So last night we played heroes vs. villains. I mind controlled Spider-man with Dr. Doom, forced Spidey to attack Captain America. Spidey rolled 0 skulls, and Cap rolled 3 shields. It was enough to kill Spidey b/c he already had two wounds. My question:

Could my opponent have chosen NOT to roll defense dice with Captain America or is it a requirement to always roll defense dice?

We played as if he didn't have a choice, but I'm not sure if that's correct...

I always play if they rolled 0 skulls the defender doesn't need to roll, Except with counterstrike.

Yup, that's how we do it. House ruled it in after my friend's annyoing brother tried to avoid losing his last figure to counterstrike damage.

From the official FAQ:

Can I roll less attack/defense dice if I want?
No, on page 14 of the 2nd edition rulebook; number 2 under "To carry out the attack" states you have to roll the number listed on your army card, plus any enhancements.

You must always roll all dice to which you are entitled. Probably a good candidate for addition to the Book of Doom.

So Cap has no choice to but beat on his mind controlled friends?

So Cap has no choice to but beat on his mind controlled friends? If they attack him, he has no choice. Not necessarily straight out of the comics, but definitely straight out of the rules.

Why not straight out of the comics? Can't you just see Cap under the mind control, Spidey attempts just to take him out of the fight and Old Winghead is like, "Can't...stop...myself..." And wammo, a shield across Webheads dome.

Captain America is my #1 target when I get someone with Mind Swap. Doesn't matter what I roll, I'm probably going to come out ahead.

I mindshackled Silver Surfer, sent him against Captain America, using Surfer's normal attack to give me a chance at damage or counterstrike ... and Surfer rolls 3 skulls and Cap rolls 3 shields. I was irked. :P

I took Hulk and drilled Batman to death in one punch, excellent roll.

Funny how often you attack a counterstriking figure with a normal attack and no one gets wounded, isn't it? It seems like skulls equal shields way more often than you would think.
