Gen Con 2006 Promo?

I was wondering if anyone had any info on if Hasbro is going to have a Heroscape Promo at Gen Con this year. Last year the had the Glacial Rider. It was wondering if they were going to have a new one this year. Any news or info would be appreciated.

That, and having an exclusive fig and card available at a convention like GenCon shows that a company is behind their game and want to go out of their way to see the game grow and generate buzz.

Also, the buzz the fig generates is great exposure. The topic of Nerak is still being discussed today. And yes, some of the discussion of Nerak is negative. Regardless though, its still discussion.

I am not a fan of exclusives, but they don't really bother me and its part of the business.

Nerak is the only thing keeping me from having a complete collection, but he isn't worth the prices I have seen on ebay so I will go without.

There was an eBay charity auction set up by several 'Scapers. Then HQ members were encouraged to send HS items to add to the auction to help boost it's attractiveness to be able to get as much money as possible to send to a Katrina Relief fund. GBob hooked up the auction with a Nerak, and many other members helped out as well. 100% of the earnings were given to the Fund. While the amount wasn't much, the effort and heart put into the auction was awesome, and those involved did what they could with the resources they had. I'm not sure the exact amount, but the auction raised a few hundred dollars.

I don't think jcb was around at the HQ, yet when this occurred, but I'm a little disappointed that he would post something like this w/out: 1. Investigating what is being talked about or 2. Thinking this through to a rational conclusion.

IIRC, our members raised about $300 - $400 that was donated to The Red Cross and a Humane Society that were both working to assist victims of the flood (man and beast).

I guess I just didn't notice it at HQ....there were a lot of threads there I overlooked if they weren't in the forums I was searching through. I rarely if ever read the main pages of these sites, as it's just one more page to click through most of the time...I bookmark the forums.

What's my interest? A lot of people put a lot of faith in that auction. Frankly, to see someone belittle it or someone's donation to it is not something that I care to see written, under any circumstances: whether through intention or ignorance. :evil:

On a more positive note, has anyone considered the possibility of two GC exclusives for next year? Mavelscape and Heroscape! :pray:

I don't mind the notion of exclusives at all, especially repaints of (relatively, given the state of HS distribution) easily obtained figures (i.e. Nerak & EOV.) As long as the units are well costed and fun/useful to play, I welcome any 'official' additions.

Got Nerak at the much maligned Toys 'r' Us promo, but still use stand-ins for the EOV. In fact, we use stand-ins for 'horde' armies, too - we have only 2 squads of 4th, so use an amalgam of squad figures to amass the massive 4th Mass armies a la Lilwis, same for Viper and Orc hordes, etc.

Stats of the figures are more important to us than actually having the figure itself. (All the more reason I'm disappointed that the stats for TV haven't been released/exposed yet :( )

I don't understand how you could have missed the line in my post about me not usually checking the front page, so we're even. :-)

I also did not know that HQ was still around to be searched....not everyone is particularly computer savvy, champ. Google is not the first thing I think of when I want info on a topic...I guess I'm the only one. Even when we were all on HQ, if I saw a forum topic about Katrina I likely just skimmed on down the list, thinking it was some sort of current events thing. That's not belittliing you, just explaining how I missed it. If you're just looking for info on new releases and such, you're not going to be focusing on that sort of thing.

Getting one for the price of GenCon isn't for everyone and eBay is actually affordable if the only reason you are flying out to Indy is to get a promo figure. :P

I myself have been to GenCon. It's a lot of fun and I'm sorry to miss it this year. If I don't get a promo figure right away, oh well. I got a ton of free Neraks so I'm good. I spread the love with my extras and I have faith that others here will do the same. If I don't get the love no biggie. eBay is like a mistress...you don't want to admit your love for her, but you won't turn it down in secret. 8)

Assuming there is going to be another GC excl your best bet is to do this. Send someone ca$h up front right now. They might be able to buy one on the floor before it hits Ebay. There are lots of savvy folks who will get what ever they can from GC and then slap 'em up on EBay. If they can make a fast sale for some ca$h on the spot they will take it. (I've seen it happen)

Last year I was able to offer other swag in trade for some extras that I gave to my buddies. I knew what I had was worth something but it meant nothing to me.

The GC folks do a pretty good job of punching your badge so they know you already have the excl.

Think about it. All you have to do is grab the item, put it safely in a shipping container of some sort, and send it to me. Your postage will be only a temporay expense on your part, as I will include a money order refunding it all.

This Hex isn't going to be able to attend, unfortunately. However, I am going to be attending the SoCal GenCon in November (as is Oog), and can only hope that the exclusive fig will find its way there... unlike last year.

There are still a surprising number of folks that don't have EOVs and may want them, especially if all it costs them is the trade (no eBay bidding).

I likely am. But there is a chance that will fall through due to some current travel-related difficulties.

And even when I go, it may be hard for me to slip away long enough to wait in line for an exclusive. I'll do it if I have the time or just feel like taking a slightly questionably long bathroom/coffee/cigarette/whatever break, but I don't know if I'll be able to get away with it.

If anyone wants to come swap badges with me for a while and wait in line again to get a second figure (or just grab two if they allow that), I'll pay you a little something for your time and try to get you some food and drink....the booth I'm working is planning on having free snacks and cold drinks provided for the staff. I'll give you some or maybe all of my share and just buy whatever I want to eat on my own.

I'd also be willing to trade EOV's on the spot, or give you a full game from Your Move Games, the company I will represent. You can look them up at their website and then read reviews on BGG...their games are pretty cool. I'll also plan to bring some Clout demo kits and boosters to the con, so if you're a Clout fan that could be an option.

This Hex isn't going to be able to attend, unfortunately. However, I am going to be attending the SoCal GenCon in November (as is Oog), and can only hope that the exclusive fig will find its way there... unlike last year. That's a great idea. I'd forgotten about the possibility of GenCon SoCal. (maybe because I don;t hold out too much hope for Hasbro marketing to consider any gaming Con other than one to be "worthy" of them providing any support to...) :evil:

If you are able to make it, Oog and myself are going to attend (as mentioned). AllSkulls said he was going to try, but last I talked to him he thought he'd be able to go as well.

Slipping in early rocks. My nickname used to be "Ghost Ninja" when I worked tech expos a couple years back. I'd be on the show floor in all the prime spots, securing the free goods before regular folks even opened the doors or other workers had gotten their badges pinned on.

It's all about figuring out where the elevators come out. So many convention centers (Toronto is a prime example) have unguarded elevators that emerge on the show floor, thereby bypassing all security. In most centers, once you're on the floor, no one will question anything you do. They only police the actual act of entering.

Many cons also have stickers for workers, that you can get by asking the right people, without any promise or intent to do work....just by asking. That's less common nowadays, but some small cons still do it.

Those are some of the easier ways....can't give away the truly great ones.

So ya I guess if you were desperate to grab some little kid and get his "nerak 2006" you could do it that way.

Personally I don't understand all the hype. I go to GC for the games not some repaint.

I think the hype is because its possibly a new fig. I'd get excited over any new fig, no matter where they sold it. If I had to send in the UPC codes off 20 boxes of Frosted Flakes to get an exclusive HS figure, you'd better believe I'd be meeting Tony the tiger for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I prefer it being a repaint/remold, as I think new sculpts should be available to everyone. I think repaints are fine so long as they add something to the game. I liked the ablities of Nerak and the EOVs....both of them have their little niches, and I don't think they look bad on the field with others of their theme. I look forward to seeing what, if anything, the team has in store this year. Fingers crossed for Evil Raelin or a Zettian Guards variant.....those would be my two most wanted repaints. An Evil Raelin would tie in nicely to the comic and be a good poster girl, while also giving the Minions another crappy-bonding option. A Zettian repaint would give DW9K another ranged boost option, and I just have a soft spot for the little guys and think lots of cool thematic variants could be made.

I'd also be on board for a repainted/remolded Dumutef. Or if Hasbro wants to be really cheap, a new glyph or set of glyphs would be awesome.

I get excited about freebies.....sure I'll game if I have the time, but I also looooove getting game stuff for free. Nothing sells a game to me like a free mini-demo kit or some other means of having the pieces in your hand. And nothing makes me say "Wow, what an awesome company." like giving me new parts for a game I like.

Last year I got a FULL set of Nadvia Drapt and the COOLIST looking pair of Fuzzy Catan Dice for my car. the best was those came from Nokia where they had a Settlers game on a cell phone! No Joke.

Of course I won't just go up and ask for booth swag....trust me, I know the drill. I have given out and received more swag than I know what to do with over the years. The secret to getting choice swag is to feign interest and loiter until you get to demo, then just kind of hang around a bit and act a little surprised when they offer you something to take with you. Then thank them, a lot. Then come back later and tell them how great the swag was and thank them again.....some folks will then give you more, or better, swag at that point. Also, hit booths up late on the last day....it's always better to give crap away than ship it home. I got an entire XBOX and a bunch of games that way once. I was working a show and they just flat out gave me the XBOX they had been using for show demos....it was new on the first day and thus even after two or three days of folks playing it it still had that new box smell.
