Armored Nilfheim (special thanks to King's Knight for the nail idea!)

http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/5870/29821697wd9.jpg

I've been wanting to put armor on this guy for a while, and then I saw King's Kight's rhino, and the press on nail armor, and bam, it hit me.

Armor is made of various sized disposable nails, rivets and tethers in putty(wish those had came out a little cleaner). And a nice red-red skin, dingy yellow underbelly, silver armor, gold rivets, brown tethers, bone claws, green eyes, and a wash.

I had planned on taking progress pictures of this guy, but I kind of sped through him once it started coming together.

Dumatef Guards and Viper repaint/reshape for DFW prize table:
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/3063/picture009ju4.jpg
http://img110.imageshack.us/img110/1179/picture002zb1.jpg

Dumatefs: Reshaped them, arms moved around and 2 of them twisted at the torso. Dark gray/green paint base. Brown beards, bone colored teeth and claws. Black wash. Dry brushed the skins with light green. The one of the far left was wet from reboiling when the picture was taken, that's why he's so glossy.

Viper: Twisted him a bit, and bent his arms down and behind him for a more menacing look. Red body, blue eyes, dingy yellow underbelly. Black wash.

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/4039/picture013fd9.jpg

Several different angles. I need to touch up the face with some highlights, though. Pretty happy with it overall.

Carr's body. Gun from another car to replace the sword. Parmenio's head (been wanting to use it for a while since the Achilles custom). Cut off the ponytail and puttied the remains. Blue jeans, white shirt, leather duster, boots, and tan skin. Topped it all off with a (too heavy) black wash.

This is a new Jandar Kyrie I made:
http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/8936/picture019ql1.jpg
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/5489/picture015bs7.jpg

Before Painting:
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/6439/picture001mr2.jpg

Wings came from Saylind, body from Spartacus, head and arms from this guy:
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/images/figures/Rotating/MKSO/MKSO_043.jpg

Had to cut Spartacus' head off at the chin, and carved a neck out of his chin. The new arms almost fit perfectly into the holes left after taking off Spart's arms.

Added wings onto the helm from Thorgrim.

Painted Jandar colors, painted wings white and gave them a gray wash, black wash everywhere else, and there you have it.

I really wanted to make Raelin look more at home with the new Samurai, so I modded a Tagawa Raelin.

Here are some pictures:
http://img361.imageshack.us/img361/561/1side1nn4.jpghttp://img86.imageshack.us/img86/3712/1frontft9.jpghttp://img401.imageshack.us/img401/7810/1side2cf6.jpg

Here she is, looking right at home with the samurai:
http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/836/1homezn1.jpg

She was actually pretty easy to do. I cut off the wings on her helmet, and cut the little raised portion off of the front. I cut the end off of her spear, and replaced it with Sgt. Drake's katana, making her spear into a nifty little naginata. The crescent on her helm was made out of pieces of a plastic drinking straw that I layered and glued together. I had this idea after messing around trying to make one out of putty, and I couldn't get it right. Paint job's pretty easy. Tan/orangish armor, purple leggings, neck and arm cloth. Black gaunts, shoulder armor, and helmet, all with black or gold accents. Light tan skin. Dark brown and silver on the naginata. Gold wings with black accents. Went over the whole thing with a light black wash.

Ok, so here are some pictures of the repaints/mods I did as gifts for people at DFW gamesday, as well as the cards’ backside image, which was too wide. 2 of the repaints were previous repaints that I had done that I touched up. I’ll get the cards up in my custom card thread sometime tomorrow.

I had planned on making my own custom card for this, but Karkadin has already made a pretty good Achilles card, and I'm sure he wouldn't mind you making one of these to use with his card. Who knows if I'll actually finish the card or not. I just really wanted to make an Achilles figure.

All of these have cards coming very, very soon in my custom card thread.

So here are some pictures of based D&D figures, to show size and basing methods, for some customs that can be found in my custom thread.

Here is detail of how I based the Huge Purple Worms for my Cephalapox custom:

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/9369/cephoh7.jpg

Basically 4 glyphs, glued together, with Malechi's custom base image glued on, sides painted heroscape base brown, and a coat of sealant.

And here is Cephalapox facing off against some orcs:

http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/706/cephshowdownxx0.jpg

And finally, here is Rajakarn, The Furnace and his Kilnlings. The Kilnlings are much smaller than I though they would be:

Nice customs JJ! I especially like the Marro on the Mammoth. I may have to keep an eye out for the elephant. How much was it?

Widigo
July 8th, 2006, 05:11 PM
Those look nice. I like the Mim repaint, the relin is a little off, I like the idea but the horns ae oversized, IMO. The cyborg is awesome, I may have to buy a set of Zettian just to make him. How did you make the Marro spider?

justjohn
July 8th, 2006, 05:41 PM
The marro spider:

1 Ne-Gok-Sa. I cut of the legs at the pelvis, cut off the arms beneath the shoulder pads.

The arms came off of a MageKnight zomie, cut them off, filed them, and glued them onto NGS' torso.

Then I made the chest plate out of green stuff, let it cure a little bit, then formed it around the chest.

The place where all the legs meet is a lump of putty that i smoothed out to meet with the torso. The legs are arms and legs off of a few MageKnight skeletons, cut them off at the hip and chest, but kept the shoulder/hip bubs attached because they made good joints for the legs to meet the putty hub on the body. The pointed claws are the tips of toothpicks that I cut and filed to fit on the ends of the legs.

The hair is strings of putty put onand smashed down. I dropped this figure when the putty wasn't all of the way dried, and it sort of smashed down one side of her hair, but I didn't feel like fooling with that task again, so I just left it be.

Mixed white and tan and a touch of yellow to make a dingy bone color, and painted all of the flesh/bone that color. Touched all the metal parts with a gold color, and the hair with a light grey. Went over the armor and hair with a black wash, and went over the flesh/bone with a red-brown wash.

Way to much work, would go into trying to find the figs for me to duplicate. Nice job though. How much putty comes in one batch. What does one batch cost. A batch would be one pack.

justjohn
July 8th, 2006, 05:50 PM
I'm not sure on the ounces, but it comes with a good bit, and depending on brand, between 3-7 bucks a pack.

Oh, and ry, that mammoth was a dollar on the clearance isle at Wal-mart couple of months ago. Not sure on the exact name of it (I don't play/follow ygo, sorry I can't be more help.)

On the raelin, I wanted the horns to be that big, along the lines of the bad guy from Legend.

Widigo
July 8th, 2006, 06:09 PM
I think it is a Graveyard Mammoth, but my cards are still in Alabama so im not sure. 3 $ is not bad. As far as ounces could you do 10 customs with it that each requiared a low amount of it. Also how fast does it dry, i would not want to be carving something and have it dry before i finish.

Would the Purple Worm fit on a 2-space base?
Maybe bleed over a tiny bit, but would it be playable?
Because how does a 4-hex figure move? Have you discussed this BIG effect on that neat custom?

I want it to be playable in case I get 2 of those neat figs.

LilNewbie
July 17th, 2006, 05:10 PM
Love the 4-hex bases, JJ and the Purple Worms look great on them. Heck, all your figures look great! Those Purple Worm figures are begging for a Dune custom. :D

justjohn
July 17th, 2006, 09:37 PM
Thanks guys.

Reaper, they bleed over way to bad. To compensate for the 4 hex, which would move just as any other 2 base figure would, counting movment from one space of the base, start to finish, I touched up burrow, and also added to their movement.

Sacred Granite Guards
http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/5553/stoneswk6.jpg

Really simple repaint. Hit the entire body with a grey mix (almost dead on with the color of stone hexes). Touched the old flames with green, to make them look like grass. A wash of black and brown, with a touch of jetdry (this really did make a difference with the wash). Finally hit them with a light coat of matte finish to give them that HS figure light sheen. They aren't connected to those bases yet, btw. I just had them stuck onto them while I applied the washes/coats, hence the 2 with peg-feet.

Painted one of my Glaciers to match them, and a custom was born. you can see it in my custom cards thread.

I have several other mods/repaints coming as I whip up stuff for the DFW prize table.

http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/7047/picture012sl2.jpg
http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/9822/picture013la7.jpg

Marobus is basically 3 marden heads attached to one marden body. Filled the gaps with putty. Painted it all a dark cream base, then hit it with a black.slightly red wash. Matte finish.

Bae Pi is the samurai with the topknot (which was cut off and and the head was lightly sanded). Cut the sword that was held close to his body off, along with the hand, and cut off both arms at the shoulders. Repositioned the arms. Cut of Drake's hand and Katana off and attached them to the samurai. Cut off sword scabards from the back, and used putty to resculpt the back of the sash, as well as the folds in the front of the robe, where the sword had been. Dark and light green clothing. Flesh color. Silver on the swords. Black wash (which came out a lot more prominent in the face than the pictures show). Matte finish.

I actually thought about doing that but realized I do not know too many people very well here :PThese are not just your run of the mill novelty here. These are some damned fine customs measured by any standards. Draku Mathu is one of my favorite custom cards and repaints. He has a drag2 ability that is similar to carry. He also has a smash together ability that lets him slam two figures that he has previously dragged together and it is just a thematic special. The Marberus figure was exquisite and I hate myself for not doing better in the tournament as I would have loved owning that one.

Heh. I know that GB: its why I said "Playable" up front. The cards I had in mind were meant to be balanced and quality additions to the customs list rather than simple run of the mill just-for-fun cards. It just meant they would have had fun references and inside jokes on them which JJ did include on several of those great DFW cards.

For example my idea for a JJ card included a name of John J Cloud or possibly McCloud. John should get the reference in the last name though I'm not sure others would. I did not have all the abilities thought up for him yet but I felt a variation of the Survivor ability Annerios came up with back in the day would fit well for an ability called Just John which would boost the stats on the card if John was the last figure in your army. Obviously not yet as nice as the cards JJ made for the DFW but hopefully you'll get the gist of what I meant anyway :)

I have several other mods/repaints coming as I whip up stuff for the DFW prize table.

justjohn this is long overdue, but I just wanted to thank you again for these guys. I was so happy that I finished in 2nd place at the October Tourney because I was able to snag them off of the prize table. My son and I both love them and play with them regularly. :)

BTW, I got my container from wisinger that I left at the facility and it had another smaller container in it. wisinger said that it was yours. If you'll PM me your address I'd be happy to send it to you. ;)

Before painting and moving the wings farther up his back so they sat correctly:

Wings came from Saylind, body from Spartacus, head and arms from this guy:
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/images/figures/Rotating/MKSO/MKSO_043.jpg

Had to cut Spartacus' head off at the chin, and carved a neck out of his chin. The new arms almost fit perfectly into the holes left after taking off Spart's arms.

Added wings onto the helm from Thorgrim.

Painted Jandar colors, painted wings white and gave them a gray wash, black wash everywhere else, and there you have it.

JJ,

Some ideas for his abilities:

Stealth Flying or Flying

Hammer of Jandar
Before moving, choose one of the abilities for the Hammer of Jandar which will remain in effect for the rest of the turn:
1. Justice. Special Attack. Attack 4. Range 1.
2. Retribution. Special Attack. Attack 6. Range 1. Retribution can only affect figures that follow Utgar.
3. Vengeance. Special Attack. Attack 3. Range 5.

Sovereign Armor
When defending against a non-adjacent attack, you may roll Jandar Valkyrie Dice. Each Jandar symbol rolled counts as an additional shield.

Very cool fig!!

1. Yes we do enjoy them very very much! :D My son keeps asking me why I don't make different ones out of our Obsidians. :P

2. I have no idea what Wisinger and Lilwis's prize was. I try not to ask them what they do away from game day. There's too many quarters usually involved.

3. The container I'm talking about is much bigger than the one Rev gave out. It's more of a school box sized container. I thought Wisinger told me it was yours. Maybe I was wrong. It came packed with paper towels as if someone had packed custom painted units in it though. Maybe he just assumed it was yours?

4. If I don't win one of your prizes I may just have to jack someone with a sock full of pennies. 8)

Custom coming soon for Quickdraw Johnston. Plucked from death and given a pair of futuristic heavy irons, in return for service to Vydar.

Black wash.

Achilles is Parmenio's body and Saylind's head. Shield is 2 of the round shielded MS viking hero's shield, cut into little more than halves, scoop cut, and glued together. Spear is a toothpick with a spear head bit from, I think, a MK figure of some sorts.

Cool we got a green Dumutef and a nice red viper. One looks toxic green to me while the other looks like it might be sporting warning colors because of its poisonous bite! :) You might even borrow a little from Dragonslayer's MOAM if he does not mind. I'll bet quite a few people would like to see a custom based on his Elite Rubin Viper on the prize table:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c9/Dragonslayer_1966/scapetalk_three.jpg

By the way how hot do you need to get the figures in order for them to keep their new shape when you twist or otherwise reposition them? I'm always afraid I'll melt my figures into a fine soup in the hot water! Or did you use the heat technique at all? I cannot tell if there are any cut marks on those figures.

That Nilfheim repaint/mod is great! I mean it is really awesome. I would love to make one of those but I really don't want to buy another large hero pack just to get another Nilf.

Any plans on a card?

Nilfeim is amazing. I have to make him. I will try and most likely fail miserably. He looks like he's for Ugar. Is he? He fits perfectly.

A marro hero a top a Yu-Gi-Oh mammoth skeleton, repainted the both and added some back detail:

Nice! Even though some people say Yu-Gi-Oh heroscape wouldn't work, it sort of could... :stir:
Just use more figures like that! It would be kinda cool. I used to play Yu-Gi-Oh and now I think some monsters would look cool there.

Awesome work man

For Nilf what did you use to make the armor? I would love to attempt to make some armor like that.

You have inspired me to go pull out my old box of warhammer stuff and see what I can make up :)

Glad you guys like it.

The armor is fake press-on accrylic nails. I got the idea for the nail armor from... god I can't remember who, it's been so long. But he had a badass armored rhino that he used the nails on, so all the props go to him for the innovative idea.

As far as a card for the worms, there is one. If you click the link in my sig for my customs, it under the heading for customs using D&D minis.

That dragon is awsome. And if you ever make an Achilles card he should have range. I mean look at that spear.

Yes, they are actually called Hell Bovine and roam a small farmstead under the rule of the Cow King. Steal a boy's wooden leg, put in a magic box with a Book of Town Portal and you can go there and see them.

JustJohn these customs are awesome. My favorite customs are the modded pieces, not just transplated figures from other games. Your Achilles and your Jandar Kryie were my favorites.
