More likely they just don't understand the Hersocape wave/expansion system. If the large heroes and terrain releases counted as "waves" then Zanafor's Discovery would have been 5 because of RttFF and Orm's. But it says right on the package that it is Collection 4

Well the add was made by hasbro you could tell by how profesionally made it was. I know about Wave 4 being called Collection 4.

June 29th, 2006, 12:35 PM
It could be right, Hasbro only officially in wave 4 started numbering the waves. I'd say they set the precedent now.

Not to say their numbering system would make much sense, although in a marketing sense it would.

I can make an incredibly professional ad. I do it all the time. Doesn't mean it is made by Hasbro. Where was it telling you to buy the product?

And to be honest, the marketing department at Hasbro could well have messed it up. Hand a picture to a designer without full info, they'll try and find out and sometimes get it wrong.

How is this. If Thora's Vengeance comes out with "Collection 6" on the packaging, I'll mail you one as an admittance that I am wrong.

But I'm not.

I agree, I can do something very prof., for example a band poster I did 3 weeks ago. It was bad ass except for the fact that my order said the band's name was 40 Below, when actually the bands name is 40 Below Summer. I had to contact 3 different people to prove to my sales person that this was the band's name.

Sure enough they come to pick up their posters and guess what, the band's name is 40 Below SUMMER, not just 40 below.

this is in a small company, in a large company like Hasbro things can get lost. If they have hired an ad agency then it could go through 6 different people before it ever hits the designers desk. If someone isn't paying attention then something will be wrong. Wave 4.5 can be lost in translation, this could also be a hype ad. Get people to notice a flaw, those people point out the mistake to everyone else, everyone begins debating it or people become interested in what it is and become frantic trying to find the WAVE 5.

Is Wave 5 out? Find out on the next "Hasbro Mistake"!!!!

I respect you and your past posts, but if you can't at least tell us the name of the magazine, where and when you saw it, or otherwise throw us some sort of bone towards finding this ad, I'm going to have to call "bull****" on the whole thing, which as we know ends all further argument and destroys all credibility of this line of discussion....of course. :-P

Slow but sure.

Why is it so hard for us to get info from you?

Why couldn't you have just posted the magazine name, issue number, volume, month, whatever all in the first post, to make it easy for us to find?

Something like this:

"TIME magazine from June 16th, 2003 (the one with Hillary Clinton on the cover) has a full page ad for Kia on page 33...check it out!"

The fact that you are making it so difficult is why folks are skeptical.

If you are telling the truth, you have nothing to lose....just post ALL the info about the magazine so we know exactly what issue to look at. That way if you can't scan and post a picture it won't matter...someone else will find a pic and post it, or at least confirm the info.

Not to sound negative, but who cares? Proof has already been established, anyone who is SO sure about it being false, wait until Thora's Vengance comes out. Don't make this dude do extra work because you think you know more. He was just trying to tell everyone what he found. I think it is cool, and until solid evidence can be produced against it, I will enjoy my set of wave 5 giant heroes and tundra.

I would hope you could enjoy your giant heroes and tundra no matter what it's called. But to answer your question, we're not rabidly obsessed with the numbering of waves. Oh sure, we're all Heroscape geeks here. No doubt. But we're merely interested in knowing where this info comes from , since Hasbro and its distributors have both said the Heroes and Tundra sets were not Wave 5. We're just curious because either A) Hasbro made a mistake in the ad, or B) the ad comes from a third party. Just mild curiosity is all. And you can't blame folks for being jumpy, since we've been fooled before.

I've zero reason to disbelieve the ad is real - I'm just concerned for my easily shaken sanity. Here's the picture I'm seeing:

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d45/toddrew/heroscapead.jpg

and I don't see where it says wave or collection 5. All I see is about 2/3 of Major Q-9 and the white block text "Major Q" and possibly some indescernible text in red to the left of that image. Is that what others see?

My son has a subscription to Boy's Life so I looked last night. There is an ad. Basically, it is the same ad that is on Hasbro's web site for the "Build the battle of all time" contest. (The ad that you see at the top of the page after you click on the link on the Heroscape home page.) In addition to the graphics showing the tundra to the left and the castle to the right, there are three individual images. One is of SGT. Drake Alexander and has in black lettering "Master Set". One is of the castle set and has in black lettering "Castle Expansion Set". The final one is the pic that Su-Bak-Na posted with "Wave-5 Expansion Set" next to it.

Basically, the ad is for the "Build the battle of all time" contest. The ad is real.

Look kid, we were not trying to give you a hard time, really. I'm actually on your side now, and think you may have found an interesting error or quirk or change of some sort. I just wanted to see the ad in context for myself. And to do that, I needed to know where you found it.

It takes about 30 seconds or less to give us that info. Just take the magazine, type the official magazine title, month/issue/voulme number or whatever into a post, and tell us the page number. Maybe let us know where someone can find this magazine...is it carried on news-stands? What's on the cover so we know what to look for? That sort of thing....just basic, easy to provide, helpful info. Next time you find something in a magazine that you want to tell folks about, give them that info so they know where to find it. Just like the kind of no-brainer info you'd use to cite a research source.

Okay. The magazine is Boy's Life, the July 2006 edition. ISBN is 0006-8608. As far as I am aware, it is NOT available on news stands. You get it by being an Explorer Scout, Boy Scout, Cub Scout, or a Scout Leader. A subscription is included with membership dues and is free to adult leaders (like myself). The ad is on page 47. The web site for the magazine is www.boyslife.org. The ads in the magazine do not appear to be on the web site.

Guess I should have spoken up earlier, but I was enjoying all the speculation on whether Wave 5 was one of the already-released products.

Here's the situation so far:

Wave 5--Moved to early August
Castle--Still scheduled for early August
Thaelenk replenishment stock--early August (Good deals available at HouseMouse for multiple sets allocated from this August replenishment)

The shipment scheduled for July 9 will arrive on schedule BUT the ship is NOT carrying Wave 5 as we believed. It is carrying previously-released Waves for some of the "big boys".

If I had to make a positive statement about everything arriving in August, it would be that you can save a lot by ordering and shipping the new products together. But personally, I would have preferred some 'breathing room" between these releases.

The shipment scheduled for July 9 will arrive on schedule BUT the ship is NOT carrying Wave 5 as we believed. It is carrying previously-released Waves for some of the "big boys".if there is even one single box of Orm's Return on that boat then i hope it sinks.

Has anyone emailed Sandra lately?

Thanks Sandra!

Do you know if any more Zanafor's Discovery will be on the ship?

So - HOW long has it been since new HS product was readily available at Walmart/Target?

Since Wave 4 came and went overnight, and hasn't been restocked on a large scale, that means it's been .... almost a YEAR since new HS product was available to anyone but a fanatic?

Man, it's too bad that speculating on how that fact impacts this game is not accepted well here. :headshake:

I will say that the stores I've seen in my area now have Wave 1 stuff. That's not a bad thing for new fans and potential new customers. If the wait has anything to do with Hasbro making sure older expansions were available again then I think that the wait is a good thing. Look at eBay prices for Wave 1 six months ago compared to now. It's a good thing.

Why don't stores sell all the waves at the same time? I remember as a kid going into Toys R Us and buying transformers or GI Joe or Star Wars or whatever and they'd have entire aisles dedicated to a particular game. In Walmart and Target Heroscape gets it's section for the Mater Set and whatever is the current wave they have stocked. Toys R Us is no better. Will I ever be able to walk into a toy section and see everything Heroscape has to offer all right next to each other?

As much as I hate to say it, i think that by releasing waves on a limited, staggered basis the way they do is probably sound marketing... It makes us JUMP when we see the set we've been looking for. How many of you, on a regular basis, make a quick "look see" in the HS section in Target/Walmart when you go there for other items?

This principle is soundly based on the tactic used by casinos to get people to keep plugging away the quarters. Let them "win" just enough to get them hooked on playing. Same with HS expansions... keep us looking, and probably buying more of the older stuff we already have, and provide us with "new" waves here and there to reinforce our "store lurking" behaviors.

Since we never quite know when that particular expanision set will become EXTREMELY hard to find again, we're more likely to grab it then and there than we would otherwise.

We're like those lousy rats that keep pressing the lever to get more food... behavior from infrequent reinforcement takes longer to extinguish than behavior formed from frequent reinforcement.

That being said, I WANT MORE WAVE 4 NOW!!! <pushing the lever> <pushing the lever> <pushing the lever>..... ;)

July 11th, 2006, 12:20 AM
Good sound marketing would be releasing the waves in a staggered way WHERE PEOPLE COULD FIND THEM!!!

It does no good for me to want the stuff and then never be able to get it ever (see Volcarren Wasteland, Road to the Forgotten Forest, Thalanek Tundra and Wave 4).

That's like saying "people in Belarus will love McDonald's. Maybe we should build a franchise out there someday".

And how often have you walked into a casino, only for them to tell you, "No we don't have slot machines today."? When you're ready to spend your money, the casino is ready with all the slot machines you might want. And if they don't, you wouldn't go back to that casino would you? You'd find a different one to spend your money at.

One of the biggest obstacles to having all of the expansions available at every store all the time is shelf space. Walmart and Target particularly hate to give a lot of shelf space to any one product for an unlimited time unless that product has a very long very successful track record.

Those were the days noodles, but alas those days are gone. Back then action figures were hot items, and therefore the shelves were filled with them. But now, kids just aren't buying that stuff as much. Especially board games.

Those, indeed, were the days.

I was talking to a young cousin of mine the other day about how action figures used to be sold "back in my day." He was upset because the character he wanted in some toyline was now really hard to find, and while offering to find it for him online I told him that back in the day they used to put out ALL the figures in the line ALL the time, for the life of the line. He was in awe, and I was vaguely depressed.

I realized what a great marketing method that was for the consumer...being able to walk into a store and get any figure you want. So sad that today's stores and manufacturers can't or won't do that.

I think that stores used to be able to order specific figures too...not just whatever the current wave is. At least it sure seemed that way. I can remember asking a store employee, like 20 years ago, if a particular MOTU figure was in the store. He said no, but ordered a few of them up for me and I bought one with my meager savings within the month.

I also remember that during the height of MOTU popularity, my parents would buy me everything that had been released for that year as a Birthday/Christmas present, giving me part for my Birthday and part for Christmas. Keep in mind that action figures were cheaper back then because they were produced in much larger amounts because they were THE popular item. But think about that....my parents were, in late summer/early fall, able to walk into ONE store and buy everything at the same time. If something wasn't on the shelf the store could, hold onto your britches, GET IT FOR YOU.

Of course, this was also before scalpers, who only further ruined the current pathetic toy distribution.

However, the Sandperson's desert counterpart, the Jawa, was featured quite prominently: No less than nine of the small brown figures were shown in the photos, usually in a rather humorous light, tumbling goofily or encroaching comically on the territory of the less mysterious-looking figures. But, to today’s collector, the Jawas are interesting for another reason. Namely, they are all of the rare vinyl-cape variety. As most collectors know, the vinyl- or plastic-cape Jawa was available only briefly at retail before being replaced by the much more common cloth-cape type. Since genuine examples of the earlier figure can sell for up to $300 on today's collectibles market, it can rightly be said that upwards of $2500 worth of Jawa figures were photographed by Woman's Day for this feature! (Of course, Woman's Day probably paid $3 each for them, but that's kind of what makes it so funny.)

and what did Woman's Day do with all this stuff once photographing was done? I bet some employees got to take it home to their kids or themselves?

Wow! I never saw that when I was a kid, thanks Taelord Focker!

We used to make all sorts of things from the movies that never got released or make our own stuff before it was released. I've forgotten most of it, but the one thing that never was released and should have been was a Cloud City set as big as the old Death Star set and complete w/the carbonite freezing chamber and the vent terrace where Luke is first told of his relationship to Darth Vader.

We must have made no less than 10 mockups of the carbonite freezing chamber, this was long before Kenner released the Slave One ship w/the flat and hollow bust of Han encased in carbonite. That version never did much for me and I was not a huge Boba Fett fan at the time. I think my little brother had it.

Our version usually consisted of a cardboard platform w/a large toothpaste box underneath and a rigged cardboard lever in the back. Poor Han was lowered into the toothpaste box and when he reached the bottom, the person using the cardboard lever, switched to a second cardboard lever on the otherside of the toothpast box and lifted it up. The first lever was not seen again, as it was now no longer touching anything on the rig-up. When Han appeared again by means of the second lever, he was encased in a clear Kenner Star Wars Figure blister (from one of the blister packs). The second lever was left at the top of the rigged platform, and Han was ready for transport.

I always liked our version of the carbonite frozen Han better than anything that Kenner put out. The above might sound complicated, but that's just me be overly descriptive so that the mechanic can be explained. Dang, that brings back memories. There was a guy in my neighborhood named John Paul Waylon. John Paul was the one who came up w/the initial design. The rest of us just kept improving on it and making it more elaborate.

Star Wars ruled! ...until Lucas lost his mind and kept making crappy movies...

Wow. the best I could do was burn things with matches. I took a Fischer-Price construstion guy and burned his head beyond recognition. Then made a paper helmet/mask that could slip off and on to reveal his ever so gruesome features. Poor construction guy.

Speaking of Adventure People. These guys were my first foray into action figures and they still saw plenty of play time even when Kenner released the Star Wars stuff.

Ski and Ninth, I must point out that the green construction also had some torture before I got to him with a match - my puppy had severely chewed on him. I too wondered why I would destroy a fantastic toy like an Adventure Person. Thanks for another memory!

A close second was the TV Action Team. I actually used the blue van and all the helicopter crew for my own version of Haunted Tank! It wasn't a tank so much as an enhanced van with missiles and such. In the comic, Jeb would ride poking out of the top of the tank turret. My 'Jeb' would sit in that cool revolving door and shout orders and shoot missiles.
I believe the Haunted Tank stories I was reading at the time had a black tank crew member. So the black helicopter pilot was perfect for this role!

I remember having a friend having bunch of those guys. We rigged one up with a throat soothing sprayer fixed to his back. If you put a lit match in his hand, you had instant flamethrower trooper. Many adventure people and a couple of Star Wars guys were incinerated that day.

The rest of the adventure people met their end at "The Mulcher". It was a rusted mulcher whose motor had long since burnt out. We removed the belts and operated the system by hand. Many adventure guys were executed for "crimes against humanity" of all things.

Little boys are quite aggressive and destructive. Is it just me or has society made little boys a lot more tame physically, and channeled it to other mediums (VG, TV, HS, CCG)?

I still have all my battle beasts. Not near a complete set, but a pretty good collection anyways. I never found the stupid horse-type guy that I "buried" an inch in the ground beneath a big pine tree, even though I tried to dig him up 5 minutes later.

I can assure you that some of my action figures died from being loved too much, but I never sent any through a mulcher. I loved those lil guys with all my heart and there was no way I would intentionally destroy them. I do remember kids that would do that kind of thing to their toys, but I always made sure that my toys and I avoided them.

Perhaps you got an extra shot of testosterone or something Ryougabot?

That phase lasted about 3 months. My friend and I realized that once we destroyed our toys, we could not get more. After that I took care of my toys and still have most of them to this day because of it. That brief flirtation with destruction may actually pay for my son's education.

I wonder what people will think of Heroscape in 2026. I wonder if anyone will remember that it was difficult to get these toys. I wonder of people will find their parent's collections in a basement. I wonder if the webpage will have updated ZD's bios.

BTW, Hasbro has been poor about distribution since at least 1984. Transformers did not just fall into stores at once. Some stores got them first, some were shot packed, some never even made it out to the shelves. We did not complain because we had no idea they were coming in the first place. The wish books were great, but the items in them had already been out for a year through the "traditional channels". Walmart could easily make a wish book by breaking all of the cartons in their warehouses and offering individual toys. The only problem with this that the popular toys would be sold, and the unpopular toys would have to be discounted very low to sell. If that happened, there would be many un-bought unique figures and commons would be very hard to come by because of the way they are packaged.

Nostalgia about the toys of the 80's never remembers the bad. Remember that in 2026.

No I didn't know there were vehicles and forts.
Mine were led by that cool white squid guy, and my brother's were led by the crappy shark with the pink armor and the cross-bow type weapon. I really liked the little penguin too, with the purple spear. I've got them all in the basement still.

I used to build a large Cloud City out of blocks. I remember one day my dad was playing with me, and he took Han and lowered him into a little pit he'd built, and then reached in and pulled out a brand new Kenner Han Solo in Carbonite figure for me. It blew my mind at the time.

did they make a helicopter pilot with an orange flight suit? one hand was like pointing with one finger. i seem to remember my older brother "torturing" a figure like that with the same method. what is it about boys burning their toys?

Yeah they did. It came with an orange helicopter. As kids, we got a lot of these Fisher Price People sets one year. You had the News set (as above), the Safari set complete with a jeep, pop-up trailer, and animals; a search and rescue set, a motocross set and others that have passed into obscurity. They were a lot of fun at the time! Those pictures sure bring back a lot of memories. I didn't torture mine, however......

-Ski

Ski and Ninth, I must point out that the green construction also had some torture before I got to him with a match - my puppy had severely chewed on him. I too wondered why I would destroy a fantastic toy like an Adventure Person. Thanks for another memory!

Here's the site I found them at:
http://www.thisoldtoy.com/L_FP_set/department-7/d-Adventure-Series.html

Ninth my favorite set was the Wilderness Patrol.

http://www.thisoldtoy.com/new-images/images-ok/300-399/FP307-EB90105980-B.JPG

A close second was the TV Action Team. I actually used the blue van and all the helicopter crew for my own version of Haunted Tank! It wasn't a tank so much as an enhanced van with missiles and such. In the comic, Jeb would ride poking out of the top of the tank turret. My 'Jeb' would sit in that cool revolving door and shout orders and shoot missiles.
I believe the Haunted Tank stories I was reading at the time had a black tank crew member. So the black helicopter pilot was perfect for this role!
http://www.thisoldtoy.com/new-images/images-ok/300-399/FP309X-1-EB93972782-B.JPG

Here was half of what I used for the van crew - the two guys on the left (and pilots from another set):
http://www.thisoldtoy.com/FPPeople/adventure-series.jpg

Wow....I had that plane and that green vehicle, but nothing lese from taht set. I think my mom bought them at a yard sale or they were a hand-me down from someone.

I also had that guy in the yellow helmet, orange checked shirt, on the right of the bottom pic. I found him on a playground one day, half buried in mud, and no one claimed it so I was allowed to keep it. I never knew what he went to.

I didn't have the old D&D action figs either, but my friend did. Warduke was cool. They really screwed up b/c they were released at the same time as the cartoon, but other than Warduke and Tiamat, none of the releases were in the cartoon. They could have made a mint w/better tie-ins to the show. We all loved it. I even bought the DVD collection from Great Britain in Region 2 and PAL. Luckily my DVD player plays those. I love the show all over again, and so do my wife and kids!

J.J. Arms. You could switch his hands to differents tools (weapons as well?)

Years later in college a friend jokingly made a reference to J.J. Arms and I was amazed anyone but me remembered the toy. For a while there I thought I had dreamt the whole thing.

They were pretty much about the size of HS figs except they were I think like half animal and half man. I remember an elephant guy. I am just wondering if anyone knows the name of these figs so I can see if they are what I remember them being. Might work for Hs if they are not to cartoony. BTW they were all futuristic. I too enjoy looking at Olivia Munn, but I thought the Sarah Lane (I think that was it?) that was there before her was a better host....what happened to her?

G4 has got a lot of cute girls hosting shows....my personal Morgan Webb fascination is well documented I'm sure, Olivia Munn is just nice to look at but seems a bit vacant, ditto for the new little pixie-ish Brit that does the Feed segments. Although that new blonde girl that does the Fresh Ink segments seems pretty cool...hopefully she'll get lots of air time when they cover comic-con. Jeez...can't believe I'm going to watch tv coverage of comic-con. DORK. :-P

Now they just need better shows. Attack of the Show is alright, and X-play can be enjoyable as they are usually pretty accurate with their reviews, and the channels coverage of E3 is always cool, but that's about all they've got going for them. I used to like that one show where folks would call in....it had some crazy girl with blond spiked hair and another girl with longer hair that was really cute...that show used to tie into Icons sometimes, back before Icons moved away from just videogame stuff and became lame. I think the channel should just truly focus on being a video-game and fanboy network. I'm sure there's enough folks out there that could support that.

The Shark, Giraffe, Rabbit and Deer were all my favorites and maybe the Pig, Skunk and Turtle, :)

I still have a few of these, they don't rub the element anymore though, :(

JCB, You're obviously correct, but I'll be petty and state that while you were correct, Ryougabot actually beat you to the punch on both the correction to me and the link:

Battle beasts was actually part of the Transformers universe in Japan. The Battle beasts were in a episode of Headmasters. See

Heh!

:explode:

Okay, pettiness ends, for now...

It's funny that about five pages back we had a discussion about Battle Beasts. Then skynight brings them back up, dubs ninthdoc a genius, and everyone moves on from there.

But, I'm still a genius...

Can I be Petty Cash?

Sure, now tell your twin brothers, Petty Rivalry and Petty Larceny to stop fighting and share.

BTW, Imax gets to Revdyer's Great Great Grandfather, Johnny Cash (no relation).
