What do you all think the next big thing will be? Gencon is coming up, and we have been told of a "big announcement."

Hmmm.....what is it?

NOTE:
If you think it will be siege weapons, just vote for the new castles option...for some reason the poll won't let me edit it.

Hasbro will be transfering all Heroscape related creative control to Wizards of the Coast.

That's the first thing I thought when I heard there was going to be "BIG NEWS".

Hmmm....I had to take a few seconds to think about this....

I doubt they would be tying heroscape into another new license since they havn't released the marvel scape yet, so that ruled out a few choices for me.

Pirate ships would be cool....but that would be surprising to me if that was the big news.

My thoughts were...maybe there will be a new master set coming out?
or maybe heroscape will go hollywood....with an animated tv show??
(why not...stranger things have happened).

those are my random thoughts....can't wait for the official big news.

I voted for the new terrain option. Here's why...

There hasn't been a TRU exclusive yet this year. Perhaps this year's lava set is something like Jungle or Swamp or whatever.

Craig mentioned that his favorite terrain hadn't been released yet. We've already seen this year's large terrain pack in the form of tundra. Last year we got one big set (RttFF) and one small set (HLD). This year will be the same.

Terrain: Any item that is within the confines of stated playing area that is used to represent buildings, trees, rocks, hills, mountains, swamps, lakes, rivers, tundra, gullies, creeks, plains, grass, ruins, statues, bulwarks, fences, cultivated farmland, fjords, walls, towers, gates, doors, warmadillos (just seeing if you are still reading) or any combination of above listed items.

What about the fortress door, Newb? Is a destructable object considered terrain? Just thinking about the warmadillo comment...when Sudema turns someone into stone they should remain on the board and become terrain. That's a good house rule...just paint the figure to look like stone so you won't forget (I suggest spray paint so play won't be halted too much).

Chose 'new castle types' - I think (hope :) ) they develop the castle line, though I don't know that they will - it is kind of limiting in the 'battle of all time' sense.

But they just seem like fun, both to build and play.

I think it is either Utgar's Castle, to hit (online) stores around Gencon 2007, the unreleased terrain (not castle in my opinion), or the allsurprising "other".

Pirates wouldn't be very big news in my book, but the ships would. I don't think that this is very likely, however.

I'll call Star Wars my darkhorse. It could happen, but I don't think that it is going to happen this soon after Marvel. Really, Marvel is just this years "shelf" at this point. We have a price, SKU, release rough date, and a whole lot of qualitative data, but it is still just fuel for speculation until we have some quantitative data.

I don't think castle/wave 5 for sale is really in the spirit of "big news". I don't think Wave 6 teasers will be there either.

GI Joe and Transformers are possibilities, but only after SW. I think SW is the bigger franchise for the next license. Terrain and characters are more universally appealing than either of these would be.

Swamp, could be the terrain, but I'm not sure. I'm not really sold on swamp terrain, so I could just be biased.

Generals...hmmmm...I'm not sure on this one. I can see it happening. It is marketed for the inner 8 year old in all of us. I think that generals would be juvenile in some sense, so I can see this happening. At the same time, the 8 to 12 year old thing is in many ways a marketing only frame of mind. How many 8 to 12's are going to go to Gencon looking for the big HS news? Not the context I'm thinking of, so I say no to generals.

Go ahead and vote for the Castle category, if you think siege weapons will show up....I tweaked the name.

I voted for the new terrain option. Here's why...

Craig mentioned that his favorite terrain hadn't been released yet. We've already seen this year's large terrain pack in the form of tundra. Last year we got one big set (RttFF) and one small set (HLD). This year will be the same.

I thought castles were this year's big terrain set, and tundra was the small one?

Anyway....seems doubtful to me that TRU would want another exclusive...they have shelves CLOGGED with last year's lava.

Harry Potter.

Sadly, Mattel owns the Harry Potter toy license. Lego has a license too, but I don't think Hasbro has anything going on with the bespectacled wizard. Sigh...I would like some Dementors though.

I wondered if a HS interactive game of some sort, for Nintendo DS or such, could be the big news, but then I reasoned that such a thing would likely not be shown at Gencon, but would have been mentioned at e3.

Only I really just said Harry Potter because that damned kid is on every other product in existence. Hell, I drive a Harry Potter car. I mean, it doesn't have Harry Potter actually on it anywhere, but it's poorly-made and unreliable, so I figured it was part of the Harry Potter merchandising.

HeroScape: The Movie :)

You may be onto something. There are all those atrocious Barbie CG movies that keep coming out. There are Bionicles movies. Maybe there is a HS CG movie that is in the works. I'm sure if it was something along these lines it could have flown under the radar this long. If the target market IS 8-12 year olds, this makes some decent sense. Who knows, it could even be good. Mainframe, the company that does the Barbie drivel, actually has some good stuff to their name. It could be good, but I still don't think this is what was meant when he said "big news".

Of course, he could have been misquoted. He could have said "big nudes" referring to the HS stuff that actually is marketed to adults. Jotun and Krug's red light district honeys.

I voted G.I. Joe and transformers, mostly because HASBRO has the IP (Intellectual Property) for the line, would have to pay no liscensing costs and can take advantage of the visibility of the new sigma six line.

I also suspect that WOTC will be taking over the future develpment of the line in terms of promotion and tournament support.

I sincerely doubt that STar Wars will be announced this year as they are already developing one liscensed product and it does not make much sense since they are already producing a Star Wars minatures game (WOTC)

just my two cents....

Best regards

I'm the opposite. I like terrain expansions every "point five" wave, but I'm all about the figures. That's the excitement for me. Castles are interesting and look cool and all, and I'll be buying some, but the Wave Five figures are what really get me going. I say bring on more figures.

As for terrain, I'd be down with an "Evil Castle" of some sort, swamp terrain and bogs or tarpits, quicksand, more ruins, and some deciduous trees. Maybe some large rocks too, like desert red rocks. So that's basically enough for three or four packs....Evil Castle, Desert, Swamp, Forest Ruins. After that I'm not sure what more I'd really like to see in new land.

It would be cool to be able to purchase wave 5 and castles at GenCon for those going, but they are supposedly shipping out in a few weeks anyways. That doesn't seem like BIG NEWS to me, especially for the thousands of HS fans not attending GenCon.

We are pretty much expecting to see wave 6 at GenCon 06, no? New waves are always being shown off at conventions so why would wave 6 being shown be considered big news? New waves are cool, but by no means big news at this point imo. For that reason wave 6 doesn't seem like BIG NEWS either.

Star Wars, Transformers, and G.I. Joes (btw G.I. Joe would make for a pretty dull HS game imo) all seem like possabilities, but I dunno. I just don't see them releasing another spin off when we don't even have the Marvelscape available yet. They don't even know how well a HS spin off would do. BIG NEWS? Possibly. Likely? I don't think so.

That leaves pirate ships, new terrain (swamps), new castle types, the Generals, and other. Pirate ships and Generals.. maybe. I think the more likely possability is new terrain/castles though. New terrain isn't near as common as figures coming out. New swamps or a Marro Hive would be incredible. The fact that Craig mentions his favorite terrain type isn't out yet furthers my suspicions. Obvilously some sort of new terrain is in development and/or coming out soon if Craig has played on it and it is his favorite...

honestly, who wouldn't want a David Lee Roth unique hero who spends the entire game trying to get a piece of Realin, weilding a blow dryer and a teasing comb? his special attack could be something like "Super Ego : DLR never ever notices anyone but himself, roll d20. if DLR rolls a 14 or higher, he thinks that the attacking figure is a mirror reflection of himself and takes all damge from attacking figure"

oh, hey, how about a John Bonham unique? armed with a bottle of whiskey and a couple of drumsticks.
special attack: choke on....well, never mind.
you got the idea.
something tells me that these will NOT be the next big thing.

Diamond Dave with the buttless pants would be a classic fig, but the game is marketed at 8-12 yada yada.

How about a Hendrix with a special that burns other people's guitars? :D

Well.....we got to see Wave Six (no stats yet of course) and the new flag bearers. Also got all Wave Five stats. Also got an exclusive. Wave Five was purchaseable for the blink of an eye, along with castles....some might have been held for tomorrow, but it's a gamble.

And a DWARF was in Wave Six!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey, I was thinking,
how about a Alice Cooper with his own head in his hands?
special power: give up rock for golf! if Alice rolls 15 or higher on 20 sider he quits the game to caddy for Terry Bradshaw or some other celebrity tournament side-show.

and then we get
Sebastian Bach!
special power: gilmore Girls dynamic attack! if sebastian is adjacent to an attacking figure and rolls more shields than they roll skulls, Sebastian delivers hokey 80s references until the other player gives up and quits.

we ain't even looked at the new expansions:
Bea Arthur and the Golden Girls (unique heroes), the cast from Star Trek Next Gen (unique squad), Micheal J. Fox and the guys from Back to the Future (commons) and also Huey Lewis and the News (commons).
hey, its hip to be square!
later!

What about a BA Barracus! With a backfire special - if he rolls a 19 or 20, he accidentally drinks the milk with the sleeping mixture inside and forfeits the round.

I was thinking more along the lines of:

Special Attack: Low on IQ, High on RPMS
If Sebastain Bach is adjacent to any figure, that figure goes insane due to Bas' lack of intelligence, arrogance and immature diva act and commits suicide immediately.

just you wait until the 221 year old David Coverdale from Whitesnake army hits......
David Coverdale / Vydar
(Vydar has given David special devices to keep him alive all of this time, tech rules!)
special power: Marry washed up dancer: David rolls d 20, if 10 or below, David marries skanky out-of-work stripper-type and gets her to do splits on the hoods of Jaguar XJS cars. chick goes on after divorce to become a drunken sod, and she beats husband with italian shoes. David takes 1 wound marker for bad decision. this can only be used once per game.

I don't care who you are, thats funny right there.

sorry guys, if you want you can have your thread back, I will stop.

At the time.....Tawny Kitane was FINE. That's a bad decision I could live with minus the marriage/skanky out of work stripper part.

yes, you are correct Noodles.
tawny was smokin' hot, but come on. did you see her lose her addled mind on "the surreal life"? that was awesome TV, my friend.
now-a-days I am thinking more along the lines of......well, I don't know.
for Skank-a-tude, you can't beat Paris Hilton with a stick.
for Heat, I still love the new Mrs. Kid Rock.
those would still be some awesome army figures.

now, let us see how we can wrangle someone into giving all who attend NCScapefest '06 a Sir Hawthorne!

Hasbro will be transfering all Heroscape related creative control to Wizards of the Coast.

That's the first thing I thought when I heard there was going to be "BIG NEWS".
