Well I did take some reference from manga in my younger days, but I'm trying to find my own style, and to take a more liberal approach to proportions, expressions, and really everything like a lot of American cartoons. I have nothing against manga/anime but all mangakas kinda draw according to the same basic formula, whereas every American cartoon on TV has it's own visual flavor. I haven't the patience for animation, but I'd like to create a webcomic if nothing else. But first I need a compelling, original idea and the ability to write a story for more than a few pages...

I've been thinking about that, actually. Something funny and/or satirical, like VG Cats (that's www.vgcats.com if you're not familiar with it), but exclusively Scape. I imagine I'd just illustrate whatever witty observation came to mind for a weekly-or-so strip, but I don't even have one idea to get started!
A lot of good webcomics are collaborations between two or more artists, and I wonder if I will ever meet a writer on the same page as me who could provide the wit for me to illustrate.

Well, I was practicing with exaggerating some features to try and find my own style. Raelin strikes me as a very delicate-yet-tough and flowy kind of figure, so I experimented with the super-thin waist but she came out too long in the first drawing. I kinda like the front-on look in the smaller drawing to the right, though.

UPDATE: Hmmm... I think I have an idea! But it will take some time to ferment...

I understand the want to develop your own style. I, myself, developed mine from the various How to Draw -insert some childish cartoon name here- and from the manga I read. I tend to emphasize the head, having it be about the same size as the chest. I also like to make large feet, which is odd, since my shoes always look the worst in my pictures. I'm tempted to post some of my drawing, though they aren't HS. I never was very good at drawing other people's art.

Good luck with your comic strip. I hope it turns out well.

Aw snap, you just gave me a great idea... But I can't make it till I get my shipment! I've got Marcus and a pack of the IX Roman Legion coming in the mail, we ordered six boosters and a Road to the Forgotten Forest set from HasbroToyshop.com on Friday night and my dad says it would take at least a week to get here :( Not good since it's all I can think about... plus I'm going to a sleepover Thursday and I wanted to have those figures when I introduce my friends to the game. Any chance they'll show up after 6 days?

Hey all! Sorry I haven't updated since Day 1, but I'm working on it. I've spent all afternoon today trying to learn how to draw gorillas so I can draw a primadon or two. Unfortunately, large hands gripping laser guns is a challenge for me, and it would appear that primadons are a little bit bigfoot-like, in that they're covered in fur and don't have exposed pectoril and belly skin, like their faces. It shouldn't be hard to make that adjustment, I just need to be able to draw one in the way I'm hoping to for a particular project I'm working on.

Blackrock
July 29th, 2007, 03:11 PM
Hey-hey! I got some new stuff! I practiced drawing apes for a day so I could draw primadons. First up is the best result of those sketches, and with space leftover I filled in with an Aubrien archer and some elf faces. Then we've got some samurai and Omnicron doodles (you can tell the clunky, larger Omnicron was the first I drew; I think I worked those arms a lot better on the one at the top).

I picked up one of his books, the Fantasy Cartooning. It has a similar style that you have. Did you perhaps read any of his books too?

I like American style cartoons more than Japanese anime ones. It just seems to me that the anime style is WAY too overdone, plus it's not that hard to do. I like his style because it allows characters to display a wide variety of emotions.

July 31st, 2007, 12:28 AM
Thanks for the words of encouragement! I'm getting more confident and inspired to work on something original as I go along, but it's still got a long way to go. I know I'd like to create my own fantasy saga much like The Lord of the Rings, Warcraft, Final Fantasy, and of course Heroscape and the like.
At first I though about creating a fantasy world with a variety of furries as the primary inhabitants, but then I get picky about wild animals and other races so I figures I'll go with a generally original race of people and any others I can come up with. I don't have any good, recent concepts of what I've been working with, but I'll post some here if that wouldn't be against the rules. I'm thinking there'll be no humans, elves, or any of those "traditional" races... well, maybe orcs, ogres, trolls, and goblins
The race I have in mind is very human-like, same basic anatomy and whatnot, but they have these animal noses; I'm not sure if I can really compare them to any particular animal's nose, not really dog or cat like...just kind of an outward-pointing, broad, downward-pointing triangular brown nose. They've got long, tapering ears and skin the same color as humans, though I haven't tested darker complexions yet; I may have a whole 'nother race in the warmer lands. As for other intelligent races, the only thing I've really decided I want to develop is some subterrainian mole people with whom the kingdom that stars most of the saga was at war with at some point.
Anyway, for a good story you need conflict! And every world has war. Only problem is I can't come up with a good enough basis to create a world map or anything dividing any kind of enemy nations, or come up with something they're fighting for that hasn't been rehashed over and over. I suppose adventures taking place during a typical conquest such as the Romans' or the American Revolution could work. I don't know if I want to create and revolve the story around a rag-tag band of RPG-esque adventurers or lordly heroes of much fame such as Arthas and Thrall, leading the epic battles which make up the turmoil faced by the world.

Here's some new stuff! Again, just pages o' doodles but I am working on some more finished, colorful things... just you wait :o Here I have some zombies and Mario stuff, just 'cos I felt like it.
As for the second page, I saw this character in my head and had to draw her. I'd like to have an all-purpose character of a non-copywritten source, but I don't actually have any ideas for comic-type stories or anything... But i want to do more than pin-ups with this character >o< If only I knew a writer @_@ I still want to work on my fantasy world, I don't have any art of said plans though. I gotta work on drawing castles and royalty and guards in armor and stuff... and of course a story and all that.
So yeah, Nikki as I've decided to call her, isn't fanart but you guys showed an interest in my more original work so...here's my most recent attempts.

Wow I guess I'ven't posted here yet, but your sketches are amazing. I really like your style. As for finding a writer, I would suggest looking over the fanfictions and picking whoever you like best.

I have one gripe. The Japanese swords in your pictures are really thick, but I think that it's just because of the exaggerated style you use. And I only complain about it because I'm obsessed with swords. :D

Eh, they look really thick on the figures; I thought it was some kind of shorter-and-thicker style of blade :P Anyway I mostly drew that last Izumi, real quick like, to fill up space so I could justify scanning and posting that page, though I see my error with the Tagawa drawn with the Omnicron. He looks kinda misproportioned to me anyway. Samurai give me difficulties but I'll work on it :)

Your cartooning skills are solid!
Drake, Carr, Jotun, Zettians, Omnicrons, Krug - they look fantastic!
The Gorillinator with his fist on the ground is tops too.
The Nikki sketches are superb. She a real girl?
I dig sketches of heavyset people - they're not always easy to pull off and it takes a differnet curve of line to get them correct. You got it! Very nice.

I wish; she's just a character I made up. I feel dumb now 'cos I haven't drawn her any more since... I have a bad habit of coming up with decent ideas and proceeding to draw blanks when it comes to further ways to draw them. Thank you for your kind words, though!
I've recently started touching up the paintjobs on my HS figures. I tried taking before-and-after pics but the initial shots didn't come out very well so I'll just show them after; anyone familiar with the figures should know what's been changed, such as how I dirtied up my Major Q9 with some brown and black washes, or colored in Krug's hair, touched up his browns, and did a black wash over the whole of hm. I'm probably going to work on my Omnicron Snipers next, make them look a little more battleworn; maybe a light gray wash or something to accentuate shadows. They just look too pristine, though I love their structure and the white-and-blue color scheme compliments it well.

I would really like to get a specific request from someone :) I need a good motivation to draw something decent, and I'm hoping that if someone describes a scene or pose they'd like to see some of their favorite Heroscape characters in, I'll gladly take a crack at it! And, if all goes well, I may get CupidsArt to color it.

I also have a question to anyone who scans pictures into Adobe Photoshop: I use a Canon MP730 scanner/copier/printer. While I don't have Photoshop on my personal computer, the other computer in the den, to which the machine is linked, does. I use Photoshop's Import option to scan in my drawings, but the problem is that they scan in about 10 times larger than life-size! Like 2500 pixels wide or something.
I have a foggy memory of things scanning in much smaller in the old days, when we first got the machine, but I have no idea how it started scanning in so big or how to set it back. I've done all I can, but if anyone is familiar with the interface, please please pleeease respond to this post or message me or something! It's just so tedious having to estimate what to resize every drawing I scan in to, plus it goes so slowly. I recently discovered that scanning in black & white makes mere pencil markings perfectly black, just right for a lineart to be digitally colored! Frustratingly enough, if you resize a black & white picture the lines become hideous and pixelly; I don't even know how to switch a picture's format between color, grayscale, and b&w after scanning it...if that's possible.

One More Thing: I can't seem to find how to post a thumbnail-link of a picture on PhotoBucket, but I could do it on the ever flakey and inferior ImgHut (or whatever it's called). Can anyone tell me how?

I can't say for sure how to fix yr scannin' problem as I don' have that model, but ya *should* be able to access yr scanner options through My Computer> Control Panel> Printers & Faxes (assuming, of course, that yr running windows)

As fer convertin' to/ from greyscale; simplicity in itself. Once ya get yr scan into PhotoChop, on yr menu bar go to Image> Mode> (pick one)

Hope this helps a lil' bit.

As fer yr art itself.....WOW!!! Yr good :) If yr still takin' suggestions, I'd like to see some special attacks depicted; Mim's bad breath & Grimnak's chomp spring to mind immediately. I'm also tinkin' that as a "steppin' stone" (so to speak) to doin' a full story comic, ya might wanna try a few short 4 or 5 panel strips (like in the newspapers) as a kinda warmup exersize. Well....a warmup, & we won' hafta wait as long to see some finished product from ya :)

Request/suggestion: All out battle between assorted units of Utgar vs assorted units from the good guys. Blood, gore, limbs flying, heads pulled out. Wouldn't it be great to make your sketches gorey? But it's not gorey gorey, rather Happy Tree Friendish gorey.
