nice comments. Believe it or not, the map that took the most sets was the hex castle map (the first one on my dining room table). That bugger took all 11 sets to do!! The photo doesn't show the elevation very well.....
A couple more shots from my gallery on HQ....

The island was an attempt to match Dragonslayer's awesome winter map he did for the GB miniseries (you know, the one with GB and Saylind). I found after I did mine that he had stepped his castle back to fit all of the pieces on it and then did the low angle shots to make it look like a solitary castle. I couldn't figure out how he did it until he showed everybody..... Genious.

I used 11 MS, 5xRTTFF, 4x of everything else!
The spiral staircase goes way back to 2004. On the old hs.net, a guy landscaped a 44 level tower and challenged anybody on the board to build it. Well, I like a challenge and it came out to 44 levels exactly, hehehe....

Here's another map featuring and entrance to an underground lair. OK, corny, but it sounds cool. While I thought that this map would be unplayable, I found that it could be. I had tons of pieces left over and I could of created a huge catacomb on the back side of the map. That would really give that true D&D look!

That is an incredible underground cave entrance! So thematic! It's not corny at all.
Well, OK it's corny, but in a GOOD way, dude! :D
HS is about the classics, and that's done well.
What's with the ice near the end of the downhill stream, though?
Did anyone play on these beautiful maps, or are they going to waste where there isn't a Gameday close enough to play on them and appreciate their genius? :(

What's with the ice near the end of the downhill stream, though?
I think that is meant to be the bottom of the falls, and white water created or mist effect create by rushing water...? More for presentation, and not actual ice.
Regardless, that is a great set up. A diorama of sorts created with nothing but HS terrain. :D

Oh well..... Thanks for the complements! :D
I don't play most of the maps you see. I just get that creative thing going and I build. When I go to the comic shop, I don't have the 2-3 hours to build up a real thoughtful map.
I wish I had a group of established players like some of you out there have. I just teach the game to new players everytime I play.....

yeah, i really like this map a lot. i've been dreaming about doing something like this ever since i first saw the castle door. it looks really good, you totally pulled it off. this is definately my favorite map that wasn't built by me. the couple of castles you posted in the "mega-map"? thread were great too.
anyway, i totally dig it.
ps... thats a cute idea using the ice as waterfall mist! i might have to try that sometime.

could you try to explain how to make your nifty spiral staircase of doom? I attempted to include one in my newest map (see my map thread) but couldn't figure out how to work it. A pdf of the first like 4 or 5 levels would probably be the easiest.

There is a pdf that clearly shows how to stagger the 3/2 pieces and the 7 piece to create the stair, both single side or double-staired.
I don;t know where it is uploaded, but Teamski did a great job with it.

Heroscape as an art form! Very thematic, I am thinking of the Hobbit for some reason.
It would be awesome if the map was a gateway the inner chamber (separate map). I also love the way you have Morsbane standing in front of the door as if using magic to open it. It honestly leaves me wanting to see what lurks behind the closed door...

I'm happy I could help you in your quest to insanity, hehehe...
I think the "Soul of Valhalla" was done in 2004. The term "Mega map" has changed quite at bit (from 5 to 10 MS) since then. It sure looks bare without trees. The "Cave" with the stairs in the backround was supported by a book, my table being too small...

Unfortunately, I didn't. I quit landscaping maps that go over 10 levels. It's just too much of a pain in the caboose and most people don't emply that many sets to make it worthwhile. You could pretty much eye it if you need to. Thanks everybody for your support! :woot:

Taking this Castle idea and linking the front to one of Caravaggio's 3 hex wide bridge designs and a castle or similar on the other side. Would make a cool looking CTF type map.

Hey those maps are awsome. Quick question how do you keep the single hexes stable for the stair case that just seems to hang there as well as the single hex's under the overhang parts of the castle. I have tried a lot of different ways but i can't seem to find something stable enough to just have a freestanding hex attached. and watever your method is. Is it stable enough to do it with Double and tripple hex's thank.

Those stairs aren't "floating" but are actually a part of the tower. If you PM me your E-Mail address, I will send you the PDF for it. It's called a spiral tower. The stairs themselves are part of a 2 or 3 hex piece in the stack. They a well and truly anchored....

You have to use whatever pieces you have. For example sometimes, you end up using an end piece where an angled piece is supposed to be used. People looking at it wouldn't even know.
Remember, you can also use road/walkway pieces as wall sections. They work exremely well for measured heights. On the last castle, you will see them on the small castlated sections on top of the 2 towers. Roads allow an amazing amount of flexability that wall sections don't have due to their fixed height. They also allow you to stretch your resources. You can see that in this castle:

Wow, very cool. The first impression I got of it was of a castle in the clouds. Then of a ship flying above the clouds. The snow down below almost looks like clouds. I've had some thoughts about trying to do a flying castle/castle in the clouds... yours really approximates that.
Another thing that caught my eye was the battlements laying flat, propping the top section (right where Runa is standing). What sort of engineering is going on there, and how'd the idea occur to you?

Very, very impressed would be putting it mildly :)
From a gameplay perspective, how does one get in to this castle? I see the path winding around to the back, where it appears to peter out before even connecting with the multi-level look-out's perch (which also looks like it would be hard to get out of, given the official climbing rules). Is there a hidden corridor to the central courtyard, or is there something else I'm missing?

Thanks for your comments! And, no, you weren't missing anything. The map wasn't meant to play on, and the corridor going around the back steps up into nothing, hehehe.... I could of left an opening, but you wouldn't see it from the outside, so I didn't include one.
