View Full Version : SoCal August Tournament#5 discussion and poll

Three Things-
One: Who is hosting in august? Please try to keep the fight over the honor civil people! I don't think it hurts to start planning this sooner.
Two: The poll.
My reasoning for the poll is that right now at $5 a person with 10 people that would provide enough for 1 large exp. and 2 small exp. and $10 to help towards food. Which is really only prizes for 3 out of 10 ( For every 2 more entrees there'd be enough for another small booster give or take). We've been really lucky so far in having generous hosts and attendees to provide the amount of prizes we've had each time. I wanted to know if people are fine with guaranteed prizes for the top 3 only with anything extra coming from donations by host or attendee. Or if they would rather have smaller prizes with more people taking something home vs same size prizes and a higher entry fee etc...
If there is an option you want, but don't see then let me know and i'll add it.
Lastly: Little sample to test the waters for the host to look at for dates.

I voted top three but though that 1 lrg and a small and 1/2 small and 1/2 small would be cool too giving the top 4 prizes. (never mind the fact in last tournament I came in 4th)
But top three would be cool. It also would work out that as we get into this grove there is the distinct possiblity that the Lrg expansions won't be needed. (well unless people want 6+ RttFF or TT)
As for dates either is fine but 12th is better.
Another idea that I propose though I don't think until we hit 6 tourneys would be to go quarterly. We would have a $15 dollar fee but every three months so it would be the same. That would assure everyone a prize but allow us some free game days easier. It might even create bigger tournaments. Just an idea. (now that it is said overwhelming)

Well I know that having it monthly means that if someone misses it then there is always next month. If we went quarterly then missing it would really suck for the people who have a hard time getting away on the weekends. Then again maybe having it quarterly would mean they're more likely to attend every one. It's a good point though and could easily happen down the line.
Same with eventually only needing sm boosters. I think it will be just like you said though, people wouldn't mind having several roads, ice, castles etc so I don't know if having the large prize will go out of style any time soon.
This is just an idea for a host to go by though. There's no reason that a host couldn't decide to be more creative maybe buy two sm boosters and spend the rest of the money on building dice towers etc I think things like that are awsome as well. Afterall anyone can go buy a small booster, but having a custom SoCal dice tower...priceless =P

Another point was brought up and it's a very good one. The entree fee really should cover all the costs of food first and foremost. After all my whole point was to make sure the host wasn't burdened and here I went sticking them with the food bill. Unfortunately I can't change the poll at this point so we're kinda stuck with it. You can continue to vote on the number of definate prizes though.
I'm pretty sure it's gonna land on 1-3. So basically a host should probably have prizes for at least the top three people. The size and type of prize would be entirely up to the host and would scale according to how much he/she spent on food, contributions, doing something small for everyone (stickers etc), etc... So the only guideline should be to have prizes for the top three at least then either upgrade their value or increase the number of prizes awarded depending on what's left from the pot.
Very common sense reasoning if you think about it, didn't really need to discuss it at all. A better discussion would be whether or not too raise the fee, but until we can see what a host does with solely leftover money from food costs I don't think there's a need to change it. Still at least it broached the subject so when we do have a tournament where only the top three take home prizes no one will feel gyped and the host won't feel bad.

I voted increase to $7. Not because of the prize structure, but because the host can uses a little food money help.
not alot of time to chat this week, but I'll chime in again.

Wow, when did our tournaments expand to a "Heroscape Christmas every month" deal? Now, I'm all for giving stuff away, but realistically, how often does a hoster want to be burdened with purchasing (and later getting reimbursed for, hopefully) prizes and food for the group? Shouldn't getting together and deciding a winner by playing be prize enough? Our first tournie, at Gencon, Oogie was kind enough to provide trophies to the first 6 winners, or so. Our second tournie, at Gem's, had a $5.00 entry fee established by the store which went to a gift card for the winner and the winner only. We all bought our own food at Taco Bell or Lil' Cesar's. Lastly, I'm getting to the point were extra boosters, large sets and master sets are just going to go on the pile with all my other figures for Heroscape. I'm sure some others don't need any more.
I'd be more inclined to buy a couple of trophies for the 1st and 2nd place finishers when I host a tournament at a gaming store. I'm still dieing that Oog got the beautiful dragon trophy at Gencon and has that to look at to remind him of his win.
Now, a large thanks to all who have stepped up and provided food, prizes and extras at their own expense. Kudos. With that said, let's get back to organizing tournaments for the thrill of winning without the worry of, "Are we going to have enough prizes?" and, "Gee, does everyone like turkey dogs?" Let's just play. Folks with wives, children, busy jobs and a myriad of other committments find it hard enough just making time to play, let alone organizing a Heroscape mixer.
Okay, rant over. Now, I'd be happy to "host" the next tournament, August 26th, at Gem's Games and Hobbies in La Mirada. The entry fee will be $5.00, which the owner charges but gives to the winner in the form of a gift card. Trophies will be awarded to the champ, the runner up and the player with the crapiest die rolls. There are several fast-food and not-so-fast-food joints within 1 mile. The start time will be noon. No one will be required to provide anything more than their entry fee, a map and armies they wish to use (heck, we probably won't even need the map).
LMK if this date is good for most and I'll make an official tournie thread when the majority have responded with a positive. If not, then the 12th it will be for whoever wishes to host it.
Regards

Also, Id like to make a note that, if the tourny was on the 26th, I could probably bring a friend. Its about a 60% chance, but he might be able to come. One of my friends is ok, so I want him to come, but If he cant come, one of my other good friends is going to be in utah, so that cancelles him out, wich leaves the beginners from where I live. I sure they'll be easy compition and stuff, but hey, the more the marrier right?

Just try and get a confirmation one way or the other feekonea. If possible it would be good to get a solid number before the tournament. Last time even on the day of the event we still weren't sure how many people we were going to have and that just makes the host's job harder.

Ok ill call him tomorrow to see if it could happen, Ive got a list of 5 (would be 6, but one of them is I think too much of a starter to come.) friends possible so one has to be open for somebody, plus thats right around when school starts so no one should be on vacation. Ill call and try to find someone tomorrow. He wasnt home today when I called.

well maybe we could make the tourny an hour earlier? Just to make sure that we get all of that stuff done. As long as that okay with everyone because I know that there are some people that live farther away than I do. It has to be a long shot, considering the store has already confirmed it, but it might work. We could also possibly start it maybe a half hour earlier and end it a half hour later or something along those lines.

I wanna say that the store opens at 12:00, but my memory is a little fried from a screwy day at work today. I'll get on it, 'Skulls, and post back here. Even if we start at 12:00 I don't think we'll have a problem wrapping it up by 5:00 if we keep it to the swiss tournament system.

I'll be in Maui from Aug 16th through the 23rd then I'm off to Vegas from the 26th thru the 29th so I won't be able to make this one. I'm such a jet setter.
If for some reason the Beat down falls apart I would probably be willing to do SIMI VALHALLA II on that saturday in Simi Valley. But only if the other falls apart.

I'm curious. If SoCal was aware of the spys, would there have been a CCC win? Would SoCal players have pulled out their "A" games instead of just having fun? Perhaps some of them were trying out new combinations? I guess we will never know, but it is an interesting question. NoCal needs to bring their trophy down to the beatdown!!!

I think you hit the nail on the head, Runehart.
I know when I played Voodoo, I used an experimental army never before tested in tournament, played extremely loosely, and still had a close game.
Still it was fun and it showed me that people from NoCal arn't ALL that bad.

Sky - Unfortunately I'll be unavailable most of August (Maui and Vegas!!!) Otherwise I would have found a way to come play wit ya. I still would be happy to open up my house for a game day next Saturday. I would love to make a huge 6 person or maybe an 8 person map. Or maybe a couple of 2vs2 like Simi Valhalla. We could start early enough to go swimming in the middle of the day also. I could also have a separate map for the younger kids if need be.
