I'm wondering what your guys' thoughts of the scariest video game is in your own opinion.

Mine would hands down be FEAR for Xbox360. This game has every little thing to freak you out, from shadow things popping out from the dark to creepy, pale, little girls.

So what do you guys think is the creepiest, scariest, or just plain hard to play in the dark game.

I don't know about all the new games and I don't play scary games that often, but Resident Evil is the first game that really scared me.

I've never played it, but from what I've read Silent Hill is supposed to be the truly shivers-down-the-spine, creep-you-out-of-your-skin video game of all time.

You know even little events that occur in a suttle video game can freak me out, like the first time I played Legend of Zelda OoT when the Redeads first stared you down and the screen froze but they they kept moving was seriously probably one of the more frightening experiences of my life.

Gears of War, it's not scary for me and many other people but if you're squimish it's your worst nightmare...

Same here. That was pretty freaky. I'm playing through Resident Evil 4 right now. That has it's moments. Bioshock gets on my nerves as well.

Bioshock can get it's cheap scares. RE4 is good scare as well.

Oh yeah Bioshock, I played through like 30 minutes of the game (at a friend's house), and just thinking WTF Mr. Bubbles is disturbs me. (I think that's what the little girl called him)

You think FEAR was creepy? I watched about 20 minutes of gameplay for Project Origins (aka FEAR 2) and it scared the hell out of me! I'm also going to have to put a vote down for Silent Hill - those games are about as scary as games can get!

I loved RE4, but I didn't get scared, save for m panic on the first Garrador when it bursted through the wall. 8 times through the game and I still want to wet myself.

I'll also throw out a wild card and say the part in FFVII after Jenova escapes and you're following the blood trails all through the Shinra builind. I don't know why, but it just freaked me out.

Silent Hill. Some of the hallways look like you are in an organ (No. Not the piano.) The nurse creatures have very wierd faces. Pyramid Head rapes a living mannequin. It is mostly like, "Oh my God, how...why...wait..is that....HOLY CRAP!". Other times it's just "HOLY CR--".

The wierd things that spew acid out of their stomachs frighten me, and almost all of the creatures look like they were in the middle of a serious operation, but then they just got up. I'll post a link to a list that describes all of the monsters, and what they mean metaphorically.

Silent Hill 4 creeped me out, and Doom 3 - rise of evil or something. For both games I thought the atmosphere created by the lighting effects, coupled with the sound design, worked great to create some really intense moments. Of course, just some of the imagery in the Silent Hill games are creepy, and I don't creep out that often.

I havnt found any creepy 360 games yet...still looking.

I've played almost all of the scary games to date, and by far the scariest is Silent Hill. I remember in one Silent Hill game there was this one room that had a horrific background sound. Whenever my buddy and I played that game we made extra effort to go around that room. Resident Evil 2 was good at scaring the crap outta me especially in the first couple of parts.

The resident evil series probably has the best overall scare moments. The best of the series are 2, 3, and 4. Everything else in the series can more or less be ignored if you’re not a super fan and you won’t be missing out. However each of these games does something different from the rest and have very good mood and theme.

Be warned however the only one with actual good game play controls is Resident Evil 4 which has totally revitalized a series that was growing a bit weak. Silent Hill 1 for its time was amazing but it hasn’t aged all that well and every single sequel it has makes me bored and sad. I loathe them but still have a special place in my heart for the original Silent Hill. Doom III and Doom III: Resurrection of Evil are also quite scary and great.

I have played the silent hills and resident evils of the world, but not really jump out of my seat scary.

The only game that has ever "creeped" me out was "The Suffering". The sound of the knive handed demons walking across the ceiling and walls bothered me, or when a beast would jump out of no-where. The thing that bothered me the most where the "voices" telling you to "do it" "kill em", or "don't do it, have a heart" type stuff. Then the little girls that turned into witches made me pee.

Very scary game for me for whatever reason, the others not so bad.

Silent Hill used to really creep me out, but it's all atmosphere. As dark and claustrophobic as the game is, the enemies really aren't much of a threat to you. They're creepy and weird, but they're mostly harmless, and never really get the jump on you. The game is scary because you feel like something might leap out of the fog and get you. The game stops being scary as soon as you realize, nothing actually will.

Resident Evil still manages to scare me because things WILL get me. They may be cheap scares, but they work. RE2 still has the best scares of any game I know. The Licker in the interrogation room still gets me, but more than anything, it's Mr. X in the second round that terrifies. The game lets you get comfortable knowing that all you have to do is get out of the room to get away. Then Capcom throws a twist at you and he comes barreling through a wall to follow you.

Doom 3 was scary until I realized the enemies literally come from nowhere. Then it just became really lame.

yep, it was the first game to ever "creep" me out. I love the "genre" and they are all scary games and entertaining in their own right. I never really walked away "scared" or "creeped out" by them. The Suffering however just really got me though. It was messed up!! I would post more of the events that bothered me, but it would ruin it for anyone that has not played it.

The Suffering is a must play for anyone that likes "scary" games. The second one you can pass on.. but not the first one.

It is a mind-screw on top of being scary.

While probably not the scariest game ever, I just have to mention Aliens vs Predator 2. The Marine campaign played out exactly the way it was supposed to- the (mostly) unsuspecting Marine tromping around in the dark, eyes glued to the motion tracker, flashlight continuously checking the vents and ceilings, and dreading/loving the beepbeepbeep of a smartgun lock. I'd take a moment to check back in with reality while playing and realize my heart was pounding in my chest.

I've not played a fps with a better storyline to this day.

Nemesis was ok, but the whole game was more action oriented, so it didn't have quite the same effect. I thought 3 was the best of the Playstation Trilogy as far as gameplay, but it didn't have the story and scare factor of the previous two.

I'm going with BioShock for 360, or maybe Eternal Darkness for Gamecube.

Eternal Darkness had this player sanity meter that would drain and cuase freaky stuff to happen....sometimes monsters would appear, sometimes things would just look all crazy and bleedy, and other times your screen would simulate technical issues. So it was basically a mindfrak on top of being a creepy game. Good stuff.

Bioshock is just....eerie. The underwater city is dark and creepy and I don't like to go exploring there at night. Seriously. I only play it during the day now, which means it's going to take me a long time to get through the whole thing. I'm not ashamed to say the whole game kinda freaks me out.

Parasite Eve. An excellent game, one of my all-time favorites. It had a few moments that were pretty intense, but of these listed here, this one had the best overall storyline.

Silent Hill. Best atmosphere, by far. The story was good, and that creepy fog made you wonder WTF was lurking around out there. The school was awesome!

Resident Evil. Nothing else even comes close to being truly scary than the original Resident Evil. I think I was about 16 when this game came out, and I invited a friend over, and we played it all the way through. Other games may make you jump in your seat, or make you leery of turning the next corner...but Resident Evil did all that around EVERY corner. It's the only game that ever made me actually shout out loud from being scared! The part where those dogs jump through the hallway windows actually made my friend gag and vomit because it scared him so much.

Let's not forget the original X-Com UFO Defense! Officially listed as #5 in the top 10 scariest games of all time.

http://pc.ign.com/articles/742/742954p1.html

Sure, it's old and doesn't have high-definition gore on the screen, but it makes you cringe and hold your breath as aliens are creeping about in the dark, never knowing when the next one will emerge and slaughter your beloved squadies, making you cry out in anguish as they crumple into a bloody heap... good times, good times...

Also, one of the best games ever made, hands down. Classic!

I have to agree with the original resident evil for the PS1, was the scariest game I have ever played. It actually gave me nightmares of zombies chasing me around. Hoorray for keeping fantasy separate from reality. Great game though. This game did the best with atmosphere, camera angles, music, lighting, suprises, lack of ammo, and intensity.

I liked Parasite Eve alot, but I didnt think it was that scary. It had a great theme and atmosphere but most things just were not that heart stopping for me.

Another classic game and deserving of being in the top 10 greatest games ever made. They really need to remake that game.

The entire Fatal Frame series. You have nothing but a magic camera and your wits as a weapon, lots of atmospheric scares and sounds, things popping out of no were.

Forbidden Siren

Resident Evil Four- the only gripe I have is I do not like the controls

Call of Cthulhu : Dark Corners of the Earth

All the Silent Hills

The Suffering

Resident Evil 4 was a great game. I don't really think it was that scary though. Not a lot of cheap "something jumps out of the dark at you" jolts, and not a lot of deep horror elements. Just a lot of crazy villagers.

Anyone see the trailer for Resident Evil 5? It looks like it has great graphics, but the setting doesn't seem scary at all. It's just way too bright. The enemies in the preview didn't even look like zombies, and doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of a zombie game? RE:4 was one thing, seeing that all the villagers were not technically zombies, just people being attacked by parasites, but THIS! It looks like they're just mad!

Resident Evil 5 is set in Haiti I believe, and that's where the idea of zombies come from. I believe also that zombie is a term in voodoo and black magic. So look forward to this being some sort of brain control, mind washing or something of the sort. I like that Resident Evil is really tearing into the heart of zombie culture with this one. And even though the setting isn't half as dismal the intensity is going to sky rocket because of the number of enemies on the screen (and from what I've seen there will be many), tight spaces and with the help of your upgraded melee attacks some cut-throat hand to hand action.

Doom 3...of course. It wasn't a great game, but it did have a lot of fun shock-scare moments. That game was spooky just to watch people play...you never knew when something was just going to jump out and attack them. Which of course, is the very outdated shooter mechanic that made it not such a great game.

My top three...

1. Aliens Vs Predator - but only when playing as the marine. Relying on the motion tracker in the dark made for some very tense moments.

2. System Shock 2 - I remember hiding in the corner of a room, panicked, praying that the Many would pass me by.

3. Thief: The Dark Project - I've never played a game since where I've been afraid to move for up to 10-20 mins at a time. Still my favourite game ever.

How about in Metal Gear Solid when the ps ychic guy Mantis(?) shows your other saved games being deleted. He said " Ahhh Suikoden" and then the file shrunk and disappeared. Now that is scary. Luckily it wasn't real.

10 foot tall, double bladed-flaming-chainsaw maniac. You shoot him in the face like 5 times and he's still swinging that ****ing chainsaw around his head while running at you. Those are tears of terror.

Now that we got that life altering moment out of the way, lets move on to one of my childhood fears.

A haunted mansion, strange japanese folklore (really sadistic and bloody: human sacrifice etc.), eerie sounds, creaking floorboards... and who are you? A young japanese girl (or twins in part 2) with a supernatural camera that can trap ghosts when you take pictures of them!! Great stuff. Sent me flying off of the couch on some occasions. Had me screaming like a little girl myself on most. ;)
