View Full Version : Battle with every piece I own?

I'm thinking about setting up a map, roughly 6'x6' and dividing every thing I have into 2 armies. I have 3 of every common and every unique so far. I may give each team 3 sets of order markers and on your team you can move any of your 1's, then the opponent can move any of his 1's and so on until the 1's are done, then repeat with 2's and 3's...3 x's for fakeout purposes. Only restriction would be you couldn't put the same order # on one particular army card....so you couldn't have multiple #1 order markers on somebody. One particular piece would max out at 3 turns in a round.

I'm not sure of the point total of a battle like this, I'm guessing it would be roughly 8,000. I'll borrow a digital camera off my friend and I'll take pics and update my thread over the course of however long it takes to play the battle out. Probably a week or so.

Would anybody be interested in reading something like this; a battle with the MS and all waves?

I have done many battles like this before it's very fun but takes a while to finish.

I'm sure this will truly be a sight to behold... and no small task to complete, either.

So more power to you, Noodles! Heh... though I am interested to see how this plays out.

This post reminds me of the battlefield map Teamski set up a while back, only to display his collection of figs at the time. I don't think he actually played the game out once everything was set up, but it did make for an impressive picture.

I will take a picture like Teamski's pic once I have it all setup. Probably not until next week but I'm leaning towards giving it a go definitely.

Those huge games take a LONG time to finish. I'm serious. Expect to dedicate a minimum of two full gaming days to that one matchup.

IMO, those epic games are fun, but I tend to have the same amount of fun in a MUCH shorter period of time with smaller games. I guess it's something you at least have to try once though -- especially since you seem to have a burning desire to do so.

Definitely post pics and a battle report.

Truthfully the idea just started with seeing what a map would look like with everything I had on it.....then I thought if I was going to set it up, why not play it out?

Well I used to do that when I had just a few sets of terrain.....but dude, I have 11 MS, 9 RTFF, 9 VW, and soon to be 9 snow and 4 castles. Big maps are impressive but sometimes it's funner to play multiple smaller games and have multiple maps pre-built and ready to go then to just play 1 massive long game on a ginormous map.

I agree. Big games are enjoyable but can be frustrating for someone who get's knocked out early and has to wait for the rest to finish up a 2.5 hour game. Having some smaller maps available lets others play games while the big game is going on. Maybe building a big map and using it as smaller maps can perform the same function...just use some obvious markers to delineate borders.

Interesting idea....if you could design a very large map and break it in sections (so the map was modular) you could play the scenario out in sections. I know there was a modular map thread on HQ...did that end up going anywhere?

Or you could just play small point value games on a large map, giving yourself some breathing room.

As for big-game order marker rules, here's a variant that my group has taken a real shine to...

Each player gets 2 of each numbered marker and one X.

Each round goes like this....

Player 1 (ie, the player that won initiative) activates BOTH of their number ones....one of them as a full turn, the other as a "move only" activation. On a "move only" activation no attack may be made, and no aggressive power may be used, such as Chomp or Acid Breath. Passive powers may be used, or active powers that are not used to directly attack, such as Summoning, Healing, Carry, etc. The announcement of which piece is attacking and which piece is moving can happen after both pieces have moved, if the player likes. If a player has a lot of commons, they move move and attack with one card's worth, and then just move a different set of that same common....they may not move a figure twice in the same turn (unless a power like Frenzy allows it).

Player 2 than does the same for his number ones, followed by player 1's number twos, and so on.

The X marker is used as a swap turn. Once per round, in any turn, you may swap the X card's turn for any numbered activation as a FULL TURN. As in, instead of moving and attacking with number 2 Minutemen and moving wiht number 2 Marcus, you can choose to move and attack with number 2 minutemen and move and attack with number X Taelord.

We find this method works astonishingly well for large games. It gives you a bit of choice, while still preserving the risky elements of order markers, and activates more troops at once, something that is needed in large games.

This sounds like a great idea. It's very similar to what I do now but switching the x, and limiting the abilities of half of each turn sequence are nice subtle touches. I will definitely have to try this out. Thxs.

I wish I could use all my terrain on one map..but that'd mean moving the couch..the lil couch and mostly everything else on the floor and I still might now have enough room....

now if ye wanted me to use all my fiqures...umm talk bout hellacious armies...or a 7 or 8 person ffa...that might be fun though...

Hmmm. I might make this a project once the house clears of some long-term guests there. I have a decent sized table and can place two 4'x4' sheets of plywood on them. That would be fun to try....

"Are you pondering what I'm pondering?"

For large scale battles, our group institues the "run" rule. For some of you reading this it will sound like I'm beating a dead horse but for the rest of you, trust me this works.

When you activate a figure or squad, you have the option of moving twice if you are not going to attack as if you're running. It definitely speeds up traversing a huge map and I have had ZERO problems from anybody while playing like this.
