hextr1p had posted this picture from G4TV on another thread (http://heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=1327&highlight=), but I thought it deserved a thread of its own (at least for a little while) - quite possible I've missed it, but I hadn't seen a picture of the castle climbing ladders in action ("what's that drone doing floating in mid-air" was my initial thought  ) Looking forward to the posting of the castle rules by oogie/allskulls...

That's an Aubrien Archer! I wonder how we're going to verify LOS from angles like that?

I have small periscope type devices to get into tight places like that.

okay, no, i am having a difficult time conceiving the concept of this periscope device. mind explaining? pics would help too

Here's an image of the two I have. They're the blue and yellow devices. You hold one end behind the figures head and you put your eye up to the other end.

Inside the tube there are two angle mirrors to reflect the image up and over.

Here's an image from the internet of a toy periscope in use.

small key-chain laser pointer?

i use a key-chain laser pointer.

HEH: where did you get these periscopes? i can see how useful they can be with the future release castles etc

K/H, my bro-in-law gave me mine. He used to use the periscopes for MicroArmor and D&D. NOt for LOS but just to get down into the action and see how it looked. Then he discovered how fanatical I was about HS and pass them on to me.

:google: 'toy periscope' and check the online stores.

Now my question to you guys - besides the internet, where can I pick up a laser keychain pointer? I don't think we get that particular about LOS, but I have looked for them in the past and came up with nothing.

i got mine for 5 bucks at a flea market. I have been told WM sells them, as well as gas stations and such, but i have never seen them around. I would check the electronics department at WM/Target, maybe try RadioShack or something.

I've seen them at Radioshack before.

wow i never thought of using those things for LOS! I hate having to Kneel down into awkward positions for LOS!

That's an Aubrien Archer!

Thanks for the correction - I refuse to succumb to glasses, but at times there is no denying  The top of the bow looked like the top of a drone staff and I ignored the apparent discolorations

Anyway, time to check if allskulls posted yet :)

EDIT: I now know how a well-educated person would spell 'succomb'

I hadn't seen that picture yet, but I saw another one that showed them in action and I got pretty excited about the ladders. That is a genius design. I guess all the custom guys that haven't rebased now have some incentive.

I think I am going to have a lot of fun popping Orcs off the ladders with ranged units on the curtain wall. Siege scenarios should be really cool....

dammit... sometimes the simplest ideas just pass me by! Periscope? Lazer Key Chains? After all this time I have been struggling and craning my neck, bending and contorting my body into odd positions to get behind figures heads to verify that I can indeed see the top of my targets head or arm. No more... I just want to know how the heck I didnt think of either of those two ideas! Is old age setting in?

Call me a luddite or a fogey, but I verify LOS by just putting my eyeball behind the unit and looking. I call it "eyeballing it" and I think the term is catching on.

Silly me.

:2cents:
I think periscopes are a bit too much. I bet it would lead to more arguments, and more time spent checking out LOS

My preference for line of sight check is 'eyeballing it'
if that fails I use a 'friendly discussion'
if that fails I use a 'd20 decision' as per the manual.

I've never had to roll the d20 for an LOS debate, the discussion always solves it. Ususally the player that is currently winning caves.

Then again, maybe I'm just jealous

Don't forget that you can verify LoS the other direction as well. If any portion of the defending unit's target area can "see" the attackers green spot, you've got LoS. That laser pointer can go in both directions.

Mystyc, you beat me to it. I often check LOS that way, as our maps are on the floor most of the time. I'd rather pick whichever one is higher and look from that one to the lower one. If anyone has a problem with looking from the target because it isn't stated in the rules, they are showing the early signs of being a (cough) rule's lawyer.

Here's a question, once Krug gets through the door can he climb ladders?

Jandars_Hope
July 24th, 2006, 07:53 AM
I doubt it! The ladders look like they can only hold one-space based figures, but even then i think you might only be able to use small/medium figures because i don't see DW9K climbimg one of those things!

One thing that is worrying me is the sizes between the ladders rungs... sveral of my customs are on non-heroscape bases, which may be slightly thicker than or shorter in diameter than the official bases. I'm wondering if that would scupper their chances of ladder climbing...

Periscopes and Lasers...holy cow, that's awesome. :o :o I will have to pickup a few of those lasers. My neck is killing me from the wierd angles to check LOS. Don't know why I never thought of that either. :?

I can't wait for those castles either.

As for the large base figures not being able to use the ladders, I would imagine that characters like DW9K, Mimring or others in that size range wouldn't use ladders to get around anyway. I would expect that the ladders would be mainly for humanoid sized characters. I look at it this way; DW9K is like the armour in the military. You wouldn't have an M1A1 or a Bradley going up stairs to a battlement would you? That may be a loaded question....so after you're done chuckling...I suspect the answer would be no. Dragons can fly so stairs would be useless. The other characters would in theory be too heavy for stairs of the size. Oops there's the D&D in me.

Dental mirrors (http://www.widgetsupply.com/page/WS/CTGY/dental-mirror) -- cheap (the link has several for just under $2 each), and they take up less space in storage than a periscope.
