View Full Version : Jack o' Blades & GreyOwl's Customs - Symbiotes

I'm creating a new thread since these customs were a collaborative effort between Jack o' Blades and myself. We took on making generic versions of most of the Marvel symbiotes that can bond with any figure. We thought this would be a nice alternative to specific instances of bonding, like Carnage or Venom. They are meant to be played with different colored tokens (wound markers) instead of normal figures.

THIS, would be why I've been so quiet lately in the Marvel sections..

Ahhh, I've waited so long for this day :D
Oh jeeze, lol, can't stop smiling. :D :D :D

Hey, you have Toxin (well, his symbiote)! YAY! TOXIN FTW!

Those are quite cool, I don't think these are a replacement for figures like Venom and such, but neat add ons and could make for some very cool scenarios.

Anyways, can't wait to try some, are you guys going to be making tokens for them? As long as you can make one good blob, then you can tint it to the different colors.

Well, they aren't exactly replacements. Just think of it as part of the Symbiote Suit that ?detached? itself or was seperated by researchers, for well, research. Then, the seperated piece escaped and that's what these are...of course, if we never get the other Symbiotes, then they represent them.

Glad to hear you guys like 'em :D

Wow - quite impressive - and Lotus is right, would make for a really cool scenario. I'm dying to try these out, I just have to read through them all first :D

For the playing pieces, I was going to use repainted wound markers as the symbiote tokens. But now I'm thinking I may try to make a "symbiote blob" out of clay and then cast it out of plastic. I could make several and paint them the different colors. I'm not sure how difficult that would be.

Have yet to read all of this but I am digging it! Love to see collaborative work. Got some top secret collaborations going on myself 8)

For the record, I think painting a blob of clay is easier than those wound makers - what a pain... :D

And GreyOwl/Jack O Blades, these are amazing! Definately submit for TNT, as they are a group project i think you can submit one already. :D

Jack O' Blades, which one should we submit first? I think the 4 that bond with Hybrid should be submitted as a group, but I'm not sure if that group should go first. I see a few things that need to be cleared up on some of them. Some of the powers make it seem like the symbiote can do them, when in fact they should only apply when attached to a host.

Also, does anyone have a reference pic of a symbiote in "blob" form (unattached to a host)? Or if you have an issue reference, I have access to almost all the Spider-Man comics.

Hmm, I say the Black. It's the first one we made, and I also think it's the one that people are more familliar with.

As for clearing up, I can't quite tell on what needs to be...share?

--It might be that right now I'm kind of out of it

For example, the Phantom Walk on the Yellow Symbiote makes it seem like the symbiote alone can do that. I think it should only apply to the host when the symbiote is bonded to it. I meant things like that as far as clearing up the wording.

I knew what you meant, haha. I just didn't know where.

As for that, yea, we should prolly do that.

Here's a prototype of a symbiote figure I sculpted. The base looks like a hemisphere from this angle, but it really is a "random blob shape". This one is clay, but I plan on casting them out of semi-flexible plastic so it is somewhat elastic, and then painting for the different symbiotes. I can't decide if the final one should be put on a Heroscape base or left as is...?

I will also be updating the cards later to today to correct some typos and fix some ambigous text. I'll probably also remove the part about not using a figure, since now I have a figure. :)

All the cards in the first post are now updated to correct typos and clarify wording.

Just noticed the blob pic - if you keep them like that, you can actually stick them on the HS base of the figure they've joined with.

Cool stuff!

Nice! I think it would be better to base it...

GreyOwl

The only reason I had second thoughts about basing it was because it would artifically limit where the figure could fit, whereas the non-based version could fit into tighter spots. I would think the symbiote could fit into almost anything. But then again, the base is more consistent with the rest of the game.

I might just try to dye some sticky tack - that way you can smear it all over the character once they get enhanced :D

Where do you guys come up with such cool looking stuff like this. Just idea here some miniatures that could be repainted and based for this idea. There is a D&D miniature called Flameskull from the set War Drums whick would be great if repainted.Press the link to have a look.

I finished molding my mock-up clay piece and and casting in semi-soft plastic which is somewhat flexible (like a hard gummy bear). After painting, here are what the nine symbiotes look like:

These are really fantastic! I'll be creating some models for these as well. Consider them printed and laminated!

Did you guys decide whether or not to base them? I'd love to know before I do mine. :D

GreyOwl

Well, Jack O' Blades voted for basing it and I think I like them as is. So officially, no it wasn't really decided. :)

My reason for not wanting to base them goes with what we've been discussing in the trials for the Sentinel Mark I and Michaelangelo - namely, how to distinguish between common figures. Since the Symbiote can attach to any figure, including a common, if they aren't based then they can be placed on the figure's base. If they were based, I'm not sure how to handle it. Or maybe the symbiotes should only be allowed to attach to Unique Heroes?

Well, usually a symbiote bonds with a nobody, Eddie Brock, Patrick Mulligan... just normal people. So I don't think Unique exclusive would work well.

Basing them would match with all other HS items

And, I don't think they should be able to attach to commons cause:

1. Some of the symbiotes would end up killing the common host with their abilities

2. They search for the most suitable AND strongest host they can find

3. It's just more epic/fun if they're attached to a Unique hero anyway :D

GreyOwl

Good points. I guess I need to update the cards to specify Unique Heroes only then?

Jack o' Blades

Also, the symbiotes might not fit on some figure's bases.

If you want to change the text, feel free, but otherwise we could wait until Black is TNT'ed...which will be a while haha.

True, the trials seem to be crawling along lately. I guess everyone is busy this time of year.
