View Full Version : Are you playing HeroScape... one on one, multi players, etc?

I am curious to know how most of your games go. I know some people here play mostly one on one games (by preference and/or by lack of players). I play mostly game with 3 to 6 players, by choice (and chance). Some others seems to play mostly solo games. What is your average say, over the last two-three months?

I ask that out of curiosity but also because I find HeroScape to be quite different when played like chess, Stratego or checkers (one on one) compared to the board games way: many players around a table, with all that comes with it, the social aspect of it, the diplomacy, the noise, the small talk around the table, the possibility of alliances made/broken, a bit of poker in the eye when moving a figurine on the board, beer :toast: , food :hungry: , strategy discussion, etc.

And, one more question. Are your game events only that? You get together to play and then bye, bye? Or is it followed or preceded by a shared meal? etc.

I chose "A Good Mixture" since multiplayer is the one that gets mostly played but I do play a lot of solo HS just for kicks. When the group gets together we usually order food or have someone pickup food on the way over. We'll have one of the sports channels on the tv or some music blaring in the background. We do discuss some strategy but we usually get into discussing how to change up a scenario or add some wacky rules to try out. It's all good but just doesn't happen enough, imo. :D

Interesting poll, Aranas!

Most games are minimum three players. Sometimes up to six.

We usually watch some tube, listen to some music, order food (if early enough), drink beer (courtesy of the Keg fridge under the bar ), and have a great time. Sometimes after we quit we'll play some Mario Cart or Pac-Man vs both for game cube. :toast:

My games are me VS my kids - we get the same # of points but they each get a set of order markers...

Used to play 4+ players always. But since hitting the tourney scene it's been more 1 on 1. I like the quick play aspect.

One on one with one of two different friends. I am looking forward to my son being old enough to play!

Generally we play when the kids are in bed and the wives can go off on their own and chat or watch a movie. Our games are referred to as "Nerd Fests" by the wives. It is disappointing that they will atleast not try the game once. Oh well, their loss.

Games are usually preceeded by a meal together with the wives and kids.

Usually it's one on one but tonight it'll be a 4 player every man for himself game. Mostly though for the last month I haven't even had a chance to play and I've only ever played 1 solo game, but that was during the testing for my Colleseum Map.

Weekly, two couples get together to eat and drink and such, the guys play one on one, the wife and girl-friend don't play but know how the game is played and do make comments, often ridiculing the guys.

We've had a few times when another player was around and we played three way. We've never played two vs. two; but I'd like to try that.

We play one on one and two on two. We've played several 3 player games but find that such games when played every man for himself usually turn out to be vastly unfair for one player.

Now if we have 3 players, we'll do a four player scenerio with one person controlling two armies.

I only have one younger brother who is willing to play, so all my games are 1 on 1, which gets very boring. Also my brother's not so good at heroscape so i beat him almost every time. I'm thinking about playing more solo games for a change of pace.

I've only played team twice... Most of the one on one is against family members ( but there are 7 1/2 of us that play ). I really like it when I can find or host tournements as I enjoy doing battle against new and different oponents.

Most of the games I play (about 75%) are played one on one against my son. The monthly DFW gatherings that I attend are dominated by one on one matches, though sometimes there are team vs team matches on huge maps. I personally prefer to play quick and dirty matches on small maps with small armies. That way I get to play as many games and opponents as possible.

Rarely I'll play SoloScape, though the new automated rules intrigue me.

How long does a 2500 point match take? And what size of map do you play it on?

Ive played a lot of 1 on 1, ive played 2 games of 2v2 played one game of 1v1v1v1, and Ive played one game of 3v3. I like one versus one the best because it shows your skill level and teaches you the most, but once in a while its fun to throw a different kind of thing in there.

Well most of the time i play solo games with 2 armies, but today i played a game with my dad and bro (which we do from time to time) and usually my bro wins, but today he went out first and now doesn't ever want to play heroscape again (he is such a sore loser...and a sore winner for that matter). So me and my dad went on to play two 1-on-1 games which i won both! but i prefered playing 1-on-1 rather than 3+ (unless i had some friends who were into it, and maybe more space to make bigger fields). And the reason i play solo mostly is because no one living with me would play it on a regular basis! (and for strategic purposes of course! :D )

Humm. 28 votes in. Very interesting! Up to now, 15 play one on one and 10 (7+3) play multi players game. One is playing mostly solo and two have the chance to play all of theses.
I didn't know what to expect when I asked the question. Lets see how it goes. C'mon. Bring your votes in! :)

used to get a lot of 1 v 1 in, but now we usually stick with 2 v 2 @ 500 pts. would love to get enough together to hit it at 3 v 3

I usually play one on one, but I've had my fair share of large 6 - 8 (even 10!) player games. I have to say though that I prefer smaller and shorter games just so I can play more. Larger games are long and inevitably involve more newbs, and therefore take even longer than you might expect.

That said, it's always a small victory when my friends get the wives to play with us. Last game my wife played she frenzied with the Venocs 3 times in a row and slaughtered a ton of Knights, getting progressively more excited with each frenzy. Best game ever, to see her getting excited about heroscape. :D

I see your point. Up to six players, I still find it very pleasant but over that, it is very long indeed!

I had a second game session with a member of this board yesterday. I went to ArchonShiva's place with my eight year old son. My son was really impressed  by ArchonShiva's complete HeroScape collection. He was so pleased to see the figurines of Raknar's vision like the Dragons and the Giant!
Before playing, we began the meeting by a big breakfast in a restaurant with Archon's girlfriend who is a very nice person. Then the match... (we played two games on the same map, the RTTFF scenario for three players). I was strating on the bridge, having to defend it and waiting/hoping for reinforcement.

Well, the first game was a slaughter! I lost badly to ArchonShiva and my son in the first round!!! I rolled and played badly. I was facing Jotun for the first time and I received the :jotun:
The second one was better as, because of time constraint, it ended as a draw. :fencing: I also received good advice by ArchonShiva for selecting my reinforcements. In that second game, I had the pleasure of killing Jotun with Sudema. Quite cool!

It is cool to meet people because of a game!
