View Full Version : A simple Question... Where are the Dwarves/Pirates?

Ok, so we're getting more Samurai, more agents and so on. What I want to know is, When are we getting some freakin' dwarves? Does someone at Hasbro have something against our little bearded friends? Some pirates would also be pretty cool. Anyways just thought I would chime in since I haven't really posted on the new site yet!
P.S. Do the Heroscape guys sell anything at Gen-con or just set up a display?

They do not sell anything, but the Hasbro store will have some stuf.

Welcome, Jack's lament. I've got no additional answers to your questions, but do want you to feel welcome here.

Dwarves would be cool, but there are real stumpling blocks when it comes to their size and it's impact on movement in this game.

I wonder if dwarves, with a small size, would have a special movement ability that allowed them to climb higher than their own height? I do hate to have "exception" rules, though.

It is a catch 22. If they make exceptions for all small sized creatures, then there is no advantage to being a bit bigger.

Yeah....even a "scurry" movement of, oh, about 20 wouldn't solve the problem.
SCURRY:
Instead of their regular movement, small figures may scurry up to 20 spaces, but they may not attack after moving.

Maybe they should have a Dwarven Giant? :P
Seriously though I love the poster's sentiment. I have been crying for Pirates and Dwarves for some time now. It's good to see that lots of others feel the same way. :D

Uh? Am I missing something here? I have no idea what you could be talking about. So they can't climb as high as most characters, big deal? o.O

Not just for dwarves, but for any small unit. severely limiting access to areas of the map and slowing down movement tremendously. There are official maps that would have areas that would be unreachable by small units... Yes I see it as a stumbling block that probably explains why we have not seen anything small yet and when we do it will likely have an ability that mitigates this drawback.

With the forthcoming ladders a Dwarf could move anywhere.

sorry, GB. i'll have to take Kark's side here. Sure there will be parts unreachable by dwarves an other small units, but then you think "On the other hand" and realize that there will (or could be) parts only accessable to dwarves and small units.
The dwarves could have some kind of anger aura that prevents anyone from having a height advantage on them or something....Or an ability that would encourage them to avoid large/huge creatures.
Or maybe an added defense when being attack by units whose height is 10 or more levels higher than theirs.

I don't know of any official map where there are areas that would only be accessible to small units. The point made above, was that the need arises to create powers to compensate for these unit's shortcomings. You even suggested a couple. At height 3, you can only ascend levels of 2 or less. That is a severe limitation by any standards.

I think having a small card would be hard to make. I mean everyone would have a size advantage on smalls so you'd have to counter that. You'd have to counter the height thing as far as climbing goes. I want them to do this. It will be interesting to see what Hasbro does with this.

Maybe small flying figures? Like a squad of fairy?
BTW, I would have liked the see the Gorrilinators with a special ability allowing them to climb higher than their actual height. Hey! They are gorillas after all!

Size advantage, sure, but not height advantage. Height advantage is measured from the base.
I think most small units would need to have some sort of climb ability. If I ever get around to making spider bombs, they will have a climb ability that allows them to scale any height, as long as they can afford the move points to get there.
Small units that can't climb would be a problem, I think.

I don't see a problem. OK, they have the inbuilt disadvantage of not being able to get to some places. But they have an inbuilt avantage of not being very easy to target. And those places which are too tall to climb are also the very places that they can hide behind most completely.
I'd be very surpirsed if Hasbro stop at having just one small squad - given that the rules fmentioned "smalls" from day 1, they must have others up their sleeves.

this "no small unit" stuff reminds me of the "no unit will ever be over 210" arguments.

Where is the "no small unit" talk? I'm certain there will be small units. I also feel that there will probably be some mechanism to offset their game breaking disadvantage.

How so? Why couldn't they just have move 4 and height 4? Dwarves are really only half the size of a "normal" human, sometimes more...it's midgits that are teeny tiny. I went to college with dwarf that was about 4 feet tall, about 2/3 the height of an average man.

I think Dwarves should have the ability that allows them to be thrown by larger adjacent units and maybe even do damage like a kamikaze.

Dwarven mining
Dwarves begin the game with four mining counters on their card. Instead of normal movement, dwarves adjacent to any terrain greater than height 4 may move directly to the top of the terrain. After movement, place one mining counter at the base of the terrain, and one at the top, adjacent to any dwarf. These two hexes remain connected for the remainder of the game, and any figure may use its entire movement allotment to move between them in a single turn.

the small stature could also be enhanced by multiple numbers. Imagine having a squad of 5 of 6 small units on one card (this has been discussed before) but then to compensate for a height 3, give the dwarves muskets (maybe like some steamtech a la Arcanum scenario). I think I wouldn't give a flying monkeys ass (also a possible small unit that gets around the height issue- the monkeys that is, not their ass ... anyways) I won't care whether or not my 6 gun-toting dwarves couldn't get up the damn hill, especially not when I field 12 of em (2 army card at 110 each- and people ***** about 4th Mass line being abusive) + taelord (not overpriced now).
Range, flight, superior numbers are all perfect balances to small height. combinations of the above would make the drawback even less of an issue. Besides, using the romans without marcus (or if he perished in the battle) against syvarris would have a similar effect as the faster unit will always be out of range if played well. a small unit would have a similar fate but this game is introducing new mechanics to move figures that would be impossible otherwise- how else can I get Krug on a castle wall without using the summoning spear of Saylind? I don't think those ladders will hold a 2 based figure. I'm not worried at all about 3 height units. the game already has enough means to work around without even tapping into the creativity of new specialized powers.
