Those look fantastic Raud! I've been experimenting with the green flower foam because of your other awesome ruins. I can't wait to try this. Is there another way to cut that pink foam if I don't have a hot wire? I've never worked with that stuff.
Great job!
You can cut it with a very sharp exacto blade or utility knife ...the hot wire cutter just cuts everything a bit smoother as it "melts" the cut edge just enough.

Onacara's right.
I would add that when using a blade, they dull fast. That is why I switched to the hot wire cutter.

you could easily sell those temple pieces and make some bucks
And they wouldn't weigh much to ship them
Hook up with Sandra from housemouse
I'd buy some
OK, I've been thinking about this since you posted. What would be a good asking price for a set of, say, two temples, four pillars and four trees?
And should I sell them via eBay, HouseMouse or directly through me?
Any thoughts?

Put a set up on eBay and see what it fetches...then you can price accordingly and either sell them flat rate or just keep selling them via auction.
PS...you might want to test mail a set or 2 to see how they travel because you will need to acoount for packing materials in your calculations.

Really nice ruins - I like them. I thought about building some myself some days ago but I wanted them not only as line of sight blockers. But if you want figures being able to step on the pyramids, they have to be much larger than yours and thatīs why I was stop thinking about it. ;)

I thought the same thing. In fact I even drew out and planned on how to make one and came to the same conlusion. You may remember this discussion thread. (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?p=501939#post501939)
I like these smaller ones, and if I can sell them, I'll like them even better!
It's probably better to just make a board out of standard hexes that looks like a pyramid. Like this:

 Those look great.
Wizards should really look into providing a set of columns and structures like that which fit into the hexes. It adds a lot to the appearance of the battlefield and provides good LOS blocking. Plus, it would complement their jungle trees quite nicely.

You may want to add a photo featuring the HS board in your auction and perhaps include Heroscape in the title to draw attention to your work.
It looks good on its own, but some buyers have no imagination. You have to lead the horse to the water at times. :deadhorse:

eBay auction is revised. I hope that helps to sell it!
Update: I sold the set for $12 with a $6 shipping fee. I'm not sure if that is fair price or not, but I'm happy. I hoped to see more action on the auction. I think I'll make some more and try again!

Temple Dice Tower
After 9 weeks of competing, I awarded the first place kid with this dice tower for my son's after school Heroscape club.
To construct the tower I used the template graciously provided by Infinity Max and shrunk it by 75%.
Here you can see the pieces of chip board I used for the brick texture.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/tower_dice-tower/1_tower_dice-tower.JPG
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/tower_dice-tower/2_tower_dice-tower.JPG
Here is the tower after I cut the battlements on the top and added the bricks.

After a base coat of black paint mixed with Mod Podge to seal the chip board.

And here is the tower after two coats of drybrushing. The first was a medium warm grey, and the second was a highlight of cream.

Dude, that is an awesome tower! What is chip board? And how do you manage to get it all cut up in nice, even little chunks? Very nice tower. So far my three home made dice towers are still in their raw form. They are ugly, but they work.
P.S. If you get really bored some day, I'm sure a full tutorial wouldn't be under appreciated. (hint, hint)

To make the bricks I just measured out the size I wanted and used a ruler and blade to cut the board. Chip board is a flat sheet of cardboard. It can be anywhere from 1/32" up to 1/4" thick. I have tons of thin sheets that came with photography supplies as backing to prevent prints and other things from bending. So in the first pic, you can see where I left the freshly cut bricks on the cutting board to the left. Remember, measure twice, cut once!
I cut all the bricks the same size to start. As I built the tower, if I needed a smaller brick, I just cut it with scissors. Then I just glued them on. Nothing really elaborate, just a little time consuming.

Very awesome tower. The only concern I would have, is that it appears you made the the bottom part where the dice are captured with similar bricks and therefore it is not flat. Potentially wouldn't the 20 sided die land in those ruts and have an invalid roll?

Some questions 'bout the Marro Bone Structure,
Could you tell me where you got the styro, what did you use to carve it, and did you spray-paint for any of the painting parts?
Also, Unrelated-ly do you happen to know where to find Foamcore? (I need it for a Warhammer 40k Project).

The styro came in the box with my TV. It wasn't the usual stryo though. It seems to be made out of plastic and is very durable. I don't usually see styro like that.
I didn't use any spray paint on that particular project. But since, I've been turned on to H2O spray paint and have been using that in addition to regular paint.
I simply carved the styro with a blade knife. I liked the angles it left.
For the foamcore, you should be able to find it at any hobby store, like Michael's. I'm a photographer so I always have a supply ;)

Im still quite new to heroscapers and still learning my way around the place, but i stumbled onto your creations and i was super amazed
All of your work is great! I have been admiring from afar and have just started to try building some of my own. :?
but i started with an adaptation of the orc tower. its very similar and the lader dosent really work but im happy with it and it does get a bit of game time
still trying to pick up on how to upload images that are just from my personal drive but when i find out then i hope to start posting all of my own customs.
again, great work on the buildings!

This is simply amazing. I'm dying to try and make one myself, but one thing is just beyond my grasp.
How do you resize a PDF file? I've searched every resource I can, downloaded a bunch of PDF editors that failed to live up to their claim, and still can't manage to crack that code. How can you print the Imax template at 75%?
Again, thanks for the inspiration - I can't wait to build one myself!

Platapus,
That foam came as packing material for my tv. I'm not sure what kind it is or where you can buy it. It was made out of plastic and is very sturdy. If you tried to snap it in half, it would bend and not break. It also looked like a sponge rather than small beads pressed together.

I've used Ebay for selling my stuff. Seems like Leifkicker has had success with that, too. Works well enough, but it is a bummer to pay all the fees. Seems like it would be cool to have a thread or forum here maybe. I'd rather sell to site members at a discount than give that extra $ to Ebay. Of course, Ebayers pay some ridiculous amounts for HS stuff...which could be good for you?

I want to add some small bushes and stuff around them, like the HS ones have. Do you think some small aquarium plants would do the trick?
Raud's actually do have some foliage on the bottom that are made from aquarium plants. (Well at least the ones he gave me do.)
Onacara, How do they look next to the original stuff? I don't have a jungle set yet.
Lord Pyre, small aquarium plants are great. Check for sales at big pet stores or Wal Mart.

They are totally different...but the handmade trees look incredible...I have seen yours and Grish's in person and they are amazing. I am going to have to finally make my own for the permanent maps I am going to make this spring/summer. It is going to make it alot easier for me to have a finished one to use as a reference point.
PS: I missed seeing the guard tower when I was there and am kicking myself now for it. :grumble:

Not to threadjack too much, but what do you have in store for permanent maps? I assume there will be a certain amount of custom work involved, that will be making the map permanent, and I'm very curious to what you were thinkin of.

New Stuff! - 1-8
Stone Fences:
This was the prototype that got me started. I originally wanted this to be made out of one piece. I decided to make them in two parts instead.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/stone-fences/1_stone-fence.jpg
Here you can see the individual pieces ready to be textured in my custom texture machine. The texturing came from some lava rocks from the landscaping.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/stone-fences/2_stone-fence.jpg
I cut each piece with my hot wire foam cutter to get nice uniform pieces. Then I carved them up with an exacto.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/stone-fences/3_stone-fence.jpg
Here are two pieces after being textured and before I glued them together.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/stone-fences/4_stone-fence.jpg
All the pieces are glued together and now they get an under coat of black.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/stone-fences/5_stone-fence.jpg
One set of fences. Two long and four short.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/stone-fences/6_stone-fence.jpg
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/stone-fences/7_stone-fence.jpg
In this shot you can see that the foam seems to have a texture. I've been using a textured spray paint that adds a nice slight roughness to the foam surface. After the black undercoat, I drybrushed with med grey and then highlighted with cream.

Hey Raud, question for ya. When you build something out of green foam, like your wall, do you use mod podge to cover it before you paint it?
Raudulfr Shieldcrusher
February 16th, 2009, 03:40 PM
Jake,
Yes. In fact, I water down the Mod Podge a bit so it soaks in. And I coat it several times.
JakeAndy
February 16th, 2009, 04:05 PM
Ok, well do you think it would turn out ok if i use one coat of mod podge?
If not how many coats? By the way its a cobblestone carving...
Raudulfr Shieldcrusher
February 16th, 2009, 04:09 PM
I guess the more you use, the stronger it will be. I'm not gentle with my stuff so strength is important to me. The one downside is the loss of the nice texture of the green foam. I've tried to get around that by using a textured spray paint.

Raudulfr Shieldcrusher
February 18th, 2009, 11:26 AM
Yep, Xacto and then sand them slightly to make them flat. Or if you have a small, detail cutting saw, that might work.
Where the small piece meets the larger piece in the middle, I'd try to follow the contour of the dowel by sanding the end with rolled up sand paper at about the same diameter as the dowel. You want as much material touching as you can for a good solid connection.
JakeAndy
February 18th, 2009, 11:52 AM
So your saying make it fit partailly around the larger dowel?
Raudulfr Shieldcrusher

Exactly. Make the end of the short piece follow the contour of the dowel.

The old wall was done with green florists foam. I cut the basic shape out with a simple box cutter-type knife. Then I built up the wall. When the shape was how I liked it, I started to carve out the shape of the bricks using the same knife. As I got down to details I switched to an X-acto knife. I added the crumbled pieces after the piece was carved to take up some of the empty hex spaces. The last step was to add the tiles which were made from sheet foam.
Florists foam is soft and needs to be strengthened to prevent damage. I did this using watered down Mod Podge letting it soak in real good. Several coats a necessary in my opinion. When I painted it I added sand to the base coat to give it some texture.

HOT LAVA DEATH!
It's been a while since I've had any new custom stuff to show. Grishnak posted a pic of his lava tiles in his custom thread but hasn't had the time to post a tutorial. I asked him if it was OK if I reverse engineered his tiles and made my own. I think I came pretty close! Anyway, here is a tutorial.
Step one:
I spray painted the tiles with a yellow spray paint.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/01_lava.jpg
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/02_lava.jpg
Step two:
I glued some crushed kitty litter to the tiles for the lava field tiles.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/03_lava.jpg
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/04_lava.jpg
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/05_lava.jpg
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/06_lava.jpg
Then I sprayed the kitty litter with some water to help with the absorption of the glue. Basically the water helps to draw the glue up into the litter.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/07_lava.jpg
A bunch of tiles:
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/08_lava.jpg
Close up:
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/09_lava.jpg
Step three:
I started the first color in a three part blend. The first is orange to transition from the yellow. I only painted it around the edges of the kitty litter. The next two colors also don't go all the way to the edges that way you can see the transition.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/15_lava.jpg
Next is red ochre. When I painted this I really had to mash the brush into the litter so it would cover all the little hard to reach areas.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/16_lava.jpg
And last is black. This color only got brushed onto the surface letting a little bit of red show through as if the lava was glowing underneath.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/17_lava.jpg
Step four:
Brush on some orange to the sides so when the tiles are stacked it isn't just plain yellow and looks more like flowing lava.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/18_lava.jpg
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/19_lava.jpg
Step five:
Now for the molten lava. After the initial coating of yellow I decided that a base of orange would have been better. Then I sponged on the yellow.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/10_lava.jpg
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/11_lava.jpg
And then sponged on some white. Just a little bit.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/12_lava.jpg
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/13_lava.jpg
The sponge:
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/14_lava.jpg
And here are some fun pics to show off the work!
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/20_lava.jpg
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/21_lava.jpg
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/22_lava.jpg
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/23_lava.jpg
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/lava/24_lava.jpg
After completing this project I think I would have done things differently. First, I would have glued the kitty litter down and then spray painted the base color of yellow. The rest would be the same. And on the molten lava I would have started with the base of orange instead of yellow.

Hello Raudulfr,
Really cool. What kind of Modge Podge do you use? Does it make the structure solid or does it still have some flexibility? Michaels has
a few different kinds available like a glossy or a matte kind. I have been using glue gel to seal my carved foam but I'm beginning to think it has too

I use the Matte finish Mod Podge. Although I don't think it makes a difference which type you use if you are going to paint it later. It does have some flexibility after it dries. Which is why I like it.

Dungeon Rock Outcrops
I started by carving out the bottom of rocks by laying a glyph on the foam and tracing around it with a blade. I then carved out a recessed area so they could sit on top of the hex tiles.

http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/rock-outcrops/02_rock-outcrops.jpg
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/rock-outcrops/03_rock-outcrops.jpg
I tried to carve the shapes of the rocks to match the outcrops in the new D&D master set, but there was just to much detail. I simplified the design to save myself some time carving. To start, I used a razor knife to carve the basic shape.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/rock-outcrops/04_rock-outcrops.jpg
Then I used a pencil to carve in the details.

http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/rock-outcrops/08_rock-outcrops.jpg
Painting was done in a standard method. I started with a solid black base of paint mixed with a little Mod Podge. The second coat was a green grey heavy dry-brush and I finished with a light tan dry-brush highlight.

Why, thank you!
#2 on the orc archer tower you forgot how to put the dang spikes on,
I sanded one edge to the correct angle and then glued them on. Simple really. I'm all about the simple!
#3 how in Sam hell do you make those awesome freakin rock outcroppings?
I made a tutorial. I know I didn't photograph the exact process, but again, it is simple. I carved the shape with a blade and then detailed with a pencil.
When I carved them out I cut the basic shape first and then cut at a downward angle and tilted the blade until the foam broke off. This created the ridges. Then I used a pencil to carve the lines going down from each ridge.
With so many tutorials online, I didn't feel it necessary to detail every step.

Mushrooms
As you can see, I've made several different sizes. In the lower right you can see two caps that are in various stages of shaping. The furthest to the right is one I just started carving and the one to left of it is a little more finished. When I'm done shaping them with a blade, I sand them smooth.

I'd like to keep some for myself so when I do get the D&D stuff I can use them. So, maybe 6-8 rocks and 4 shrooms for a master set? Something like that?

Not really, you seem to have some pretty good painting ideas already. I will say that the ones with the odd shaped splotches (center of the last photo, in the background) are my favorite ones. I was just wondering if you had some concept in mind when you painted them all. Like as they grow bigger the tops changed into specific paterns.

Dungeon Rock Outcrops
I started by carving out the bottom of rocks by laying a glyph on the foam and tracing around it with a blade. I then carved out a recessed area so they could sit on top of the hex tiles.

http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/rock-outcrops/02_rock-outcrops.jpg
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/rock-outcrops/03_rock-outcrops.jpg
I tried to carve the shapes of the rocks to match the outcrops in the new D&D master set, but there was just to much detail. I simplified the design to save myself some time carving. To start, I used a razor knife to carve the basic shape.
http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/rock-outcrops/04_rock-outcrops.jpg
Then I used a pencil to carve in the details.

http://www.rodriguezphotography.com/dwf/rock-outcrops/08_rock-outcrops.jpg
Painting was done in a standard method. I started with a solid black base of paint mixed with a little Mod Podge. The second coat was a green grey heavy dry-brush and I finished with a light tan dry-brush highlight.

I don't know if it would work on foam, but an idea to consider is if the foam can hold up to it have you thought of a silicon mold? It would save you alot of time in detail work, I just don't know if the foam would hold up or not. Regardless very nice stuff as always.

after reading this thread and seeing the awesome additions you have made ive started to make my own custom terrrain. i carved my 1st piece today, and have put on a coat of paint/mod podge mix. im using the green potting foam, and i know that all of your most recent things have been done in te insulation foam. is the insulation foam easier to mold? more durable? both?? im coming late to the game, and im not too sure what the difference is . Any tips or advice?
also, i love your lava tiles. me and the wife are going to run to my mothers house tomorrow to steal some cat litter :D

Hey Daddywarbux,
I find the green florists foam the easiest to work with, but it is fragile. Pink insulation foam is not as easy to carve fine details into, but it is more durable. Each have their place depending on what you want to create.
Thanks for the nice words!

Or, if you have any suggestions for such an undertaking? BTW, I cannot decide which of you customs I love the most, they are all phenomenal. I think the lava is taking the lead though...

Welcome cobravigon. Use the Search on the upper left of forums and put "Search Titles Only" and put Star Wars and see what you find. And remember to search more in the future.
The Star Wars A-Z of Custom Created Characters and Links (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=30698) and Heroes of StarWars 'Scape (HoSS) (http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=24975) are probably your best bet - HoSS is kinda like C3G or C3V for Star wars figures.
