Here's a little recap of how my day went today....
So today at work I was moving some new computers from one lab to another (thats basically the gist of my job, moving computers around) Anyways I lifted up the last one I needed for the new lab and put on the stack with the others. When I set it down I got this really sharp pain in my back that almost made me pass out it hurt so much. I tried to sit down but that didn't help, it hurt so much. So I made it to the floor and just layed there for a couple of minutes, hoping the pain would go away.
After about 15 mintues I tried to get up but couldn't lean forward enough to stand up because it hurt too much. I was literally chewing on my hat to keep from biting my tounge off, I was in so much pain. I finally crawled to the front of the room to get to one of the few computers that was hooked up and got to my knees (which hurt like hell) and emailed my bosses, telling them I had fallen and couldn't get up. They came up and tried to help me but finally we just decided to call 911. We had some laughs at my expense, such as taking me out back and shooting me, sending me to the glue factory afterwards, funny stuff.
The EMT's or Paramedic's whatever they are called today came up and got me. They took me to the hospital, where I met 2 nurses, a secretary and 2 doctors. All of them asking me the same questions over and over again. After about an hour they decided to give me some Morphine for the pain, a shot in the butt. When my girlfriend got there I still could not stand up it hurt so much, so they gave me some more drugs. This time through an IV. I got a steroid, muscle relaxer, 2 different types of pain killers and some anti-nauseous pills. Holy crap did I fell good after those drugs were in my system. I have never been high before but I can now imagine what it is like. I was all giddy and happy.
I got home about 3 hours ago and fell asleep from all the drugs they gave me. I just took a Vicodin for the pain and damn does this stuff work. I really hope this pain is nothing serious and will go away in a day or 2. :?
Anyways, that was my day, how was yours.

Jeez man! Take it easy on your back - a little too late, I know, but if you happen to do lifting again try and wear one of those reinforcement belts, huh?
Glad you're in happy lala land and not nearly-biting-your-tongue-off realm.

I finally crawled to the front of the room and got to my knees and emailed my bosses, telling them I had fallen and couldn't get up.:toast:
Good one!
But I hate to be the harbinger of doom here :reaper: , but good luck with that back the rest of your life.
I had the same feeling happen, once in a small way moving a bed in college, and then years later, just bending over to give the dog some food.
That second time, it gave way precisely as you describe, except noone else was home so I just crawled in front of the TV and vegged all day.
I couldn't do much for a couple days, cold packs or no (don't use heat) and my back's never been the same.
I see a chiropracter now (a GOOD one makes all the difference) and mostly am OK, just some stiffness from time to time.
But I'm guessin' you're gonna be one odd movement away from a lot of pain, for AWHILE.
Sorry to hear that, nether, seriously - you have my sympathy, man.

Sorry to hear that. I know how you feel...about the back pain and the drugs
My back went out when I was playing basketball a few months back...went up for a lay up, came down, and stayed down (I made the basket and won though :D ). Now whenever I play, I am cautious because I can feel the pain creeping back up on me.
The drug thing, I understand, cause the doc gave me some vicatin after stitching up my Heroscape customs' cut. I still have 1 pill left that I'm saving for a special occasion :toast:

Hey Nether, sorry to hear about the pain.
I'll echo a number of people here about be careful with your back for quite some time to come.
I'll also add that if you can get copies of any of the x-rays or scans they did, it will be helpful for future consults you will have. Especially to any Physical Therapist or good Chiropractor.
Many people may bag on chiropractors, but when you have one that knows what they are doing, their goal will be to see you as little as possible, not schedule weekly visits for a year. Adjustments to help stretch muscles that have cramped from the pain can be beneficial, as long as it is paired with supportive exercises.
I first threw out my back when I fell from a play structure around age 9. Recovered from that pretty well. Was thrown from a horse around age 13, that one took longer to recover. Since then I had a repetitive stress injury on my right shoulder, hyper-stretched a muscle. After 10 years of almost daily pain I went to my friends chiropractor for a sleep posture related lower back problem. Mentioned the shoulder, and danged if she didn't "fix" it.
No, I don't think this is a cure all, but I hope you take the suggestion.
Also, be careful of the "lifting" belts. They often encourage poor lifting behavior as people put their support onto the belt, then the next time you happen to lift something simple without the belt, out goes the back again.
I sure hope that the driving to gencon doesn't aggravate the pain. I'll buy you a drink there.
ps: Vicodin, good stuff. When I've had it (wisdom teeth and dog bite) I realized that it didn't really make the pain go away, I just didn't care about it anymore. :P

Echoing what has been said about taking care of yourself, nether, let me add a word of hope as well. I've had back pains on and off for thirty years, sometimes severe indeed. But, not because of doing anything different, I've been three years without any major back pain at all. It just got better. I hope (and pray) that yours gets better and stays that way too.

My back went out when I was playing basketball a few months back...went up for a lay up, came down, and stayed down...
Whoa... what is it with back injuries and basketball? Back in 1997, I was playing ball and went up to dunk on a fast break. I slammed it with two hands and should have let go. My defender running trail ran right underneath me, adding more momentum to my legs already swinging forward. His body also carried me forward forcing me to let go of the rim. I basically did a half flip and landed on the back of my upper torso, wrenching my neck and back. It didn't help that I tried to correct my fall in midair as I was plummeting to the hardwood, thus making the fall worse.
Long story short (too late) I had to take about three months off of doing anything remotely physical, and then a years worth of physical therapy. And I still have minor back pain now and then.
The moral of the story? Nether, do what ever you can to make sure to follow whatever it is the doctors tell you to do. It's all about maintenance and adhering to regime.
Sorry to hear about your back...

This is *so* true. (Sorry to hijack the thread briefly, nether.)
It was, not long ago, that I was telling my grandkids a bed-time mystery story, borrowing heavily from Agatha Christi, and had someone kill another person by hitting him (in this case) in the head with a telephone. My grand-daughter looked at her cell and said, "How would that ever kill anyone?"

Yeah, that was ridiculous. I mean, 3 weeks later I could walk without much pain... but that was about it. They didn't want me lifting anything, running, or bending. I can't even begin to explain how bored I was on certain days. TV, movies, and video games get old REAL quick. Especially when all your friends want to play ball during their free time.

Hey Nether, glad to hear you're doing ok with the meds. I hope you're able to give your back a good long rest before you have to move any other heavy stuff.
Oh and be careful with those painkillers: its easy to get addicted to some of them if your body grows dependent on them.

I am doing much better today than yesterday, I was actually able to get up and walk around a bit. The doctor told me to take it easy for a few days and when I do get up, to sit with PERFECT posture. I never realized how much I slouched until I had to sit with good posture. Man, its rough.
Time to try and get some sleep.

So this sucks. Yesterday I was feeling pretty okay. This morning I woke up and could not get out of bed. It took me over an hour to muster up the strength to ignore the pain just to sit up in bed.
I had to call the Workman's Comp office today to find out what they need me to do so I can get paid for missing work. Apparently they need me to go get some follow up treatment/check-up. I should have gone the other day but I was feeling fine and plannd on getting back to work today. I am going to go to the clinic on Monday, I hope they don't screw me over for waiting so long. Most of it has to do with the fact that my only mode of transportation is my motorcycle, which I can't ride because of my back. Oogiezone is at work all day and I am doped up on Vicodin and can't drive, even if she could get home I would have to take her to work and then go to the clinic myself....ugh this is so frustrating!!!
I really hate missing work, its crunch-time there. Only a few weeks before classes start back up again and there is a crap load of stuff for me to do, most of it is lifting! Which I will NOT be doing anytime soon...god this sucks.
Sorry, I just needed to vent. I thought I was doing better! I must have twisted my back all weird while I was sleeping or something...
You can ignore my whining and moaning, just needed to get these things off my chest so I could stop thinking about them.

I talked to the Workman's Comp lady today and she said I need to go in for a follow-up check-up, which I can't get to today and the clinic I am supposed to go to is only open M-F so I have to go Monday. Hopefully that is okay.

you follow everey possible appoitnement suggestion, and even make some up if you need to.
wait a minute - what kind of treatment did you get?
Doctors can't really help backs, since they deal in drugs and surgery, neither of which is very helpful in your case (long term).
Chiropracters or physical therapists are MUCH better equipped and experienced to handle this kind of injury, IMO.

OK I scare myself when ever I agree with Reaps but he's right on this one.
When my car was totaled I was on the Vic and muscle relaxers for 10 days.
After that it was PT and traction 3 times a week for 6 weeks. I had this hot little 24 yo gal who when she leaned up against me......I mean what I am trying to say is get the insurance comp to pay up for this. The Traction, and electro stimulation actually helped a lot.

At the ER, no. The doctor shot me up with some painkillers, gave me some perscriptions and told me to see my family physician in a few days if the pain persisted. I don't have a physician, and was looking into places to go when my boss emailed me all the specifics of the workman's comp stuff. She filed all the paperwork yesterday.
The Workman's Comp place called me today and told me to go to a clinic today, unfortunately I can't make it today, so Monday, I go and hopefully they can tell me wtf is wrong with me.

You should make sure that someone gets xrays to make sure that you don't have a disc problem occurring. A good friend of mine was helping some people move a floor safe, and at one point part of the support for it slipped and wrenched my friends back. He felt better after a few days, didn't go see anyone about it.
About a year later, he was leaning over to look at his fish tank, when he stood up, his disc ruptured. He was 33-34 at the time. Best guess is that his disc had been damaged by the safe, and slowly going, with little pain. He's ok now, with much therapy the vertebrate have nestled together nicely and will fuse themselves over time. There really just isn't much to do about backs. :(
Don't worry, if you follow direction, you'll be fine, just more cautious.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but those things aren't all they're cracked up to be. I've heard of studies where the only significant difference between the back belt group and the control group in weight lifting activities is that the belt group would lift faster. Seems like a false sense of security to me, but used with caution and proper posture these things are a good idea, IMO.
