It does look like a good turnout. I will be running it and not playing as I want to totally test the new system.

There was no response to my hotdog bar idea. Should I just get a bunch of chips and dips?

ALSO!!!! If you want to save time please download and fill out your score sheet for this event listed on the first post.

Hotdog bar would be great - we should have enough $ to cover it after location costs, right?

yeah that sounds fine....

I hesitate to even bring this next item up:

Any chance of this being a semi kid friendly environment? Meaning kids that would not be playing in the tournament being around. I am just trying to plan accordingly and not assume anything.

We prefer the more humane "electrical" leashes. Y'know that ones that administer a little shock to your youngins when they get too far away. Or just randomly?

Long time no visit guys. Sorry.

I've been very swamped with real life of late and I just haven't had a minute to even think about Scape. Now I check this thread and see that I'm bringing four maps.

My only problem with that is that I will not have time to part them out. I can probably part out two maps before the event day, but there's no way I can do four. Why? Because every night this week I am working at my son's school's book fair. If anyone can step up to the plate and help me out I would really appreciate it. If not I'll just have to bring all of my terrain bins and we'll just sort it out on Saturday morning.

Sorry to be difficult. :(

Is there any plan for any social gatherings related to this event? Does anybody want to hit the Fox and Hound after the tourney? How many hours do we think this thing will last? My clubhouse director contacted me to see if we can be out by 7pm as there is a groupe who are desparate due to losing the venue they were going to have their event at last minute... Can we be out by 7 PM if we start noonish?

Can I get a clarification on the use of the Glyph of Kelda for tournament play?

Is it legal to "burn off" this glyph by stepping on it with an uninjured unit to deny its use to the other player?

I saw this strategy several times in the last tournament.

I don't think we can be out by 7PM. We are having more people than ever...more maps than ever before...and I would personally hate to rush the prize ceremony and gabbing that goes on afterwards.

What if we just use the DCI software that is super fast and requires very little time between rounds?

October 17th, 2007, 12:44 PM
It seems to me the last event ended a little after 7.

But as MarkWars said there will be more folks this time.

If 50 people show up, how many rounds is that?

Will there be a top 4 single elimintaion thing at the end like last time?

So if set up starts at 11 and finishes in an hour, then start by 12.

That leaves enough time for 5 rounds + top 4, but no time for prizes or clean up.

I'm all for helping people out by trying to hurry things along, but not at the cost of actually eliminating valued aspects/traditions of the DFW event.

I would think with all his tournament running experience, Grungebob would be in the best position to know if we can be done by 7:00 or not.

If my memory serves, the team tourney ended about 6:45 p.m., and the previous individual one was over about 6:35 p.m. I think we're OK if we start on time and do not dawdle. But, if being "over" means "cleaned up and cleared out," then I'd say, "No way short of a miracle."

Just a quick note for new comers to our event. The first post in this thread contains all of the data you need (I believe). Including some info on what to bring with you (your army figures, cards, dice, markers, and a prize for the prize table). Please take a minute to read thru this post. If you have a question, concern, or issue, please PM either myself, grungebob, or rychean.

1 hr rounds + 10 min. set-up time in-between = 5:40, which would leave us 20 minutes for prizes and clean-up.

12 would be a lot better - I'll try to be there as early as possible to help out as much as possible.

I'm going to have to target one of your tournaments on a weekend when there isn't a bike race.
Especially when that bike race is in northeast Oklahoma, and I haven't had the chance to preride the course yet (which I'll be doing on Saturday afternoon).

Maybe it wasn't a Dallas tourney because we haven't used Kelda (we did in worst army I think) since Feb 06

I feel victim to this in the Feb 06 tourney just not paying attention. My opponent burned the healer with a Swog (not possible by rule of the glyph, but I totally missed it)

By rule, you can't ever burn the Kelda as only a wounded hero may ever step on it. So, if it occurred, it was definitely in violation of the rules.

Besides, Kelda is not in our glyph pool

I looked at the veggie trays thinking of all you gals that are watching your figures, but the quality was poor... SO!! Anybody that wants to bring some veggies to graze on, you won't be able to depend on me for this because I won't get another chance to get to the store..

DON"T FORGET TO BRING YOUR OWN DRINKS!

Also, we are going to use our old method of running this thing with Rychean's laptop and DCI rules. It won't affect game play at all and will be consistant with what we've done in the past.

My apologies, Finrod: I totally missed it. I am not really involved with the coordination of this thing. I would have never recommended the healer for this tournament.

Glyph of Kelda, Page 15 2nd Edition:
Only figures with one or more Wound Markers may stop on this glyph.

I think we are going to have problems with the glyphs in general. If we have 20 maps, we either some paper / cardboard substitutes or we need 20 SOTM sets to cover the glyphs: Ulaniva-unique attack +1;
Crevcor-common attack +1; Oreld-Intercept order marker

Do we have this covered or not? I can bring all my glyphs and we can try to sub some in or whatevers but we really need a game plan on the glyphs.

Two days to go. Time to enter trash-talk mode.

Ahem.

We should also try to think about when and where we want to have the February tourney. Plenty of folks will be asking at the end of the day. ;)

Trash-talking time, eh? Well, I'll just say that I am DETERMINED to at least be in the top half this time around! My noobness is wearing off I hthink, & I've planned my current team more than any team EVER! So yeah, most of you don't know me anyway because I'm relatively quiet around here, but you WILL know me, & FEAR, VERY WELL after this Saturday.

I plan on doing significantly better than last time. This time I aim for at least one win. ...Not really trash talk, I know, but I don't have much to be cocky about. I still think I would have won that first match last tourney if we hadn't ran out of time.

Hey Squadshed, what's up? Yeah, I'm glad I won that match, but to be honest, I would've liked to have been able to play it out to the end. To me, that's always more fun that having to quit because of time, win or lose.

I think we are going to have problems with the glyphs in general. If we have 20 maps, we either some paper / cardboard substitutes or we need 20 SOTM sets to cover the glyphs: Ulaniva-unique attack +1;
Crevcor-common attack +1; Oreld-Intercept order marker

Do we have this covered or not? I can bring all my glyphs and we can try to sub some in or whatevers but we really need a game plan on the glyphs.

There was no commitment.

Imax was mentioned as someone who could do it because he had done it in the past.

Jonathon has made paper glyphs for a Houston Tourney that worked well.

I think Velenne also had paper glyphs that worked well.

If noone can supply 25(?) sets of paper glyphs by Saturday, is it too late to tell everyone to bring their own set of glyphs?

And wisinger, thank you for the thanks and all of your hard work endlessly reposting the first post! :D

I will bring my own set of glyphs. So, you guys only need to worry about the other 19 sets :) .
But as I said before, we should encourage people to bring their own glyphs. I also think that the organizers/map builders should bring a couple dozens of small plates to put the glyphs there for each map so that they can recollect their glyphs easily after the tournament.

I hereby take ownership of the glyph problem. I've just printed out 45 sets of glyphs. I'll take 'em home and paste the lot on cardstock I have for similar purposes (comic backing boards - works great), cut them out, and bring them along.

They're not the prettiest, but they'll work, and they'll be done quickly.

You can bring whatever you like; your army stays the same through out the 5 games you play. Things are going to be a bit tight on time so I don't know that there will be too many chances for pick up games.

Ok, just got on here to read what was what (yea, the day before the BIG tournament, I know, I know) and saw that we are to print out a page. May I ask if anyone can bring an extra one if they will for me? I am sorry but my printer is not working and well, yea, I am checking to see what is needed of me the day BEFORE (my bad). I thank you in advance and if not, I will learn to write fast...LOL. As for the trash talking? I wish everyone the best and I look forward to playing against you (and for those I do not play against, I look forward to seeing you). I actually think I could have played in this one and we still would have been on time, but I'm glad I didn't because I was able to totally stay on top of things. After everyone left, DMG and I took turns watching my son while cleaning the place. We found a negation marker and Dr Livingston left a couple of map print-outs. The next group to rent the place stopped by and saw the note I left in the window on one of those bright pink note cards and so the called my wife and got the key. By cleaning the place ourselves (which saves them money on cleaning fees) and making way for the next group, we help our chances of setting this up again for the good price we got today!!

Close. It's actually by Jonathan, from our Houston group.

The Houston Four had a fantastic time. Thanks to the Dallas crew for making us welcome. Although it seemed a bit coincidental that almost half our games ended up against each other... What's up, Dallas? Afraid of Houston? hmmm? :P

I ended 3-2, as well, taking 12th place... which ws still high enough on the prize list to snag a new Swarm of the Marro from Hasbro! Unbelievable!

My games were against DrLivingston (loss), Sweetcurse (win), Liam (loss), Eric aka Jonathan's brother who I can't remember if he has a screen name (win), and Squadshed (win). Except for the first game, where DrL took out Q9 with a single shot from an Airborne Elitist, every game was down to the wire tough and competitive. Great, great fun.

My army was Q9, Nakitas, Isamu and two squads of Gorillinators.

On the way back, the Houston gang hit a few Wal-marts out in the fringes of Dallas and Houston. Charles (OmegaX017) found a 1st Edition Master Set! (sparklies!) We saw 3 WMs in a row with NO Nakitas! We found one with the uniques from Wave 7, but no commons. :( And... our last stop was the Wal-Mart of Doom, about which we'll have many stories to tell, when the time is right... ::shudder::

LongHeroScaper, Toby, and I are all safely home in Arkansas now, with this trophy with some kind of foreign flag painted on it. <grin>

Seriously, we had a great time and enjoyed the fine Texas hospitality. It was a joy to play and a hoot to win, something which I never expected and find somewhat embarrassing. I got to play some great opponents and just happened to get the right opponents on the right maps at the right time. The dice being kind didn't hurt, either.

I had a great time. Thanks a lot everyone for making it happened. Everything about this trip was great: the ride with RevDyer and Toby, the tournament, Fox and Hound, the ride with the champion and Toby. We set up a map in the motel room and played 'til 2:30am and had about 5-6 hour sleep before going to the tournament. And then Toby and I played a game when we came back from the tournament. I went 2-3 (now beside Jonathan, I also hate Velene and Dr. Livingston, and a guy from Houston whose nickname I do not know). I was totally demolished against them.
Anyway, RevDyer won the tournament and brought the trophy to Arkansas, hehe...! When he brings it back to Texas next time, it will be covered all over by Arkansas' painted flag and white hawk! I came home with IMax's dice bag, and the wonderful gift from RevDyer, yoohoo! Thank you very much, Rev! And IMax, I'll let you know if I will actually consider suing you for putting dark mojo to all the stuff you sell/give :) .
Thanks again!

Being my first tournament, and I wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm really glad I went. I met a lot of great people, and really look forward to the next event, whenever that may be. I'll check the boards to see what's coming up next in the DFW area.

I consider myself lucky to have gone 4-1 on the day, (good enough for 5th), but more fortunate to have made some new friends. (BTW, I used my winnings to buy my wife dinner, which should get me permission to come back next time.)

Thanks again to everyone. Until next time...

The Houston Four had a fantastic time. Thanks to the Dallas crew for making us welcome. Although it seemed a bit coincidental that almost half our games ended up against each other... What's up, Dallas? Afraid of Houston? hmmm? :P

::shudder::

Tisk tisk tisk. X01 no 7.

Well lets see if i can rember all the games and such. i placed lucky number 13.....

my army was a joke really i figured it wouldn't do well at all needless to say it supprised me.

Anubian Wolves x5
Khosumet the Darklord
Tarn Viking Warriors

my games were....
1. Lilwis (win)
2. ___ (win)
3. ___ (loss)
4. Liam_l (loss)
5. Jonathan (win)

as you can see i'm drawing some blanks... (blanks will be filled in when memory comes back on line)

My poor fiance went 2-3, but to her credit had to face Q9 in every single army she faced. C'mon folks, it's time to give the big robot a rest. :?

I am happy to say that Q9 was pretty much soundly trounced all over the place at the Tree Town Open:)

There was one Q9 army that went 5-1. I lost to it in the last round. No Q9 in the top 5 though.

He got kicked around here pretty good too. Rodriquez being the only top finisher having to use the "crutch".

some marro's, some robots....and AE's! oh and the poor Isamu...my only melee character.
I seriously debated takin zettians again but I really wanted to see how this army werked in actual play..and a 4-1 record I consider extremely good esp since I had to play both ye and wis, who I've had iffy successes with in the past.

it was a fun army to play actually and having to play on that friggin ice map twice killed my nerves!
btw as I recall it was q10 and marro's who had some fun taking down the stingers and kaemon.

ok I got a bit of time so here's a summary of battle reports:

my army: Q9, Q10, AE, Marro, Isamu

*note* game 1 and 2 were on that friggin snow map with the narrow elevation
1st game: Rychaen(5xstingers 2x rats and kaemon? I believe)
this was the longest game of the day..all the way down to the one minute mark. Ry took down Q9, but not until afterhe took down a bunch of stingers and rats, q10 got up into the glaciers and took down rest of the rats and than got Kaemon leaving stome stingers,
marro's took out a few stingers who had come around sides.
game won

game 2: Wisinger(charo's, Krav's and I dont remember what else)

charo's and q9 duked it out up top while krav's were taking potshots at q10, marro's. charo's disengaged and left an opening for q9 to engage the krav's, and that was the turning point kravs went down in 2 rounds, while charo's went down at about the same time.
game won

after those 2 games my nerver were shot, Wis and Dave are extremely good players and I've lost more against them than I've won in the past.

Game 3:Todd(kravs laglor, raelin, q10 and samurai I think)
this game was a knockdown for sure. Todd is a verra good player and made some verra bad mistake, q9 got raelin and than got shot down by kravs while tryin to take out laglor, q10...repeat..
Ae drop and basically get wiped out in short order.
marro's move in and take out a few samurai and a krav but than get flamed, Isamu moves in and just lays down and gets fried.
Game Lost

Game 4:Georgio(Q9, nikita, kaemon, rats, something else) on a road map
rats grap glyphs...q9 moves in and takes some down, gets engaged with rats, q10 moves in and takes shots at q9, rats.
AE drop take out a rat and than hit up q9 for 3 wounds. Q10 goes down to rats and kaemon(who got a few wounds from q10). Marro's start wiping rats offa Q9 and nikita's have started moving in. Kaemon and q9 duke it out and Kaemon gets flamed, Nikita's move around and hit up some marro's who turn around and hit back and get wiped. Q9 deals with Nikita's....5 rounds later!!! aye 5 full rounds later we're still trading back and forth when the final nikita goes down!
Game won

Game 5 vs liam(raelin, nilf, kravs, marro warriors, rats. on hunkered and bunkered.
Raelin hits high ground, Q9 moves behind the tree's and takes shots at nilf. Ae drop and surround raelin and she finally goes down but giving the krav's enough time to start moving up, AE go down and krav's get high ground, by this time q10 had moved around dealt with the rats and some marro's and was now "hiding" under the overhang. Q9 had dealt with nilf(poor dragon never got anywhere before he got melted) and had moved to the overhang also. Krav's by this time had moved to the ladder's to get los on the Robots...a few trades back and forth, and than q9 steps forth and starts plinking at them...and shortly later the 2 krav's whiff(with high ground no less!!!) on 1 shot hits from q9.
*note* this was actually a fun game to play, but I've played liam before and the games are always a blast.
Game won

I was really looking forward to play against Rev or AAhz armie's as both look painful enough(Rev brought a ton of 4th mass and some sentinels.
AAhz took shades and zombies, and in a game earlier I watched him take nilf and another hero from a guy's army using them)

and a more humourous note..and Arkansaw'en took 1st place and a Georgia boy took 3rd, poor texans!!

cheers

Top 4:

Revdyer (5-0; playing his GenCon Army: 4x4th Mass and 2xSentinels)

InfinityMax (4-1; 2xglads, 3xblasts, Zettians, Warden 816 )

Rodriquez (4-1; Q9, Q10, AE, Isamu, MWs)

Aahzmandius (4-1; 5xZombies; 2xShades)

I think the best news to come out of this was that Q9 did not fare so well. I hope this will somewhat weaken the crutch of Q9 based armies in the tournament community. However, even more amazing is that KMA and Raelin are nowhere to be found in the top 4. KMA, Raelin, and Q9 are all great units, but it is a good thing to introduce some diversity into army builds.

Special kudos to Aahz for running a non-ranged army. Well done!

I wish I could have been there (well, at least longer than the 10 minutes that I popped in...).

Rev, thank you for poking in the eye the saying "Good guys finish last".

To be honest, I shouldn't have had them in there. By the time I was counting on Zettians, it was all over. Either the combo got the job done, or I was hosed. They took a couple shots at Cyprien in my second game, but other than that, they stood in back and did their nails. I won't use them again.

I was curious what the over all feeling was for the maps used at the tournament. I have heard there was problems with one map in particular, but were there any other gripes or praises for other maps? Were any of them BOV nomination worthy? I was kind of hoping that we would have a decent crop of maps being nominated to the BOV (nationwide) after NHSD if they so deserved it.

Broken Skyline got into BOV during the process of setting up this tournament. H&Ds is, of course, already in. Pine Tree is going to be shot down by Velenne.

No offense, to Jonathan, but Frozen Stair is simply not worthy, IMO.

Spring is in the Air was a very good play; a possible contender for UPC's Battlefields of Valhalla.

I played on my new map, Moss Creek Road; I thought it played very well; (yeah it was the first time I played on it ;-) ) but, hey, I am probably biased :-D

I didn't play on any others. Oddly enough, I won the two games I had on my maps; hmmmm imagine that.

I played on Highways & Dieways twice and despite losing both times, still love it. H&D is my favorite tournament map of all time.

I played on Pine Tree once and, again no offense, but I'm not very excited. I'm still open to liking it, so I'm going to play on it at home a couple more times. I could be missing something.

The other maps I played on were Marr Highway and Frozen Stair which have each been spoken for in their own way by now.

So unfortunately, I have no new nominations to offer the BoV. :/

Yeah, that Blue Krug and his daddy (MarkWars) will live in your nightmares for at least the next year (let you know next year, if it is longer then 1 year). He is one mean SOB, and one heck of a Scape player.

Thanks to all for the awesome time! GBob did a great job hosting and keeping us all on our toes. I went 3-2 in my games, but felt like a 5-0 day. The trip back and forth was literally, a "trip." Finrod, Jonathan, Omega and I had a great time talking and hanging out, hitting Wal-Marts along the way and geeking out the whole time. There nothing quite like spending 10+ hours in a car with fellow geeks. I doubt we left a topic uncovered in the universe, from my adventure as an 10 year old with a felon, to Hiro's likely underwear color and choices. And of course there was the dreaded "Wal Mart incident" that we just as soon would love to forget.

My battles were all heated and narrow. A tough crowd to be sure. Although as destiny would of course have it, I had to face two of my fellow Houstonians. 40 players and the four of us still fought each other. Like Jonathan said, too afraid to let us compete. He he.

My army was:
Raelin, KMA, Rats x2, 4th x2 and the EOV.

My first battle was versus InfinityMax, the man genius. His army of Blastatrons and Gladiatrons was very tough. The first three rounds went by without any casualties on either side. But the Gladiatrons super defense rolls began to finally whittle me down. No matter how many attacks I made, he blocked EVERYTHING. The game continued with him dealing with the rats and when the time was up I had 2 sets of the 4th, the KMA and Raelin. Imax had the Zettians, Warden, Blastatrons x1 and Glads x2.
We both agreed that had the game gone on the result would have been quite spectacular. It was unfortunate not to finish the game since it was still very fresh. Result, Loss. :(

Second game was vs Finrod. He had "The Crutch," ;) Nakitas (WM flooders), G'Nators x2 and Isamu (mini crutch). The game was fast and furious. My snakes took out his Nators and two Nakitas then were killed. Finally, I had a squad of rats, Raelin, KMA and 4th x2. He had Q9 and one Nakita left, but managed to get smoke powder like (not an exaggeration) 10 times in a row. I wasted so many rounds with nothing to shoot it was supremely annoying. So, I lost, although I had Raelin, KMA and 4th x1 plus two rats vs Finny's Q9 (on his last wound nonetheless) and one Nakita. He did great with that smoke powder. Again, loss.

Third game was vs Brandon. He had an army of samurai, Izumi, Kozuke, Tagawa, Kaemon and Carr (who should totally have a katana by the way). This game was scary with all that counterstrike. It was long and hard battle in a narrow space but in the end all my range paid off vs the samurai. Result, win.

Fourth game was vs Jonathan on the dreaded ice map. This game came down to sheer numbers. We both could only fit one figure at a time in the narrow path. My EOV did damage early to Iskra but her healing power kept bringing her back from the brink, Very fortunately for me, the Retchets never came up. So, I kept choking the pass with rats while the 4th took shots through the ice slits. Dan did a number on my 4th guys but they still took him out. All in all this was my second hardest game after the first with Imax. Result, win.

My last game was vs Chad (dunno if he has an account here) on the same ice map. He had a ton of Stingers, Raelin and the Hive. I was very fortunate that the EOV frenzied quite a bit and took out a few Stingers, Raelin and put four wounds on the hive. After a long battle in the narrow pass, the 4th again managed to take the stingers one by one. Result, win.

Funny statistic, I never had to roll defense on the KMA, and they were activated only once in the whole tourney. Thanks again for having us and hopefully next time I'll place better...if only I don't have to deal with a million smoke powder grenades!

well i only had 1 game on that map and it was the second where i had to swap tables. i'd have to say it seemed fairly balanced to me.... even with my opponent getting the AE drop before the start of round 1 and his grenades taking out almost 2 squads of wolves before i even got to my first marker. but with the army i played it really didn't make me have to do any real adjustments, the extra places to hide when i had low attack numbers was rather nice. all said and done i'd give is about a 7.5/10 seen better played on worse.

I didn't get to play that map, and I really wanted to get a game there. It has a really cool aesthetic and a great over/under tactics thing working.

Ditto. I was really itching to run my Gorillinators up those ladders/steps. But it was not to be. :(

Ditto for me as well; I really wanted to try that one out. I am sure I will soon.

I not only played that map, I brought and built both of them. It's a nice map that I hope to not bring and build to future tournaments. :P

I saw several great games played out on this map during the tournament. That said, the game that I played on it was less than exciting. I got lucky and had my AE drop on the first turn. I placed them on the top platform. They were able to rain down lead and grenades into my opponent's start zone and the game never really got anywhere. It was only a matter of turns before all of his samurai were taken down.

It was just a combination of a lucky drop versus an army that really wasn't geared to handle an immediate ranged bombardment like that.

This seems to be a continual problem with castle maps that also happen to be tourney-sized. Maybe you could move the start zones to the "hunkered" side?

Ya all the castle maps are liike that- even Broken Skyline (which I love). Changing the start zones wouldn't make a difference since I had the same exact scenario as Dignan happen to me on Highways and Dieways. The result was the same as well- never really got out of my starting zone before I was completely decimated. I think that's more of a strength of the AE and rolling first init than a weakness of a map.

I hate the AE for this reason. I hate that they can decimate you on the first turn of the game....and on the other side I could use them to decimate someone else on the first turn of the game. It would be a shallow victory for me and I wouldn't feel like I earned it by out-playing my opponent.

Well, it depends on the size of your army - if you can squeeze them all onto one side of the start zone on Broken Skyline, the AE Can only get 1 or 2. For most amies, though, you're right. And if the AE drop and you don't get initiative, the AE usually get hosed instead. Seems pretty fair. Painful, but fair.

It is true with the A.E. whether it is a castle map or not. markwars dropped the A.E. on me (without initiative) on the first turn at GenCon and threw grenades into a bunch of 4th Mass. Twelve guys quickly became five and I thought the game was over. But, as the dice would have it, four of the 4th Mass then took out all four of the A.E., even though they had height...bang, bang, bang, bang...and the game was on again.

I dunno. There's a counter to EVERYTHING in the game, so while you may rake one army across the map another will hand you your behind.

????? why, they are cute, cuddly, and come 4 to a squad for the mere price of 40pt's. how can you not get a set of 3 squads for every competitive game you ever play?????

Who got the signed Woo?

I have concern. I put an in-the-package Woo w/a signed by CVN card in a plastic sleeve out on the table.

When we did the prize table, I still saw a Woo but I did not see the sleeved signed card.

Did someone else bring a Woo?

Who got the signed Woo?
