View Full Version : Undead in Valhalla

I keep seeing people wanting undead units and Zombies and the like to be future heroscape figures. This makes little sense if you know a bit about Norse mythology and what Valhalla represents......

Valhalla, Hall of the Slain, in Norse mythology is the hall presided over by Odin. This vast hall has five hundred and forty doors. The rafters are spears, the hall is roofed with shields and breast-plates litter the benches. A wolf guards the western door and an eagle hovers over it. It is here that the Valkyries, Odin's messengers and spirits of war, bring half of the heroes that died on the battle fields (the rest go to Freya's hall Folkvang). These heroes, the Einherjar, are prepared in Valhalla for the oncoming battle of Ragnarok. When the battle commences, eight hundred warriors will march shoulder to shoulder out of each door.

So, the heroes in heroscape are dead heroes of different times and places brought together for Ultimate Battle as the game designers wanted. This explains why you have Romans fighting robots. How can there be undead in Valhalla when everyone is already dead?

Use your imagination! :D

Here's one (and not very original idea): how about the undead are cowardly soldiers cursed to torment and misery due to their lack of allegiance in their real life. They must regain their honor, and a more noble afterlife existence, through loyal battles fought for their general.

Marros are as close to undead as I think we'll get.

Sudema is undead. Maybe she is an exception?

Oi, not this again. Already been through this with Reaper. u_u Valhalla in Heroscape is not a LITERAL afterlife, just a metaphorical one. Yes, this is different from the original mythology. Deal with it. We already have one official undead unit in the case of Sudema, so that's that.

most of the heros are not"undead" they came to Valhalla before they die.
the differens from the orginal are very big.

sudema is a verry strage undead she looks like a mummy, and got "stare stone" if it is here eyes, medusa head, or one artefact. only the story make her un dead . and that lotr story about Khosumet the Darklord and Marhana, a mighty female Elf Banisher and mosbane.

so it seems thre is a middelerath realm in hs. but undead? ist seems agic that she lives. uta undead common ary could be cool warrios that cannont die but then the player had use two of (one) roundmarker to relive them.
and heal could destroy them.

Undead can still "die". Vampires can be killed (stakes, sunlight, etc), liches can be killed, zombies can be killed (often with fire or cutting off head), etc. Undead have been destroyed/killed commonly in movies, myths, etc

but for game like hs undead sould have some ud (undeath) features.
if dw9000 vs a lich is the same as dw9000 vs a normal soldier.

and undead can not mark as undead with more defense.

Could it not be possible that Valhalla is a planet that was just named after the Norse, Valhalla? Doesn't mean that it is THE Valhalla, just a planets' name inspired by it!

could be but that wellsprings( and the collection of other world heros)
it remebers me on some old star trek episods.
kirk vs gorn, other the gladiator planet wehere.

but so seems that Valhalla had to technologie(some middeage thing)
and the poor mission fight foe wellsprings and kill all the others then is the power my. ist verry strange we know we got this power firt a figure is on it.

and that is not like a roleplaying game . the the +2 on defense is going with you after you win a battel.

i wish there comes some undead more a grave yard expansion.

They could do a Lazarus figure that comes back into the game three moves after he dies.

(this is NOT a serious suggestion, and I'm not even going to mention the possibility of a Moses or Jesus figure)

Ya, since there's already Undead official units, I'd say this one's a non-issue now, as un-true to the Valhalla legends as it may be....

Also, in the cartoons/ads, they show heroes getting whisked away BEFORE they die (kinda similar to some time-travel stories/movies, like John Varley's Millenium actually)

Also in the animated movie doesn't Drake ask Jandar if he (Drake) is dead and Jandar says no?

Jesus figure That would be awesome

That graveyard expansion idea sounds Awesome. Imagine having a cool gravyard in the middle of the board (tombtones, decaying trees, etc) out of which Zombies could spawn or something.

Someone made a dashboard Jesus fig back on HS.net, actually. It was pretty funny. Got me half in mind to try and make a ton of serious Biblical figs to lure in some of my Christian pals with... only I never got around certain thematic/logic issues with the special power implementations....
There's also been at least one graveyard project as recently as HSHQ. Can't remember who helmed it, though.

I have a trio of undead and spirits coming out soon, I hope, that introduce a mechanic using these themes......

I've been playtesting a new Orc Shaman (who rides a fast warbird) called "Lazzorak." (Not too hard to figure the genesis of that name.) He can take life markers himself in order to raise fallen comrades. I've also liked the idea of a flying Phoenix that could raise itself.

I could go for a Yeshua Messhia figure. Raise the dead. Heal. No water hindrance. He'd have no defense dice when attacked by the Romans.

I've been thinking of a Phoenix Custom too. Maybe 120 points or so, a 7 flyer, with 6? 5? attack and 3 defense and when it dies rises back to life if a 11-20 is rolled

LoL! Interesting how the thread has gone from the Undead to Christian-inspired HS and the Pheonix bird!

Anyway ditto what Reaper and Kark said: there's already an undead figure in HS so that is that. How similar those undead will be to popular mythology is yet to be seen.

Some such as the head-vulnerable zombie will not be too hard - just make the head the target zone. Others such as vampires and their vulnerability to sun and garlic might be a bit harder to capture.

Ditto ditto....'nuff said, basically.

Valhalla in HS is not the same as Valhalla in myth, the fighters there are not dead, and we already have an undead figure.

I think it is just the war world that they are gathered on, not really linked to any other solid time or place.

actually in the official site episode things Jandar tells Alexander that he is NOT dead. the designers must have used valhalla as a creative planet name not relating it at all to the mythological place.

i think so too, before the german granade kicks adrake in the but hevanish, his question "im dead" comes from this fraking place.

and here is the big different from the north saga, a valikury thate the soul of a fallen warrior on earth but first then he died. in heroscape it can be aliens who steal ppl with tractor-rays.

andthe could die in vallhala, thre was no word abut can we go back when we wen(if yes than the were back when tey dissapired) like, the knigh story.. but if not the had no future on their home planet. in the game valkurie profile is the destiny a big pointe.

and if sedema can come back then could be sure a wellsprig thre you cane relive dead fighter, or even turn them back as undead, even cures places like "pet cementry" dig your fallen warrior and the came back as undead.
