View Full Version : Planning Strategies: Advice Appreciated

UPDATE: We made the purchase, got six pretty boosters and that RttFF set for my bro. I suppose it's fair in the long run... Wouldn't want him to get the wrong idea, and we woulda spent that 20 bucks on some zombies and heavy gruts/shades at some point anyway :P Might not have gotten around to buying the Einar kyrie though...
Anyway, here's what I've got (and am going to soon have, after the delivery arrives) and I'm trying to find what kinda tricks I can work by tweaking and combining... I have a preference for Utgar, and I'm taking a good liking to Einar. The Master set's a given...
:jandar: Kelda, Sir Gilbert, Sir Denrick, Eldgrim, 4th Mass. Line, Dzu-Teh, Nilfheim
:ullar: Deadeye Dan, Aubrien Archers, Jotun, Theracus, Venoc Warlord
:vydar: James Murphy, Gladiatrons, Major Q9, Braxas
:einar: Empress Kiova, Einar Imperium, Kaemon Awa, Kozuke Sam, Tagawa Sam, Tagawa Archers, Ninjas, Guilty McCreech, Marcus, Roman Legionaires, Roman Archers
:utgar: Runa, Taelord, Ornak, Tornak, Arrow Gruts, Blade Gruts, Kee-Mo-Shi, Mi-Burq-Sa, Khosumet, Anubian Wolves, Zombies (2), Shades
Now, to begin with I'm sure I can make a good 400-500 point orc army, maybe with something extra thrown in to fill up any left over space. I definately like how the three champions and the two warrior squads bond so well. When we go on another buying spree I'll try to get vipers, Sacred Band, the other elves... but for now I shall work with what I've got. I've read that Jotun and Kelda go well together, or really any big hero you wanna keep alive for as long as you can surely goes well with Kelda. Taelord looks like such a waste though, 180 points and the same stats as Raelin merely with an attack aura instead of defense :?
I like not to mix good-with-bad if I can but if anyone could suggest a strategy to mix up a little of near-everything I've got available I'd love to hear it. I hope it wasn't un called for to convert my thread to one of a different sort; didn't wanna hog board space.

You need to get Road to the Forgotten Forest. Other than that, just buy what you like.

ARGH!! I should've specified, that's the last thing I need other than a duplicate of something I already have. I mean, I want one or two some day, the road tiles and trees are nice, but it's 20 dollars! I'm hoping it'll go on sale sometime. And I'm really more interested in figures now. I'm happy with my Master Set, though it's hard to make roads with just the Wall Walk tiles. Someday, though...
Also, if we ordered a RttFF set I'd have to give it to my older half-bro, and I'm trying to find a way to get out of that deal. He went shopping for all he could find in town the day we introduced him to Heroscape and he decided he loved the terrain (though he likes the game itself as well). He came back to our house later in the evening and gave me a zombies and shades & orcs pack to my surprise, but claimed they weren't a gift so much as he'd like us to order him a RttFF in exchange! He never got me an Xmas gift last year, so I figure it'd be nice if he'd just let us keep them as a gift... It's hard enough to convince my parents this is a good deal and I don't want to spend 20 bucks on something we're not gonna keep!
I understand that he's in his early 20s and has a nice income from this great computer programming job he's got but I think he can afford to be generous once in a while ._.

It's okay, I'm not mad at anyone... But I'm very frustrated! There are personal issues intertwined with the need to buy a whole lotta stuff right now to take advantage of the sale, which no one has told me when it might end, and I gotta tell my bro to just buy his own darn road & trees set 'cos it'll be forever and a day till we can afford to get one for him unless my parents really don't care but I want to save their money as much I can and just jump on this sale while we can.
I appreciate any advice given but I only want figure advice right now. A lot of people have made things like snipers and blastotrons sound really important but I'm not really interested in them; yet I don't want to buy something because I like it but it winds up being useless and I lose every game I play with another player of equal-or-higher skill and knowledge of the game.
Well anyway, I know I want Heroes of Barrenspur and Devourers & Minute Men... What might you suggest to go with that lot? I have my eye on some Jandar units but he's not my favorite general. Gaaah, I wish I didn't have to figure this all out so quickly ._.

If your mom likes elves, there is no way that you can lose by getting the 'Soulborgs and elves' pack. Deathreavers are awesome. I tried them out for the first time last night, and they are the best early glyph-grabbers/opponent-tier-uppers you can get, even if you just grab one squad of them. They're so small that they don't break up line of sight for any of your other units ;).
I definitely feel you on the whole 'if I get this, then...' phenomenon. Two things to remember about arrow gruts: 1. Mimring is a Beast. 2. Krug is a Beast. Let that simmer for a bit. If you're getting Krug, you better get at least one pack of Gruts, and two wouldn't hurt. Knights and Swog aren't bad either, because the Knights with their bonding make those lame viking heroes actually somewhat useful (or just use Denrick with them who you'll be getting anyway.)
You should definitely go for some Orcs. Blast/Glads is cool too, but it sounds like you like the orcs better. Gladiatrons come with more elves (and quite good ones at that.) Blastatrons are great, but they come with Deathstalkers, which leave something to be desired.
For the purposes of 400 point games with friends and family, I think you'll get by just fine with one of most commons.

Whew, sorry to cause you that much pain!
If you are doing just figures:
Orcs pack
Romans pack
Hero pack with Marcus in it
That should allow some very enjoyable themed army battles when used with the units you already have. Also, Roman Legos and Grut Archers are two of the best bonding squads available so far, with many many uses. You won't be sorry.
Happy gaming!

No problem mate  I'd like a variety, but I'll definately be getting the orcs. I have actually considered the Romans, and I'll be getting Marcus either way 'cos I need Heroes of Bleakwoode to get Tornak. Also, Kelda comes in there and it can't hurt to have her; a healer is quite a boon, especially when paired with Jotun! I just wish Taelord wasn't such a disgrace; does anyone use him?
Are you suggesting I get two of each? I don't think I could pull that off, but here's what I'm considering getting... And with the $10.00 off code, I MIGHT be able to squeeze in one more :O But I still want enough generositt points saved up to get the undead Wave 7 figures, two packs at hopefully $9.99 a piece at Wal-Mart (assuming they get them before September):
*Heroes of Bleakwoode (Kelda, Taelord, Tornak, Marcus, Venoc Lord)
*Heroes of Barrenspur (Krug, Me-Burq-Sa, Khosumet, Denrick)
*Devourers & Minute Men (handy Jandar shooters + squad to match Khosumet)
*Grut Orcs
*Knights & Swog Rider (swog for orcs, knights for more Jandar variety)
*Soulborgs & Elves (elves to please mother and gladiatrons can't hurt; don't know if I'll be getting blastotrons anytime soon though)
I may replace either Wolves & Minute Men or Knights & Swog for the IX Roman Legion if I can't squeak it in as a 7th. I'll have to decide...

After shiping and tax they still cost about what they will in the store...

Foot! If I add a seventh booster the shipping goes up a dollar. I'd be best just vouching for six... But what to replace?? I must get the Romans, I've taken a liking to them! And the men of the 4th Massachusetts Line are also soldiers so I could pair them with Marcus for a bonus if I wanted to. I could make a whole soldier army, using Sgt. Alexander and the Airborne Elite as well.
I think I'll knock out the Knights and the Swog Rider set. It can wait.

Actually, after the $10.00 discount with the code, 6 boosters is $44.48. I don't know about tax, but it can't be much more.
Curses! Even with 6 it's $6.54 shipping... Still, I'd like to save my parents some grief. I should still limit myself to 6 packs.

I think that, first and foremost, you need to get an RTFF pack and give it to your brother because you already made a commitment with him and to me making a special effort to always honor your commitments is one of the most important things you can do in life. It is far more important than Heroscape is. 20 years from now you probably won't have Heroscape anymore, but you will always want your brother to be there for you. That is worth more than any amount of material goods in life.

I suppose you're right. It just seems a little odd to go and hand something to a family member like it's a present and then expect something of equal or greater value in return. It wouldn't be such an issue if these cheap boosters weren't a temporary thing. I'll try talking to him about it, at least let him know about the sale if he wants to order some figures for himself.

Road is the toughest price wise. I got mine at Walmart for 15 and haven't seen one yet. I would look for castles on sale when Marvelscape hits the shelves!
