I had a wacky idea for a format to try...

Draft
No more than 1 of each unique among all players
You Draft 5 cards, maximum of 1 from each General

for 2 or 4 players

What do you think?

I'd love to get in on a team battle, but I currently don't have any grudges with anyone. However, I'd be more than willing to create one just so I could get in the thick of things.

Okay, I found the map info that D-man posted originally (and I don't think it changed from there):

Claimed:
2 Slots (1 table) for Irate Giraffe with custom terrain pieces
(If anyone else wants to bring custom terrain pieces to play on we should add them to these maps where possible.)
4 slots (2 tables) for the massive map built by Dman (or 4 singles)
1 Slot Swam of the marro for Dman
1 marvelscape (or sotm) for Dman

Open:
2 Forest maps
1 lava
1 ice
1 castle

Now, I could possibly handle all those myself (except I might not have enough RttFF to build 2 forest maps, depending on how many RttFF's would be required per map). But I would like some help picking the maps. I really suck at picking maps--I always pick the ones that look the coolest (:)), which is certainly not the same as finding ones that will play well in a tournament setting. So if anyone with more map savvy than me wouldn't mind just popping up a few links for me, I'd be happy to take care of the rest. Thanx guys!

Also, if anyone is planning to bring terrain themselves, definitely speak up so I know not to overbring. ;)

Updates/reminders on other stuff from me: No table, two whiteboards (with markers & eraser), and SSX is leaning towards staying home now (but, who knows, he could change his mind several more times between now and then).

October 16th, 2007, 05:08 PM
Hey Xotli, thanks for bringing all of that. The same goes for you Doc and anyone else who is going to be helping out!

Don't worry about the maps Xotli because we aren't really focusing on tournament play anymore. Of course there are several maps in the last tournament thread that would be more then fine: http://heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=9815. I am probably going to build a scenario map or two and then do the rest free form on my end.

Prize support-
So far I haven't heard anything back which I assume means Gbob was on a very tight window to get stuff in and we just didn't make the grade. So it looks like it is all donations, nothing is to small people =)

Event Rundown-
Since people are asking again here is a quick idea of what is going on:
I should have the place open by 10am maybe earlier and people are welcome to stay until midnight, but we will probably do the tally for prizes etc around 6pm.

The day is all free challenge with open formats. There will be challenge cards to record your games with, a trophy being passed around, and one chain of team grudge challenges too try and get in on.

We are looking at having up to 30 participants so things may be get a little crowded as far as tables go so it would be a good idea to bring something else to keep you busy or expect to watch some games.

I will be bringing up an icechest, food and drinks are acceptable. Just please, nothing to obvious in the stain department.

Bringing something to roll in might be a good idea and a camera if you have one to help with taking pictures.

Latecomers-
If you don't have any matchups setup do not worry about it! There will be plenty of other people looking to get games going once you get there and there will be a whiteboard to post open challenges for people to accept.

Runehardt is still hoping to attend, but isn't sure.

Hey Scapers:

One of the custom boards we are bringing is full of bushes/reeds we made in the vein of what will be arriving with the next large expansion. They are real fun to play with (plus one defense against ranged attacks). We made them from supplies from a clearance at a craft store and have tons of leftover supplies we won't be using.

So, I was thinking of bringing the supplies. They are simple to make customs. We just drill a hole in a hex, put the plant pieces through, wire them and hot glue gun them and some rocks around the base. They only take a few minutes to make and look pretty good (Sorry I don't have pics).

Anyways, I could bring all of our excess supplies and maybe set up little station for people who would want to make their own reeds hexes? All you would have to supply is the hex-tile (Grass single, double or triples work great). We have everything else. This could even be done outside, all that is needed is a socket for the drill and hot glue gun and a little bit of space.

What do you guys think?

"Don't worry" meaning don't worry about them not being tournament-worty, I presume. :) Okay, no worries then.

That link refers me back to this link (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=5725), so I'll see how many of those I can put together. I should be able to handle Ember Canyon Road, Arctic Divide, and probably Highways and Dieways. Then I'll see where I can go from there. I'll post how far I get tomorrow.

And just to start off the fun, Xotli - I challange you to a "Welcome to SoCal" Grudge.

Hey, good call ... I did say I was going to check to see if I could bring one o' them myself.

So, further updates/clarifications: bringing 2 whiteboards w/ markers & eraser, possibly a digital camera, enough terrain to build 3 or more maps, an army of speedy dudes w/ which to kick ODB's butt , no table, and SSX is now leaning back towards coming again (see, I told you he'd change his mind several more times ;)). Okay, so far have successfully built, disassembled, and packed Road to Ember Canyon and Arctic Divide. Will next tackle Broken Skyline ... Highways and Dieways is right out, as I'm getting to the end of my RttFF. Anyone want to volunteer to handle one of the forest maps? Or, hell, just volunteer to bring me the trees and I can build Mole Hills ...

So at this point, I'm down to RotV and FotA only, unless we want yet another VW or TT map. Oh, and I have a SotM, but I think D-man already volunteered to set up one o' them.

(Did I mention that maps isn't my thing? :D)

I haven't been on here in a while. Been super busy. I see this has gotten huge!
I am planning on coming tomorrow. :D Too much info here to read so I know what to bring. I guess I'll just bring whatever I can fit in the car. Do we still need tables? I didn't think the space was big enough for all these people.

I'm goig to try to get some giveaways from work today. Maybe I'll knock out some buttons really quick like.

Detrimentalman
October 19th, 2007, 03:12 PM
As of now we may be setting up a table or two outside Rune, weather permiting, but I think we already have two tables coming with people so we should be fine. If you can easily bring one without difficulty it may come in handy though.

Great inspiration on demonstrating some custom work, i'm sure it would be appreciated (as long as there is room :) ). I know there are sockets and there are extension cords about for whatever we need on that end. It may be that we have to setup something in the garage for it, but that type of stuff has to be figured out on saturday when the final numbers and tables are known.

Stuff you can bring-
YES! Bring digi cams if you can. I will be walking around with mine or trying to convince my sister to play photographer for the event, but as I have said before personal pictures mean you can comment on what is happening rather then just random shots.

I have a large icechest for people to put drinks in. Bring some snacks, maybe even something that can be shared like a big bag of chips and we'll have a sort of impromptu snack bar.

Plus bring a ms or exp if you can, leave it in your car unless you're one of the large contributors. If we wind up with more table room then we'll ask for someone to bring something up if possible.

Of course bring yourself and 400-500pt armies as those are the standard sizes. It would be a good idea to have some themed armies to mix things up like all orcs or jandar only etc

Xotli
October 19th, 2007, 06:03 PM
I can definitely bring trees if you need them, I would try and help with maps, but I am using most my sets for the one i am bringing in.
Okay, bring me the 4 single-base trees and I'll bring enough terrain for Mole Hills (http://www.heroscapers.com/download/index.php?dlid=208).

Hopefully there will be enough maps - I'm planning on bringing my armies, but no maps...
Well, looks like I'm bringing 4 maps at this point. Which is still one shy of the space that D-man allocated, not counting any extra tables. So there's still time and room for someone to jump in with another map! Failing that, I'm sure people will bring extra terrain as D-man requested and we can always fake up something at the last minute.

Too much info here to read so I know what to bring. I guess I'll just bring whatever I can fit in the car.
Wanna volunteer to bring enough to build a map? I'm doing Ember Canyon Road, Arctic Divide, Broken Skyline, and Mole Hills (with trees by Roland). If you wanted to jump in and fill that last slot, you could.

Wanna volunteer to bring enough to build a map? I'm doing Ember Canyon Road, Arctic Divide, Broken Skyline, and Mole Hills (with trees by Roland). If you wanted to jump in and fill that last slot, you could.
It would be cool if you can bring this one, Rune...

Everyone: Bring one, two or three hex grass tiles if you wish to take advantage of free custom reeds. We will supply the reeds/flowers/plants, gluegun, wire and everything else so you can make simple customs. We also have little stones to put around the base of the plants. They end up looking real good and are very easy to make.

Unfortunately I have a rental car right now and it's a PT Cruiser so I don't know if I can fit that map in the back. I might be heading down with DValhalla so actually not sure which vehicle I'm going to be in. Either way... I'm downloading the file now. I will build it or something similar. I'll bring a map either way.

I just grabbed a 2GB flash card for the Rebel so I'll take lots of pictures tomorrow. Now I have to build some armies. I finally grabbed wave 7 at Target tonight. I grabbed an extra Vampire pack. In case someone who doesn't have the new wave wants to borrow them. DValhalla gets first dibs!

wow - I'm so behind on these posts... I read up through page 18 and had to to quit. I need to get on to building a map. Unfortunately my custom Heroscape tabletoppers won't fit in the car so I found a piece of scrap wood to build a map on. I'll try to make it somewhat like the cross roads map but it's not big enough. Is anyone bringing a swamp map? I can't tell from all of the posts. Maybe I'll work the swamp into the crossroads map.

Dvalhalla and I will be coming down together and we'll try to be there before 11:00.

I saw there was a mention of possibly playing some other side "filler" games. I'll bring some Fluxx, Werewolf cards, Incan gold or something just in case.

Hey rune, I didn't even crack my other sotm so you can use that in your map if you want too.

I sent you a PM griffon.

Stage #1 of setup is complete. I built 4 (1 sotm, 1 ms/road, 1ms/lava, and one ice, 3 of which have scenarios) maps and setup a marvel set on a corkboard to make it mobile. With some rearrangement of the tables I think there is plenty of room for two more tables. I just need to pickup ice and grab more chairs from storage and I will be 100%. I will definately be up by 9 and should make my quick run to the store before 10. I may be fielding directions if anyone needs it so if you are arriving early just give my cell a call or try the recroom door if I am not there.

Cool - I put together a map last night that resembles the Crossroads map but has the Swarm of the Marro terrain mixed in. I have the hive off to the side so it can be used or removed. Now hopefully I can fit everything in the car.
My map: Allay at Arb Mahla
I definitely can't fit a table in the car.

I have:
enough terrain for 4 maps

I will get my photos up asap and I have some of the scoreboard for those who are interested.

It was a pleasure having everyone and it made it all worth it to see everyone having a blast on National Heroscape Day!

P.S. Please let people know if you made it home with something extra! I have a few odds and ends like wound markers, but the standouts are two army cards. If you are missing any cards then feel free to PM me with the details, if they are the two I have then I will get them to you.

Man, I had a lot of fun. Thanks Dman and all the sponsers!

I was glad everyone enjoyed the two custom maps I brought.

I had some fun games myself. I ended up 4/5 cause I was rolling dice like crazy. But I played a lot of characters I hadn't in a while. Sacred Band with Parmenio, Valguard and Marcus; the shades which I did nothing with. I really enjoyed trying out Sonlen. I played him with Jotun, and then with Charos, and both times I activated Sonlen twice as much as the big hitter. Even when that D20 isn't reliable he has that attack 4 range 6 which can be great on height. And then to have the chances of the dragon heal/swoop. He is quickly becoming my favorite, even though it's 160pts for a 3 defense, 6 lifer that can fall quickly. I just send out the big hitters first, then when they get down to half life send in Sonlen, and my opponent would keep focusing on the big hitter, while I would attempt D20 Dragon things and attack 5 from height.

Anyways, I played some fun games and had a great time. Hope to see everyone again at the next event!

Man, even though I made it late it was a ton of fun playing and meeting all the new folks (Doc, Irate and his crew, Roland and his general/girlfriend, Obs and Dad, X and dvalhalla). Good to see all the regulars as usual. The day turned out great.

My high/low lights:

Game 1: team game w/ BIGJIM vs. Roland and his gf (my viper swarm and BIGJIM's samurai vs. Rolands elven army and E's orcs). I had some lucky frenzy rolls early that allowed for my vipers to run around and pick off orcs and elves. The orcs really started to whittle me down, so I slowed and waited for my plodding samurai allies to plug up the middle. Game highlight--my vipers frenzying FOUR time against Rolands Warriors of Ashra but only taking down one lady elf  . One shield for Roland everytime. We finally prevailed w/ the samurai range and hero picking off the last of the orcs/elves. Very fun game. :D

Game 2: my Vampires/Deathstalkers vs. BIGJIM's orcs w/ krugg. Not much to brag about here. I got the retchets out, but they only killed one heavy grut before the crumpled. Grimnak not only chomped Cyprien, but gulped down Sonya and Iksra to boot  . I had better luck w/ the hounds and it came down to one robomutt vs. Krugg one 1 life left. Krugg b-slapped the dog. Good game, comps.

Game 3: team Grudge match, Oogie and I w/ the templar/4th mass army vs. BIGJIM and Allskulls w/ various Utgar units (MW, Minions, Marcu and Iksra, Deathstalkers, DW and some more robodogs.) Well, what can we saw, the road right down the middle of the map set up so great charges by the templar who rode down DW as well as some minions, Iksra before she could spew the retchets, and Marcu. 4th Mass shot up everything else. Sorry fellas, the tag team champs defend the title! 8)

Looking forward to our next get together. Thanks to D-man for all the hard work, Allskulls for all the artwork and printed elements to the day, Runehardt for the buttons, stickers and cool t-shirt and to everyone who made time yesterday for some good 'scaping.

Boom, I never got to play you! Next time!

I played Dman first, who whooped me with Mimrings fire line-- he rolled allskulls twice, killing 4 shades and the vampire chick!

Then I beat Obsidianator with Sonlen and Jotun, but it was close, came down to Jotun and Deadeye.

Then I beat Sheppard, my knights against his dogs and I rolled like crazy.

Then I beat Ty with the sacred band bonding with their warlords, again I rolled better than I could imagine.

And my last game was against Wilk. I had Sonlen and Charos. I disengaged rats and other units 5 times to get Charos where he would be most effective, and Wilk rolled all blanks on them. Then Charos did his counterstrike magic, while I tried to Dragon heal/swoop and shoot from behind with Sonlen.

All my games were 400 points and around 40 minutes long, I think. Lots of fun. I've never played 5 games in a day before. Usually, I'm done after two.

I would also like to thank everybody who helped make yesterday such an awesome event. I had a great time. I got my butt kicked all day but that doesn't matter. It's all about the playing - not about the winning.
It was cool to meet a few more Heroscapers that I only knew from the their avatars!

Good times all day yesterday!

No pics from me, as I was cameraless.

Rundown of my games:

1) 400pts battle to the death
I faced tt4JC with Sonlen, Raelin2, Marcu, Iskra & the Retchets. I ran with the Ashiguru Riflesx3, Tagawa Samurai and Kozuke Smurai. I lost the Kozuke but after that the Ashiguru cleaned house. It was Marcu remaining with tons of food on the board to keep him healthy. He advanced cautiously, eating one Ashiguru at a time until rolling a 17 for Eternal Hatred. I moved him right into the center of a high ground firing squad. 4 attacks of 4 was too much for the cursed Esenwein. Good fun, Ty, and congrats again on the Felloship Award! Well deserved, my friend 8)

2) 400pts Scenario: The Ruins of Anund (Fun scenario on a cool custom terrain board!)
Roy brought the elves: Morsbane, Warriors of Ashra x3 and Syvaris with his mount, Theracus. Wanting to test my soulbourgs before my battle with Roland, I ran with a peice of that army: Major Q10, Gladiatrons x1, Blastatrons x2 and Deathreavers x1 (for filler). I gained good control of the battle, taking out Syv and his little pony but the tables turned drastically by the dreaded D20. Q10 fell to a negation roll of 20!!! But in the end my remaining 5 Blastatrons stood victorious over the warring elves. Good game, Roy! Won't mind sitting accross from you for another.

3) 550pts Vydar vs Marro
The first of the challenges posed here on the boards that I played. Roland commanded SuBakNa, Stingersx4 and Marro Drones x3 aginst my Agent Carr, Q10 and Glad/Blast combo x2. All my markers would go to the Blastatrons for the first few rounds so I could take the two walls in the middle of the field. I maintined the high ground, picking off the advancing Drones and Stingers until their Hivelord finally entered the battle. I wanted him to come into my range so a #3 marker waited on Q10 who would eventually take out SuBakNa and a couple of his underlings before going down himself by way of the charged Stingers. Too bad he's so merciful. The game ends with Carr being taken out by the Stingers while a lone Blastatron sits with no order markers. He did not last. Good match, Roland! We now officially have a real grudge to settle   See you on the 11th

4) 400pts Draft- Death Match Over Lava
chewbaccapits- Raelin, Johnny Shotgun, Sir Hawthorne and Sentinels of Jandar (I think I'm missing someone here?)
me- Q10 (wanted to see him do better), Cyprien, Iskra and the Retchets
The Retchets really won this one for me, taking out 3 heroes with the Lethal Sting...ALLSKULLS, BABY! I think I found a good 400pt, mostly-hero team. Thanks for the game, chewy! I know you will be ready next time...and you do matter :D

5) 400pts Einar vs Utgar- Fire in the Snow
DValhalla- Mimring and some others
me- Kozuke and Ashiguru Sticks and Peashooters x3
My mistake...carelessly lining up my Kozuke for the dragon breath of hot death. After that all hope was lost as my 1 defense barbeque buffet was made orc food by Mimring. Till we meet again, DV  Good fun, bro 8)

6) 400pts Utgar vs Jandar- Death Match Over Lava 2
Royal Griffin- Drake2, Airbourne Elite & Sentinels of Jandar
me- Mimring (wanted to command the fire I just felt), Cyprien, Iskra & the Retchets (I've taken a liking to these guys)
Royal Griffin is a killer on the board. Drake hunted down Mimring and got some distracting help from the dropping AE which strategically took out Iskra before she could summon the Retchets. Mimring had one glory moment, taking out 3 of the AE with a single Fireline. Ultimately the golden dragon and the vampiric Lord could not withstand the blade of Alexander. The champ earned his title, taking out 7 opponents for the day! Good job, Royal!

7) 300pts Death Match - Swamp Fight
Jared- Deadey Dan, Krav Maga Agents, Deathstalkers and Deathreavers
me- Q10, Iskra, Retchets and Marro Warriors
This turned into a slaughter with the Retchets coming in on turn 3 and bring some death to Jared's starting zone. It was the Marro Warriors that did most of the work though. I hope to get another, higher point, game with you some day, Jared. Cool player 8)

8) 300pts Death Match - Deep Freeze
Obsidianator- Minions of Utgar, Sentinels of Jandar and Finn
me- Nilfiem and the Airbourne Elite
Nilf fought off the tough Minions and the AE came in on round 2 to take shots at the Sentinels and Finn. Shortest game of the day :D
This was a real grudge match as my Ullar army was beaten to a pulp by this kid over a year ago in that same rec room. I'm sure we'll face off again, Obsidianator. Always a pleasure :D

Looking back on it, I think I did pretty good. I went 5 out of 8 games before the totals were tallied. It was the Team Grudge Title Match that was really bad for me. Me and BIGJIM took our Utgar forces against Boom & Oogie's Jandar squads. Good triumphed over evil  and the Team Grudge Title was successfully defended. I should have taken Mimring over DW9K! I wanted to use a figure that's rarely seen. Well, he wasn't seen for long anyway :? Good fun, guys. Next time it won't be so easy  .

DocSavage- Man, I'm sorry we did not get that game in. I should have played you by myself (doggone lagging, boom :D ). Next time, for sure. I'll forfiet a match to get our game in, bro.

Runehardt- Thanks for the cool stuff! Got my shirt on now 8)

Dman- Dude, you did a great job putting this thing together. Much props. We still have to play again. Hopefully we can face each other on the 11th 8)

Wilk- Good to see you again, bro. When was the last time we played? Gotta roll some.

IG and Crew- Thanks for coming out guys. Wish we could meet up more often.

KidSkullz says thanks and it was cool 8)

SSX and I would also like to report that we had an awesome time. I usually have trouble talking him into playing with me (and often times even when I do he loses interest before we can finish the game), but there was Heroscape in the air yesteday and he was caught up in the action. I'll leave him to post his game reports if he so desires; I don't think he won any of them, but most of them (if not all) were close.

For my part, I was running a bit late, so I had to scramble to get the maps I was bringing put up for everyone to play on. Right about the time I was done, SSX had decided to totally revamp his army and managed to break up every single prebuilt I had brought. So I slapped something together just in time to meet Doc Savage, who had just arrived with his son.

Game 1: Doc Savage
The Armies:
Me--G'nators x2, Nakitas, Saylind, new Raelin
Doc--Tarns, Bodvär (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=907), Sentinels x1, 4th Mass x2, Eldgrim
The Factors:
Experience--When Doc sat down, he cautioned me that he doesn't get to play many adults; most of his games are with his kids. IOW, we were perfectly matched. :D I was actually really glad to get this matchup first: it wasn't an easy game by any means, but I wasn't totally in over my head either.
Armies--Doc had the edge in power, and raw numbers. I had the edge in mobility, which made a big difference. Also note that Doc was getting the 4th Mass's all-valiant army bonus.
Map--We chose an all-arctic map, which also turned out to be a major factor. We did not play with heavy snow, but we did use slippery ice, so that made movement a tricky prospect. Being a fair amount of ranged battle (G'nators vs 4th Mass), the glaciers made a big difference as well.
Luck--In general, the dice gods were fairly even-handed. In a single round, I had one turn with the G'nators where I rolled all skulls (attacking from height, so 3 dice) every time, :o and the very next round, again with G'nators, whiffed every time. So that balanced out pretty well. Luck did not smile on the Tarns, however, as Doc rolled a 14 for his first 3 frenzy attemtps, and it was downhill from there. I think he hit the frenzy only once, in his last of 7 attempts. I also won the first two initiatives, which I think made a difference.
The Battle:
Since I won the first initiative, I was able to make a very strong surge to the center of the map, off to one side. The movement bonding thing is definitely "crappy" bonding, but it ain't nothing to be sneezed at either. Between that and Saylind, I was able to cozy up most of the G'nators with their backs against a glacier, able to fire at anyone coming around either side of it, with a Nakita adjacent to every single one. Oh, and Raelin within six spaces of everyone (although I had to do some extra maneuvering to make sure she could see everyone around the glaciers). The Tarns had a very tough slog through the snow, especially since they kept missing their frenzy rolls. And of course the Sentinels also have a move of 4, although in their case the flying makes a big difference. Even the 4th Mass had difficulty getting positioned without getting picked off, which meant that they only got to use Wait Then Fire once or twice. Saylind was an easy target and got picked off early; other than that, between Smoke Powder and Tough, the G'nators were really tough to beat. Of course, the Sentinels weren't any easier to take down, so I only managed to take them out when Doc whiffed. Raelin went down next on my side, but she did manage to use that Whirlwind Attack once (between two Sentinels). In the meantime, I had decided that Bodvär must die, and was able to finally take him down after spending two rounds concentrating on nothing else. But in the end, having the G'nators clumped so close together, on height, which Nakitas all around really made the difference. I don't believe I moved a single figure the last 4 rounds or so, and every time the Smoke Powder went off, it would eliminate about half my guys as targets. I managed to pick off the 4th Mass roughly 1 per round throughout the game and, after that, the Tarns and Sentinels, all attacking from below (since I had every single hex with height in that area occupied) with a 40% chance of not even being able to attack and then having to roll a minimum of 2 skulls to even have a chance to take down a G'nator, or having to risk an Engagement Strike to try to take down a Nakita ... well, it was just a matter of time until the Jandar valiant succumbed to those wily Vydar agents.
Reflections:
Although I had been thinking last week about an army with 2 squads of G'nators and Nakitas, I had abandoned that idea. I had brought the G'nator's for my "speed match" (see below), and the Nakitas for a possible themed army that would be all female characters. But SSX had raided my cavalry and my WoA for his latest army idea, so I was improvising and decided to go back to G'nators + Nakitas as the core. And it's really a good core, surprisingly. So far, IME G'nators x2 sux and G'nators x1 + Nakitas sux, but G'nators x2 + Nakitas ... really sweet. Again, I was lucky to have such a gentle first tourney game, and I think in the end, the map (plus maybe the fact that I got the early initiatives) really made the difference. On a different day on a different map, Doc could have easily taken me.

Game 2: SSX
The Armies:
Me--same as Game 1
SSX--SBN, MW, Wolves x1, Dumutef x1, Microcorp x1, Theracus, Shiori
The Factors:
Experience--Obviously when I play SSX, I allow a few things I wouldn't ordinarily. First of all, his army is 10 pts over, which I let him slide on. Also I let him use the X order marker as a wild card. Although I never pull any punches with him, I do have a tendency to offer advice while we're playing, which of course I wouldn't for anyone else. Other than that, I don't actually have much more experience than he does (since most of my games have been with him), so we play straight up.
Armies--Usually we just mess around when picking armies. SSX had been experimenting, so his army didn't have as much synergy as mine, and that hurt him.
Map--This was a moderately flat map, so it was harder to get that major height advantage I got in the first game. Also, it wasn't completely symmetrical, which I didn't notice at first, so SSX ended up getting the side which was one level higher than the other, and that gave him a very slight edge. Also there was a road running right through the middle, which gave the Dumutef a place to plant himself and take out anybody who got near him.
Luck--For some reason, when SSX and I play, he generally has great luck with the attack and defense dice, while I suck with them, and I have good luck with the 20-sider, and it hates him. So typically I win all the initiatives and he wins all the battles. This time, things were pretty even, although he did seem to have good rolling against the G'nators. He even had good luck cloning, only missing one attempt (out of 5 or 6). However, when it came to the wolves, he rolled not one but two 1's, and that made a huge difference. Lesson: never take wolves without the Dorklord.
The Battle:
We both grabbed height (such as it was) as soon as possible, but as I say I accidentally grabbed the wrong side, making my front row G'nators one level lower than the Microcorps on the other side. The G'nators didn't last nearly as long as they did in the first game. Theracus went down quickly on SSX's side, and SBN obviously had a huge target painted on his skully forehead. The MW were whittled down to 1 then came back up to 3. Saylind fell under SBN's toothy maw before Raelin was able to step in and take the bone dragon out. Then it was mainly Nakitas and the few remaining G'nators trading shots with the Microcorp, with Shiori infiltrating my side to assassinate apes, until only 2 Nakitas remained standing. The lone remaining wolf was no problem to take out, but the Dumutef proved tougher, pounding the crap out of an already wounded Raelin. Before the Dumutef had to make the decision to leave the road, though, one lucky shot from Foxy Brown laid him low and the game was mine.
Reflections:
Despite the advantages I gave him, SSX's army didn't work that well together and really should have gone down much faster ... some luck and SSX's tenacity really held it together. The flatter, more open map negated some of the advantages of the G'nators/Nakitas combo that shone so well in the first game. Although my army should have kicked butt in this game, it was much closer than I expected and if those Relentless Fury rolls had gone the other way, I could easily have gone down.

Game 3: Oogie_Da_Bruce
The Armies:
Me--G'nators x2, KT x1, SBN, Theracus
ODB--Nilf, MW, KMA, old Raelin, Rats x 2
The Factors:
Experience--I was clearly outmatched from the get-go. Playing the majority of my games against roughly 10-year-olds did not in any way prepare me for the tournament-hardened juggernaut that was ODB. ;)
Armies--The theme of the match was speed: only units with move 6 or higher. I took this a step further and went with mainly units with move 7 and up (only SBN in my army was move 6). I was hoping that the increased mobility would make up for the fact that I didn't have a lot of synergy going on, but, alas, it was not to be. I'm not sure if ODB was counting on syngergy either; his main strategy seemed to be to send out units one at a time to kick my butt. :D
Map--This was just adding insult to injury. I was hoping we'd get to play on one of Irate Giraffe's beautiful maps with the custom terrain, but unfortunately he had to head out, so we made a last-minute change to a different map with a lot of lava and extremely rocky high ground in the middle. As we were setting up, I realized that the cavalry boys were just screwed, as there was nowhere to charge to without trying to get over that mountain in the middle. Having lots of high ground in the middle for the G'nators to climb all over didn't make up for having 120 points of my army rendered fairly ineffective. But, as I say, the map was just the icing on the cake for Oogie: I still would have gone down on the flatter map, I'm sure ... just perhaps not quite as fast. ;)
Luck--Not a huge factor in this game. I did whiff a few times with the G'nators at crucial moments, but ODB more than compensated by whiffing with Nilf at a super crucial moment, so I'd say it was fairly even.
The Battle:
I worked on getting the G'nators up to the central peak, including having Theracus ferry the first one up, but the clones came out strong (only 3, though; Oogie held the last one in reserve as a clone factory). Theracus went down before he could even make a second trip, but SBN came in and cleaned out the MW. Not without cost, though: he took about 3 wounds in the process, and was easy meat for the next wave of destruction, a.k.a. the Nilfinator. Nilf also made easy monkey meat out of the G'nators, leaving only one or two before swooping in to pick off the KT, who had no room to charge. One went down, then suddenly Oogie made that whiff, and the mighty ice dragon crumbled under close attacks from the two remaining knights. But by that time it was pointless: the KT could barely get across the mountain, their double bases and the treacherous lava completely counteracting their 8 move. The KMA picked off the remaining G'nators, who only managed to take 2 rats with them, then the KT were easy pickings.
Reflections:
(1) G'nators without Nakitas suck. (2) KT need a flat map to be effective. (3) ODB is very gracious in victory and fun to talk to, so even though I got spanked hard, I had a great time losing.

And that was all the games I played. Although ODB thoughtfully decimated me with brutal efficiency, :) the first two games were a bit slower-paced. Which is fine for me: the quality is much more important than the quantity.

So glad to have finally met all you guys! Looking forward to doing it again real soon.

Epilogue: SSX reported that Doc's son (with whom he played two games) was now his rival, and his friend. "You know," he said, "my rival in Heroscape, but my friend in life." And that's what it's all about. :)

Hey Everyone!

Had a good time scaping on Saturday!! Unfortunately I didn't get there till about 2pm, which only left me time for about 2.5 games, but it was still cool to see such a turnout!!

My first game was with Royalgriffin. I fielded 2 sets of gladiatrons, 1 set of bastatrons, MQ10, and Guilty to fill the last 30 pts. 400 pt armies, Griffin fielded the izumi samuri, kozuke, realin, and kaemon. An early error in order marker placement and Griffin's aggressive samurai assault saw my army get widdled down pretty quickly. The deciding factor in the game however was a quick showdown between Q10 and Kaemon. A couple of bad roles later it was just mop up for griffin. Good quick fun game, and hopefully next time I will be able to get the win! Looking forward to our next game!!

My second game was with Irate Giraffe. His Sonlen, Charos, and Eldgrim vs. 2 sets of obsidian guards, brunak, Marro Warriors, and a set of Rats. IG Quickly moved Charos forward, I tried to get my marro up high to strick from a distance to avoid the green dragon's counterstrike. IG knew what I was doing and closed in quickly on my Marro, taking em down. I moved forward with my Obsidian guards, big problem here though was their slowness. But, with 4 attack, they stood a pretty good chance of wearing down Charos. Brunak got in a swing or two but he didn't last long. IG walked away with the victory. Another quick fun game, thanks IG!!

my last game was a team game, me and my gf against Roland and his gf. Roland and alese were a pleasure to play, sorry we didn't finish the game!! They had a Jandar army of vikings, nilf, knigts, sentinels, and concan. We were fielding Vampires, Marro stingers, zombies (braaains :zombie:) one set of shades, and ma burq sa. Nilf fell to Cyprien's chilling touch, while the zombies were harrasing the knights and sentinels. Again this game was stopped due to it getting late, and me and my other still had a lot of driving to do. Lets definately do that again sometime!!

Boom, thanks for the beers :drunk:, sorry we didn't get the chance to play (again)!!

Dman, another scaper I didn't get to play. Which probably saved me another defeat. Next time man!!

Allskulls, ur on!!

And to all the scapers I got to meet but not play, Doc Savage, Xotli, Obsidianator, Hopefully I can get a game in with you guys somewhere down the road. Cheers!!

These are my two custom boards. The one with reeds, and the statue map, the statues were on the map but could be killed to put +1 attack on the unit that destroyed it. You can see the kid in the lower right has three of the statues on Braxas!

And here is obsidianator's army getting ready to face mine on my custom reed map.

I finally, mostly, caught up in my homework so I will be looking at unloading the camera tonight =) Is there any qualms about me loading it up onto youtube or something? Or would you rather me send it privately so everyone can keep their dignity hehe

I have to see how big the file is, but the easiest way to transfer it would to mail you a cd I would imagine.

Well to be fair I said I wouldn't post it, it's only 127mb. I thought there was a way to list videos privately on youtube, but I can upload it wherever you want allskulls or I could make the CDs and bring them to the tournament. No charge unless you want me to lightscribe burn a title on to it because I only have dvds of those type. I can try emailing as well, but some people have restrictions on email size.

Uh nm I thought that was awfully small, it got stopped and restarted near the very end. Its actually about 900mb hehe So upload is probably the best bet =)
