View Full Version : Decimating your dice!

I dont care what any one says, decimating your dice works.
I have only done it twice but both times all the others started rolling much better.
After losing my 5th initiative roll in a row, I got tired of the beating I was taking so took the offending D20, lined up all my other die around him to watch and smashed him with a 30lb weight.
For the next 6 rounds I didn't lose initiative, plus I got much better attack and defense rolls.
Yes yes I agree its all psychological, but it sure as hell makes me feel better.
Plus from a losing game , 2 squads down on a 300 point battle, the tide turned after the execution and I won.
I'm not as bad as a friend of mine. After losing some major battles in his AD&D campaign, he lined up his dice, took out every 10th die, and smashed them in front of the others with a hammer.
He won his next major fight.

It's not all psychological. There's also "regression to the mean." If you roll a 1 on your D20, then slaughter a chicken for luck, chances are that your next roll will be higher.
There's certainly something psychological going on though ;)

I found that throwing the dice at the wall before rolling increased my luck, of course you can do like my brother and throw the dice at the fiqure you are attacking. "one hit kills everytime" :D

Decimating means to reduce by 1/10th (learned me that by watching meself some Monk) maybe devastating or destroying is the ledge your grasping for.

 I don't have enough dice to do that.

If you have enough D20's, I usually just switch mine out with another and set the "foul one" aside. After a few days I just throw it back in the bag with the others and hope the next time that die is used, it won't be so unlucky.

Are you suggesting that we just flip a coin to determine initiative? Lame!

That may not work, especially when thr +8 initiative glyph is in play.
"My heads +8 is better than your tails!"
Sounds corny.

once, my opponent rolled "2"
I exulted: "a-HA!"

lol gabbi that was bad :)
Decimating is when romans took a unit that had run away or fought badly, lined up the men, and every 10th man was killed.

I knew someone that did that with a D20 while playing D&D. The rest of us thought it was hysterical.

Whenever I roll extrememly poorly, I put my dice in the freezer for a while. I got really mad at them last game, so they've been in the freezer since monday night (it is currently thursday night).

Some dice are just mishapen.. and if you smash them everytime you consistantly roll a 1, chances are eventually you will nail the offender! :) We have two cursed d20's in our group. We marked the 1 with a black marker so we know not to use it.. one actually has a ridge on the 10 you can feel with your finger causing it to stall there (opposite side of 1.)

Some of the stuff in this thread is just crazy, but hilarious. I play a lot of D&D, and when I find myself hit with a stroke of bad rolling luck I usually try to change up the way I'm rolling the dice. By that I mean, I try to change my hand movements to have the dice come out of my hand differently, hopefully to pull me out of my slump. I've also been known to throw a few dice across the room after failing on some really important rolls...comes with the territory!
